The boys are back and this time they are digging into the strange world of Ron Ormond's religious films. They will be taking a look at If Footmen Tire You What Will Horses Do?, The Burning Hell, and The Believers Heaven.
This lurid and captivating film about a family besieged by demons after attempting to contact their deceased loved one via an occultist could only have been produced from the singular vision of the Ormonds. To us at Boys' Bible Study, writer/director Ron Ormond, his wife June and their son Tim are the “first family” of Christian movies. Some of the Ormonds' most famous films, such as IF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU, WHAT WILL HORSES DO? (1971) and THE BURNING HELL (1974) are still considered Christian genre classics decades later, known for their gripping exploitation-style treatment of Christian messaging that likely emerged from the family's shared background in vaudeville performance. This same showbiz charisma could also explain why the Ormonds' films were financially successful, widely distributed through church tours that were sometimes accompanied by a live presentation by Tim Ormond saving the souls in the audience who had just been moved by a shocking film experience. THE GRIM REAPER is plenty shocking; the Ormonds are skilled at DIY costuming and special effects to depict the supernatural horror of the world of demons, making Satan come to life for viewers to effectively demonstrate why tampering in the occult could doom their souls forever. Celebrity guest preachers Jerry Falwell (!) and Jack Van Impe (!!) also stop by the Ormonds' set to deliver sermons addressed directly to the camera, hammering down the central theme of THE GRIM REAPER: hell, Satan, and his demons are very real. If you don't believe in demons, you may as well not be a Christian. THIS WEEK: If Footmen Tire You What Will Horses Do? (1971), The Burning Hell (1974), The Believer's Heaven (1977)Throughout the 1950s and 60s, Ron Ormond and his family made a name for themselves peddling trashy drive-in flicks across the country. After a near-fatal plane crash, the Ormonds gave up their wicked ways and dedicated their lives to God. So how does an exploitation filmmaker convert from sinner to saint? Well, in the case of Ron Ormond, that meant partnering with the Reverend Estus Pirkle and creating a trio of fire, brimstone, and child decapitation movies the likes of which the world had never seen or will see produced again. If you thought last week's episode was off the rails wait till you hear this week's! Today Dom and Alex take a look at the 1971 fundamentalist Christian propaganda-goresploitation shlock movie If Footmen Tire You, What Will Horses Do? Discussing it's idiosyncratic director Ron Ormond, how the concerns of the far right then are still present in their circles today, and generally just lose our minds at all the mental things that happen in this film. This is definitely not an episode to miss!
This one has been a long time coming! We have been wanting to cover the work of Ron Ormond since we first stepped into the cave, many years ago! He has been slowly gaining more recognition recently and a box set of his films has been released. Starting out on stage, he moved into films and had a successful run making exploitation movies primarily for drive-in audiences. After an accident in a small plane which he survived, he became a devout christian and redirected his efforts toward religious and anti-communist propaganda. This guy really does have the goods and the two films we look at on this episode REALLY prove it! We start off with "White Lightnin' Road" from 1967. Filled with moonshiners and stock car racers, this one really hits the sweet spot. There is romance, action, deceit and murder in this one and it's all wonderfully over-the-top yet still extremely captivating. There is some sort of bizarre magic going on that makes this stuff work...it's really something you have to see to believe. We follow that with 1968's "The Exotic Ones" where a strip club in New Orleans captures a swamp monster and displays it as a way to attract a crowd. The lighting is lurid, the strippers are badass, the criminals are ruthless and it's sheer perfection all the way down! If it's not obvious at this point, we LOVED both movies and can't wait to watch more from Mr. Ormond, especially some of the later, religiously-focused stuff! We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. You can email us at flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com. You can also reach us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
Join the boys as they put on their Sunday best to enjoy one of the strangest "movies" yet, by none other than Estus W. Pirkle and filmmaker Ron Ormond. Between threats of hell, destruction, and a communist takeover, they discuss church, the effectiveness of propaganda, Jesus' candy, and why there are so many dead kids in a movie made to be shown in church. Like so many. Way too many. Hell is real, and it's really bad, and it's really important that you repent. In which we come to terms with Ron Ormond's anti-communist, red scare religious propoganda film IF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU, WHAT WILL HORSES DO? (1971). Wow. Just wow. People believe this stuff?
Ron Ormond was a B-movie exploitation director before a near-death experience inspired him to start producing some of the most bizarre and gruesome Christian films ever made. We're joined by Cinematary's Michael O'Malley to discuss two of his surreally morbid collaborations with Baptist preacher Estes Pirkle: 1974's nightmare vision The Burning Hell, and 1971's anti-communist screed If Footmen Tire You, What Will Horses Do? We discuss how Ormond moved from the drive-in to the altar, the not-coincidental collision between evangelical Christianity and anti-Communism, and the effect these gory spectacles (which were shown at church!) would have had on young believers. Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy We continue our investigation on Estus Pirkle — the Baptist preacher whose forays into film with collaborator Ron Ormond are among the most compelling Christian movies ever made due to their eager adoption of grindhouse aesthetics. The sequel to the cult classic IF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU, WHAT WILL HORSES DO? (which we covered last week) is called THE BURNING HELL. It's Pirkle's response to what he sees as an increasingly soft Christian culture that has abandoned teaching that hell is an eternal punishment for sinners and nonbelievers. Pirkle thinks hell is literally real, and that fear of hell is an appropriate tool for converting people to Christianity. In the film, Pirkle (playing himself) meets two tough guys who don't believe in hell. Before Pirkle can convince them otherwise, one of the men is decapitated in a grisly motorcycle accident. The survivor is now confronting the reality that his friend is covered in “tormenting worms” in hell for eternity, and Pirkle's ministering to him guides most of the action of the film. The film is very entertaining and atmospheric, but one can't help but recoil at the lack of compassion Pirkle and his congregation seem to have for the average person, although “compassion” is relative and it's clear Pirkle thinks he's doing the right thing by spreading this dire message. Ash and Scott discuss - is Hell real? Will there be worms there? Will there be movies? Will the movies be good? We also compare the work of Estus Pirkle and Ron Ormond to the era of Hong Kong black magic movies that emerged not long after the release of THE BURNING HELL. In this episode, we're wading into the weird old waters of Christploitation and Evangelical Prophecy Horror, exploring the ways in which certain tenets of fundamentalist Christian doctrine pertaining to the Second Coming and the End of Days found expression in two low budget, high stakes independent features produced in the early 1970s: Ron Ormond’s deliriously gruesome If Footmen Tire You, What Will Horses Do? (1971), and Donald W. Thompson’s widely circulated rapture thriller A Thief In The Night (1972). The episode situates readings of both films within the wider context of a discussion touching upon rapture anxiety, premillennial dispensationalism, revivalism, and the evangelical thriller’s utilisation and weaponization of elements more readily associated with exploitation cinema. On this Easter weekend edition of Parallax Views, filmmaker Brian Rosenquist joins us to discuss the Christian scare films of Ron Ormond. Evangelical convert Ron Ormond, along with his wife June Ormond and the help of Baptist minister Estus W. Pirkle, created supremely bizarre, gory, and shocking movies meant to literally scare the hell out of sinners and convert them to Christianity. Ormond's notorious "Christsploitation" films The Burning Hell, The Believer's Heaven, The Grim Reaper, and the anti-communist Red Scare flick If Footmen Tire You What Will Horses Do? scarred a generation of Sunday school children before becoming sought after cult classics of the cinematic underground vis-à-vis the legendary experimental band Negativland's sampling of If Footmen Tire You What Will Horses Do? in their hit single, played at college radio stations across America, "Christianity is Stupid". Brian fills us in on the life, times, and films of the Ormonds and tells us about his upcoming documentary about the Ormonds on this edition of Parallax Views. Brian Rosenquist

For the first time Devine SINema steps out of bonus episode territory with a look at the 1972 film, If Footmen Tire You, What Will Horsemen Do? This movie takes us to a time when America was in fear of a foreign ideology, marriage was under attack, public schools were taking away our children’s innocence and our country was in desperate need to return to God. Apparently, some things never change. Written by and starring Reverend Estus Pirkle and directed by Ron Ormond, this movie gives us a graphic look into what “will happen” to America if it “continues to engage in immorality” and deny God. Jeff, Adam and Dylan discuss some of the more alarming scenes in this illustrated sermon about the end of days. They also discuss the flaws in the theology put forth in this film. Along with the introduction of a new rating system. this episode contains all the things you’ve come to love about our Divine SINema series. Watching bad Christian movies so you don’t have to.
