Send us a textOn nearly every previous episode of You, Me and An Album, Al has invited a guest to introduce him to one album he doesn't know well (or at all), but this week's guest talks about seven of his favorite albums. Mike Montgomery, who owns Candyland Recording Studio in Dayton, Kentucky, and is a member of R.Ring and Ampline, suggested 11 possible albums to discuss on this episode, but he and Al weren't able to narrow the list down. So Mike talks about seven of those albums (noted in the rundown below). Not only were they unable to settle on one album from Mike's list, but Mike also suggested that Al introduce him to some of his favorite albums. From Al's short list of eight albums, he decided to discuss three of them on this episode, bringing the total albums featured up to an even 10.Mike explains how his love of skateboarding led him down a musical rabbit hole that ultimately brought him to several of the albums on his list. Al talks about his tendency to immerse himself in a single artist's discography, and how that led him to discover several of the albums that made his short list.Mike also discusses his Nervous Verbs solo project and the debut Nervous Verbs album Pony Coughing, which will be out on February 28. He explains why he decided to not record his Nervous Verbs songs with his other bands and talks about some of the musicians he collaborated with for this project. There are several places to keep up with Mike and his bands on Instagram, and they're all worth a follow!@candyland_recording_studio@nervousverbs@r.ringsings@amplinegramAl is on Bluesky at @almelchior.bsky.social. This is a document of their initial sessions.” DIMtZUM’s “The Mauve Sessions” is a somatickally performed-yet-transcontinental audiosigil created by Frater Perseus and Revel Rosz. Fight the worship of generative AI & flippant social media depersonalization by HAUNTING the somatick with true works of individual art from anarchic artists. ABOUT DIMtZUM: The creation and whirlwind magicks utilized to conjure a surprise and powerful record, whilst in the midst of piecing outing my song sigil series, is a fantastick example of the hauntsigil, personally, but hypersigil, commonly, in turn. My Hauntomancy within DIMtZUM is best exemplified by the communion of the Spectre of my youth—one doused in the desert heat and cradled within the fuzz gospel of bands such as The Melvins, Unwound, Fugazi—and one that I have always cherished, yet, never knew how to conjure those deep influences until this project arose. The Aspectre was also danced with, as I found myself white-eyed and ravenous to experiment with my own talismanic instruments in ways hitherto unknown, inspired by the cosmick rhythms of Frater Perseus somatickally performed in his own magickal artspace called The Mauve Room, and allowed me to tether his conjurations from my Dimming Room: A rather analog & somatick affair considering we were transcontinental in collaboration, but one that kept the dirty ghost within a baritone fuzz gospel based upon performance rather than post-production. Without disrespectfully constituting Frater Perseus' own utilization of Hauntomancy within this sigil, or discussing his own praxis without his explicit description, I will say a marked element of Hauntomancy I noticed with Perseus' construction of the DIMtZUM rhythms was that of letting go of long charged and utilized syncopations. He almost retired these long toiled with rhythms to haunt on within these DIMtZUM songs; an exorcism of what was through true communion. He has told me that a lot of these rhythms, although created long ago but never utilized, nor found an appropriate home, can now find their unfinished business somewhat fulfilled upon this DIMtZUM HauntSigil. A fantastic example of Hauntomancy at play as the praxis was both a reverent dirge to what was as well as an ecstatic road-opening to forthcoming, newfangled experimentations. Here is the full mastered 6 song album I created with Frater Perseus for the DIMtZUM project and a full visualizer! The album will be released via bandcamp and youtube at 6am on 8/4/24. We chose this release date and time due to celestial elections, and hope our navigation proves fruitful. The visualizer uses drone footage from Logan Ford that we shot at and around his property of DIRT HAWK RANCH, NM. I also added my analog tape glitch for fun effect. But this is more about the musick than anything else… Also, here’s the sigil for the projekt. We mixed the Arabic word for “dim”, the Hebrew word for “tsom/tsum” (the root of TZUM), my custom WtH font, the therefore symbol, all into a DIM MAUVE CACTUS: Musick this episode courtesy of DIM ∴ TZUM: Photography by Logan Ford. Start with Ken and Rob's idea to use their formula of record reissues to move away from their previous unilateral focus of Disco, Soul, and Gospel of the 60s and 70s as they found trust among artist scenes that left them inspired in their youth. Stay through stories about the decades-long chase of working with records they believed a new generation of fans was ready to discover. So good to have Pete back on the pod. This episode Pete Chramiec and I stretch the very definition of what a podcast can be. For instance, together we prove that a podcast CAN consist of two late-middle age men looking through some old stickers and flyers in real time. We also demonstrate that if you space out a guest's appearances it really doesn't matter if we tell the same stories we've already talked about. Podcasting is a very intimate medium, I hope my voice feels like the voice of a friend even if we've never met. One thing I know about friendships, especially long term friendships: we tell and listen to the same stories a lot. So consider this episode a relaxed chill sesh with your friends Jason and Pete. We do cover some new territory: we talk about the Unwound shows we recently caught, Pete tells us about the last couple Verbal Assault tours they did and I talk about the power of mindfulness when dealing with mood disorders. It's a cool episode and I'm proud of it, so there! Episode 69 (...grow up) is a conversation with low-end god and Oly punk legend, Jared Warren. Jared has kept it heavy since high school where he met his KARP bandmates, the late Scott Jernigan and guitarist Chris Smith. From those beginnings he has gone on to front and play in several legendary combos, The Tight Bros From Way Back When, The Whip, and his current and most enduring job fronting and playing bass in his Big Business , his mega-duo with drummer Cody Willis. Big Business joined forces for many years with The Melvins and did the seemingly impossible: made the legends of heavy even heavier. Today he is looking forward to playing bass on the upcoming Unwound tour where he will stand in the spot where the late Vern Rumsey once stood. Jared tell us about his relationship with him, one that stretches back even before high school when he first met 'The Straw Haired Boy' at their mom's Tupperware party as children. CONTENT WARNING: We also share some darkly funny stories of our time working together in Olympia with a developmentally disabled population some of whom were formerly institutionalized sex offenders. We don't get into anything graphic but thought I should still mention it. We also share even more harrowing stories of the time we started doing stand-up comedy in Seattle in the very late 90's/ early 2000's. Happy (American) Thanksgiving to all TM pod listeners! I'm delighted to say TM pod ep. 66 marks the first ever podcast appearance, here or anywhere else, of musician, friend, founding Unwound member Brandt Sandeno! Brandt and I talk about his musical origin story beginning as a teen at Tumwater High School with his (pre-Unwound) Giant Henry bandmates Justin Trosper and Vern Rumsey. He describes how as a passionate guitarist, he was the band's drummer out of necessity and was happy to turn over the throne to Sara Lund not long after G.H.'s name change. Brandt went on to play keyboards with Unwound and would throughout the years frequently collaborate with Justin in other projects such as Survival Knife, The Young Ginns, Replikants among others. He shares a ton of great stories and paints a vivid picture of the influential Olympia music scene of the 80's and 90's from his perspective as a local kid growing up in that fertile place and time. The two of us also get into some funny tales of our time as co-workers at K Records and in the halls of power at the Washington State capitol. Hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did making it. Thank you for listening!
