Aaron Hartman is a writer, musician and podcaster based in Portland, Oregon. He is a founding member and bass player of Northwest indie legends Old Time Relijun, electro dance-rock pioneers IQU and releases music under the moniker Marine Layer. His newest endeavor, La Jolla Babylon-The Making Of A Suburban Punk, (out 10.18 via Ruinous Media) is a poignant and hilarious podcast where Aaron shares stories about his stormy youth growing up punk in a conservative beach town with his Millennial sister, actor, writer and comedian Katie Hartman. In this episode, Joe and Aaron get to the bottom of their first meeting and how Olympia's music scene's eventual acceptance of Joe led to the two playing together in the Replikants. Aaron shares how the struggle to publish his fictionalized memoir led to his new podcast, why he asked his sister Katie to join him and why it's a platform for he and Katie to celebrate their closeness and rapport. The two quip about changing the narrative with their longtime friend Sara Lund and Aaron shares an outrageous story about sperm donation and how his older sister wrote a play inspired by the experience. Happy (American) Thanksgiving to all TM pod listeners! I'm delighted to say TM pod ep. 66 marks the first ever podcast appearance, here or anywhere else, of musician, friend, founding Unwound member Brandt Sandeno! Brandt and I talk about his musical origin story beginning as a teen at Tumwater High School with his (pre-Unwound) Giant Henry bandmates Justin Trosper and Vern Rumsey. He describes how as a passionate guitarist, he was the band's drummer out of necessity and was happy to turn over the throne to Sara Lund not long after G.H.'s name change. Brandt went on to play keyboards with Unwound and would throughout the years frequently collaborate with Justin in other projects such as Survival Knife, The Young Ginns, Replikants among others. He shares a ton of great stories and paints a vivid picture of the influential Olympia music scene of the 80's and 90's from his perspective as a local kid growing up in that fertile place and time. The two of us also get into some funny tales of our time as co-workers at K Records and in the halls of power at the Washington State capitol. Hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did making it. Thank you for listening! Every Album Ever with Mike Mansour & Alex Volz

This week we're discussing every album by Unwound. Formed in Olympia, Washington by Justin Trosper and the late Vern Rumsey, Unwound really came together after drummer Sara Lund joined the group. Although they began as a fairly straightforward post-hardcore band, their musical evolution was profound. By their final album, they were an intense and brilliant post rock band. Born and raised in Indiana, Sara Lund started drumming at age 11 and playing in bands shortly thereafter. As a teenager she moved to Olympia, Washington and was soon known as one of the “heaviest drummers in town.” She toured and recorded with the rock band Unwound throughout the ’90s and early ’00s, long before women were a staple in rock bands. Sara now lives in Portland, OR and plays in the Corin Tucker Band, Hungry Ghost and the Secret Drum Band. She’s also a drum teacher, reading assistant and the mother of Niko, age 8. In this episode we discuss watching Shelia E open for Prince, being a tomboy outside of the Riot Grrl scene, the challenges of co-parenting with another touring musician and Sara’s love of music and motherhood.
