There are a lot of great books, articles, and maps about the impact that place and neighborhood can have on life outcomes. An area that is lacking, however, is the crucial role that social-relational connections plays in repairing the fabric of a place. For this final episode of our series on Neighborhood Engagement, we are excited to share with you a conversation between Shawn Duncan and Seth Kaplan - author, lecturer, and leading expert on fragile states.
Message from Shawn Duncan on September 10, 2023
For the final episode of season one of Place Matters, we're excited to bring you a conversation between Shawn Duncan and two influential members of the Atlanta community: David Edwards, who is the Neighborhood Policy Advisor to current Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, and Shirley Franklin, who served as the 58th Mayor of Atlanta. They'll discuss these critical questions: How can cities begin to place neighborhoods as the center of their plans for growth and change? What does it take to make cities places where all people have the chance to thrive?
In this episode, Shawn Duncan and David Park discuss the "big idea" that makes FCS -- well, FCS! When it comes to addressing chronic material poverty, we might have the right answer, but we've been asking the wrong question. To create real change, it might be time to ask something different.
How do we disrupt systems that protect promote and perpetuate social and inequality? This is not a small task or an easy thing to discuss but if we are serious about bringing social justice to the surface, it is a conversation that we must have and not just today, but ongoing. And here to lead us in this conversation is Dr. Shawn Duncan He is the Director of the training and Consulting Division for an impressive group called Focused Community Strategies or FCS. This organization was started by Dr Lupton best know for the book Toxic Charity, and Charity Detox. Shawn comes to FCS from the nonprofit leadership sector with research and writing focused on pedagogies for social impact. In his previous careers he has focused on multi-sector coalition building for community impact, content and curriculum design, group facilitation, leadership development, and immigration reform advocacy. As the leader of The Lupton Center team, Shawn brings a visionary voice for innovation, a strategic mind for resource development, and the leadership acumen to support and equip the team for success. He loves being a part of a mission-driven team that finds joy in one another while doing such important work. Take a deep dive with us today with our new friend and long-time ally Shawn Duncan.

What a great start we had last week to our 2nd Mile for Mission Kick-off! Our guest speaker for the day, Shawn Duncan, shared many insights that will move RPC forward in healthier mission outreach, especially now, as we bring our gifts together to support our local and global mission partners. If you missed any of his presentations, go to https://www.roswellpres.org/serve. Today, we will make connections with the message from a well-known Bible story and current situations of people we know through our mission partnerships. As we see in the ancient story and in today’s world, God is faithful to help us all go through “fiery” ordeals. Still, we have a responsibility to be ready to face challenges and join with our neighbors so all will experience life and peace. Special Guest: Zablon Kuria.
