What is The Exphoria Code all about then? Official blurb... “Very possibly the definitive espionage thriller of the early 21st century” – Alan Moore Brigitte Sharp, a cyber-espionage specialist with MI6, has been deskbound and in therapy for three years, after her first field mission in Syria went disastrously wrong. But now one of her best friends has been murdered, and Bridge believes his death is connected to strange posts appearing on the internet, carrying encrypted hidden messages. When Bridge decodes the messages, she discovers evidence of a mole inside a top-secret Anglo-French military drone project. Her MI6 bosses force her back into the field, sending her undercover in France to find and expose the mole… who may also be her friend’s killer. But the truth behind the Exphoria code is worse than she could have imagined. Soon she’s on the run, desperate and alone – as a nuclear terrorist plot unfolds and threatens everything Bridge has left to live for. Sounds intriguing, so who is Antony Johnston? Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Action flicks are back in vogue. From the Bourne films to John Wick, these kinetic films have a bit of a throwback to the 1980’s but are in many ways different. Some such as John Wick have the feel of an exploitation film, and not surprisingly, the new film Atomic Blonde is a bit like it, especially since the co-director of John Wick is the director of Atomic Blonde. At the end of the Cold War, spy intrigue comes to the divided city of Berlin. Just weeks before the Berlin Wall’s demise, a MI-6 agent escapes from the East with a list of every Soviet secret agent in the world. After his assassination, a rogue Soviet spy has the list. MI-6 agent, Lorraine Broughton, is sent to Berlin to retrieve the list before it gets into the wrong hands. The movie is based off the graphic novel, The Coldest City, and directed by stunt coordinator David Leitch. Charlize Theron produces this starring vehicle for her. Having come off Prometheus and Mad Max Fury Road, she has re-invented herself as an action star to go along with her many dramatic roles. Dark Discussions Podcast takes a look at this well received genre movie. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM

Charlize Theron stars as an ass-kicking British spy in this thriller whose slick, shiny trailers took the internet by storm earlier this year. Tired of waiting for a female James Bond to fall in her lap, Theron secured the rights to Antony Johnston’s graphic novel The Coldest City and made it happen for herself. The film is directed by former stuntman and part-time John Wick director David Leitch and set in Berlin just days before the Wall came down.

This week we take a tour around Spain with Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan, and then revisit the cold calculations of murder in 1989 Berlin. Michael Winterbottom's The Trip to Spain is the third in a series of would-be travelogues that blends reality and farce to excellent effect. Brydon and Coogan play versions of themselves, again musing on death, fame, sex - as well as the passing of David Bowie.   In between driving each other to distraction with dueling impersonations, the pair enjoy amazing food lovingly prepared onscreen and go on yet another literary tour, this time following the foolhardy exploits of Cervantes's Don Quixote.  Less literary fun is to be had in David Leitch's Cold War espionage thriller Atomic Blonde - although Bowie *does* of course pop up again. This is Berlin after all.  Adapting Antony Johnston and Sam Hart's comic The Coldest City to the big screen, Charlize Theron stars as Lorraine Broughton, an MI6 operative sent to Berlin to recover a McGuffin taken from a murdered former lover by a KGB agent.  There she encounters James McAvoy's gone-native agent Percival, who clearly knows more than he's letting on, and is tailed by a French agent played by Sofia Boutella.  Complete with a stormer of a soundtrack of 80s hits, Theron carries the picture with a heady mix of cool glamour and a capacity for savage violence.  This week Stevie and Emmet also recommend - Tim Powers's Medusa's Web Birthright by Joshua Williamson and Andrei Bressan Jon Ronson's So You've Been Publicly Shamed

In this episode, Wendi examines the creators of two very different spy books from Image Comics. Both writers tell stories of the cold war influenced by their impressions growing up.  First, she talks to Rich Tommaso, writer and artist of "Spy Seal". In "The Corten Steel Phoenix" he tells the story of a seal forced into dangerous circumstances beyond his control. He uses anthropomorphic animals to weave a web of politics and intrigue.  After the break, she has a chat with Antony Johnston on the day the film, "Atomic Blonde" is released. Based on his graphic novel "The Coldest City", Charlize Theron portrays MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton in her very cool, calculated style. He discusses his involvement in the filmmaking process and how much it detracts from and stays true to the source material. He has a new series out now, "Ghost Station Zero"- vol. 2 of his series "Codename: Baboushka", an action packed, pulp thriller with a sexy Russian female lead.  You can find other great podcasts  on the network as well as comic and entertainment news by jumping on twitter and following @taylornetwork

She plays Lorraine Broughton, an MI6 agent sent to investigate another agent's murder in Berlin during the final days before the Wall falls. There are the usual spy machinations, but let's talk about what really makes this movie special: the fight scenes, the fashion, and the soundtrack. All three are fantastic! Earlier this month we covered THE COLDEST CITY, which was the inspiration for this film. How does the movie compare to the book, and how did they expand a 176-page graphic novel into a two-hour movie? And does the old age of the book always being better than the movie hold true?

The first one features Bill and Agent Palmer with a review and breakdown of The Coldest City by Antony Johnston and Sam Hart. We chose this for a few reasons, firstly, it's a graphic novel and we are always looking for great comic stories to recommend, secondly, it's soon to be on screen as the motion picture The Atomic Blonde and it interests us to see how anything is adapted, lastly, it revolves around spies near the "end" the Cold War, right before the Berlin Wall comes down - and that's an amazing setting. This time I'm joined by Antony Johnston. Antony previously appeared in Decompressed 15, talking about THE COLDEST CITY. But that was in front of an audience at Game City, so we were on our best behaviour. This time we're mumbling on Skype, as is a comic creators preferred form of communication. Except passive-aggression, obv. Anyway! Antony's career as a writer is divided between his work in Games and Comic. In comics, until recently his signature work was the post-apocalyptic series WASTELAND. That may be changing, as he's recently launched two new series via Image. The first, UMBRAL is an excellent Dark Fantasy book. The second, and the subject of today's discussion is, THE FUSE, his book with Justin Greenwood, Shari Chankamma and Ed Brisson.  The Fuse is available to buy in your local comic shop, as well as digitally through comixology and direct from Image.  The show notes and study aids can be found over here.

Something a little different this week. A podcast rather than not a podcast! No, really. It is actually different, as it was recorded in front of a live audience in Nottingham Game City back in (er) the past. October. Man! Doesn't time fly when you're incredibly busy (or rather, moderately busy and lazy). Anyway! This time I talk to Antony Johnston about his collaboration with Sam Hart, THE COLDEST CITY. This spy thriller set at the very last days of the Cold War is also the first complete OGN we've covered, meaning we wander over the whole thing. The audience also altered the dynamic, as sitting in front of a crowd, on expensive chairs in a spotlight does has a way of making you want to go all serious. So less nob gags than normal. And you'll find all the show notes here.
