Lani Pallister had perhaps one of the most successful summers in history in terms of medals won. She went to the Commonwealth Games and was dominant, winning the 400-800-1500 Free and helping Team AUS to gold in the 4x200. She also earned silver in the 200 free behind her teammate, Mollie O'Callaghan. After her time in Glasgow, Pallister kept her momentum going in Irvine. On Night 1, she shocked Summer McIntosh by winning the 200 free, then finished 2nd in the 1500 Free to Katie Ledecky later in the same session. She went on to beat Ledecky in the 400 free and help Team AUS to another gold in the 4x200 free relay, but Pallister saved the best for last. On the final night of competition, in the final women's race, Pallister dove into the pool against Ledecky in the 800 free and came out on top. Pallister led the race wire-to-wire and touched the wall first in 8:06.10 to Ledecky's 8:07.26, marking the first time in Ledecky's career that she had lost the race at an international competition. Pallister ended her summer with 8 golds and 2 silvers from Comm Games and Pan Pacs combined, making history in multiple ways and asserting herself as arguably the best female distance swimmer in the world. Jeremiah Azu has entered what appears to be a growing debate at the Commonwealth Games. He is a sprinter and is talking about respecting the flag, respecting the Commonwealth Games, and just generally making an effort and turning up. Hamish Kerr has been allowed an easy run this week with his maybe/maybe not decision-making process. It's important to point out that he can do whatever he likes. It's just the lack of scrutiny around it, the lack of questions, and the complete absence of any media probing how this has unfolded and wondering on our behalf whether all this “in and out”, “up and down” is actually kosher. It appears Kerr is not alone, as a good chunk of the English team has bailed as well. Which is where Azu comes in, asking what the media should be asking – is this legit? Can you simply turn up if you want, or not if you don't want to? Is the Commonwealth Games just a weekend event of no great consequence? Does representing your country not really count for much anymore? Personally, I don't really care. I'm not a Commonwealth Games fan. As a sports nut, the world is so full these days of the finest of the fine doing amazing things on a regular basis, so do we have time or interest to watch and follow the progress of a team made up of the potential heroes, as opposed to the current ones, because the current ones don't see it as worth their while? It already has survival issues, given Glasgow is being paid for by Victoria. The sports have been cut, and we are down to 3x3 backyard basketball. Now if all of this is ringing a bell, how about a bit of truth and a bit of bluntness and a bit of reality. If you don't want to go, don't get selected. Sponsors and national Governments who fund a lot of this deserve a set up where they know what they are getting, they understand the standard and the expectation. If time has passed this event by, then that's life. If venues are hard to come by, that's life. If it needs to be demoted to an up-and-comers outing, that's fine. But let's clear the air, work out what's what, who's interested, who isn't and where we go. Because it's got bugger's muddle vibes, as they say in the military. And it doesn't need to. I haven't spent that much time watching the Commonwealth Games taking place in Glasgow, but what I have seen has been incredible. They all come to an end on Monday morning our time, having begun back on July 23rd. There's been a great deal of ongoing discussion about the viability of the Commonwealth Games, and whether or not they're finically viable, with the bigger Olympic Games to compete with. All in all, I have to say that my thinking on that has changed over the past few weeks. Once again, we've been treated with a fabulous exhibition of our finest athletes. I've loved catching some of the events and seeing competitors that I've never heard of – let alone seen competing until these games. In terms of the Comm Games future, we're constantly faced with questions that confront us in terms of what is and what isn't affordable, but ultimately, it's fantastic to have something as joyful as an international completion to focus on – or to distract us from the often-overwhelming aspects of everyday life. I did use the word international, which I know isn't strictly true with the Comm Games, but its right up there on the world stage with many great sporting nations. And it only feels like tall poppy syndrome to follow any comment about the Comm Games with “but it's not an international event”. We've had the Football World Cup to get stuck into, the Tour De France as well – and the Commonwealth Games. If I had the time to watch them all, I would. It's also been great that good chunks of those competitions have been free to view, much like the days of old when I grew up watching all of the sport New Zealand competed in – for free. Albeit on a clapped-out early rendition of colour TV. Do you remember the excitement of knowing that Dick Quax, John Walker, or Allison Roe were running in any of the Games? I don't think that collective excitement and enthusiasm has disappeared, I just think that life has become a whole lot busier for most of us. I don't know of anyone who's been able to glue themselves to all of the Comm Games, but I think we're all still celebrating some of the big wins for Kiwis when we get the chance to talk about it all with friends on the phone, or mates over a coffee. Zoe Hobbs and her amazing 100 metre gold medal was a real highlight for me. Zoe made history, producing the run of a lifetime to claim a stunning gold medal in the women's 100m final. The 28-year-old sprinter led from start to finish, crossing the line in a national record time of 10.93 seconds. The performance also established a new Oceania record and cemented Hobbs' place among the greatest athletes New Zealand has produced. That's just one amazing highlight in the mix of fabulous New Zealand wins for me. My youngest daughter once ran at national level, and I loved watching her incredible determination to be the best runner she could be. I share that same sense of joy when I see our determined athletes smashing records and personal bests at these Commonwealth Games. David Liti the weightlifter was another. Liti set a Games record by lifting 223kg to become a two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist. So yes, although I haven't been able to see a whole bunch of events from theses Commonwealth Games, I really hope that they have a long future. In a climate where money is being pulled from so many aspects of life deemed to be unaffordable or frivolous, I sincerely hope that successive governments see the value in supporting our athletes to be the best that they can be. Whether or not they do is entirely out of your —or my— control, but all we can do is cheer loudly and keep celebrating our victorious competitors in the hope that they will a Commonwealth Games to aim for in 2030. It took a while for the Commonwealth Games to get going, but yesterday they did. Lewis Clareburt took gold in the 200 metres butterfly with an insane burst over the last 50 metres, in a race even he called stupid. It was a good feeling for the nation, because no disrespect to the earlier medallists, it's gold that gets the nation going. It's been a funny old Comm Games thus far. It's a scaled down replacement event after Victoria lost their bottle and cancelled their scheduled games. And it's been plagued by no shows from high-performance athletes who thought it beneath their participation. But it's a good meet. To win at the Commonwealth Games still supersedes any win in a national competition. To be the best swimmer amongst nations like Australia or England, or any of the 74 nations present, is a big thing. By the way, this is a record number of countries. When Christchurch hosted back in 1974, they were called the Friendly Games. Watching the coverage from the Crowd Goes Wild team, which is on both Sky and 3, they've got into that vibe. They celebrate the great but also the wacky, the loose and the fun aspects of the Games with their tongues firmly in their cheeks.
