Philip Clark is a son, a brother, a husband, a vinyl collector, and a music lover. He has hosted a radio show and a podcast, and has been a vocalist for B.A.T.S., The Dead Laughter, and Johnny Switchblade. He was also kind enough to be my guest for Episode No. 125 of Badass Records. Philip and I covered a decent amount of ground in just under two hours, and a good portion of that was centered on discussing a few of his favorite albums. Those were these:Kind of Blue (1959), Miles DavisShawn Phillips' Collaboration (1970)Station to Station (1976), David BowiePatti Smith's Radio Ethiopia (1976)Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables (1980), Dead KennedysMisfits' Walk Among Us (1982)Doolittle (1989), PixiesDanzig's Danzig II: Lucifuge (1990)Let Love In (1994), Nick Cave & the Bad SeedsModest Mouse's The Lonesome Crowded West (1997)In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (1998), Neutral Milk HotelNine Inch Nails' The Fragile (1999)The Decline (1999), NOFXSongs: Ohia's The Lioness (2000)Something About My 20s (2016), Four Arm Shiver Chatting with Philip was a lovely time, and -- once you've checked out our conversation -- you should ready yourself to see him perform reunion-style, live with Johnny Switchblade as part of the 3rd Annual Darryl Memorial, Saturday, July 13th, at Farewell (6515 Stadium Drive in Kansas City). There are three other acts on the bill. Doors at 7:00; music at 8:00. Thank you to Philip and to all of those that support the podcast. "Neutral Milk Hotel's second and final album, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (1998), is an indie rock cult classic, a weird and wonderful journey through the mind of a reclusive genius, and an album that's as provocative as it is intriguing. Sonically it's rough and unpolished; lyrically it's largely impenetrable and often unsettling. Ultimately, this is a fascinating and important piece of art and one that's deserving of all the attention it's received in the past quarter century." - Matthew Thank you so much for listening to this episode of the Album Files! "Before the Taylor Swift and Kanye West collabs, Bon Iver's debut album is an insular, inward-looking reflection on its frontman Justin Vernon, originally intended as a demo before going on to sell in its hundreds of thousands and birthing a new generation of singer-songwriter. It's a fascinating record not just because of what it says but what it doesn't - and the considerable mythology behind it." -Iain Thank you so much for listening to this episode of the Album Files! Today we have a very special treat for you guys. We had the opportunity to talk to CB Stockfleth, the director of The Elephant 6 Recording Company, the most highly anticipated music documentary by any indie music lover of the 90s and on. He shares with us the origin story of the documentary--from Robert Schneider believing in him to tell their story, to being brought in to the inner circle of the collective, to meeting the man/myth Jeff Mangum. Consider this a little preview into some long awaited stories from some pretty reclusive musicians (from Neutral Milk Hotel, The Olivia Tremor Control, The Apples in Stereo, and more!) that you'll find in The Elephant 6 Recording Company, IN SELECT THEATRES RIGHT NOW (see if it's playing near you here: https://www.elephant6movie.com/) AND STREAMING TO APPLE AND AMAZON PRIME SEPTEMBER 2nd!!!!!!Links:The Elephant 6 Recording Company trailer: https://youtu.be/PCzXf5ZiE3k?si=WWRJZNmSyBt3jKwT"In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" clip: https://youtu.be/cWElzqll2Ls?si=fBU-Mjq3bDZ3-9sfgroup outside LA screening singing "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea together: https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cv1d8mOx5sG/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==Expert explains Green Typewriter section of album: https://www.reddit.com/r/OliviaTremorControl/comments/f151x8/green_typewriters_meaning/OUR DISCORD: https://discord.gg/2stA2P7pTC Flyover State Hotline - 1 608 HIT-NERD (608-448-6373)https://www.youtube.com/flyoverstatepark EVERYTHING ELSE: https://linktr.ee/FlyoverStatePark --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/albumconcepthour/support
Yo!This was one for the ages.Having being fortunate enough to be invited up to Sk8bar in St. Joe, I gladly accepted and -- while there -- was able to connect with Danny "Dr. 47" Phillips to record Episode # 75 of Badass Records podcast.Such a challenge. So much fun. So worth it.Seriously.I didn't know how I would attempt to make myself comfortable in someone else's space. I didn't know if I'd know how to set up all of the gear once I'd taken it apart for the first time, and I didn't know how I'd do (at all) attempting to conduct an interview beneath all of those details. But, alas...the stress and the anxiety were completely unwarranted.Brandon and Jesse welcomed me into their home away from home, and Danny was a gracious host/guest.He was every bit of (unsolicited) awesome as advertised, and was quick to quell the worries of my brain that a booker/promoter for a live-music venue would feel too busy to be participating in an interview for a podcast. And, the chat was -- in my mind -- perfect. We talked a little bit about the ol' life thing. The work thing. The...just...you know...doin' it thing. And of course we talked about a few of Danny's favorite records. He gave me a substantial list, and -- for shits and giggles -- I broke it in half. Here's what that looked like:List A:Sticky Fingers (1971), The Rolling StonesFleetwood Mac's Rumours (1977)Outlandos d'Amour (1978), The PoliceThe Lemonheads's It's a Shame About Ray (1992)Siamese Dream (1993), Smashing PumpkinsNirvana's In Utero (1993)A.M. (1995), WilcoList B:At Folsom Prison (1968), Johnny CashBig Star's #1 Record (1972)My Aim Is True (1977), Elvis CostelloThe Ramones's Rocket to Russia (1977)Last Splash (1993), The BreedersBad Religion's Stranger Than Fiction (1994)In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (1998), Neutral Milk HotelIf you want to get a hold of Danny for band-booking purposes, here are what I believe to be the best ways:1) Contact Sk8bar -- either via the landline (after 5:00 p.m. Central) at 816-689-0507 or via Facebook.2) Holler at Danny either via his Instagram or his Facebook page.3) You can also find him on Twitter, if you please, but, I digress...My chat with Dr. 47 was fantastic. Please consider giving it a view or a listen. Please check out Sk8bar, and please check out the Merch' store on the podcast's Web site. Even a sticker purchase helps.Anyhoo...as Jamal a.k.a. Jamel says, "Be kind, be good to each other, and help keep great music alive."At least that's what I think he says. Thanks for stopping by.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the promo or the intro/outro audio. As part of our 25th anniversary album series, Silver Liner Notes, we look at the legacy of Neutral Milk Hotel's seminal indie rock album, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. To discuss its legacy, we're joined by Lance Bangs and Rob Hatch-Miller, producer and executive producer of the documentary "The Elephant 6 Recording Co." about the collective from which the band emerged. Bangs was also a friend of the band and recorded a live album for them in 1997, which is included in the new box set, The Collected Works of Neutral Milk Hotel, out February 24.

Few things get Matt more excited than concept records and jarring indie music. Put the two together and you have In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, Neutral Milk Hotel's classic that's beloved, hated on, called overrated, and beloved again in regular cycles. Anais Mitchell and Hurray for the Riff Raff aren't as, well, batshit as NMH, but their albums Hadestown and The Navigator, respectively, are historical and mythological records much like In the Aeroplane. Listen to see which allegories Tim likes best.

We're doing something a little different today. Since we had to shuffle some things around, we couldn't record an episode so we decided to show you what our livestream “The Island” was like in it's place. Every other week, Nate, Reis, and Brad go back to the island to listen to a new location based playlist with a new genre every week. This episode is a real nostalgia-fest, as Brad tries to create the perfect Indie playlist for close personal friend Haptic GG (Dustin Booher from the Hellogoodbye ep) using 2000s Indie Rock as a template. It's not always exactly Indie... and it's not always rock... but Indie was a pretty loose term in the 2000s and Brad & Dustin reveled in it when it was burgeoning on myspace pages across the nation. In this weeks episode, Matthew and Anton discuss the odd but innovative album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel. Although it sounds very odd and is very different from what the 90s era brought, the album is considered to be one of the best albums to be produced in the 90s. However, for the Lover Boys, they had a hard time figuring out why that is. Fantasy baseball analyst and podcaster Michael Govier comes aboard this week to share his love for Built to Spill's 1999 album, Keep It Like a Secret. Michael and Al talked about Michael's various podcasts, how his love for listening to and playing music has grown and waned and grown again over the years, and how he came to be a fan of this Boise-based band and this particular album.Note: Michael and Al discussed the lyrics to Broken Chairs but did not mention that they were not written by Doug Martsch, but by the poet Uhuru Black. According Genius.com, Black was a friend of members of Built to Spill, and had no relation to the reggae band, Black Uhuru.Another note: Al mentioned that he has been taking drum lessons via Zoom from Sara Lund, who was the drummer for Unwound and several other bands. The NFT has since been taken down but the Song: The Killers (feat Bruce Springsteen) - DustlandGreg brings us our album of the week and it is a hell of a ride! Zappa '88: The Last U.S. Show is a marvelous performance, spanning 2 discs (4 vinyl albums) & was released June 18th by the Zappa estate. If you appreciate incredible musicianship, you should really really check this album out…for real!Songs: Frank Zappa - The Black Page (New Age Version, Live at Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY 3/25/88)Frank Zappa - Stairway To Heaven (Live at Towson Center, Towson, MD 3/23/88)For our ninety-eighth episode, Jay brings us the music of 1998. It wasn't the most prolific year, things are winding down for the decade and the genres and trends are bending yet again. Some early 90s bands release albums that could be categorized as ‘meh' (Pearl Jam Yield, Smashing Pumpkins Adore); Kid Rock & Godsmack unfortunately release debut albums. Nick's favorite Neutral Milk Hotel In the Aeroplane Over the Sea was released, which he insists is enough to salvage the year. Lastly, Jay's idol Eric Clapton released Pilgram, his long awaited album of new original songs & Jay considers it one of his most disappointing first listens of his life…so, not the best year….but we find some silver linings… specifically this video of an early Rage Against the Machine gig, which wasn't from 1998 (enjoy!).Song: Dave Matthews Band - Crush
SUPPORT MUSIC IS NOT A GENRE ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE I love the whole idea of a music collective. It's pretty much how musicians work anyway. We all bounce between projects and help out each other. We all influence and inspire each other. But very few musicians have had the guts to create an actual collective, and of those, Elephant 6 was by far the most innovative, successful & influential. They were founded in the late 1980s, but really took hold in the 1990s and early 2000s. E6 (which no one calls it) spawned well over 30 bands, of which at least four – The Apples in Stereo, The Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, and of Montreal – have had notable success and influence, especially on bands like Franz Ferdinand, Arcade Fire & Tame Impala. I'd argue they've done more to shape the indie scene of this entire young century than any other music. With so many bands, their sound is naturally all over the map. But their core elements stem mostly from the mod/psychedelic/chamber rock/pop of the mid to late 1960s. Think middle period Beatles, Pet Sounds &Smile, the Zombies. Mix that with ‘90s indie rock, alt pop & some synths, and you get … something really weird and really catchy. Also really weird. And very easy to listen to. And weird. If you don't know any of this music, start with the Olivia Tremor Control. No single E6 band represents their whole aesthetic, but Olivia Tremor Control comes closest. I was disappointed when they disbanded too soon, and sad when Bill Doss, their main driving force (and also the founder of the Sunshine Fix), died so young. Hit up their “singles and beyond” collection, and you'll be instantly drawn in. Then move on to the Apples in Stereo. To me they created the most complete and most accessible amalgamation of all of the above styles. They also released way more music and had probably the most hit singles. I don't know as much about of Montreal, except that they are the more ambient & synth-y incarnation of the Elephant 6 sound, and the most modern sounding. They've also lasted the longest & released the most music, which has been much more ubiquitous than any of the other bands' music. As for Neutral Milk Hotel, I know next to nothing about them. I was happy to see their album, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, representing E6 on the Rolling Stone top 500. They had kind of a freak folk vibe. And if you listen to Arcade Fire or bands like that, you will hear a huge influence. Speaking of … So much of music creation is about “permission” and “implant”. An artist comes out who does something unorthodox or otherwise out of place, and a part of the creative mind says, “You're allowed to do that?!?” Those new or newly contextualized ideas get implanted, and influence what comes next. A whole lot of my work has been tinged with indie/mod/psychedelic/synth/alt pop – released and unreleased. (Latter case in point: https://soundcloud.com/recarea/3-sample.) Here are two recently released examples, one more mod/retro/synth & the other more indie/psychedelic: REC – “Sparkle Shine Shine” (from the album, The Sunshine Seminar) REC – “The Accumulate” (from the album, Symphony for the Weird) Have you heard any of this music? Have you even heard of the collective or any of these bands? Are there other Elephant 6 bands you prefer? In this episode, I talk about Joachim Trier's 2011 film "Oslo August 31st." It follows Anders, a young man just out of rehab for heroin addiction, as he walks around the city of Oslo, meeting old friends and trying to decide if life is worth living. I think this is a powerful and unforgettable film that reminds us of the beauty of being alive. It's one of my favorite films from the 2010s, and I urge you to watch it if you haven't seen it yet. There are major spoilers in this episode. I also talk about suicide and mental illness.Consider making this podcast sustainable by supporting it on Patreon.Subscribe to the Her Head in Films Newsletter.Follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram.Original logo by Dhiyanah Hassan Full Show Notes:If I Were a Carpenter (tribute album)The CranberriesSonic Youth - "Superstar"The Cranberries - "They Long to Be (Close to You)"The Cranberries - "Dying in the Sun"Ruth L. In 2016 some group calling themselves Skankral Ska Hotel released an all ska version of Neutral Milk Hotel’s indie opus In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Interesting concept, terrible execution—deliberately so—with ska being the punchline. But imagine if a band made an all ska version of a classic album, but did it well. This is exactly what Jeff Rosenstock did. And the brilliant album he turned into ska, was his own, the critically acclaimed 2020 release NO DREAM. He called the album SKA DREAM and presented it potentially as an April Fool’s joke, with absurd ska pun titles and 2 Tone dancing figures pasted on the original NO DREAM album cover. But SKA DREAM was real—a reverse Skankral Ska Hotel, an amazing bittersweet ska album, with clever structural choices and layers of instrumentation, the product of copious guest performances and quarantine style recordings. Everyone involved emanates so much joy, which clashes—in the best way possible—with Rosenstock’s depressing NO DREAM lyrics. And every bit of humor on the record is done with love towards ska, not making fun of the genre. Jeff Rosenstock is our guest on today’s episode of In Defense of Ska. We spend some time dissecting SKA DREAM. But we also talk about what it’s been like for him to sneak in the back door of hipster indie rock cred, and why credible journalists like to ask him about his 1:30 minute-long ska song “Rainbow.” We also get the full scoop on Jeff’s greatest side project of all time: Shitfinger. Today we have perhaps the greatest (and possibly only) indie-lofi-folk-punk all star team up of all time (change my mind). To start off we have Neutral Milk Hotel frontman Jeff Mangum singing so simple and sweet... followed by fellow Neutral Milk alum, and master of the musical saw, Julian Koster, and their producer from "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea", and inventor of the non-Pythagorean pitch scale, Robert Schneider. The last had nothing to do with Neutral Milk, but was important to indie folk at the time: Kevin Barnes from a little band called Of Montreal. They were all part of the Elephant 6 Collective, an indie record label that produced much of the indie-lofi-folk-punk from the 90s to 00s. In 2001, after the unexpected success of "In the Aeroplane...", Mangum and the gang decided to take a step back from conventional songwriting, and create something truly conceptual & out there, and very psychedelic. It was a soundtrack for a movie that didn't yet exist. And the movie was a trip. With the short film of the album release in 2008, you gleaned some context, but overall, for both iterations there's a lot to unpack. I definitely recommend watching the short film in the description if at any point you are lost with what we're saying... Kary Wayson is a poet based in Seattle, WA. The poems Kary’s latest collection, The Slip, are wonderfully slippery in both form and feeling, in a way that demands attention and rewards deep engagement. In our conversation we discussed what a poem can do, how we approach “meaning” in poetry, and how life changes affect our art. Then in the second segment, we talked about time and our human perception of duration. (Conversation recorded January 5, 2021.) David Adjmi is a writer and playwright based in Los Angeles, CA. In his new memoir Lot Six, David tells the story of how he found himself through art and the theater, growing up feeling like an outsider as a gay, atheist, artistic youth in a small and insular Syrian Sephardic Jewish community in Brooklyn. In our conversation, David and I discussed the craft of memoir, the process of constructing one’s own identity, and why his book isn’t structured like the typical gay narrative. Then in the second segment, we discussed how the pandemic is affecting our ability to make narratives, and how art can function as a community. (Conversation recorded August 31, 2019.) Translator and Words Without Borders co-founder Samantha Schnee joined Chad and Brian this week to talk about Anna's "opium-fueled" fairy tale that was referenced in passing in Anna Karenina, and a centerpiece of Boullosa's "sequel." A lively conversation about language, various Tolstoy translations, the book's origin, ways to interpret the fairy tale, and much more. This week's musical Anna reference comes from Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea." And again, if you want to help pick from the four finalists for season 13 (Zone, Vernon Subutex, Ada, or Ardor, Baron Wenckheim's Homecoming), fill out this survey. Thanks in advance! When "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" was released in February 1998, many critics didn't know what to think of it. Was it a fully formed lo-fi genre-breaking Mangum Opus--or an ill conceived indie-rock mess of conflicting sounds? Were Jeff Mangum's lyrics, involving anything from holocaust scenes to raw sexuality, evocative and mysterious and deeply personal--or just the weird, demented, and pretentious ravings of a hipster? However you feel about it, "Aeroplane" is a cult classic among lovers of both lo-fi and indie music. It appeared right as the internet was hitting puberty, and with it, the explosion of indie music that followed. Neutral Milk Hotel influenced several indie powerhouses from the myspace days, including Bright Eyes, mewithoutYou, Beirut, and The Decemberists, which then influenced countless others. The underground success made Mangum stuff of legend, and under the immense weight of "Aeroplane"s influence, Neutral Milk collapsed. Mangum stopped making public appearances for a few years, and the fans were left in wonder if that magic in a bottle would ever come out again. They did release the "Ferris Wheel on Fire" EP in 2011, but it was composed of material written before "Aeroplane," so it's not necessarily a progression forward. Mangum has no intention of continuing music under Neutral Milk Hotel, as "[his] path feels sort of different now." With the ethereal lyrics and moments that give you unexpected goosebumps, it's hard to understand why it gets under your skin, but it does. As Mangum told Pitchfork, "...these windows open up for something to be honest, and they don't stay open for very long." It's the end of the week of Pink Floyd, and we've covered the entirety of "The Wall." We've listened to it be built, brick by brick, and we've listened to it crumble. But now we come to how the concept of "The Wall" came to be in the first place. Sure, we've talked about the major themes and how Pink, the character, is an amalgamation of both Roger Waters and Syd Barrett's lives, but what about Pink... Floyd? How did they build the wall between each other--culminating in decades of bad blood (Waters on one side, and David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright on the other)? The answer for that lies somewhere in the creation of "Animals." At this point in their lives, Mason & Wright had already started families and Gilmour & Waters had just had their first kids. Most of the members of the band were for the first time distracted by their personal lives, Gilmour being uncharacteristically absent from the songwriting, with the exception of "Dogs," which he co-wrote. However, Waters did not want to slow down. He took the lead on this project and it was then that "The Division Bell" started to ring, as he started resenting the other members' contribution to the writing. Brick by brick, through arguments about royalty divisions and being unsupportive of other members' attempts at creative contributions, Waters started building his wall. By the end of the recording process, Wright was not even given a writing credit, due to Water's insistence that he wasn't contributing enough. Though, however fraught with creative conflicts, Pink Floyd managed to bring it together for a beautiful album in "Animals." Diving into a critique of capitalism, which is a contrast to the critique of bolshevism in the book "Animal Farm," Waters really gets into the divisions within capitalist society. Whether you are a dog or a sheep, the pigs on the wing are the ones running the show. Join Brad LeBaron, Jon Acker, David Gallagher, and special guest & Dave's good friend (and fellow beer connoisseur) Moses Wolfenstein, as we break down, what each animal represents and what it means for society. The wall has been built. Pink has the isolation he's been building toward his whole life. In his isolation, his hatred and fear of humanity continues to grow, and his delusional self becomes a musical Hitler of sorts, even calling for a "final solution" to deal with all those that are different than him. But even Pink eventually grows tired of his Hitler alter ego and starts to turn his accusations inward, and a trial ensues... In the second half of "The Wall," we follow his descent into madness (madness??) as he finally faces his worst fear: himself. With some of the most dynamic musical numbers in Pink Floyd history, from your standard 80s synth to roaring Gilmour solos to Disney-esque musical numbers, this album has everything. Whether you enjoy it or not, "The Wall" has become a cultural reference point for all concept albums and rock operas since. Ironically, the weight of "The Wall" was too much for the band itself to handle. As the wall came down in the album, walls were being put up between bandmates, and by "The Final Cut" they were fully built. But for now, join us outside the wall, as Brad LeBaron, David Gallagher, Jon Acker, Scott Westley, and returning guest Jake "the Snake" Foster (host of "Under the Covers") face the madness (1:42:55) together...
