How does the New Testament church relate to the Old Testament? The mass assembly of the Israelites at Sinai (Exodus 19) was the first of its kind, and one that completely overwhelmed the senses of those who attended. Should the modern church look back at this event and try to learn from it? The writer of Hebrews believes that there are better realities to explore than those experiences of the ancient church which we need to tap into.
God is in the business of shaking things up and there is an even greater shake up to come. But, the good news is that He always moves and works for a purpose - to expose what is empty and worthless and to reveal what it is certain and unshakeable.

Living an unshakeable life - how our citizenship in the city of God enables us to live confidently in the chaos around us.
As we head towards a time of gathering again as God's people, we have all types of longings about meeting again. We have been doing so many things online during this strange season! All this raises questions of what exactly we are doing when we gather to do church. We're going to spend a few weeks considering what the Triune God is doing as he gathers his people every week. We will see that we are gathered for Jesus' glory, as one new humanity, as children of a heavenly father and as a special possession for declaring his honour and praise. May God give us a fresh vision for what he is doing among us before the great day when we will gather with all God's people for his glory alone.

The "Jesus Is Better" sermon series is focused on the central theme from the Book of Hebrews. In a world of uncertainty and at times when many do not have a sure footing on what they believe, the Book of Hebrews provides the strong foundation for our faith in Jesus. It reveals why Jesus is greater, more excellent, more perfect, everlasting...Better. Pt 22 :: Christ brings believers into an unshakable kingdom by His grace, through His gospel, and for His glory.
This week we are unpacking Connect with God. Connecting with God can not be about earthly consequences. God wants our hearts not our behaviors. All connecting with God goes through Jesus. That's why we say the we all need more Jesus.
Reminding the Hebrews that the glory of God they now experience is far greater than that of Mount Sinai though the physical presence might not be felt. The writer also warns and reminds his readers that with this great knowledge and intimacy with God comes a greater responsibility to remain in the faith and hold fast to Christ.
The New Covenant matters because you can now CONFIDENTLY approach God. Faith is confidence in the person of Jesus Christ and in his power, so that even when his power does not serve my end, my confidence in him remains because of who he is. —Ravi Zacharias The New Covenant matters because God INITIATED it and Jesus SECURES it The New Covenant matters because it will NEVER change
Pastor Robert teaching from Hebrews 12:18-29 and Luke 13:10-17

: Remember, the purpose of the book of Hebrews is to warn Jewish Christians against leaving Christianity in favor of their old Jewish religion. This passage warns of something far more fearful than what any human persecution can inflict…God’s judgment. Every person will be judged, either by the law (old covenant) or by grace (New covenant)…By one’s works or by Christ’s work on the cross…By provisions at Mount Sinai or by provisions at Mount Zion.

Because we approach God not in terror (like those at Sinai) but in awe, reverence, and freedom, we are able to pursue Christ in holiness and endurance. Our position with God is unshakeable through Christ. Therefore, we can be steadfast in our faith and obedience.

The writer of Hebrews testifies to us as believers, that since the New Covenant of grace was established on better promises by a perfect Savior, we, of all people, should “be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe” . Hebrews 12:28

While we must be aware of the things that try to steal our joy, the reason we can have joy in this world does not depend on what we do but on what Jesus has already done for us by overcoming sin and death. Worship reminds us of this, why is why true worship of our savior enables us to have joy even in the midst of earthly troubles.
Pastor Brian points out three aspects of acceptable worship so that we might offer it to God.

Brokenness can consume us. Our physical eyes fill us with stories that can weigh us down so much we're unable to move. Now it's not that bad all the time, but if we see what we think we see, the world is very sad, and very broken. But it is not forever. There exists another reality, a forever reality, one we cannot see with our physical eyes, filled with an eternal celebration meant for us, and though we cannot see it, it goes with us everywhere. We do not sojourn through this broken world alone, even if we are physically alone. We are citizens of heaven. That truth affects everything. How? Would you listen, and hear God's truth through Dr. Sams about what we are to do with this alternate reality we can belong to forever.

The writer of Hebrews encourages his readers to live in the reality of the New Covenant. God has made a new deal with humanity and the benefits that come with the new deal are far superior to every other time in history; and lead to an unimaginably wonderful end in heaven.

The book of Hebrews reminds us who we are as the Community of Christ. The author reminds the Christians then and us today that the old covenant was just a shadow of the truth and that the true substance of God's plan of salvation has come in the person of Jesus Christ. Over and over in the book of Hebrews we are told, Jesus is better.
