Over a 14-year sporting career, Sharni Layton became one of our most well-known and decorated netball players. She’s won world titles with the Samsung Diamonds, along with Commonwealth Games gold in 2014. Meanwhile, off the court, the popular defender shocked Australia earlier this year when she has bravely stepped away from the court and missed the 2018 Commonwealth Games due to mental exhaustion. Having recently retired from netball (and announced a move to AFLW in 2019) Sharni’s now more determined than ever to make a comeback on the international stage, speak openly about mental health, and be an inspiration to others who’ve experienced adversity. In this intimate chat, Sharni shares what she’s learnt about emotional resilience, backing yourself, the incredible rise of women in sport, and how she finally decided it was time to walk away from the career she truly loved. Women in sport get the short end of the stick in many circumstances. With increased attention on women playing sports that were traditionally men's domain, host Cecelia Ramsdale and Nat Kringoudis wanted to learn a little more about how we can take away the label of ‘women's' or ‘men's' sport and simplly talk about the game itself. The girls ask freshly retired netball star, Sharni Layton her thoughts, learn how it has shaped her life both on and off the court and what we can take from sport and translate it into our daily lives. Commonwealth Games gold medalist and Olympic boxer Shelley Watts sat down with Shannon and Fiona and told them how she first got into the sport seven years. After a dodgy tackle playing soccer ruined her knee, doing some training and sparring with a friend has led to 78 fights with 63 wins and a true love for the sport has grown. She discusses the current trend of footballers trying their hand at fighting, the difference between amateur and professional boxing and why she probably wouldn’t go pro, and why she thinks her sport needs to maintain some integrity. Outside the ring you’ll find her active on Twitter (@Shelley_Watts) where she’s a strong supporter of women’s sport, rabid follower of all sport and one half of @Strong_Chicks with Collingwood and Australia netballer, plus her good friend, Sharni Layton.
