In the spring of 1999, songwriter/recording artist Arlan Feiles received a call from Stephen Trask. Trask shared that he was the composer of a show running at the Jane St. Theater in NYC called Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and he was looking for a multi instrumentalist/vocalist for the show's first touring run in Boston. As soon as Arlan heard Trask's magnificent songs, he was on board. 25 years later, Arlan will be reprising his role as Skshp for a 3 week run at the Bell Works Theater in NJ with musician/performer Remember Jones as Hedwig, AND he joins us to unpack the show's pure rock and roll heart that is the Original Cast Recording. Songs discussed in this episode: Intro/Tear Me Down - Hedwig and the Angry Inch/Pace Theatrical Group at The 57 Theater, Boston 1999; It's So Easy - Arlan Feiles; Haha, Bitch! - Remember Jones; Tear Me Down - Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Original Cast Recording); Oh! It's Miriam Shor, y'all! You Might Know Her From Younger, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Magic Hour, GCB, Shortbus, Swingtown, Maestro, American Fiction, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. Miriam gave us all the scoop on grounding the zaniness of Diana Trout on Darren Star's Younger, leading the indie comedy Magic Hour, and appearing in "brilliant but canceled" series like GCB and Swingtown. All that, plus Miriam talked to us about being one of John Cameron Mitchell's "players," appearing in Shortbus and, of course, originating the role of Yitzhak in the Hedwig universe; popping up in prestige Oscar films; her musical theatre roots; New York City history; and dying by way of a paintbrush in The Americans. Send us a textHEDWIGBefore we say auf wiedersehen to Season 14 with its eight revamps of the previously covered during the show's first five years, the boys of TGTPTU reveal their unexpected special little packages: 1x1's, wherein each host shall choose a single film by its merits of discussion and unlikelihood to be exposed on a future 4x4, creator, or thematic season. The first of these darlings is Thomas's: HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH (2001). Adapted from the rock musical of the same name that started as the collaboration between frontman of the NYC-based band Cheater (performing on stage as Hedwig's band) Stephen Trask and then actor later turned actor-director with this debut film John Cameron Mitchell. Hedwig's story, on stage told in song and monologue, of male-to-female surgery so as to marry an American GI and leave East Berlin originated from Mitchell's own experiences as a military brat in Germany and Kansas trailer parks while the jealousy and newer betrayal Hedwig expresses toward her protégé and superstar success/successor Tommy Gnosis (also played by Mitchell in the play but embodied by Early Aughts indie film darling and pod-contentious actor Michael Pitt) is elevated by Trask's music and lyrics and is expanded and enriched with animation, locations, and added characters (most notably Andrea Martin as the band's manager) for the silver screen.   Learn more about the progression from stage to screen from Thomas on research; jam out to Rock Facts with Ryan (sorry, mineralogists, but we're talking glam and punk rock here); former host Jack on vibes in the rhythm section wakes up mid-episode to like the film and dig the hand-drawn animation; and Ken lands his rimshot, getting to tell his joke that calls back to TGTPTU's Nolan coverage (Season 12).  Spoiler: You'll be hearing from four Hed heads.  Reminder: You don't put a bra in a dryer!  CONTENT WARNING: At least once during the episode the “f” word (“Ferengi”) is used. For those allergic to Star Trek and nerdom, our sincerest apologies. Bowtie Productions was founded in 2019 with the goal of creating collaborative theatrical experiences for early-career artists in the GTA. Led by like-minded arts performers and creators from the Toronto theatre community, Bowtie strives to illuminate impactful stories and produce intimate, rarely produced pieces of fan-favourite theatre.  Bowtie hopes to continue providing opportunities for artistic expression, community building and professional growth within the Toronto arts community. HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH (2024) Hedwig and the Angry Inch tells the tale of how a “slip of a girlyboy” from communist East Berlin, Hanschel, becomes the “internationally ignored song stylist” known as Hedwig after a botched sex change operation. The show daringly breaks the fourth wall, as Hedwig directly tells the audience of her past tribulations and heartbreak in the form of an extended monologue paired with rock songs. With a little help from her band and her back-up singer Yitzhak, Hedwig examines her quest for her other half, for love, and ultimately for her identity.  Theatre Passe Muraille Mainspace  September 1-7, 2024 CAST JESSIE JAMES as HEDWIG LUCA MCPHEE as YITZHAK CREW DIRECTED by MEREDITH SHEDDEN MUSIC DIRECTED by ETHAN ROTENBERG PRODUCED by IAN KOWALSKI SET AND PROP DESIGN by QUÝNH DIEP LIGHTING DESIGN by NIALL DURCAN COSTUME DESIGN by IRENE LY SOUND DESIGN by PARKER MERLIHAN WIG DESIGN by BRANDON DARCEL WIG SUPERVISION by HANNAH DULONG PROJECTION DESIGN by ALEX GROZDANIS TECHNICAL DIRECTION by MATT HALLWORTH STAGE MANAGED by TALFRYN QUIRING ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGED by JENNA BROWN Logo Design by Valentina Caballero Graphic Design by Macy Nguyen

Today we say goodbye to our annual MOVIES ARE GAY theme for June and it's one of our favorite months. So eye opening. Sometimes hole opening. We're coasting out strong with our last selection and it just so happens to be (I think) our first official musical and it's one that took us by surprise waaaaay back in 2001 when we happened to lay eyes on it in our movie theaters and dorm rooms. It was intensely appreciated in its time by a small audience but John Cameron Mitchell & Stephen Trask's undeniably entertaining rock musical has proven influential and enduring. Of course we're discussing the 2001 queer cult classic “HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH” directed by John Cameron Mitchell and starring himself, Miriam Shor, Andrea Martin and Michael Pitt with music by Stephen Trask. A young boy growing up in East Berlin finds her way to America following a botched gender reassignment surgery. Hansel, now carrying her mother's name, is alone in an isolating new world. She reinvents herself through music and falls in love. Of course it doesn't work out so we come into the story of Hedwig through bitterness, salad bars and solid rock and roll jams. Will Hedwig find the fame that was stolen from her? Will she become what she was always meant to be? One way or another we all do. Shit, dawg, that's deep ((hits blunt)). We got that Criterion up at the house but here's a version we found online in Spanish: https://archive.org/details/Hedwig.And.The.Angry.InchAngeeParaZoowoman.website_201804 Don't gat mad at us if it's a dead link. From the horror cabaret and glam rock of his past to his current dark synth pop sound, Austin performer Caleb De Casper always brings a stunning in-your-face theatricality to his music and live shows. The classically trained pianist and vocalist stalks the stage in evening gowns, bondage wear, Victorian collars and the ever-present fishnets and heels, confidently declaring that masculinity comes in many different forms. The performance art aspect of this “Rocky Horror-esque piano dramatist and vocal contortionist” (Austin Chronicle) is the bleeding heart of De Casper's music, which has been performed all over the US, since being invited out to the Live Music Capital by ATX punk band XETAS, who were mesmerized by his work when they were billed together in his hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina.  In Austin, De Casper found the space to flourish as a queer artist that he never found in North Carolina and immediately set to work proving wrong the former NC piano teacher who once told him, "As a gay songwriter, the world will never accept your voice or point of view". That voice and point of view was warmly received with 2019's De Casper, which brought a glam rock feel (think Hedwig And The Angry Inch meets The Dresden Dolls with guitars) and the single “Good Boy” was named one of OVRLD's top 25 songs of the year, was a featured Studio 1A performance at KUTX and was a favorite Tiny Desk performance of 2018.  Wanting to explore new territory on his forthcoming debut LP Femme Boy, the album is an eclectic journey, often dark and brooding but contrasted by high energy and that aforementioned theatricality. Standout track “Too Many Boys” is an explosive and passionate narrative of what it is to be a gay man in 2021, complete with searing guitars. Whereas the delicate and graceful “Dreamer” is a poppy heartstring-tugger and features vocals from Sabrina Ellis (A Giant Dog, Sweet Spirit, Heart Bones). The album's roots lie not just on the dance floor, but also the theatre stage as well as with the glam and decay of old Hollywood. Femme Boy comes out this fall and the stunning and provocative “Too Many Boys” video is out now. Website | Spotify | Youtube | InstagramRadio Edits | Photo Folder | Album Artwork | Lyrics & Production Info

We also get reviews and recaps of this week's episode of Katy Keene and Vagrant Queen. It's also musical week on Riverdale, where the gang performs songs from Hedwig and the Angry Inch, one of Mike's favorite musicals. The Taste Buds thought this was the best musical episode of Riverdale yet. Plus, since Mike is the only one who knew anything about the musical before this episode, so Mike leads Ryan and Cassie into an epic game of Hedwig trivia! That's not it! Every show based on a comic book has hundreds of bearded characters. And now, only one group of people has what it takes to figure out who has the very best beard! Michael Falzon is the real deal. He is charm personified and comes with an engaging sense of humour and an infinite industry wisdom born of extensive time as a performer and producer, in the business we call show.Upon any meeting with Falzon I best describe him as possessed of a gentle bonhomie. He is humble and modest but at the same time can be direct, frank and insightful. His early career saw him singing professionally in Brisbane with Vocal Point, an 8-part group specialising in close harmony. So too began his extensive travel nationally and internationally.Early work on the stage provided him with an opportunity to explore classical musical theatre styles and operetta in a succession of shows that included The Pirates of Penzance (with Jon English), HMS Pinafore, Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (with David Dixon) and Hello, Dolly! (with Jill Perryman). These experiences would lay valuable foundations that would see him develop terrific versatility as a stage performer, and vocal skill that would extend to rock and popular repertoire. In 2003 he was rewarded with his break-through role in We Will Rock You. Selected by creators Ben Elton and Queen’s Roger Taylor and Brian May, his performance as ‘Galileo Figaro' earned great acclaim. After a tour nationally, Falzon played the show in Japan and throughout the United Kingdom. We Will Rock You offered him a chance to play huge stadiums in arena performances. This was an experience also provided by his performance as 'the Artilleryman’ in Jeff Wayne’s musical version of The War of The Worlds.Falzon’s extensive on stage work has included Hedwig and The Angry Inch, Ordinary Days, Floyd Collins, Jesus Christ Superstar, Rock of Ages, Chess and an opportunity to craft the role of ‘Leo Szilard’ in the Australian/USA co-production of Atomic, and early work on the developing rock opera Get Jack.I know you’ll enjoy this conversation as much as I enjoyed recording this conversation, with the bouyant Michael Falzon.

Kevin picks John Cameron Mitchell's 2001 adaptation of his own play, HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH. We all struggle tripping over pronouns because of our wokeness. You guys, we are so excited to welcome choreographer Spencer Liff to the podcast this week. Like a lot of people, I first became aware of Spencer for his Emmy nominated work as a choreographer on the hit show 'So You Think You Can Dance--' I had no idea that he’s totally a Broadway guy! Spencer made his Broadway debut at age 11 in the musical 'Big'. He went on to appear in 'The Wedding Singer,' 'Cry Baby,' 'Equis,' and' 9 to 5', taking on more and more responsibility along the way. He was the Associate Choreographer and Dance captain for 'Cry Baby' and was the Dance Captain on 'Equis'. After hitting it big on so You Think You Can Dance, he came back to Broadway to provide the musical staging for the Neil Patrick Harris led 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch', and was then hired to choreograph the Deaf West Production of 'Spring Awakening', which ultimately transferred to Broadway earlier this season. He was recently tapped by James Lapine himself to choreograph the upcoming revival of the much loved musical 'Falsettos'. It was such a delight to spend a Sunday morning chatting with this guy.

Getting out there, trying new things, keeping an open mind, knowing yourself, and being comfortable with the skin you live in (or the skin that's been foisted upon you.) Some heavy themes from a couple of cult classic films are being discussed in the Nighthawks Cafe. First up is the 1975 THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, a rock musical that takes a couple of unsuspecting virgins into the clutches of an alien transvestite mad scientist, the final destination? A world of absolute pleasure. Then a story of duality, questioning of the self, personal identity, and more Rock and Roll. John Cameron Mitchell is the title character of HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, another rock musical, the film follows a person struggling to find sexual and gender identity in a world of love, loss, fame, greed, sex, and some pretty slick one-liners. Hedwig and her band travel the country telling Hedwig's challenging story of change, self, and broken hearts.
