In the spring of 1999, songwriter/recording artist Arlan Feiles received a call from Stephen Trask. Trask shared that he was the composer of a show running at the Jane St. Theater in NYC called Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and he was looking for a multi instrumentalist/vocalist for the show's first touring run in Boston. As soon as Arlan heard Trask's magnificent songs, he was on board. 25 years later, Arlan will be reprising his role as Skshp for a 3 week run at the Bell Works Theater in NJ with musician/performer Remember Jones as Hedwig, AND he joins us to unpack the show's pure rock and roll heart that is the Original Cast Recording. Remember Jones is a label-defying music artist who embraces risk. It did take some time to foster the confidence he needed to become a recording artist and performer. Remember shares his journey from cabaret performer to three albums and leading a band in this podcast. Growing up in an environment surrounded by music lovers, Remember started performing at 12 years old. He was naturally drawn to a musical career, with a deep appreciation for Motown, and 50s and 60s-era music. He kept performing, learning the music business by being out there and taking risks, first as a 16-year cabaret performer in NYC and later as a frontman for 20-piece bands. Remember shares the challenges of music as a business, from being responsible for other people's livelihoods to building a loyal fan base to staying authentic to yourself and your vision. We discuss how every show is like launching a start-up business. Learn about some of the show concepts he's created and his riskiest move. Hear about the light bulb moment that transformed his life and led him to lose 200 lbs in a year. That life change helped prove to himself that he could do anything, which set him on today's path. He realized we carve out our path in music and in life. His career has been sustained by holding on to what he loves, which is the energy between the audience and performers.
There are rumors that Chris has a crush on Daniel, and Chris reads Daniel the most ridiculous diet challenge he's ever seen. Then, Remember Jones joins and talks about sustaining his happiness as well as his weight loss, and gives all the dirt on his song Fat Jeans that was allegedly imitated by a very successful recording artist!Have a question you want answered on the podcast? Andrea D'Oria has been an outpatient dietitian for almost 20 years, counseling thousands of patients and clients. She has focused her practice largely on bariatric patients over the last 5 years, but we certainly did not constrict our conversation to that topic. (get it?) We spoke about trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle while stuck under quarantine. We also laughed.Andrea is absolutely the coolest nutritionist I have had the pleasure to speak with, and there has been no shortage. Check out her practice here, Check out her Facebook Group here. When Stephanie Wittels Wachs wrote a memoir about the years before and after her brother Harris's death, she couldn't have possibly known the profound effect she would have on me. When I listened to the audiobook, I couldn't have possibly known she would agree to sit down and speak with me about the book, her brother, her new podcast (Last Day), and all manner of other topics ranging from taking naps in cars to why Stranger Things will never jump the shark. Stephanie is a mother of two, a talented writer and speaker, and a genuinely delightful human. I loved every minute of our conversation. Harris Wittels was a comic and writer on The Sarah Silverman Program, Parks and Recreation, and Master of None. He died of a heroin overdose in 2015, after several stays in 30 day rehab facilities. Stephanie has made it her mission to keep his legacy alive, and the work she is doing to dig deeply into the opioid crisis through her show Last Day is eye opening, devastating, and necessary.
