Max ZT is a superb Grammy-nominated hammered dulcimer player. I am really inspired by his broad and deep musical approach, improvisation skills, and virtuosity. You'll be hearing inspirations and clips from his recent album with the handpan virtuoso Manu Delago, and in fact this was recorded during their album release tour of the U.K. and Europe. Max explained fascinating details about his approach to building hammered duclimers with the guidance of David Lindsey. If you're a fan of Manu's handpan playing you'll also be gaining more understanding into his creative approach to performing. You'll hear the inspiring stories of how Max came to be a student of both the Cissoko Griot family in Senegal, and the late Pandit Shivkumar Sharma in India. Max has also with us shared clips of House of Waters grammy-nominated album “On Becoming” as well as some great behind the scenes moments in the recording studio. Among Max's collaborators, you'll hear about the brilliant Moto Fukushima, the 6 string electric bass player in House of Waters, and Max's wife the wonderful singer and athlete Priya Darshini. I feel that Max's insights into mindfulness and creativity apply broadly to all of us.Complete Show Notes with all the Links!(00:00) Intro(02:59) “Deuce” with Manu Delago, clip of track 5 Inhale(05:16) Manu Delago, recording album “Deuce”, touring(15:36) different techniques on dulcimer and handpan, with clip of track 4 “Break” from “Deuce”(23:41) the innovations in tuning the dulcimer(27:00) building and designing dulcimers with David Lindsey(33:18) life-changing encounter, clip of track 6 “Rally” from “Deuce”, India, student of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma “Shivji”(37:50) other linked episodes and ways to support this podcast(38:47) India, student of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma(46:04) House of Waters, album “On Becoming” clip of track 1 “Folding Cranes”(47:07) Moto Fukushima, Avaloch Farm Music Institute with clip of track 2 Avaloch, album “On Becoming”(53:18) creative process, importance of improvisation House of Waters, clip of track 8 Improv 13, On Becoming: the Improv Sessions (01:00:41) rewards of improvisation, Mike Stern, with clip of track 4, Hang in the Air, On Becoming House of Waters(01:04:39) Priya Darshini, with clip of track 8, The Wall, On Becoming, House of Waters(01:07:57) Senegal Cissoko Griot family, kora(01:11:48) celebrating the uniqueness of the dulcimer, Bard(01:14:56) upcoming showsphoto: David Sosnow
On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with guitarist and composer Bob Lanzetti, best known as one of the founding members of Snarky Puppy. I've admired Bob's playing for a long time, so getting the chance to talk with him felt especially meaningful. We begin with something many musicians quietly carry with them: the fear of hand issues and how that concern evolves over the course of a career. Bob reflects honestly on how he thinks about it now compared to earlier years.From there, we rewind to the beginning—growing up around his dad's guitar, discovering The Beatles, and the simple invitation that changed everything: “Learn this song and you can sit in with my band.” That moment set Bob firmly on the path toward becoming a guitarist. He traces his journey through early mentors, jazz studies, and eventually to the University of North Texas, where he found a musical community that would change his life—and where Snarky Puppy first came together.We spend time talking about the musical ecosystem around North Texas as well, especially the gospel and R&B scenes that shaped Bob's ear in ways the classroom couldn't. Bob shares how Snarky Puppy actually learns and rehearses music—often through oral tradition, demos, and Logic sessions—and how the band's three-guitar setup works without stepping on each other's sonic space. Along the way, he reflects on something younger musicians often overlook: the importance of restraint, listening, and self-balancing within a band.One of my favorite parts of the conversation centers on Bob's Nosferatu project, where he composed and performed an original score for the classic silent film during the COVID years. That project opened the door to exploring 20th-century classical textures, string writing, layered guitars, and production techniques. We wrap up by talking about the wide range of influences that shape Bob's music—from Charlie Christian and Jim Hall to Sonic Youth and Derek Bailey—and what's ahead in 2026, including GroundUP Festival, touring with Snarky Puppy alongside the Metropole Orchestra, his trio work, and the growing role of producing in his creative life.Key TakeawaysMusicians confront physical concerns over time — long careers require resilience and perspective.Early invitations can shape a life path — a simple opportunity to sit in with a band set Bob on the guitar journey.Community matters — the University of North Texas and the surrounding Dallas scene were foundational for Snarky Puppy.Listening and restraint define great band playing — especially in complex ensemble settings like a three-guitar lineup.Musical learning often happens by ear — oral tradition and demos play a huge role in how bands develop material.Creative side projects expand the palette — Bob's Nosferatu score opened the door to new textures and production ideas.Producing can become another creative outlet — shaping the sound of recordings scratches the same itch as performing.Music from the EpisodeB - Bob LanzettiAnonymous - Bob LanzettiThe Seven Deadly Sins (from Nosferatu) - Bob LanzettiJenny is a Donkey - Bob LanzettiAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a podcast hosted by Brad Williams, featuring conversations with musicians, composers, producers, and creative thinkers about their musical journeys. 60 Years Forward: Yamaha at NAMM 2026Yamaha at NAMM 2026: Chris Buck Revstar, Pacifica SC & 60 Years of Guitar InnovationSome brands chase nostalgia. Yamaha builds forward.At NAMM 2026, I spoke with Andy Winston to talk about 60 years of Yamaha guitar design—and why this company keeps delivering instruments that punch way above their price point.The conversation started with the Chris Buck Signature Revstar. Buck is the guitarist for Cardinal Black, and he's earned his own model. The specs tell the story: overwound P90 pickups for a hotter sound, wraparound tailpiece with adjustable saddles, stainless steel frets, lightweight tuners, and those old-school inlays from the first-generation Revstar. No boost circuit. Buck wanted it stripped to essentials.Then Andy dropped a tease: Matteo Mancuso is getting his own Revstar this summer. The Italian virtuoso. That's a statement.We moved to the new Pacifica SC—Yamaha's answer for T-style players. Humbucker in the neck, single coil in the bridge, and pickups designed in partnership with Rupert Neve's team. The boost circuit under the bridge pickup gives you five sounds from two pickups. Made in Indonesia at $999 or Made in Japan with compound radius fretboard and IRA wood treatment at $2,199.I bought my nephew a Pacifica. Entry level, around $200. It works. That's Yamaha's philosophy—you can start at $200 and work your way up to a Mike Stern signature model without ever leaving the family.But here's what stuck with me.Andy said something that defines Yamaha's approach: "We don't do reissues. You're never gonna see us reissue a 1972."Sixty years of guitar history, and they're not looking backward. The Revstar draws inspiration from the 1970s Super Flight, sure—but it's chambered mahogany, tuned to eliminate harsh mid-range frequencies. Yamaha builds pianos, violins, marimbas. They know how to tune wood. They apply that knowledge to electric guitars in ways other companies don't.The BB Bass series came next. String-through body with 45-degree break angle. Extra bolts pulling the neck tight into the pocket. A maple stripe running through the center of the body for note response. Active/passive switching. Five-ply neck. Professional features at prices that don't require a car payment."We give people more instrument than what a price tag says," Andy told me.That's not marketing. That's mission.Before we wrapped, Andy shared a personal story. In 1977, hair down to his shoulders, bell bottoms on, his mom decided he was serious about guitar. She bought him a Yamaha FG-75. His first real acoustic. He doesn't have that one anymore, but he found a replacement. Had to.That's brand loyalty earned over decades. Not through heritage mythology—through instruments that work, that last, that give players what they need without emptying their wallets.Sixty years of guitar design. No reissues. Just forward.Yamaha keeps proving that innovation and accessibility aren't mutually exclusive.Marco Ciappelli interviews Andy Winston from Yamaha at NAMM 2026 for ITSPmagazine.Part of ITSPmagazine's On Location Coverage at NAMM 2026.

In this episode, I sit down with drummer Jordan Perlson for a deep dive into collaboration, sound, and how we listen to music in 2025. I've admired Jordan's playing for a long time, especially with Becca Stevens, and it was a joy to finally talk with him about his journey and how he thinks about music.We start with how he first connected with Becca Stevens and her band in New York, and what it means to show up as a collaborator while still protecting your own musical “mission statement.” Jordan talks about the tension between being a supportive hired gun and staying true to his instincts – and how, as he gets older, it's harder to ignore that inner compass.Jordan shares some of the drummers who have shaped his ears over the years, from John Bonham and Will Calhoun to Bill Stewart and Jay Bellerose – and why the “magic” of certain players only grows with time. We get into Bellerose's multi-percussionist approach to the drum set, compensating for supposed “weaknesses,” and how those limitations can actually lead to a more unique sound.From there, we talk about Jordan's move from New York to Nashville in 2016: what he was (and wasn't) seeing in 10-year-old versions of himself on the New York scene, and why he decided to build a life in a place where quality of life and long-term sustainability felt more achievable. I loved hearing how his “wide net” hustle in New York evolved into a more focused, intentional approach in Nashville, where his priority list was: Jeff Coffin, Victor Krauss, Adrian Belew – and then figuring out how to be musically meaningful to them.Jordan also shares beautiful stories from touring with Adrian Belew, including Adrian's fearlessness as a guitarist, singer, and composer, and what it's like to sit inside that kind of energy every night.We spend a good chunk of time talking about how we listen to music now versus how we listened when we grew up. Jordan reflects on the difference between buying a record or cassette for one song and then slowly falling in love with the deep cuts, versus today's playlist culture, where it's easy to skip anything that doesn't hit instantly. We compare notes on hearing albums at 14 versus revisiting them in our late 40s, and how our relationship with certain songs completely changes over time.Later in the episode, we get into:Growing up outside Philadelphia, going to Berklee, and why classical percussion never really clicked for Jordan, beyond a love of snare drum and books like Portraits in RhythmHis experience teaching – from a stint at MTSU to working with already-professional drummers looking to refine specific skills – and why an intermittent, online-friendly lesson model actually fits his students best.His work with Guthrie Trapp's trio (and their weekly gig at the Underdog in Nashville), the expanded Guitar Party project with Guthrie, Tom Bukovac, Jed Hughes, Tim Marks, and Jimmy WallaceThe trio with Jeff Coffin and Victor Krauss, their first record together, and the almost-finished follow-up featuring guests like Mike Stern, Jerry Douglas, Béla Fleck, and Sam BushPlaying on Jessica Simpson's recent JD McPherson-produced projects and how surprising (in the best way) that music isThe realities of remote recording from his home studio: the freedom, the creativity, the weird waiting-game around revisions, and why some magic can only happen when a band is in the room togetherJordan is thoughtful, honest, and funny, and this conversation felt like hanging out with a friend who happens to be one of the most musical drummers on the planet. I had a great time talking with him, and I think you'll really enjoy hearing how he sees the instrument, the industry, and the future of making records.To learn more about Jordan, please visit his website.Music from the Episode:e (The Adrian Belew Power Trio)Thank you for listening. John Scofield is undeniably one of the preeminent forces in contemporary jazz guitar. Along with a few of his peers—see Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, Mike Stern—he modernized the sound of our instrument and the genre. But there's much more to Scofield than just jazz.To break down the deepest of Scofield's records and talk about the intricacies of his playing, we called up another great, Adam Levy. There's a great chance you've heard Levy alongside artists such as Tracy Chapman or Norah Jones, and his solo discography is deep! Adam has a host of Scofield know-how, so we get right to it. Episode 84: Dave Weckl One of the most influential drummers of all time, today's guest is the legend, Dave Weckl. From his legendary years with Chick Corea's Elektric Band and Akoustic Band to his groundbreaking solo debut Master Plan, to his session work with Simon & Garfunkel, Nile Rodgers, George Benson, Mike Stern, Robert Plant, Madonna, and more, his drumming has defined modern fusion and inspired generations worldwide. This is the Dave Weckl deep dive! Two and a half hours long, intimate, honest, and open. Dave shares stories about his early breaks with Nite Sprite, French Toast, and landing the Simon & Garfunkel Reunion Tour that put him on the map. We dig into his days as a first-call New York session player in the 80s, and go deep inside his years with Chick Corea, from writing records like “Got a Match?” to how the Grammy-winning Akoustic Band came together, as Dave reflects on what made Chick so special as a bandleader. We talk about his solo career beginning with Master Plan, his longtime collaborations with Jay Oliver and Mike Stern, and studying with Freddie Gruber even at the height of his career. Dave has always pushed himself to grow as a player. We discuss how he created his signature Dave Weckl Vic Firth drumsticks, his Sabian Evolution and Legacy cymbal lines, and what led him to being the first person to put holes in cymbals. We talk about the Dave Weckl Band, teaching through his online school, and the importance of making musical choices on the drums rather than just displaying technique. This episode is packed with stories, insight, advice, and inspiration from one of the greatest drummers to ever sit behind the kit. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Dave Weckl. Episode 77: Steve Smith.The incredible, multi-faceted, Steve Smith was one of my favorite drummers growing up. His playing with Journey blew me mind, and the fact that he had a full-on jazz career alongside his rock success made him even more inspiring to me. Steve made Modern Drummer's Top 25 Drummers of All Time list and won the #1 All-Around Drummer Award five years in a row. His credits are stacked, from early gigs with Jean Luc-Ponty (alongside Allan Holdsworth), Focus, and Ronnie Montrose, to arena-filling hits with Journey, to leading his band Vital Information (for the past 4 decades). He's done sessions with Mariah Carey, Andrea Bocelli, Vasco Rossi, Zucchero, Savage Garden, Bryan Adams, and Zakir Hussain. On the jazz side, Steve has played with heavyweights like Steps Ahead, Tom Coster, Ahmad Jamal, Victor Wooten, Mike Stern, Randy Brecker, Frank Gambale, Stuart Hamm, Dweezil Zappa, Hiromi, and Bill Evans.Steve is one of the greatest to ever do it, and it was a total honor to have him on the show. I hope you enjoy my conversation with the legendary Steve Smith! Special thanks to Zildjian. I used their ALCHEM-E Perfect Tune Headphones in this episode and loved it. This week, Scott sat down with his colleagues Tyler McBrien and Roger Parloff, as well as special guest Claire Meynial, U.S. correspondent for Le Point, to talk over the week's big national security news, including:“Make Europe Aghast Again.” Vice President J.D. Vance stunned the Munich Security Conference last week with remarks that criticized European allies for suppressing far-right and anti-immigration voices while playing down threats from China and Russia. Combined with the Trump administration's past hostility to Transatlantic relationships, many are taking Vance's as a sign of a downgrade in the U.S.-Europe relationship. But is this overstating things? And how far can the Trump administration adjust the relationship on its own, even if it wanted to?“I Would Do Anything for Bove, but I Won't Do That.” (Credit to Robert Anderson, via Mike Stern.) The resignation of seven Justice Department attorneys over their refusal to move to dismiss charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams at the direction of acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove has brought national attention to the Trump administration's apparent intent to use its discretion over criminal prosecution as a policy tool to advance its immigration and potentially other agendas. But what do these recent events tell us about the potential for—and limits on—such a strategy? “Animus Instinct.” The legal challenge to President Trump's executive order banning transgender individuals from military service and halting gender-affirming care finally had a hearing in federal court this week. And in a barnburner, U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes raked the Justice Department over the coals, querying whether the ban was the result of “animus.” But how big a difference will her line of inquiry make in the end? Is there any realistic chance the courts will intervene?For object lessons, Roger recommended a visit to the Holocaust Museum as an opportunity for a sober reflection. Tyler passed along Noah Schachtman's portrait of the players in the Eric Adams resignation scandal in Vanity Fair. Scott passed along his new favorite vegetarian pasta recipe, pasta al sugo finto. And Claire discussed some of her work on abortion rights in advance of International Women's Day on March 8, including research into the Comstock Act. We value your feedback! They say we are the sum of our experiences, and as many musicians know, whatever life throws at us, we can take and turn into art. No one knows this better than my guest on the podcast this week, Ray LeVier. Ray is a drummer, composer, producer, author, and motivational speaker who has played and recorded with John Abercrombie, Dave Binney, KJ Denhert, Joe Locke, Francois Moutin, Wayne Krantz, Mike Stern, and Rich Tozzoli. At the age of 12, Ray suffered severe burns all over his body which left him unable to play the drums in a more ‘traditional' way. As a result, Ray has come up with his own innovative methods to play the drums. Ray's story is one of hope and resilience and he shares all of it with us in this episode. Listen in as we discuss Ray's breathing techniques, how to achieve a flow state and optimal performance, how drummers with physical limitations can overcome the challenge and play effectively, why mindfulness is key to creating beautiful art, and more. Let's dive in. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 106695817, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };
In this episode of the Thought Leadership Leverage podcast, host Bill Sherman chats with Karen Wright Gordon, CEO of 5 Dynamics, about revolutionizing organizational performance. Karen explains their unique assessment, a product of Mike Sturm's pioneering research. This tool, while not the company's sole focus, is integral to their methodology. It reveals individual preferences in project phases, enhancing productivity by aligning tasks with personal strengths. Karen elaborates on the five phases: Ideation, Alignment, Planning, Execution, and Evaluation. Each person has phases where they excel and others that drain them. Their assessment helps identify these preferences, fostering a more efficient and satisfying workflow. Karen's journey with 5 Dynamics began when she encountered Mike Sturm at a Women's Presidents Organization meeting. Despite her company's success, she felt unfulfilled. Mike's insights resonated with her, leading her to acquire and further develop his IP, making it accessible and practical for businesses. Karen's vision transcends merely improving performance; she aims to democratize coaching and transform organizational cultures. By focusing on creating a unique lane rather than competing with others, she emphasizes the importance of having Champions—advocates who believe in and spread the methodology. Karen also shares how their methodology has surprised them with its versatile applications, from the corporate world to academia and healthcare. Studies have shown improvements in teamwork, satisfaction, and overall performance when using the 5 Dynamics framework. To keep the work fresh and vital, Karen collaborates with a diverse team, including a young neuroscientist and a seasoned chief revenue officer. This diversity ensures a broad reach and rich perspectives in their thought leadership efforts. Karen feels a profound responsibility to honor Mike Sturm's legacy. Continuing his work and seeing its impact on people's lives keeps her inspired and driven. Three Key Takeaways: • Leveraging Personal Preferences: The 5 Dynamics assessment identifies individual preferences in project phases, enhancing productivity by aligning tasks with personal strengths. • Creating a Unique Path: Karen emphasizes the importance of not just competing but creating a new lane, focusing on democratizing coaching and transforming organizational cultures. • Honoring Legacy and Innovation: Karen's dedication to Mike Stern's legacy drives her to keep the work impactful and fresh, collaborating with a diverse team to reach wider audiences and bring new perspectives.

It's hard to put into words what it means to meet your heroes. To be able hit record 5 minutes later and get to share that conversation with you is one of the prouder moments of my career. With stories about how he started out, practicing in a shed in Steve Smith's backyard, to walking into Electric Ladyland in New York City for a record date where the horn section was Michael and Randy Brecker and Barry Rogers, we cover a lot of ground in this conversation. John Tesh, Tracy Chapman, Chick Corea, Lee Ritenour, Vince Neal, Billy Cobham, Mike Stern, Vinnie Colaiuta, Frank Gambale, about a thousand other legendary recording artists grace the pages of Tim's career highlights. I hope this is the first of many times I get to pick Tim's brain and share it with you. The man is a treasure chest of knowledge and experience with some of the best music and bass related stories you could hope to hear. If you've been following the news out of Congress recently, you've probably been focusing on the narrowly averted government shutdown and the indictment of Democratic Senator Bob Menendez—and, perhaps, the House Republicans' decision to begin an impeachment inquiry against President Biden. But there have also been some notable updates when it comes to the continuing fallout from Jan. 6. Recently, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit unsealed an opinion limiting the ability of the special counsel's office to access phone records from Rep. Scott Perry under the Speech and Debate Clause. Meanwhile, Trump's onetime advisor Peter Navarro was finally convicted of contempt of Congress for defying the Jan. 6 committee. Lawfare Senior Editors Quinta Jurecic and Molly Reynolds sat down with two of our favorite guests to call when there's news about Congress and the law: Mike Stern, former Senior Counsel to the House of Representatives, and Eric Columbus, who recently served as Special Litigation Counsel in the House Office of General Counsel. They discussed Perry, Navarro, how exactly one should define an impeachment inquiry, and, of course, the Menendez indictment.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. Hosted on Acast. In April, former Vice President Mike Pence testified before a federal grand jury under subpoena as part of the special counsel's investigation into January 6. The testimony came after the district court rejected Pence's challenge to the validity of the subpoena under the Speech or Debate Clause of the Constitution. And now, months later, Chief Judge James Boasberg has unsealed his ruling on the matter, along with other documents related to Pence's challenge.When news of the subpoena first broke, Lawfare Senior Editors Molly Reynolds and Quinta Jurecic sat down with Mike Stern and Eric Columbus on the Lawfare Podcast to talk through the issues raised. Now that we have more details about just what took place, Molly and Quinta invited Mike and Eric back to discuss what they made of Pence's argument and the court's decision, and what this episode adds to our understanding of the Jan. 6 investigation more broadly.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. From July 9, 2019: President Trump has declared that he will fight “all the subpoenas” coming from Congress and has claimed “absolute immunity” for White House advisors. In doing so, he has brought the issue of congressional oversight of the executive branch to the front pages. To talk about that very issue, Margaret Taylor sat down with Austin Evers, the executive director of American Oversight, a non-profit government accountability watchdog; and Michael Stern, who served for many years as the Senior Counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives. Stern is the founder of the Point of Order blog, which covers legal issues affecting Congress. They talked about pending oversight litigation, the House of Representatives' strategy, how the Trump administration is responding, and if any of this is normal.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. Special Counsel Jack Smith has issued a subpoena to former Vice President Mike Pence as part of the investigation into Trump's role in instigating the Jan. 6 riot. But Pence has said he'll fight the subpoena. And he's pointed to the Speech or Debate Clause—a constitutional immunity that protects members of Congress—on the argument that he was acting as part of the legislative branch when he presided over the electoral count on January 6, 2021.Setting aside Pence's motives for taking this approach, the merits of the legal argument are less crazy than they might sound. Lawfare senior editors Quinta Jurecic and Molly Reynolds sat down to talk through these issues with two former congressional lawyers: Eric Columbus, who recently served as Special Litigation Counsel in the House Office of General Counsel under Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Mike Stern, a former senior counsel to the House of Representatives.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare.
