Nuovi singoli per Mark Pritchard & Thom Yorke, These New Puritans feat. Caroline Polachek e billy woods.
Ahora, rodeada de productores que reflejan su evolución artística y su nuevo estatus —Danny L Harle, A. G. This is one of the best bits from Take 5.Caroline Polachek had a huge 2023, and at the end of it she joined Zan Rowe to Take 5. The energy of her most recent album Desire, I Want to Turn Into You had been replicated with a volcano at her live shows, so her theme was centred around explosive songs of release (i.e. 'volcano' songs). It wasn't the first time she'd done Take 5, but more than a decade had passed, so we caught up on her own musical evolution too.Pink Floyd – 'The Great Gig in the Sky'Listen to the full episode here: https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/take-5/double-j-take-5-zan-rowe-caroline-polachek/103233714
When the singer and composer Arooj Aftab released her 2021 album “Vulture Prince,” she gained fans like Barack Obama, Elvis Costello and Caroline Polachek. That album also earned her a Grammy for best global music performance. Now, Arooj is back with her fourth studio album, “Night Reign.” She joins Tom to tell us about her journey in music, her fascination with the night, and what it was like going viral before that was really a thing.
2024 is in it's final days and as is traditional it's time for us to talk aout all of the fantastic music released this year. This year Tracey & Colin have been on board with Charli XCX's Brat summer, while Ian has pretty much avoided it entirely while he's been rocking out to masked Hardcore bands with salsa rhythms. It's been another absolutely amazing year for music and it's been really difficult narrowing it down to 10 songs each. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Alkaline Trio, Ambiviolence, Arab Strap, Astrel K, Audiobaton, The Body & Dis Fig, The Bullfight & Henry Rollins, Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, Julie Christmas & Johannes Persson, Crippled Black Phoenix, The Cure, Exploring Birdsong, Bill Fisher, The Hanging Stars, The Hell, Hope Of The States, Horse Jumper Of Love, MJ Lenderman, LLNN, Magdalena Bay, Midwife, Mt. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

We're winding out 2024 with a beautiful Take 5. Jamie xx is one of my favourite producers, so it's really special to cap off what's been a big year, with the man himself. Looking back the last couple of years, the final Take 5 has been really reflective. Caroline Polachek was poetic at the end of a huge 2023, and he year before Jon Hopkins gifted us a transcendent set of songs. All three artists came to that conversation at the top of their game, but with a wisdom and calm that comes with age, with experience, and freedom. For Jamie, I asked him to choose songs of surrender. He embraced the theme and then some, and his songs confirmed why music is such a beautiful language for him. From vintage surf movies, to legendary Brazilian music, deep house cuts and Jonathan Richman, this is a beautiful meditation on life, and a life in sound.G. On this week's Talkhouse episode we've got a pair of talented musicians in a chummy chat about making songs and making a life while making songs. It's Melina Duterte, aka. Jay Som, and Pascal Stevenson, aka. Fashion Club. Stevenson just released the second Fashion Club album, A Love You Cannot Shake, but it's different enough than the first that it almost feels like a debut. That surely has something to do with the fact that it's the first Fashion Club music since Stevenson's gender transition; there's a genre freedom that wasn't as evident on the first one, which felt a bit closer to Stevenson's indie-leaning band Moaning. A Love You Cannot Shake clearly honors big pop music but it frequently swerves before giving into any obvious trappings. She found some fantastic guests to add to the sideways fun, too, including Talkhouse Podcast alumni Perfume Genius and Julie Byrne as well as the other half of today's conversation, Jay Som. Now Jay Som made a splash with her first couple of bedroom-pop albums in 2015 and 2016, and though she hasn't released a new album since 2019's fantastic Anak Ko, she's been busy nonetheless, both starting some new projects, producing for other musicians, and playing bass for the indie-rock supergroup Boygenius. She's been working on new material of her own as well, and she had a song on the soundtrack to the critically acclaimed movie I Saw the TV Glow alongside like-minded artists like Caroline Polachek and The Weather Station. And of course there's her contribution to the Fashion Club record, “Ghost.” Check out that song right here. In this lively conversation, Stevenson and Duterte chat about songwriting, including Stevenson's tendency to start with the biggest parts and Duterte's opinion on what constitutes a “treat” while you're producing. They tell each other toward the end of the conversation which pop star they'd most like to write for, and we learn that Stevenson's specialty is what she calls “fucked-up ballads.” Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 2:20 – Start of the chat 4:45 – On Fashion Club's album, A Love You Cannot Shake 9:20 – Melina loves Pascal's record 13:30 – Contrasting approaches to songwriting 16:36 – "Everyone's a little different when it comes to what I call 'treats'" 31:36 – "Do you think it's easier now to become a producer?" Come along as we visit the Bay Area and chat with Sam Hunt, Executive Vice President and Managing Executive at Wasserman Music. One of the youngest to ever win Pollstar's Agent of the Year in 2016, Sam oversees a powerhouse roster of electronica, indie, pop, and hip-hop artists including names like Diplo, Major Lazer, Flying Lotus, Jamie xx, Animal Collective, Run The Jewels, Big Boi, 100 gecs, Still Woozy, and Caroline Polachek. We learn what his day to day is like as an agent, where essentially his role is to do everything he can to improve and guide artist careers and provide opportunities and guidance - largely involving live performances and touring, but also brand deals, bigger picture projects, and concepts. Hear about some of the unique projects he's worked on and how interesting challenges often provide creative fulfillment. We learn about Sam's career journey, from working in record stores as a teen and in college, to working at a label and club in Chicago, to joining the upstart Windish Agency where he learned under Tom Windish who he still works with today. Sam drops some great advice for anyone wanting to be an agent or understand more of that side of the industry as well as insight into what makes a good agent and how to handle the highs and lows of artists you represent. My biggest gripe in recent years, is one of the worst ever eras of music critics, clamming so many mid-tier female solo pop/rnb & rap albums are masterpieces. Witness my most overrated album from last year, from Caroline Polachek. Or anything by Beyonce. So here we are with this years anointed album of the year. All I can say is that I am always fair.
John is joined by Alex Cook, better known as A. G. Cook, to talk about how he wrote, recorded and produced the album ‘Britpop'. A. G. Cook, is a London-based artist and producer. After studying at Goldsmiths University, he founded PC Music, a label shaping hyper pop with artists including Hannah Diamond and Danny L Harle. His debut solo albums, ‘7G' and ‘Apple', arrived in 2020. In addition to his own music, Alex has shared his production talents with numerous pop icons, including Jonsi, Madonna, and Caroline Polachek, and Charli XCX. In May 2024, he released his third studio album, ‘Britpop', a 24-song exploration blending pop, experimental electronics, and acoustic sounds. Catching up at Strongroom Studios, Alex guides us through the three distinct chapters of the album, digging into the production and song writing approaches he took to make them stand out. As well as sharing some intricate plugin demos, we hear stories of developing a harmonic style, meticulous automation and what it means to be an aggressive listener. You've heard of Problems Clown, but what if it was Problems Wife? La Dispute is here to answer that question for us with their album Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair! At the Primavera Sound festival this year Johann Wald and I were lucky enough to put together two titans of modern pop music, AG Cook and Sega Bodega, for an epic Line Noise conversation into the state of music, from hyperpop to Britpop, Caroline Polachek to Charli XCX. I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said this was one of my favourite Line Noises ever. So enjoy.
Julian, Madeline, and Emilio are joined by Lily Desmond of the band Sloppy Jane to venture into the midnight realm with a discussion on the new film "I Saw the TV Glow." The group dive into its portrayals of such themes as media obsession, personal identity crisis, and co-dependency, along with its abundance of music, aided by Lily's perspective on Sloppy Jane's presence in the film. They also discuss which experiences in their lives most closely resemble main character Owen's relationship with the Pink Opaque, and reminisce about the television shows with clear homages in the film, bookended by comparisons both apparent and "unlikely..." On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of friends who make sometimes challenging yet often incredibly catchy and tuneful music, one of whom you've seen and heard on Talkhouse several times before: Mac DeMarco and Kirin J. Callinan. DeMarco has been on the podcast before, and we keep inviting him both because we love his music and because he's a great conversationalist. For the music part, DeMarco has been making dizzyingly catchy songs since around 2012, when his confusingly titled debut, which is called 2, came out. But it's been part of his fun-loving persona to keep it light and a little bit silly, even as he's zapping you with catchy pop. Sometimes he ventures into soft-rock, other times he's vaguely psychedelic. For his latest album One Wayne G—and I'm not actually sure you can call it that—DeMarco assembled 199 songs that run almost nine hours. Songs might be a little strong a word to use for most of these tracks, which are often instrumental ideas more than fully fleshed out “songs”—he even says that on this podcast. Check out one of those ideas right here, whose title is simply the day it was recorded, “20190205.” Now Kirin J. Callinan's records are, like DeMarco's, often referred to as “provocative,” but these two guys push buttons in different ways. While his friend Mac gives off chill vibes onstage, Callinan likes a little bit of danger in performances. His records can be grandiosely pop-centric while his persona is… intense. He's often compared to either David Bowie or Nick Cave, and I think the truth is somewhere in between. He's played on a lot of other folks' records, including songs with DeMarco and appearances with Caroline Polachek and Mark Ronson, and he starred on the TV series Top of The Lake, so it's been a varied career to say the least. February 2 will see the release of Callinan's fantastic new album If I Could Sing. Check out the song “Young Drunk Driver.” You'll realize quickly that DeMarco and Callinan are old friends: They get right into talking about Callinan's recent dye-job and other chummy topics. Some are less fun, including the recent theft of Callinan's motorcycle—recent meaning he had just gotten off the phone with the police when this chat started. They also talk about the relative coolness of tennis versus golf, Callinan's new record, and potential future collaborations. You heard it here first. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Mac DeMarco and Kirin J. Callinan for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the great stuff at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!
