I don't know about you, but I don't really struggle to do health-related things like exercising and eating vegetables. But I've founding sleeping well on a regular basis to be a bit of a challenge. Shift work as a sports broadcaster - 2am get-ups in the same week as 2am bedtimes - hasn't helped. But fundamentally sleeping is the anti-do: relaxation isn't something you can force through with discipline or the ability to form behavioural habits. And the more you think or worry about sleep - or document it with technology - the harder it can seem to actually relax enough to nod off. We now live in a world where we're being bombarded with information about how important sleep is to our short-term daily performance and chances of long-term good health. This can be anxiety-inducing and counterproductive to sleep! In this context, I found restorative sleep coach Holly Hannigan-Mills' approach to helping people get good kip very refreshing and very useful. Holly has been helping people sleep for nearly 10 years. Taking away that jeopardy and sense of doom seems to be key and adopting a general acceptance that we won't always get a good night's sleep - but we'll be all right - is a cathartic attitude shift. The conversation also includes some very practical tips about how to create a restful feeling in the evening - including getting daylight in the morning. Plus we do talk about how to navigate sleep patterns when you're doing variable shift patterns.I met Holly when undertaking the Second Prime health assessment at GHS Clinics - https://ghsclinics.health/services/sleep-programme/ - and she also has her own private practice: https://hmcoaching.ukFollow Holly on Instagram for more advice: https://www.instagram.com/_hm.coaching**************************************Chief Sponsor: Bang & Olufsen Cheltenham: https://stores.bang-olufsen.com/en/united-kingdom/cheltenham/unit-15-the-courtyard-montpellier-streetInfo on Sponsor Offerings: For 15% off Herring Shoes enter the code SPORTANDLIFE at checkout at -https://www.herringshoes.co.ukFor 30% off Cytoplan supplements for your first purchase at https://www.cytoplan.co.uk and a 10% discount ongoing: Check out the intro to the podcast.

This is an encore presentation of a previous episode, originally airing in 2016. --- Currently a writer on CBS' Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Brian Stack started on NBC's Late Night with Conan O'Brien in 1997, winning an Emmy for writing on the show ten years later and appearing as the caped and mustachioed Interrupter, hapless door-to-door salesman Hannigan and the ghost of old-time radio crooner Artie Kendall, among a slew of other characters. He followed Conan to both his truncated tenure at The Tonight Show and his current TBS program, but moved with his family back to New York and joined the Colbert staff in September of 2015. Having also made appearances on 30Rock, The Office, New Girl and Parks & Recreation, Brian talks today about his love for The Replacements, what vinyl box set he recently bought despite no longer owning a turntable, and yes... what it's like to open for Slipknot. Sleep expert Tracy Hannigan explains why understanding sleep is so crucial to our overall well-being and how we might be complicating our relationship with rest. She brings her expertise as a qualified sleep therapist to dispel common myths while offering practical insights for anyone struggling with insomnia.• Sleep is the only major health pillar we cannot directly control, unlike nutrition, movement, and social contact• The "8-hour sleep" recommendation is merely a guideline—your personal sleep need is genetically determined and varies throughout life• Sleep trackers provide interesting data but are often inaccurate and can create unnecessary anxiety about sleep metrics• Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) should be the first intervention for insomnia, not medication• Normal sleep includes brief awakenings throughout the night—most of us just don't remember them• Screen time before bed may not be as harmful as commonly believed—phones and tablets aren't bright enough to significantly impact sleep• Creating "perfect" sleep conditions can backfire by reinforcing anxiety about sleep• Being present in the moment, especially in your body, naturally reduces sleep-disrupting anxietyIf you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe and leave a review to help others find this valuable information. A couple of weeks ago Dave Hannigan joined me to share the fascinating story of how a Kerry man called Butty Sugrue managed to convince the one and only Muhammad Ali to come to Ireland and fight Alvin Lewis in Croke Park. It's a fantastic yarn and if you didn't hear it, I'd strongly recommend doing so.But Dave has lived in the US for over 25 years and so I couldn't let him go without getting his thoughts on what its like to be an Irish man living in Long Island, which is true Trump territory, and all that comes with it. Dave and I go deep on politics, media, the 'flooding of the zone', and even the fall of the Roman empire! The Mario Rosenstock Podcast is produced by Patrick Haughey, AudioBrand

If you have a dog with fear, anxiety, or aggression issues, you've likely wondered—or, more likely, worried—whether your own personality traits are to blame for their unwanted behaviors.Understandably so. For years, dog owners have been fed messages like, “it's all how you raise them” and “there are no bad dogs, only bad owners.” Even experienced dog behavior professionals, who fully acknowledge the huge influence of biology and individual traits on dog behavior outcomes, are quick to affirm that stressy, anxious owners are far more likely to have anxious dogs.Listen to Co-Hosts Sarah Fraser and Brian Burton (both are Co-Founders of INSTINCT with a Master's in Animal Behavior) discuss this topic, including how the existing research and their experience with thousands of dogs and owners have shaped their thoughts and approach on whether anxious owners cause anxious dogs. Bobby Warrener (comedian) joins the show to tell us about a real-life block courtesy of living with fellow comedian Will Hannigan. It turns out drinking, drugs, and comedians living together is a bad combination, as Bobby learns the hard way when he gets kicked out of his house after being very stupid one night. The story isn't all bad though, as it is a stepping stone to Bobby's (and Will's) eventual sobriety and they are back to being great friends. And we make great friends with Bobby on this episode as well, as we chat about teacher fashion, the newest in WHL names, Mr. Hands, underground rappers, and Stefan cannot resist showing Joey to Bobby. Plus, Bobby has gamed his algorithm to only show him nice things, Stefan brings a crazy Jordan Peterson quote to the show, and John finds a woman online who makes people pay her to come up with deranged baby names for them. If you want your algorithm to also have some nice things, you can head on over to patreon.com/blockedparty, where $5/month gets you access to THREE bonus episodes every single month. Last week, Brandon Ash Mohammed joined us in-studio for a fantastic mailbag episode, and with Stefan having a license in hand, John is now going to have to actually teach him what to do behind the wheel. Plus! We just launched some brand-new merch thanks to our friend Graydon Speace, and he made four absolutely killer designs for us you won't wanna miss. Every Patreon sub comes with a merch discount, so don't miss out! Hit up merch.blockedparty.com for all the stuff. Bobby Warrener is a comedian whose debut album is set to come out later this spring.
