Check then out on SHOPAssociation.org Today, EPISODE 83… I talk with Bryan Meszaros founder of EpenEye Global. Bryan is a 25-year veteran of the digital signage and experience design industry, known for blending innovation with measurable impact. Naturally, in a world that is increasingly digitally mediated, Bryan's business is significantly focused on the emergence of Artificial Intelligence as a tool in his experience place-making toolbox. We'll get to more of how Bryan sees the use of AI in digital applications in brand experience places in a minute but... first a few thoughts…*                     *                          *                          *I grew up on Star Trek. They original version with Shatner as Captain James T Kirk. These were the sightly campy years in black and white but wonderfully prescient in foretelling what was to come. I used to say that my father, who lived to the ripe old age of 97 was so into it that was holding out until he could just beam up through the transporter to the next phase of his existence. We all watched, my 4 brothers and I every week, my mom? Well not so much…I got used to thinking about digital communication, robots, space travel and technology integrated into our lives facilitating everything from washing dishes to extending lifespans. There isn't a day that goes by now where my media consumption doesn't include something on the evolution of Artificial Intelligence. Both the amazing and the alarming.  How it will make workplaces completely different replacing much of what we now do with human brain and brawn with algorithms and computer chips that can fit 1000 computers from the old Star Trek days on your fingertip. How it is changing the way human brains are wired, though when it comes to our neural networks that trundle along at a speed ridiculously slow compared to the digital pace of change that is exponential and moving at the speed of light. How as a visualization tool it is becoming indistinguishable from real life people and places. Creating deep fakes that are so good at impersonating humans that avatars are no longer cartoonish but facsimiles of us that are, well, exactly like us - but whose knowledge base is the compendium of all human knowledge that can be accessed on the internet and provide cogent answers to well-crafted prompts and have them served up in a few seconds. ‘The times they are a changin' but at a pace that even Dillan couldn't have imagined. Don't even get me started about when we finally, and I don't think it is going to take too long, get to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and what that portends for humankind. I am often concerned for my sons and the world they are growing into as young adults. I wish sometimes that they'd have had the experience of growing up in the 60's and 70's when times were simpler – but of course they weren't really. Every decade has it's messes – sometime beautiful sometimes not and sometimes each of these ends of the human experience spectrum were happening at the same time. What we are experiencing now is evolution at a revolutionary pace. A slow simmering flame has exploded into a blast furn ace of change propelling us all, whether we like it or not, on a path that at times seems to be heading towards the edger of a cliff. Concerned? Well you'd have good reason to be.But then again, if you accept the Ray Bradburry adage of sometimes while standing at the edge of the cliff ‘you need to jump and build your wings on the way down', may we all then transform in midflight into some sort of lemmings with wings. The subject of AI has surfaced a number of times on this podcast notably with data visualization artists like Refik Anadol and architect artist Samar Younes,  spatial computing specialist and near futurist Neil Redding and Synchronicity Architect Justin Bolognino. Each of these creators and theorists shape the AI narrative to their own ends, each of them proclaiming the virtues and vices of the technology.Uses of AI in design and architecture, as well as other industries, is multifarious and, I would admit, well beyond my more general appreciation for using it as an ideation tool and writing assistant in my everyday work.In the world of experience design there are at least 2 ways - although I would guess many more - to look at it:- on a very basic level there is the physical integration of digital media facilitated by Ai and then there is actual content that ends up on the digital interface – be it a touch screen kiosk, a display array in a sports bar or an enormous multi-story wall in Times Square. Getting these screens to work with the environment is always a challenge. Mainly I believe because they come as an afterthought rather than an integrated design solution and part of a digital experience strategy. In the second case of content, one size does not fit all. Places and people are different. The same content being played on those screens all day are visual noise detracting from overall experience rather than enhancing it. These days, every minute of every day things are changing. Why should digital content on screen of any size and shape be any different? If purveyors of brand experiences are not changing content to adapt to customers everchanging needs across the journey, digital content simply becomes part of the visual texture of the environment slipping into irrelevancy and lending nothing to the embodied memory of a place. This is one area Ai is able to change the game – creating content to meet customer needs more directly. Now it would be difficult, if not impossible to change digital content in Times Square to continually meet the needs of the thousands of people in that digital epicenter in New York. But then we all carry cell phones – person digital devices. All of those phones are geolocated. Each of those those has an address – a personal identifier about who it belongs to and bunch of other information about you – personal, financial, home address, etc.Are a bunch of guys at google looking at you individually as you make your way across Times Square – not really – but your Hazel and Gretel trail of ones and zeros from purchases, GPS searches, app use, etc., etc., tell a lot about you should anyone want to do a little digital forensics. The idea here is that we are giving up this information every time we turn our phones on. That information isn't snatched from us without our consent (generally) it's in our service agreement terms and conditions – that impossibly long text that most of us scroll through to the end and click “agree.”But that information could be used to make your path across Times Square more relevant to you. Perhaps your device communicates with other devices or screens and changes the content that you see. This isn't quite Minority Report yet, where Tom Cruise courses through a store and the displays are talking to him because they recognize his retinas – but it is possible to create messaging that is more personalized to you, specifically, as a customer.Digital signage can change either on the wall of as shelf signage. It is about recognizing your customer and understanding that they are used to creating experience narratives that are more relevant to them because they, in part, have contributed to their making. Want to stay relevant to your customers, new or old? Support their collaboration in the shopping journey offering up opportunities for them to write themselves into the narrative. Story and strategy must be connected. Doing good by your customer is about building a relationship and Ai can support that effort but including engaging digital content that recognizes them as individuals, with relatable and relevant messaging. But the whole enterprise needs to be seamless. Sometime I think that the best tech is the tech you don't see, but it think it is also perfectly OK to see it if there are no disconnects in journey. Signature moments in the customer journey have to link up so the customer follows the bouncing ball from their first connection point through the purchase moment and then beyond. And this is where this episode's guest comes into the picture.Bryan Meszaros is a 25-year veteran of the digital signage and experience design industry, known for blending innovation with measurable impact. As the founder of OpenEye Global, he proved that a small, focused team can deliver big results and helped shape the early evolution of digital engagement.Bryan was the youngest President of SEGD and the first with a digital centric background, while also contributing to the Digital Signage Federation and Shop! GDP Script/ Top Stories for September 13th Publish Date: September 13th PRE-ROLL: From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Saturday, September 13th and Happy Birthday to Joni Sledge I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by Gwinnett KIA Mall of Georgia. Health insurance changes coming to Georgia Paraglider hospitalized after crash at Barrow County Airport Peach Bowl and College Football Playoff Foundation team up for makeover at Lilburn Middle School All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Health insurance changes coming to Georgia Brace yourselves, Georgia. Health-care advocates are sounding the alarm: insurance rates on the government marketplace are set to spike next year. Why? Insurers blame federal budget cuts and the end of COVID-era tax credits, according to Anthony Wright of Families USA. And who’s hit hardest? Folks without job-based coverage—think restaurant servers, gig workers, barbers, plumbers, and other self-employed Georgians. The numbers are grim. KFF says half a million could lose coverage, while Georgians for a Healthy Future estimates 340,000, with rates jumping 75%. STORY 2: Paraglider hospitalized after crash at Barrow County Airport  A paraglider crashed at Barrow County Airport in Winder on Thursday afternoon and was rushed to the hospital, according to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office. Details? Pretty scarce. Deputies and firefighters got the call around 1:04 p.m. about the crash. When they arrived, the man was breathing but unresponsive—scary stuff. He’s now in the hospital, and the FAA is stepping in to investigate what went wrong. Sheriff Jud Smith praised the quick-thinking citizen who called 911, saying their actions helped first responders get there fast. STORY 3: Peach Bowl and College Football Playoff Foundation team up for makeover at Lilburn Middle School Lilburn Middle School just got a serious upgrade, thanks to Peach Bowl, Inc. and the College Football Playoff Foundation. As part of their Extra Yard Makeover initiative, the school’s STEM lab was completely renovated—and unveiled Tuesday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Students and teachers got their first look at the revamped space, and let’s just say, jaws dropped. The $200,000 partnership has already transformed eight schools, including Hope Hill Elementary and North Clayton Middle. Oh, and one lucky teacher? Surprised with $1,000 for classroom projects. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets 9 STORY 4: Hussey Gay Bell expands Duluth architectural studio with addition of Victor Rodriguez Hussey Gay Bell has welcomed Victor Rodriguez as a project manager in its Duluth office, and it sounds like they’ve landed a pro. Rodriguez, who calls Duluth home, brings nearly 10 years of experience in architectural design, project management, and permitting. He’s got a knack for navigating codes, reviewing shop drawings, and keeping clients happy—basically, the guy knows his stuff. A Kennesaw State grad with additional training in project and practice management, Rodriguez is set to make waves in the firm’s seven core markets, from healthcare to transportation. Founded in 1958, Hussey Gay Bell now operates eight offices across the Southeast. STORY 5: Valdosta State president leaving for California post Valdosta State University President Richard Carvajal is heading west. Come January 20, he’ll take the helm at California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt, leaving behind nearly a decade of leadership at VSU. Carvajal stepped in during a rocky time in 2017—he was the seventh president in just eight years—and brought much-needed stability. Under his watch, VSU hit milestones: record graduate enrollment, campus renovations, and a $39 million performing arts center in progress. Break 3: STORY 6: Buford woman wins Mrs. America crown Growing up in tiny Glennville, Georgia, Paige Ewing (née Armstrong) dabbled in pageants—Junior Miss Tattnall County, Miss Pinewood Christian Academy, even Miss Georgia Onion (yes, that’s a thing). At 18, she won Miss Tattnall County and competed in Miss Georgia, but after that? She figured her pageant days were over. Life moved on. Fast forward to this summer: Paige, now a wife, mom, business owner, and grief coach, was crowned Mrs. Georgia. Then, in August, she took the national title—Mrs. America. STORY 7: GET OUT THERE: 5 things to do this weekend in Gwinnett County — Sept. 12-14 Travis Tritt in Buford When: Saturday, 6 p.m. Where: Buford Community Center, 2200 Buford Highway NE, Buford Country music icon Travis Tritt hits Buford this Saturday, joined by Drake White and Tyler Reese Tritt. GDP Script/ Top Stories for September 11th Publish Date: September 11th PRE-ROLL: From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Thursday, September 11th and Happy birthday to Tom Landry I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. Netherworld set to open Sept. 19 Grieving parents urge self-protection as lawmakers struggle to rein in social media State tax collections on the rise in August Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on fast food All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: Ingles Markets 8 STORY 1: Netherworld set to open Sept. 19 This fall, Netherworld Haunted House in Stone Mountain is cranking the terror dial to 11. For its 29th season, the legendary haunt promises its longest, wildest, most jaw-dropping experience yet—think blockbuster effects, insane sets, and creatures straight out of your worst nightmares. Opening Sept. 19 for 35 nights of chaos, this year’s lineup includes “Monsters Attack!,” the grotesque carnival horrors of “Grendel’s Feast,” and the gut-wrenching “Oblivion: Return of the Mangler.” And the midway? Packed with creepy photo ops, escape games, and snacks like light-up cotton candy and “blood bags” for sipping. STORY 2: Grieving parents urge self-protection as lawmakers struggle to rein in social media Vincent LaBella didn’t realize his daughter was struggling until it was too late. Amaya, just a young teen, seemed like any other kid glued to her phone—always texting, always scrolling. But after hosting a small party at their Buckhead home in February, she died by suicide. Her Snapchat told the story: her friend group had turned on her, bombarding her with cruel messages for hours. TikTok’s algorithm didn’t help, feeding her sad songs and dark content, pulling her deeper. “It was poison,” LaBella said. He and other grieving parents are now urging lawmakers to rein in social media’s unchecked influence. STORY 3: State tax collections on the rise in August Georgia’s tax collections ticked up 3.2% in August compared to the same time last year, pulling in $2.41 billion, the state Department of Revenue said Tuesday. What’s behind the bump? Individual income tax receipts rose 1.8%, thanks to a nearly 10% drop in refunds. Sales tax collections also jumped—up 8.2%. But not everything climbed. Corporate income taxes, which make up a smaller slice of the pie, dropped 11%, down $4.5 million from last year. Meanwhile, gas and motor fuel taxes saw a modest 3.2% increase, adding $6.3 million to the state’s coffers. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. This fall, more than 12,777 students are enrolled—the second-highest fall enrollment in the school’s history and the 10th straight semester of growth. The freshman class alone boasts over 2,100 new faces, and international enrollment jumped 7.5%. Health sciences saw an 18% spike, with education close behind at 11%. As GGC marks 20 years, it’s come a long way—from 118 students to nearly 13,000. STORY 5: Gwinnett County Fair gears up for fun and funnel cakes The Gwinnett County Fair is back this week in Lawrenceville, bringing its usual mix of rides, livestock, and—you guessed it—funnel cakes. For over 70 years, it’s been a local tradition, and this year promises a few new twists. Bee Vang, now in her second year as operations manager, is ready for the chaos. New this year? Circus Incredible, featuring Lyric Wallenda of the famous Flying Wallendas, and a magic show with Captain Jim. Plus, a “Shopping Mall” packed with local vendors. Oh, and clear bags only—don’t forget. From being the first employee in 1991, even before the economic reforms came in, Mr. Nagesh takes us on a fascinating journey of how he helped shape how India shops. He shares the incredible story of launching the first Shoppers Stop in just 90 days before Diwali from a converted theater in Mumbai. Learn about the crucial early focus on experience with self-service and the challenges of convincing both customers and suppliers. Discover how the Indian consumer has evolved, the aspirations behind their choices, and the surprising lessons learned during the expansion across metro tier two three cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Jaipur. Mr. Nagesh also delves into the impact of e-commerce, revealing that Shoppers Stop was one of the first ecom companies in India. He shares his perspective on the future of omni channel retail, the role of shopping malls, and the crucial metrics for evaluating retail companies, emphasizing cash flow and margin per square foot. Beyond his legendary role at Shoppers Stop after 34 years, Mr. Nagesh passionately discusses his current venture, TRAIN (Trust for Retailers and Retail Associates of India), and his mission to give back by empowering retail associates and persons with disabilities. This is a must-listen episode packed with invaluable business wisdom, personal anecdotes, and a deep understanding of the Indian market.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Recorded live at the CommerceNext show in New York City, the two Canadians delve deeply into the current and future state of retail, blending global expertise with practical insights from the ground up.The conversation begins with Jim's background and a look at McMillan Doolittle's role in driving innovation across various retail formats. Known for their globally respected annual Retail Innovations report, Jim explains how international partners nominate the most forward-thinking concepts, regardless of whether they achieve commercial success. From trailblazing store formats, such as Printemps' architectural marvel in Manhattan, to localization strategies that shape international brand launches, Jim shares examples that reflect where retail is headed next. The duo then shifts to a frank discussion about the collapse of Hudson's Bay and what it signals for the broader department store format. Comparing North American challenges with the success of Japanese models that utilize a leased brand approach, Jim highlights how changing consumer behaviour—especially in beauty and apparel—has fragmented traditional retail categories. He argues that the decline of department stores is less a retail apocalypse and more a natural part of the lifecycle of formats. As the conversation moves to unified commerce and digital transformation, Jim emphasizes that success isn't just about tech—it's about culture. Companies that embrace a testing and analytics-driven mindset have a competitive edge. He also discusses the generational shift in expectations, including the normalization of paid same-hour delivery via platforms like DoorDash and Uber Eats. The episode wraps with insights from GELF's work helping global brands expand across borders. Jim reveals how localization, unified commerce strategies, and innovative partnerships with distributors are fueling cross-border growth—even amid global trade uncertainty. With AI, logistics disruptions, and rising tariffs reshaping the terrain, Jim calls for nimble thinking and sharper execution from brands and their ecosystems. This rich, wide-ranging discussion offers a panoramic view of retail's past, present, and future—making it essential listening for anyone navigating the changing commerce landscape. Today we had the very exciting and interesting opportunity to visit with Jim Grech, President and CEO of Peabody. Jim was appointed as CEO in June 2021 and brings more than 30 years of experience across the coal and natural resources space. His career includes leadership roles as CEO of Wolverine Fuels, President of Nexus Gas Transmission, EVP and CCO of CONSOL Energy, and Vice President of DTE Energy. Peabody, founded in 1883, is one of the leading coal producers in the U.S., operating 17 surface and underground mines across the U.S. and Australia. We were thrilled to hear Jim's perspective on the evolving role of coal in both the U.S. and global energy markets. In our conversation, Jim shares background on his decision to join Peabody during a period of financial and market uncertainty and outlines the company's progress in recent years, including repayment of $1.5B in secured debt, reinstatement of a dividend and stock buyback program, and reinvestment in U.S. and Australian assets. We discuss how to motivate a coal workforce amid global anti-coal sentiment, Peabody's asset footprint, the strategic importance of the Powder River Basin (PRB) and the untapped potential to export PRB coal to Asia, the advantages of U.S. coal relative to coal in other parts of the world, and the vast abundance of U.S. coal, with U.S. coal reserves containing more energy than any other nation holds in any single energy resource. We explore the distinctions between thermal and metallurgical coal, global coal demand and outlook, the longevity of coal infrastructure with new plants expected to operate for 30-50 years, the improved environmental footprint of modern coal plants and outdated misconceptions, coal's role in poverty reduction and economic growth in developing nations, and the push to codify U.S. regulatory changes into legislation for permanence beyond changing administrations. Jim shares his perspective on coal's role in grid stability and delivering lower, more stable electricity prices, state-level legislative trends supporting reliability requirements for coal plants, the current status and underutilization of the U.S. coal fleet, and renewed interest from industrial users and datacenters seeking long-term, dependable power sources. We examine investor trends including the emerging investor focus on international coal markets, international market dynamics and growth opportunities across metallurgical and thermal coal, and much more. We close by asking Jim for his top takeaway, and he highlights the importance of being open-minded about coal's net benefits, particularly regarding its role in global energy access, industrial development, and improving standards of living. It was our pleasure to host Jim and we greatly enjoyed the discussion. Mike Bradley opened the discussion by noting that bond, commodity and equity markets have largely roundtripped to their June 12th closing levels (prior to the Israeli strike on Iran). From a bond market perspective, the 10-year bond yield (~4.3%) has essentially roundtripped and traders are now focused on upcoming economic data. In crude markets, WTI spiked to a high of ~$78.50/bbl on Monday following the U.S. strike over the weekend of Iranian nuclear sites, but has since pulled back to ~$65/bbl amid reports of a “proposed” Iranian/Israeli ceasefire, which is ~$3/bbl lower than June 12th price levels and ~$5/bbl above June trading lows. From an Energy equity standpoint, Energy has also roundtripped and is now trading modestly below (~2%) June 12th levels as energy investors begin refocusing their attention on the 2H'25/1H'26 global oil surplus. From a broader market standpoint, the S&P 500 is now ~0.5% higher than June 12th levels and within 1% of all-time highs. Broader markets are now in the process of transitioning away from Mideast conflict back towards U.S. domestic policy. Mike concluded by noting that investors are beginning to refocus on the odds of Trump'

The last time British-Iranian theatre maker Javaad Alipoor joined us was way back in May of 2021 when we talked about Rich Kids: A History of Shopping Malls in Tehran — which at the time we said was “an incredible multi-media theatre piece that links a constellation of Big Ideas into an incredibly human story.”His most recent work Things Hidden Since the Foundation of the World is just about to wrap up it's tour of the US and is the final part of a trilogy of plays – after The Believers Are But Brothers and Rich Kids – that interrogate how technology, global politics and fracturing identities are changing the world.Exploring the themes of the trilogy is exactly what we do in this wide ranging conversation with one of our favorite artists to talk with.Warning: there is a description of a fairly gruesome murder, but we do not dwell on it for long. We do dwell on geopolitics on this episode which was recorded before the election in the United States.SHOW NOTESThings Hidden Since the Foundation of the World - Washington D.C.
