Host Ben Rice travels to Davis, CA to sit down with Ryan Fry and Trenton Yackzan of the legendary Sudwerk, with special guest Paulina Olivares of the Sacramento Pink Boots Society and co-host of Barley & Me Presents: Leonard Malting, our beer movie offshoot. In this episode, we talk about the past, present, and future of Sudwerk specifically and beer in general, in three separate parts, recorded in their new outdoor seating area, in their new restaurant, and in their meeting hall. In part 3, we're joined by surprise guest (he just happened to be there while we recorded), Chris White of White Labs!Join us as we discuss the origins of what was once America's #1 craft brewery for pints poured, including how it started as a hobby for Trenton's grandfather and his friends and how their original brewer stopped making beer for Sudwerk (and how the design of the brewhouse was meant to keep it from happening). Plus! Professional pilsner battles! Gateway beers! Open fermentation! And so much more, like the ever-hovering Year of the Lager, getting ahead of trends, and how old school marketing and education might help move craft beer forward in a drasticly changing market. In this mini pod episode the girls discuss the latest controversy involving Jamie Koe, Ryan Fry, Chris Schille, and DJ Kidby who were kicked out of a tour event in Red Deer for drunk and disorderly behaviour.
Chapter 1
Loser Jamie Koe N.W.T. curling star Jamie Koe is apologizing for his team's drunken behaviour in an Alberta bonspeil that led to them being disqualified and kicked out of a curling club. Koe and teammates Ryan Fry, Chris Schille and DJ Kidby were kicked out and disqualified from the Red Deer Curling Classic for getting too drunk during the event. On Monday, Koe and Schille both issued public apologies on Twitter to fans and event staff on Twitter. During the team's match in the 'B' draw — a consolation round — Fry broke three brooms. Koe said that he removed himself from the match because he was too drunk to play, leaving his team shorthanded. After the match, Fry put a hole in the wall of one of the locker rooms at the Pidherney Curling Club in Red Deer, Alta. Team Koe was then kicked out of the arena and forfeited their next match, said Wade Thurber, the manager of the curling club. Thurber said that Fry has offered to pay for the damages to the locker room. Winner Jessie Rix and Anthony Butler from New York City One of the best stories of the New York City Marathon will involve a blind runner who lost his vision, his sighted trainer and running partner, and their serendipitous love story.

I first met Trent in January of 2016 at a San Francisco Beer Week event called SourFest. Of the 38 sours, my favorite beer was Trent’s sour doppelbock called Uncle Fester. Sudwerk was founded in 1989 by Trent’s grandfather Dean and a partner. After graduating from Cal Poly in 2008, Trent and his friend Ryan Fry returned to Davis and started working at the brewery. They treated it like a start-up and since taking over ownership, Trent and Ryan have infused Sudwerk with energy and innovation.
