I had a great chat with Ruth Amos, inventor and engineer, of Kids Invent Stuff. Ruth says she loves to "bring to life, the weird and wonderful", so I had to talk to her. We talked about Ruth's history in creative expression from lego, to theater and home videos, and he effects these foundations have on her creative career today. Follow Ruth on her Instagram and YouTube as well as Kids Invent Stuff on Instagram and Youtube. Mentions Shawn Brown Makers Waffle
In the season finale, co-star of the popular YouTube channel 'Kids Invent Stuff' Ruth Amos joins us as our first ever guest to discuss all of her pet hates. Grab a brew and tune in.
In this episode, I am delighted to be in conversation with award-winning British inventor, YouTube Channel host, presenter and professional speaker Ruth Amos.Ruth's future took a massive diversion when she was tasked with designing a mobility aid for a member of her design and technology teachers' family who had suffered a stroke. The task quickly escalated from a school GCSE project to a potential business as it became evident that there was no equivalent solution on the market, and Ruth started to receive requests to buy a product that, at this stage, was in prototype form only. On the back of this project, Ruth was named Young Engineer for Britain in 2006, and the decision was made to abandon any thoughts of university and instead set up her company to manufacture and sell https://stairsteady.net/Over the coming years, Ruth built on her initial success and became involved in several companies, at one point acting as an advisor to the UK government. More recently, Ruth has teamed up with her colleague and fellow Young Engineer for Britain Shawn Brown, to start a YouTube Channel aimed at harnessing and embracing the creativity of young people, and Kids Invent stuff was born https://www.youtube.com/c/KidsInventStuffThe channel has been featured on local and international news outlets as well as primetime TV and, to date, has received over two million views. Take a look...It's madness personified, but I love it!It was an absolute pleasure to talk with Ruth as she shared her journey from D&T GCSE project to inventor and business entrepreneur. So grab an hour of me time, walk the dog, take us to the gym, or simply pull up a comfy chair, and enjoy Designed for Life in conversation with Ruth Amos. This podcast has been recorded with the help of our sponsors, The Edge Foundation https://www.edge.co.uk/ inspiring the education system to give all young people across the UK the knowledge, skills and behaviours they need to flourish in their future life and work, and PTC Onshape Providing industry-standard cloud-based CAD to education https://www.ptc.com/en/news/2020/ptc-onshape-education-enterprise-plan-available-free-of-chargeWe are indebted to The Edge and PTC Onshape for their continued support.
TW // Gendered violence TW // Misogyny TW // Stalking For episode 20 we bring back three of our previous guest, Ruth Amos, Allie from Geeky Faye Art and Lindsay Creative to chat about how two middle-aged bearded blokes can be better allies to women and non-binary makers. This might be the first of several episodes on this as we don't think one waffle will be long enough, but we will be back to our normal style next week. There are some hard truths, some possibly triggering experiences shared and we know this is a difficult topic for some, but we don't want to shy away from it because we hope it will be helpful. To our male audience, even if you think you are an ally, please listen humbly and learn. To out non-male audience, we're sorry you have to put up with what you have to put up with on the scale that you have to do. We know we aren't going to solve this but we will stand with you and try. The show-notes, which are slightly different to normal, include some of the pieces of advice or "homework" that came from either the guests or the live audience, can be found as usual in the description of the YouTube video for this episode: https://youtu.be/QaDhih6G2Zs As Makers Waffle we can be found in the following places: Instagram YouTube Twitter Facebook Patreon And our personal accounts are: Jamie Reader: Instagram Andy Pugh: Instagram & YouTube .

We talk about novelty in a patent with Ruth Amos, an inventor, entrepreneur, edutuber, managing director of Stairsteady, and the recipient of the 2006 Young Engineer for Britain.
This week Sue and ASD talk to Ruth Amos about taking a school project and making it into a full business, what it's like to start and run a business, how to be a brilliant public speaker and how being a mum has changed her outlook on work.
What do you want to do when you grow up? Doctor? Astronaut? Fireman? In light of International Women's Day, we're asking if young women's aspirations are limited by their gender? After having a hugely successful career in a male dominated industry, Edwina Dunn decided it was time to change things for women in the working world and founded her charity - The Female Lead - to do just that. Alongside entrepreneur Vanessa Sanyauke and inventor Ruth Amos, she tells Katie and Dr Radha about her campaign to encourage young women into industries where they are under-represented and inspire them to achieve more than they ever imagined!

It was basically a mat you'd leave outside of your bed. The name was the best thing. Up N Mat Em There was a couple of activities as well, like making magnetic slime with Ruth Amos, who runs the YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-glo52BMvZH9PPUamjGIcw (Kids Invent Things) Making solar panel cars with Kisha Bradley from https://www.mybrighttoys.com/ (My Bright Toys) And http://www.discoveryproject.co.uk/ (Alison Buxton) showed the kids how to make a simple circuit to make badges that light up (I didn't see the other things) It was a great day and so good to see this kind of thing happening in Barnsley. And also it was great to introduce the kids to so many potential job opportunities that just let you be creative.
