SUMMARYIn this first episode of Season 6, producer Andrew Whiteman invites listeners to step into an arena of collaboration between poetry and sound. We all know it when we hear it, and we have mixed feelings about it. Why does the archaic meeting place of music and poem hit such a nerve? Is this art form literature or is it music? Surely, it's not song, is it? And if poems already carry their prosodic intentions within themselves – why bother supplementing them with extraneous audio?" These questions are answered by Siren Recordings, a new digital-DIY sonic poetry label run by Kelly Baron and Andrew Whiteman.*SHOW NOTESAudio played in the episode“Happy Birthday Ed Sanders Thank You!”, written and performed by Edward Sanders ( from "This is the Age of Investigation Poetry and Every Citizen Must Investigate” part of the “Totally Corrupt Dial-a-Poem Series by John Giorno. There are now six in the race to replace Rachel Notley. Former Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi joined the race on Monday, confirming weeks of rumours. So how does this shake up the race, and how might each candidate bid to stand out in the weeks ahead? Host Kathleen Petty is joined by pollster and political analyst Janet Brown of Janet Brown Opinion Research, Keith McLaughlin, political strategist and former chief of staff to Notley government ministers, and Cheryl Oates, a former advisor to Rachel Notley and co-host of The Discourse podcast, to discuss what issues might define the race and what members are likely to prioritize in the weeks ahead.
In January 2024, Rachel Notley announced that she's stepping down as leader of the Alberta NDP. Notley, the daughter of former NDP leader Grant Notley, was elected to the Alberta Legislature in 2008, representing Edmonton – Strathcona. She won the provincial party leadership in October 2014 and subsequently served as premier of Alberta from 2015 - 2019 after the NDP won the 2015 provincial election. No matter who follows Notley, her resignation will leave a gaping hole in Alberta politics. The speaker will reflect on Notley's legacy in Alberta and speculate on where a new leader may take Alberta's NDP. Speaker: Trevor W. Harrison Trevor Harrison is a Professor Emeritus of sociology at the University of Lethbridge. He is also a former Director of the Parkland :Institute (2011 - 2021), an Alberta wide research organization, of which he is a founding member. He is best known for his studies in political sociology, political economy and public policy. Harrison is the author, co-author or co-editor of ten books, not including a self-published book of poetry, as well as numerous journal articles, chapters, and reports. He is a frequent contributor to public media, including radio and television.

Jamie Hartmann-Boyce and Nicola Lindson discuss emerging evidence in e-cigarette research interview Cara Murphy, Brown University, USA. Associate Professor Jamie Hartmann-Boyce and Dr Nicola Lindson discuss the new evidence in e-cigarette research and interview Assistant Professor Cara Murphy, clinical psychologist at Brown University. Cara Murphy works at the Center for Alcohol and Addiction in the School of Public Health and the Center for Addiction and Disease Risk Exacerbation. Jamie Hartmann-Boyce interviews Cara Murphy about her new trial, Trial for Harm Reduction With Incentives & Vaping E-cigarettes (THRIVE) and funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. This trial will assess the effect of e-cigarettes and incentives on combustible cigarette smoking in individuals with overweight/obesity who smoke cigarettes. A randomized group of participants will given e-cigarettes for 6 weeks. carbon monoxide will be monitored and participants will either receive fixed incentives for sample completion or receive varying incentives contingent on their carbon monoxide levels. Researchers will compare groups to understand the effect of each condition on smoking-related behaviour. Cara outlines how individuals with overweight/obesity who smoke cigarettes have greatly increased risks of metabolic, cardiac, and pulmonary diseases due to the synergistic effects of tobacco and obesity. Cara also discusses issues faced by people who smoke and are overweight. Switching to e-cigarettes may decrease the risk of negative health outcomes and be a promising approach. This podcast is a companion to the electronic cigarettes Cochrane living systematic review and shares the evidence from the monthly searches. Our literature searches carried out on 1st December and 1st January found the following . 1 new study by Xu et el 2023 (Xu Y, Goldenson NI, Prakash S Augustson EM, Shiffman S, Randomized trial assessing the effect of the JUUL system on switching away from cigarettes and smoking reduction among U.S. adults who smoke cigarettes. The Herle Burly was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as CN Rail and Uber Canada. We're recording this one 2 days post the UCP majority victory in Alberta. And while that result may have been a shock to some, it was not a shock to me, based on what I was observing as the campaigns wound into their last couple of weeks. We're gonna break it all down today, doing a retrospective anatomy of the campaign. Who voted for who and why? What ended up mattering most to the electorate? What didn't matter. And then we'll speculate just a bit on the possible futures for Smith, the UCP, Notley and the NDP.Helping me do that, 2 pair of highly analytical, Alberta boots on the ground: Jason Markusoff, making his debut on The Herle Burly! Jason has been writing about Alberta for nearly 2 decades with Maclean's, the Calgary Herald and Edmonton Journal. He's currently at the CBC as a producer and writer … and appears regularly on Power and Politics' Power Panel, and various other CBC current affairs shows. And then, it's our most excellent friend of the show, 4-time Herle Burly guest (she's almost a squatter here, godammit!) … Janet Brown. Janet is the Principal of Janet Brown Opinion Research, based in Calgary. She's been examining and tracking public opinion in Alberta for over 25 years. There's simply no voice I trust more on what going on in the province.Thank you for joining us on #TheHerleBurly podcast. It was a big week in Alberta politics. A big-spending budget from Premier Danielle Smith's UCP says a lot about how the governing party intends to win the May election. So does the response from Rachel Notley's NDP. Pundits say it's too close to call right now. So, what'll it take for either party to win? Our Real Talk Round Table digs in. But first... 2:45 | Sarah Lawrynuik's been doing remarkable reporting from the front lines in Ukraine. The band is back together! The popular Group Chat Round Table convenes in person for the first time in Real Talk history (1:00), as communications advisor Jenny Adams, lawyer Harman Kandola, and development consultant Jarrett Campbell gather around our Urban Timber table. Harman's just back from the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, so we start (4:40) with story time and a debate: who's Canada's most spectacular male athlete right now - Alphonso Davies or Connor McDavid? Was it politically savvy or stupid for Danielle Smith to skip Rachel Notley's portrait unveiling? Jenny (21:33) tells us what advice she'd have given Premier Smith. Duelling polls tell a different story re: what Alberta's next provincial election could look like. The crew reads into the numbers (39:31) six months out. Jarrett grew up in Manning, Alberta, and has been a gun owner his entire adult life. We get into gun control in Canada (54:13), specifically the politics behind Bill C-21. Our panelists are all plugged into Edmonton municipal politics in varying ways, so it makes sense to venture into current budget deliberations at City Hall (1:03:55). We tackle bike lanes, LRT and rec centre construction, the Valley Zoo, downtown revitalization (including City Centre Mall), and more. Erin's pissed off at Metallica, and Kimberly and Janine aren't happy about the state of politics at any level. Dr. Steve Notley is in charge of the El Araj archaeological site in Israel near the Sea of Galilee. He was part of a dig there this past July (2022). Dr. Notley presents what was found and the significance of that discovery.
Do you like puzzles? At our house, the puzzles come out around the winter holidays. Pieces are sorted and assembled, often over multiple hours or days. Some puzzles are quick. Others are difficult because of the multiple shades of color used across the picture. But persistence eventually finds the place for every piece and the picture is complete. Archaeology is much the same. Artifacts are unearthed including building foundations, pottery shards, ancient tools, and coins. They are the puzzle pieces studied to see a picture of the past. Archaeology has validated the bible's historical accuracy on numerous occasions. And that validation continues today. In August of this year, a team of archaeologists excavated a fifth-to-sixth century Byzantine basilica at the el Araj archaeological site on the shores of the Sea of Galilee in Israel. They uncovered a large Greek mosaic that bolsters the theory the church was built over the home of the apostles Peter and Andrew. Steven Notley, professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at Nyack University and co-leader of the expedition, called the basilica's mosaic the “most definitive archaeological connection with Peter." According to Notley, the mosaic is more than 1,500 years old. He also believes it is compelling evidence that the excavation has discovered the town of Bethsaida. * With a puzzle, when most of the pieces are assembled, you can tell what the picture is. Archaeology has pieced so much of the past together we can see the bible is true. *Edie Heipel, "St. Peter's House Believed to Have Been Found on Shore of Sea of Galilee," National Catholic Register, August 24, 2022, https://www.ncregister.com/cna/st-peter-s-house-believed-to-have-been-found-on-shore-of-sea-of-galilee How to leave a review: https://www.sparkingfaith.com/rate-and-review/ Visit Elmer Fuller's author website at: https://www.elmerfuller.com/ Bumper music “Landing Place” performed by Mark July, used under license from Shutterstock.

Lloyd Notley is the Chief Marketing Officer for Escapology, an escape room operator with more than 80 locations worldwide. In this interview, Lloyd walks us through the Escapology experience, and shares how visiting an escape room is a unique activity compared to many other entertainment offerings, because guests are tasked with solving clues and playing games in order to complete the puzzle. Lloyd shares how Escapology has even worked with guests to customize their experience, and in one instance changed the clues so that they would lead to a marriage proposal. Additionally, since an escape room isn't as repeatable as other types of attractions, Lloyd shares how Escapology influences repeat visitation as well as increases length of stay, and also stresses the importance of resolving service failures while the guest is still onsite, so that no matter what, they leave an advocate.
