We may not know what it's like to be a bat, but we're pretty confident that it's like something—that bats (and other mammals) are sentient creatures. They feel pleasure and pain, cold and warmth, agitation and comfort. But when it comes to other creatures, the case is less clear. Is a crab sentient? What about a termite, or a tree? The honest answer is we just don't know—and yet, despite that uncertainty, practical questions arise. How should we treat these beings? What do we owe them? My guest today is Dr. Jonathan Birch. Jonathan is a Professor of Philosophy at the London School of Economics and the author of the new book The Edge of Sentience: Risk and Precaution in Humans, Other Animals, and AI. In it, he presents a framework for thinking about which beings might be sentient and about how our policies should account for this. Here, we talk about Jonathan's work at the nexus of philosophy, science, and policy—in particular, his role in advising the UK government on the welfare of cephalopods and decapods. We discuss what it means to be sentient and what the brain basis of sentience might be. We sketch his precautionary framework for dealing with the wide-ranging debates and rampant uncertainty around these issues. We talk about several prominent edge cases in the natural world. And, finally, we consider whether AI might become sentient and, if so, by what route. Along the way, Jonathan and I touch on: plants, crayfish, bees, larvae, and LLMs. We talk about "sentience candidates" and the "zone of reasonable disagreement"; about Jonathan's stances on octopus farming and live-boiling of crabs; about the “run-ahead principle” and the “gaming problem”; and about the question of whether all conscious experience has a valence. Jonathan's book is a remarkably clear and compelling read—if you find yourself intrigued by our conversation, I definitely recommend that you check out The Edge of Sentience as well. Alright friends, without further ado, on to our sixth season of Many Minds and on to my conversation with Dr. Jonathan Birch. Enjoy! A transcript of this episode will be available soon. Without the kindness of sentient beings, we cannot achieve realizations or practice the Dharma. Lama Zopa Rinpoche emphasizes the significance of respecting and valuing sentient beings, just as one respects and values the Buddha. One accumulates immeasurable merit by cultivating bodhicitta and offering charity with deep respect.True poverty lies in the lack of understanding of Dharma and realization, and inner poverty, characterized by a lack of satisfaction and contentment, is even more detrimental. Helping sentient beings, regardless of their external circumstances, offers the most valuable assistance. Buddhas and bodhisattvas cherish sentient beings above all else, regardless of their negative qualities or actions. Therefore, even small acts of kindness, such as offering praise or making someone happy, become offerings to the enlightened beings.Rinpoche describes the signs of death, including distant signs like recurring dreams related to death, and near signs indicating that death is approaching. There are specific practices to counteract these signs, such as taking long-life initiations, doing long-life retreats, and saving the lives of animals. It is important to create positive causes for enlightenment, accepting death peacefully and preparing the mind for a favourable rebirth. We should not wait until the time of death to practice renunciation and letting go. Instead, we should practice daily to overcome attachment. By training the mind to let go and develop renunciation, one becomes well-prepared to face death and its challenges. Bodhichitta and the altruistic mind of enlightenment enable us to experience death for the benefit of all sentient beings. With bodhicitta, one can transform the experience of death into a cause for others' happiness and one's enlightenment. By describing a beautiful and enjoyable place like a pure land, it becomes easier for the dying person to let go of attachments to the present world and transition peacefully. The name of the pure land becomes an important object of refuge, and by generating a strong wish to be born in that pure land, it can direct the person's consciousness toward that destination. Some people may relate the idea of heaven to the deva realm, and by mentioning a specific name and describing the enjoyment it offers, a strong wish can direct the consciousness there. This teaching was given at Institut Vajra Yogini, France as part of a Four Kadampa Deities Retreat from April 18 to May 11, 2003. Nicky is the Founder and CEO of the UK based charity International Aid for the Protection and Welfare of Animals and one of its exciting fundraising initiatives Adventures for Animals. Nicky's inspiration to set up the charity came from her background as a Veterinary Nurse. She first established the UK charity in 2009 to be able to provide a better future for animals in need.  Since then, she and her team have done incredible work rescuing tens of thousands of cats and dogs across two continents. What began as a desire to help one stray dog in the rainforests of Borneo, has since expanded to helping over 30,000 dogs and cats who have needed veterinary support. Currently she is focusing on three core projects in Borneo, Penang Island and Romania, with a range of additional support programs worldwide. Nicky shares a glimpse of her life and lifelong passion of helping animals worldwide, along with her adventures around the world, from climbing the highest peaks and reaching Everest Base Camp, to travelling through the jungles of Borneo, to the forthcoming trip to Kilimanjaro and preparing for the vastness of the Sahara, all in the name of fundraising for her charity. **Please note special time for this call.As Parag Agarwal started moving up in his 35-year global career with Fortune 500 corporations, he began to notice a lot of suffering around him.  “I used to sit in a car with my son next to me playing with a toy while there were kids outside who were begging. Pretty early on, I decided I wanted to do something for the vulnerable.”  His heart’s journey started with helping educate underprivileged children. But when his niece sent him videos showing how animals are abused in our society, “it opened a door of awareness for me which cannot be closed.” He decided to dedicate “the second innings of his life” to reducing the suffering faced by animals in India. In 2022, while also serving in his current role as CFO of Dr. Reddys, a multi-billion dollar Indian multinational pharma company, he co-founded India Animal Fund with the blessings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. India Animal Fund is a backbone organization for ecosystem development of the animal protection movement in India. It works to reduce animal exploitation – including their use for consumption, as objects of research and testing, and other forms of labor – and to enable them to live a life of dignity without fear, hunger, or confinement.  “No one gets up thinking I am going to exploit and be cruel to an animal today,” he reflects. “But somehow it has become part of the system… The suffering of animals is intense.”   In a relatively short period of time, IAF has been able to mobilize various stakeholders and has positively impacted the lives of thousands of animals.     Parag has co-founded several other social impact organizations in this area, including Ahimsa Trust (an organization to catalyze more investment and leadership talent in the field of animal welfare), Plant-based Foods Industry Association (an industry body of plant-based alternatives start-ups), and Physicians’ Association for Nutrition (a body of doctors that educates medical professionals about nutrition).  Another pivotal turning point in his life came more recently, when he sat a 10-day Vipassana meditation retreat followed by extensive reading of Buddha's original teachings about the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. “This has been the start of my real inner transformation. I feel as if I have just taken a few steps on a very long and beautiful path.”  Parag is a Chartered Accountant and a Company Secretary and has previously been associated with organizations such as Reckitt, Unilever, GSK Consumer Healthcare & Genpact. He is also the founder of TAP India Foundation with the vision of an India where no child is out of school. Parag’s family has taken a pledge to share 50% of their net worth with society, and are signatories to Living My Promise.  Join us for a conversation with this passionate vegan and a voice for the vulnerable.  The conversation will be moderated by former Awakin Calls guests Ariel Nessel and Rev. Bonnie Rose. Ari is currently focused on advancing the alternative proteins sector to address animal cruelty. Bonnie is a minister with Ventura's Center for Spiritual Living and has recently authored a book titled Dances with Dogs.

Working for a company focused solely on money, even making a billion dollars a day, is nothing compared to the merit we create by helping people practice Dharma and by fulfilling the wishes of our guru, Lama Zopa Rinpoche says. Rinpoche recalls the story of Lama Atisha checking on the realizations of three disciples. He found that the ones who served as his cook and translator had more realizations than the one who focused on study and meditation. Working hard for sentient beings or offering service to the guru is the same as completing many hundred thousand prostrations, mandala offerings, or other preliminaries. Serving and pleasing the guru creates far more merit than making countless offerings and saving the lives of millions of creatures. All of our wishes succeed if we correctly accomplish our guru's instructions.

Welcome to Episode #70 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! I hope that this conversation lit a spark in you, about how yoga can help all sentient beings. If you're looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about yoga as an act of service then this is the conversation for you. Support the podcast: https://www.patreon.com/wildyogatribe Tell me more about Yangchen Lhamo Yangchen Lhamo is a yoga teacher and yoga studio owner in Bhutan. She teaches Hatha yoga, meditation, and Ashtanga Vinyasa. She completed her 200-hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh in January 2020, and opened Yoga Yangchen in Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan, in September 2020. In 2022, she completed her 300-hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh. Yoga Yangchen's main social cause is Doghouse Bhutan, which she founded with her Bhutan-based Swiss friend Nadine. It is a community-based project. Doghouse Bhutan builds doghouses for the free-roaming dogs of Bhutan using scrap materials to protect them from the rain, cold, and snow. Yangchen's passion in life is creating and improving the well-being of all sentient beings— animals and people alike. She loves learning and exploring new things and meeting new people. She believes that changing the world for the better requires you to start with yourself. After all, ‘practice what you preach' is core to being able to inspire others. What to expect in the Yoga In Bhutan episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast I was astounded that Yangchen opened her yoga studio in the same year as getting her yoga certification, as well as in the middle of the pandemic! So many yoga studios closed during the pandemic, yet Yanchen knew it was time for her to open her own. She wanted to give back to her community. Yoga has given Yangchen so many beautiful gifts, like the ability to be more reflective instead of reactive. Yet, she sure has given so many gifts back to her community! Yangchen also shared with us her thoughts on yoga. Yoga is not just what you practice. Yoga is the way you walk, talk, and the actions you take. Everything, all the small things, is yoga. For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Bhutan episode? Yoga in Bhutan has a long history, but hasn't been practiced by everyday people until very recently Yoga as a way to balance our everyday life and our emotions Opening a yoga studio the same year as getting certified Advice for teachers who want to open their own studio Yoga has helped her become more reflective instead of reactive Connect with Yangchen Lhamo www.yogayangchen.com https://www.instagram.com/yogayangchenbhutan/ https://www.facebook.com/yogayangchen https://www.instagram.com/doghousebhutan/ https://www.facebook.com/doghousebhutan Want more? The Compassion Initiative: Just Two Guys in Brisbane talking Compassion. www.thecompassioninitiative.com.au

Here, I interview Jamie Woodhouse from Sentientism.info and the Sentientism Podcast. From his website: "Sentientism is a philosophy or worldview – a way of thinking about what's real and what matters. Sentientists use evidence and reason to work out what to believe in, so don't hold supernatural beliefs. Sentientists also have compassion for every sentient being – any being capable of experiencing, particularly experiencing suffering or flourishing. Roughly speaking, that's human and non-human animals, but other types of being could conceivably be sentient too." My big takeaway from this conversation with Jamie: Compassion's bottom line: To not needlessly cause suffering. All sentient beings can suffer, & so, at a minimum, compassion requires that we include them in our moral scope & not cause them to suffer. Let me know what you think! Lama Zopa Rinpoche continues his video teachings on thought transformation. Here is a summary of a teaching given on June 26 from Kopan Monastery, Nepal, at the request of Telo Tulku Rinpoche, Ganden Tendar Ling FPMT Buddhist Center, Aryadeva FPMT Study Group, and the Save Tibet Foundation in Russia.  The first kindness of sentient beings is that they are the source of all past, present, and future happiness including enlightenment, Lama Zopa Rinpoche reminds us. They are from whom we receive Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha and in whom we take refuge. A buddha comes from a bodhisattva. A bodhisattva comes from bodhichitta, and bodhichitta comes from great compassion. Great compassion comes from all those sentient beings whose minds are obscured and suffering including every hell being, every hungry ghost, every animal, every human being, every sura, and every asura being. Before you practice thought transformation, you have to understand that sentient beings are so precious and we must stop harming others. If we remember the kindness of sentient beings, naturally we will respect them and the mind will be less depressed. Rinpoche discusses “the second kindness,” the kindness of sentient being when they were our human mother (55:30), offering commentary on several points related to this. The “third kindness” is that our shelter, food, and clothing came from the kindness of sentient beings (1:13:47). Sentient beings are like a guru, Rinpoche explains. They are wish-granting jewels more precious than gold, diamonds, or sapphires. Cherishing even one sentient being brings us to enlightenment. In fact, the happiness of all sentient beings is in our hands.

Rinpoche offered this teaching to students from China and Malaysia via Zoom on June 12, 2022 from Kopan Monastery, Nepal. By taking refuge in the Dharma, we should stop harming sentient beings, Rinpoche reminds us. And more than that, we should benefit them. In fact, the real refuge practice is cherishing sentient beings. If we take care of them the most, if we cherish them the most, that is the best offering to all the Buddhas, Dharma, and Sangha. To show respect for everyone is the best practice. Sentient beings are so precious because the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha came from them. Even those who we call enemy, who get angry with us, who harm us with their body, speech, and mind. These people are unbelievably precious because Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha come from them as well. The more we realize the kindness of sentient beings, the more we will dedicate our life to them. Throughout this teaching, Rinpoche also continues to discuss what to abandon and what to practice after having taken refuge in the Sangha.
