In this message we explore Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan Women at the Well. Why did the Jewish people despise the Samaritans and why does the Gospel of John say that Jesus "had to go" to Samaria when most Jewish people would go around it? Who was this woman and why was it important that Jesus speak with her? Listen in as we unpack those questions and find some commonality with the church today and how this encounter brings hope for everyone who may think they are beyond the touch of God. Part one of two from John 4. Thank you for listening to our podcast and we would love for you to subscribe to our page and share with others. Gospel Sermon on: John 4 : 1 - 42 1 Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John 2 (though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples), 3 He left Judea and departed again to Galilee. 4 But He needed to go through Samaria. 5 So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. 7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink." 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, "Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water." 11 The woman said to Him, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? 12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?" 13 Jesus answered and said to her, "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life." 15 The woman said to Him, "Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw." 16 Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here." 17 The woman answered and said, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You have well said, "I have no husband,' 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly." 19 The woman said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship." 21 Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." 25 The woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (who is called Christ). "When He comes, He will tell us all things." 26 Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am He." 27 And at this point His disciples came, and they marveled that He talked with a woman; yet no one said, "What do You seek?" or, "Why are You talking with her?" 28 The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, 29 "Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?" 30 Then they went out of the city and came to Him. 31 In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, "Rabbi, eat." 32 But He said to them, "I have food to eat of which you do not know." 33 Therefore the disciples said to one another, "Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?" 34 Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work. 35 Do you not say, "There are still four months and then comes the harvest'? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! 36 And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. 37 For in this the saying is true: "One sows and another reaps.' Glory be to God forever.
Pastor Jim Stockdale unpacks the powerful story of the Samaritan woman at the well and reveals how Jesus intentionally seeks individuals, meeting them exactly where they are. This encounter in John 4 highlights a transformation—from a woman burdened by her past to the first evangelist in Scripture. Key Takeaways from this Powerful Encounter: • Jesus meets people where they are, no matter their past • The living water in the Bible represents spiritual fulfillment • Knowing about Jesus (saber) is different from truly knowing Him • The Samaritan woman addressed Jesus as Lord before anyone else • Her transformation led her to share the gospel boldly This is more than a story—it's a call to move beyond just knowing about Jesus to truly experiencing His presence in daily life. Whether in moments of triumph or struggle, He offers a relationship that fully satisfies the deepest thirst. It's a good story if you don't know anything about the context. It is a great story if you do! For all the Samaritan Women around and within us, may we we be "weak" like Jesus to bring healing where it is needed most.

Today we see not only the love of Jesus displayed for "the other," "the outcast" and "the worst sinner." We see His love, kindness, and dignity. We also explore the concept of living water and what this means for our daily loves. Have we received and living in the gift of God, talked about in this passage? A question we tackle, and is important for our day and age, is: Are Churches about power and recognition or about being servants of Christ and His Church? We are delighted to have Pastor Hopson Boutot on the podcast for this episode on worship. We seek to discuss and grow together around the listed questions. Who is the God of Worship? What is the ultimate goal of Christian worship What are things you think about when planning worship? What was Jesus going after in John 4 with the Samaritan Women at the well? How important is personal worship in the life of a believer? What Scriptural drivers can also help strengthen us in corporate worship? Why is family worship a challenge for families? What other spiritual disciplines could serve the believer in worship? Most influential book on worship you have read?
Just like the Samaritan woman, you may feel overwhelmed by the weight of your sin. And just like her, while you might think that Jesus is holding your past over you he is tenderly saying that even this will not keep him from holding you. He is saying “I know everything you have ever done. I have seen you at your worst. And I am not leaving.” Why did Jesus have to pass through Samaria? Because his beloved was on the other side. Jesus went to Samaria so that this woman would meet him and proclaim he is the Messiah. And this would begin the wildfire spreading of this gospel that eventually made its way to this time and place to reach you and me. Sermon Notes: https://www.bible.com/events/4885568722.03.13
Maryland got an “F” grade from a national nonprofit for its efforts to protect children from being trafficked for sex. Amanda Rodriguez, of the state's Human Trafficking Task Force, says what's missing is state law that treats trafficked kids as victims, not criminals. Then we ask Jeanne Allert, who founded ‘The Samaritan Women' to support trafficked women with shelter, counseling, education, and job training … why the non-profit has changed focus and moved from Baltimore: “We became aware of how big the problem is nationally and so it became a shift to take what we've been given and what we've learned and share that with others, so they could reach into areas and to survivors that we would not be able to reach.” A project she's coaching is Harriett's House on the Eastern Shore -- we talk with its founder, Julie Cain. Culture and Society tell us we can find satisfaction for our soul's deepest longings through earthly means, but they fail to deliver every time. Jesus offers a different path. In His encounter with the Samaritan Women, Jesus says if we come to Him and drink from the well of living water that only He offers, we will never thirst again. In Jesus we find satisfaction for our longings to be loved, seen, accepted, chosen, and free. Once we have tasted this living water of God, no other source satisfies us the way Jesus does.
