This week, long-time guest Joe Kay joins us to catch up on his show, the Play That Rock n' Roll podcast (https://www.youtube.com/@PlayThatPodcast) and discuss the evolving world of podcasting. We chat about Joe's recent trips to Nashville and Los Angeles, where he networked with other creators and interviewed legendary musicians like bassist Billy Sheehan. Our conversation explores the current "podcast bubble," Spotify's shift away from major celebrity contracts, and the industry-wide pivot toward video content on platforms like Netflix. We also dive into the frustrations of dealing with YouTube's automated AI bots and algorithms that often make it difficult for viewers to find the content they actually follow. Along the way, we discuss strategies for building an audience outside of social media, Joe's take on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame debate, his upcoming move into live streaming and much, much more! Enjoy!

Bringing The Darkness To The Light with Catherine Nadal Guest, Mike Krompass from The Fell - the Creative Fire Behind a Modern Rock Sound Introducing Mike Krompass and The Fell In this episode of Bringing the Darkness to the Light, host Catherine Nadal welcomes Mike Krompass, guitarist for the band The Fell, as well as a multi-platinum producer, songwriter, mixer, engineer, multi-instrumentalist, and music executive. Catherine explains that she recently saw The Fell perform in Liverpool, New York, at the start of their tour and became an immediate fan of the band's energy, sound, and songwriting. She especially praises the song “Footprints,” describing it as the kind of track she can play repeatedly without wanting to turn it off. A Lifelong Musician with a Wide Range of Influences Mike explains that he started playing guitar at four years old and knew from a young age that music was what he wanted to do. He recalls seeing Michael Jackson in concert as a child and being inspired by guitarist Jennifer Batten, while also growing up with a wide range of musical influences including funk, disco, metal, progressive rock, R&B, the Beatles, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, Extreme, Mr. Big, Dokken, Dio, and Michael Jackson. Although his parents were not musicians, he was influenced by musical figures in his extended family and later learned a great deal from guitarists, drummers, music stores, studios, and working musicians around him. From Toronto to Los Angeles, Nashville, the UK, and Back Mike describes growing up in Toronto and eventually moving to Los Angeles to pursue his rock-star dreams. Although that path did not unfold exactly as he imagined, Los Angeles opened doors into film, television, songwriting, production, and working with pop, country, and rock artists. He also spent years moving between Los Angeles and Nashville, where he became immersed in the songwriting culture and appreciated the respect Nashville gives to songwriters. After time in the UK, he returned to Toronto, carrying with him a broad international career shaped by persistence, adaptability, and a refusal to limit himself to one genre or role. How The Fell Came Together The conversation turns to the formation of The Fell. Mike says the project began because he wanted to reconnect with his own musical passion after years of producing and writing for other artists. He wanted to create rock music for himself, with guitar solos and songs that came from his own roots. He reached out to Billy Sheehan, who quickly responded and suggested they start a band rather than simply work as hired players. Mike was also working with singer Toby Rand, whose voice, songwriting, stage presence, and modern rock energy helped complete the core sound. Although the project was delayed for years because of other commitments, Mike says the chemistry between himself, Billy, and Toby was the magic that eventually brought The Fell back together. Footprints, Trippin, and the Band's Sound Catherine and Mike discuss several songs from The Fell, beginning with “Footprints,” which Mike says was one of the earliest songs written with Toby Rand and was intended to have a mainstream radio feel with a strong hook. He also talks about the video, which was shot in a World War II-era bunker in Poland and later reworked with footage from other videos. They then discuss “Trippin,” which Mike says has a different feel and hints of Faith No More influence, especially in the chorus melody. Mike explains that while the songs may sound different from one another, they share a sonic identity through the drum sounds, large guitar tones, and the focus on strong songwriting beneath the rock production. Producing, Touring, and What Comes Next The final portion explores Mike's production skills, the practical advantage of being able to record drums, guitars, bass sketches, and vocals in his own studio, and his effort not to overproduce The Fell so the band can still sound authentic live. He discusses drummer Nick's role as the newest band member, the group's early tour dates, plans for overseas shows, and the importance of building awareness through live performances and streaming numbers. Mike also talks about his companies, including Noise Nation X, Noise Nation Records, and BCMG Recordings, which work in music licensing, film and television placements, artist development, and catalog representation. The episode closes with Catherine encouraging listeners to follow Mike and The Fell, then rolling out with the band's song “Kill Switch.”

Season 20, Episode 49 of The Adventures of Pipeman. It's the Pipeman in the Pit weekly segment of The Adventures of Pipeman.Chapter 1: Carmine Appice and his reformed Cactus on behalf of the new blues rock album, Temple Of Blues II, that's due out April 3 via Cleopatra Records. Now the Temple opens again, this time for an all-star aggregation that recalls Ted Nugent, Billy Sheehan, Bumblefoot, Dee Snider and Pat Travers from volume one, alongside an all-new wave of heavy hitters including Steve Morse (Deep Purple), Tracii Guns (L.A. Guns), Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow, Deep Purple), Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy Osbourne, Quiet Riot), Alex Skolnick (Testament), and a whole lot more! And Temple Of Blues II takes us back to their birth. That summer, Cactus were among the main attractions at the Isle of Wight Festival in England, and the new album's “Purple Haze” reunites them with both another of that bill's audience favorites, Melanie, and its overall headliner, Jimi Hendrix.Elsewhere on this thunderous sequel, Pat Travers returns for the mighty “Moanin' At Midnight,” Joe Lynn Turner joins Morse, Carmine's Guitar Zeus bandmate Tony Franklin and Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater) for “Bad Stuff,” Dee Snider (Twisted Sister) and Tracii Guns (L.A. Guns) lead the way for “The Little Red Rooster,” and Ted Nugent and Bob Daisley (Rainbow) join forces for an astonishing “Spoonful.”Track List:1. Back Door Man Pt. 1 & 2 feat. Songs like “Close To The Bone,” “Hit A Moonshot,” and “Every Man-Any Man”The collaborative nature of Emotion Factory Reset led to the album title, a phrase from Phil Sandoval. “To me, ‘Emotion Factory Reset' means to reset yourself back to clarity. Take a pause and breathe before you respond or react. You can't control outside events, but you can control your mind,” the guitarist says. “How you interpret things is what hurts you, not the event itself.”ARMORED SAINT Presents “Hit A Moonshot” Video / Single From Emotion Factory Reset Full-LengthIn advance of the record's release, the band presents the first single and album opener, “Close To The Bone.” Comments Bush, “The first track on the record sounds like vintage ARMORED SAINT. Yet vintage that comes out in 2026! How did we do that? The title of the record, Emotion Factory Reset appears as the first line of the bridge. Killer riffs, awesome rhythms and attacking vocals gets this train rolling. The title implies the human response to withdraw and keep things to yourself instead of being confrontational; Something I believe we all struggle with as humans. Do you just say, ‘aww, whatever man,' or do you say, ‘hey, fuck you!' Depends on the moment I guess.”Click Here to Subscribe to The Adventures of Pipeman for PERKS, BONUS Content & FREE GIVEWAYS! Take some zany and serious journeys with The Pipeman aka Dean K. This week Tom & Zeus review the 2025 solo album from former KISS founding member and drummer Peter Criss, called "Peter Criss!" Peter's highly anticipated solo album was released on December 19, 2025. The self-titled album is Peter's 6th solo album It features guests, like John 5, Paul Shaffer, Billy Sheehan, Piggy D and more. The album was produced by Peter Criss and Barry Pointer. All lyrics were written by Peter and the music was composed by Peter and Mike McLaughlin who played lead and rhythm guitar on the album, with the exception of the 3 songs that John 5 played on. The album was filled with a variety of songs and styles. However, it is probably the most rock record ever done by Peter Criss. This is the 9th album by KISS members outside of KISS that SIOL has reviewed. As usual they rank the songs and then rank the album and covers against the eight previous KISS member albums outside of KISS. Make sure you hear BOTH opinions because they are NOT the same! So get ready to jiggle jiggle, jiggle jiggle jiggle! Yeah Peter! From scoring sci-fi films with blenders and hair dryers to shredding with the Hall of Fame jazz group Gamalon, guitarist Dave Schmeidler has spent a lifetime coloring outside the lines. A Kenmore native who cut his teeth alongside legends like Billy Sheehan and studied under icons like Joe Pass, Dave's career spans prog, Celtic, blues, and experimental rock. While his resume boasts award-winning chops and a 20-year tenure at Buffalo's Top Shelf Music, the true thread through his work is a signature sense of wit—proving that "no style of music is safe from him." Whether he's performing with the Blues Daddios or crafting his next solo record, Dave remains fueled by a relentless curiosity and the simple, infectious joy of the performance. Hey there, everyone. I'd like to welcome you to a special edition of the podcast - a joint creation between Why Music Matters and The Buffalo History Museum.  This episode, which we've named 12/8/80 (In the Name of Love), was created with my good friend Anthony Greco, Director of Exhibits at The Buffalo History Museum, and creator and host of the Museum's podcast. The episode explores an evening that changed the world for the worse. And it turns out that there's an interesting Buffalo angle to the story of this tragic night. On December 8, 1980, as a then-unknown band called U2 played to a sparse crowd as they opened for the power trio Talas at Stage One, just outside Buffalo, the world was upended by the murder of John Lennon. Lennon's death transformed an ordinary evening into a defining moment in music and cultural history. This episode tells the story of that night. I'd like to thank Anthony Greco for his outstanding work on this joint venture. And shout-outs are in order to Willie Nile and Billy Sheehan, both of whom were kind enough to share their memories of that fateful evening with me. Additional thanks to WKBW in Buffalo, who shared with us an excerpt of their 2017 interview with Bruce Moser - a Buffalo promoter and dear friend who played a significant role in breaking U2 in the American Northeast, way back in 1980. Bruce passed away in 2020. This joint podcast is dedicated to his memory, with thanks for all he gave - to Buffalo, and to the world. We all miss you, Bruce. Thanks for joining us. Take it away, Anthony Greco…

Ep. 124 Mr. Big - Lean Into It - Review & Reaction Released in March 1991, Lean Into It is Mr. Big's second studio album and the record that catapulted the band into international fame. Blending technical musicianship with radio-ready hooks, it showcased the supergroup's lineup of Eric Martin (vocals), Paul Gilbert (guitar), Billy Sheehan (bass), and Pat Torpey (drums). The album became a landmark in the early '90s hard rock scene, arriving just before grunge would dominate the charts. Its biggest hit, “To Be With You,” reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped charts worldwide, proving that shred guitarists and virtuoso players could still produce mainstream ballads that resonated globally. The record balanced technical brilliance (complex riffs, dazzling solos, rhythm tightness) with a pop sensibility—making it one of the last big glam/hard rock albums to leave a massive mark before the shift in rock music's landscape.

On this week's episode, I talk with Billy Sheehan and Mike Krompass from The Fell, along with Jake Diab and Joe Coccimiglio from Autumn Kings. The Fell is a band that Mike founded 10 years ago. They've dropped two singles, Killswitch and Face Out - the title track. They have an EP coming out in October, with the full-length album coming out in 2026. How does one go about getting Billy Sheehan in the band? What legendary artist's album did Billy just play on? Billy just played a giant show in Indonesia with Bumblefoot and Steve Vai, among others. I asked him about the last time he played with Steve, who he played with in the David Lee Roth band. That's just for starters with this conversation. Up next, it's Jake and Joe from Autumn Kings. The boys recently played a string of shows in Europe. We talk about that and some special guests who came to see them on tour. Is there new music coming from AK? Yes. When? Well, they couldn't say exactly, but they gave us a hint. They're playing Riff Fest on September 20th at Pine Knob.Enjoy and thanks for listening!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Eric Martin, born October 10, 1960, in Long Island, New York, is best known as the soulful, powerhouse lead vocalist of the rock band Mr. Big. Raised in a military family that moved frequently, Martin eventually found his way to the West Coast, where his passion for music took root. Originally a drummer, he discovered his true calling as a frontman after stepping out from behind the kit. With a naturally commanding voice, he began carving out his place in the Bay Area rock scene during the late '70s and early '80s.His first major break came with the band 415, which soon rebranded as the Eric Martin Band (EMB). Blending hard rock with melodic hooks, the group built a strong regional following and released the album Sucker for a Pretty Face in 1983. They shared stages with giants like ZZ Top, Journey, and Hall & Oates, gaining a reputation for high-energy performances. Despite their momentum, EMB disbanded a couple of years later, leading Martin to pursue a solo career and continue developing his distinct blend of rock, pop, and soul.In 1988, Martin was recruited to front a new supergroup featuring bassist Billy Sheehan, guitarist Paul Gilbert, and drummer Pat Torpey. The band, named Mr. Big, launched with a self-titled debut in 1989 and quickly gained traction. Their 1991 album Lean Into It catapulted them into international stardom, largely thanks to the acoustic ballad “To Be With You,” which topped charts in over a dozen countries. Martin's dynamic vocal range and emotive delivery helped define the band's unique sound—a blend of technical musicianship and sing-along accessibility.Throughout the '90s and into the 2000s, Martin balanced work with Mr. Big alongside a prolific solo career. He released several solo albums, collaborated with Japanese artists, and even joined the Tak Matsumoto Group, a hard rock project that reached No. 1 on Japan's Oricon charts. One of his most notable side projects was the Mr. Vocalist series, where he reinterpreted classic Japanese and Western pop songs, further cementing his popularity across Asia.Following a brief hiatus, Mr. Big reunited in 2009 for a world tour and new albums, maintaining a loyal fan base across the globe. The band suffered a major loss with the passing of drummer Pat Torpey in 2018, but pressed on in his honor. In 2024, they released Ten, their final studio album, and concluded “The BIG Finish” farewell tour. Today, Eric Martin continues to tour as a solo artist and guest vocalist, beloved by fans for his passionate performances, resilient spirit, and unmistakable voice that's powered some of rock's most enduring anthems.

Hey now, music lovers.    Welcome to Why Music Matters, a podcast where we examine the power and influence that music can wield in our lives.  I'm your host, Jeff Miers.   Today, my guest is the legendary guitarist, performer and band-leader Jamie Holka.    As a musician whose name is mentioned in hushed, reverential tones by his peers, Jamie has earned a reputation as a virtuosic guitarist and a fearless improvisor, whether he's playing blazing electric blues, fiery progressive rock, or effortlessly hip finger style jazz.    The Niagara Falls native is well-loved across the Western New York region, but he's also caught the attention of many of the finest musicians he grew up revering. That's how he ended up as an influential member of the rekindled 1970s progressive rock/jazz fusion ensemble Captain Beyond, with whom Jamie performed between 2017 and 2020.    And that's also how he befriended the brilliant rock drummer Bobby Rondinelli, a veteran of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow and  Blue Oyster Cult, among many others. Jamie and Rondinelli teamed to create The Gathering, a new album of guitar-centered instrumentals that features heavy input from legendary guests like Deep Purple keyboardist Don Airey, and iconic bassists Billy Sheehan and Kenny Aaronson.  Jamie, Rondinelli, Aaronson and friends will celebrate the release of The Gathering with a show at The Cave, 71 Military Rd in Buffalo, on Friday, June 6, at 7 pm.    During our chat, I asked Jamie about the genesis of his love for the guitar, how it feels to be making music with his childhood idols, and what it means to be an eternal student of music.   Welcome to Why Music Matters, Jamie Holka… -- Produced by 678Main Studio and Creative Services https://678main.com --- Follow Why Music Matters on social media https://instagram.com/whymusicmatterspodcast https://www.facebook.com/whymusicmatterspodcast https://twitter.com/wmmpod

This week, to celebrate the 100th episode of My Weekly Mixtape, I am creating The Ultimate Mixtape by asking 65 different people (previous My Weekly Mixtape guests, friends of the show & the amazing Patreon Mixtapers) the same question: If you had to choose one song for the ultimate mixtape (any song / any genre), that would be locked away in a time capsule for others to discover years or decades for now…which song would you choose and why?  Now, I'm not lost on the fact that the question is just a spin on the “desert island song” question that a lot of my guests have been asked countless times. The twist for the next few episodes is: I am taking those 65 song choices (all of which are from various bands, artists, decades, genres and tempos), and curating them into what I hope will be a properly sequenced playlist from a musical perspective!  At the very least? This was a fun & unique twist on a question as old as interviews themselves. But at its best? Congratulations, you're listening to The Ultimate Mixtape!!  This ep. includes the final 25 responses!
