Statistics say we live in the calmest of times in the history of humanity. However, the world is still a dangerous place. For instance, do you know how to escape from a sinking car? #sinkingcar #survive #survivaltricks TIMESTAMPS Keys, money, and a charged phone 0:43 Apologize if you bump into someone 1:13 Always find at least three exits 1:43 Play the "find a bad guy" game 2:24 On an airplane, count the rows to the emergency exit 3:06 Strengthen your wrists 3:39 Raise your head, and go slowly 4:14 Escaping from a sinking car 4:45 SUMMARY Your phone may become a means of saving other people's lives: you'll be able to call the rescue service in an emergency. Always keep your phone charged. Even if you're sure you're not to blame for bumping into someone on the street, say "sorry" and keep going. You don't know who you ran into. A person you've touched may be carrying a weapon or be drunk or high. Wherever you go, be it a concert, a railway station, or even a school, make sure you see three exits. It can be both easy and hard. Scan the space with your eyes so that even if there's only one door, you'll find at least three ways out. Our intuition is rarely mistaken. If someone appears dangerous to you, then they probably are. Try to keep away from them. If there's smoke, the emergency lighting can be too dim to guide you. When you know for sure the number of rows between your seat and the exit, you can move toward it counting the headrests. There are many potential emergency situations where you may need to hold on to a narrow ledge. A strong grip and trained wrist muscles will allow you to stay safe for as long as it might be needed. When you follow your first instinct, you become prey. Who or whatever is threatening you, slow down, raise your head, and look sideways to see the danger with your peripheral vision. To get out of a sinking car, you should first unbuckle your seat belt. Instead of opening the door, roll the window down. If you don't have your window open, break the glass. However, don't even try breaking the windshield — it is made of extra-strong, crash-resistant triplex safety glass. Many online shops offer special car window-breaking tools at affordable prices. 312: How Can You Improve Your Sense of Smell with Wine? Johannes Frasnelli Has Great Tips

Unreserved Wine Talk

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 20, 2024 41:31

How can you train your sense of smell? Why does smelling require much more focus than our other senses? What is retronasal olfaction and why is it so important when it comes to enjoying wine? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with author Johannes Frasnelli. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks   Highlights Do wine aroma kits help to improve our ability to smell and taste wine? What positive changes occur in the brains of master sommeliers? How does our emotional state influence our ability to perceive scents? Do humans have pheromones, and how can our body odours influence each other? Is there a difference in how our brains process wine aromas compared to synthetic scents? How is olfactory marketing used by certain brands to improve their customer experience? What is the role of retronasal olfaction in wine tasting and flavour perception? What is synesthesia, and how does it relate to perception in wine tasting? What are the main factors that influence the recovery of the sense of smell? Which areas of olfactory research are Johannes most excited about?   Key Takeaways Johannes explains that master sommeliers train their brain's sense of smell just as many people train physically when they go to the gym. The key is to make it challenging. What we can train most about smell is its connection with language. It's important to talk about the smells we detect with each other. It's not enough just to have odors go by. You have to actively try to identify them. Smelling is difficult for humans Johannes observes. We can oversee a visual scenery very quickly. With smelling, we don't have these abilities. When we smell something in our environment, it is much more work for us to identify the particular odors, and we have to concentrate. We don't do that a lot. So you need to have the mental spare time to focus. Johannes says that retronasal olfaction is not only when you swallow wine, it's also when you have it in your mouth. When sommeliers swish the wine around their mouths, the molecules heat up and get pushed up into the nasal cavity, which is also part of the retro nasal component. You can test this by just pinching your nose. You won't smell because it's blocked in the front, the air cannot enter. Then as soon as you release the nose, then you will have this additional smell dimension. Retronasal olfaction is really the key player when it comes to smell and flavor perception.   About Johannes Frasnelli After being trained as a physician at University of Vienna, Austria, Johannes Frasnelli was a visiting scientist in research labs in Dresden, Germany, in Philadelphia, PA, in Stockholm, Sweden, and in Bozen, Italy. He is currently a professor for human anatomy at the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivières (UQTR), while also being a regular researcher at the Research Center of the Sacré-Coeur Hospital of Montreal. His research focuses on the physiology, the psychology and the pathology of the sense of smell.             To learn more, visit https://www.nataliemaclean.com/312.

One of the benefits of being in business and academia for years is that we have a lot of experience running workshops. This episode is a brain dump of all the stuff you won't learn in a book but is critical to the successful outcome of your program.   The first and perhaps most critical step is breaking the ice. By setting a relaxed and open tone, you ease participants into the session, ensuring they're ready to engage. A simple question at the start can do wonders—something as quirky as asking attendees to share something strange about themselves. This activity breaks down barriers and injects some fun into the proceedings, setting the stage for a lively and productive workshop.   As a facilitator, it's vital to approach the workshop without a predefined answer or outcome in mind. Your role is to guide participants in finding solutions, ensuring participants take ownership of the results. This approach fosters a deeper connection to the material and encourages lasting change.    For instance, when working with a client like Maersk Line, the world's largest shipping company, it's important to ask the right questions and provide tools rather than answers. This method leads to better results and enhances the participants' sense of accomplishment.   Also, flexibility is key when it comes to planning your workshop. While having an agenda is important, adjust it as discussions evolve, allowing for deeper exploration of ideas and ensuring that everyone is on the same page.  Similarly, consider the group dynamics when dividing attendees into smaller teams. Mixing personalities and ensuring a balance of perspectives can prevent dominant voices from stifling creativity and lead to more innovative solutions.   In this episode, we dive into these essential strategies for leading a workshop that leaves a lasting impact. Drawing from years of experience, we explore practical tips to ensure your workshops are engaging, effective, and memorable for all participants.   If you listen, you will also learn the following:   Ryan wrote a script for Broadway, and Colin is married to his stepsister. No, really. How to effectively manage group dynamics by balancing personality types and seniority levels. The importance of having a clear goal for the workshop and aligning all activities towards achieving it. Why off-site workshops can prevent distractions and boost creativity. The significance of determining the ideal team size for different workshop activities. Techniques to ensure follow-through on workshop outcomes back in the workplace. The impact of physical space on group energy and interaction during the workshop.

8 GREAT TIPS FOR SURVIVAL AT SEA

Most of us adore beach resorts and go to one of the large saltwater bodies at least once a year. However, we shouldn't forget that the sea is as attractive as it is wayward. We at Bright Side wondered how a person who happened to be in the open sea should behave. It turns out there are several rules that aren't at all difficult to remember. Despair is your most dangerous enemy. Don't give up hope of being saved. There are many stories of people who were found in the open sea months after their disappearance. For instance, 25-year-old sailor Poon Lim, who worked on a British merchant ship, survived alone 133 days in the open sea. After a shipwreck, he managed to find a raft with fresh water, cookies, flares, and a flashlight. Every day, Lim ate only 2 cookies and made 3 sips of water. To avoid muscle atrophy, he even floated around the raft twice a day. As you can see, human possibilities are endless. The main thing is to keep calm and hope for the best. TIMESTAMPS Calm down 0:35 Choose the right swimming style 0:57 Find something that floats 1:37 Take care of clothes 1:55 Decide what you'll eat 2:16 Provide yourself with liquid 3:01 Save yourself properly 4:02 Don't lose hope 5:06 SUMMARY: - Panic definitely won't help you. It can cloud your judgment and make you lose the rhythm of breathing. Therefore, the first thing you should do is to calm down. - The style of swimming you choose determines how long your strength will last. In calm water, it's better to swim on your back. If waves splash around you, it's better to swim on your belly. - If you're in the open sea as a result of a shipwreck or an airplane water landing, there must be plenty of things around you that perfectly keep afloat. It will be even better if it's a boat or a raft with which ships are equipped. - Remember that open sunlight can be extremely dangerous. So don't remove your clothes — they'll protect you from the sun. - If you have rations, divide them into small daily portions. This will make them last for a long time, and you won't have problems with digestion. - Try to fish even if you have stores of food. After all, fish contain some liquid. - You have to consume the liquid constantly but never drink seawater. - Try to ensure that you always have a couple of empty containers left for collecting rainwater. According to studies, drinking untreated rainwater is safe for your health. - • If you found fluorescein, dissolve it in the water when you see an airplane or ship. It forms a bright spot around you which can be easily seen from the air and from afar. Jesus was a revolutionary in every sense of the word—especially in the way He treated women! Whether you are a devoted Christian seeking a deeper understanding of Jesus' teachings or an individual interested in exploring the timeless wisdom of one of history's most influential figures, Jesus, the Ultimate Ladies' Man offers a unique and inspiring perspective. It invites readers to reimagine and appreciate the far-reaching impact of Jesus' love and respect for women.” (Quote from Sarah's website) Find all Scripture references from this episode at http://jennyzentz.com/podcast-sarah-holley Resources mentioned in this episode: - Jesus, the Ultimate Ladies' Man  - Sarah's website - http://screamfree.com/ - Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes: Cultural Studies in the Gospels - Living By the Book: The Art and Science of Reading the Bible - Becoming Free Indeed: My Story of Disentangling Faith from Fear By Jinger Duggar Vuolo - Women of the Word: How to Study the Bible with Both Our Hearts and Our Minds By Jen Wilkin -https://www.blueletterbible.org/ - Vine's Expository Dictionary of the Old and New Testament Words - The Complete Word Study Dictionary: New Testament - https://www.gotquestions.org/ - Connect with Sarah: https://sarahholleyspeaks.com/contact/ - God's Whisper in a Mother's Chaos: Bringing Peace Home - A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 By Phillip Keller Enter to Win a FREE BOOK! I did a podcast a few weeks ago that was billed as a canoe and kayak podcast but my guest and I spent a lot of time on Kayaks and not much on canoes. Some of you took me to task and asked for more information on fly fishing from canoes, so I asked retired president and CEO of Orvis, Perk Perkins [49:06], to share his tips with us. Perk fishes from a canoe more than anyone else I know, and has been using these craft all his life. He gives us some great tips on making fly fishing from a canoe more fun and productive.  In the fly box this week, we have some fascinating questions from listeners, including: Should l I use a double taper or weight forward line on my small stream rod? If you fish barbless dry flies with a dry/dropper rig, won't the knot slip off the hook? What can I do to lessen my shoulder involvement in casting? I have severe arthritis in my right shoulder. Should I learn to cast left-handed? Do tippet rings make tying on a dropper less fussy? Won't the fish see a tippet ring? What is your opinion on attractor patterns? What do you think of UV resins and tying materials? If I want to fish a leader with a light butt section, what diameter should the permanent loop be on my fly line? The permanent loop on my fly line got damaged. My fly line says "cold to moderate temperatures". Can I also use this line for fishing for bass during the summer?  Do flies need to be perfect and symmetrical? I s road kill of any use in fly tying? We were catching hickory shad on spoons we made using Krystal Flash and UV resin. People told us we weren't fly fishing. What's your take on flies that aren't really "flies"? How are fly rods most often broken? What rod do I need to make my mono rig work better? I see many color variations in pre-made dubbing blends, for instance one March Brown dubbing is brown and another one is light tan. Do insects vary in color? Does color even make a difference?
