On today's edition of Family Talk, Dr. James Dobson concludes his straight-forward discussion with Dr. Owen Strachan, author of Christianity and Wokeness: How the Social Justice Movement Is Hijacking the Gospel and the Way to Stop It. They remind us that wokeness is a potent blend of racism, moral relativism, and grievance. It undermines the unifying work of the Holy Spirit and therefore, is anti-gospel. As a Christian, be encouraged as Dr. Strachan offers a strategy by stating that the only way forward is speaking the truth in love with clarity and conviction. (Ephesians 4:15) We also need to pray for the Lord's intervention to overcome the darkness that surrounds us. To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/707/29

What's the difference between our secular culture's concept of "Social Justice" and the Bible's true concept of justice? Since the rise of the Black Lives Matter Movement in the wake of the George Floyd riots of 2020, Social Justice has been a hot topic in the cultural conversation. Whether it be through reparations and affirmative action policies, mandatory Equity, Diversity and Inclusion training at our workplaces, Critical Race Theory curriculum in schools, colleges and universities, or not-so-subtle messaging in movies and entertainment - it seems like it is unavoidable these days. As Christians, we must be prepared to give a Biblical answer to our cultural moment today. In this episode, we unpack 6 markers of true Biblical Justice in contrast to Social Justice and see how God's standards of justice are better and more beautiful than the secular perversion of justice. You can read the article version of this episode here. Wokeness is a big issue in our culture today and it is seeping into the Church. Yet many don't realize just how insidious and dangerous this ideology really is to the Church and the Gospel. This episode builds on our last episode - "Wokeness, Social Justice and the Church" - to dive deeper into the underlying worldview issues. Woke ideology has a different account of origins and purpose, of sin and what's wrong with the world, of what we must do to make things right again and of its hope for the future. Stemming from its Marxist origins, it tends to be utopian in its outlook, yet brings with it destruction and division leading to dystopia. It is applied to a wide array of cultural issues today such as racism, feminism, LBGTQ issues, post-colonialism, ableism, gender studies, and many more. However, as we will see in this episode, wokeness is an Anti-Gospel that only offers perpetual guilt, never-ending penance with no hope of absolution or forgiveness and a false promise of a utopian future that it can't deliver on. Christians must be aware and prepared to give an answer to these important issues. You can read the article version of this episode here. Social Justice is an often misunderstood, hot-button issue these days. Yet it is one which the Church must grapple with. However, instead, many churches have succumbed to it, adopting anti-biblical doctrines and woke ideologies, they have forfeited biblical justice for the world's secular version of social justice. In this episode, we take a look at how woke ideology and social justice have invaded the Evangelical church through many prominent teachers and pastors and take a look at the dangers it poses. We also define some of the common phrases and concepts such as Postmodernism, Cultural Marxism, Critical Theory, Intersectionality, and Equality versus Equity to see how they are applied on a host of issues such as racism, ableism, feminism, LBGTQ issues, and more. Finally, we will compare and contrast the Bible's vision of justice with that of woke social justice to see that it is antithetical to Scripture. After having recently read and reviewed Owen Strachan's book, 'Christianity and Wokism: How the Social Justice Movement Is Hijacking the Gospel - and the Way To Stop It,' and picking up from an episode published last August, 'Dr. Eric Mason and the Council of Philadelphia,' I made time yesterday and today to read Mason's 2018 book 'Woke Church: An Urgent Call for Christians in America to Confront Racism and Injustice.' Mason, you may recall, is pastor of Epiphany Fellowship Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. And I think even less now that I mistook his tweet storm from 2018 about calling a modern day ecumenical council after having read 'Woke Church.' That is, I think now it would be hard to deny after reading his book that Mason is more than open to the ordination of women in the Church, nor either that he regards theologically conservative Christians opposed to such as anything other than sexists, nor either that he regards theologically conservative Christians opposed to the claims at the heart of social justice and Critical Race Theory as anything other than racists. But this goes back to one of the most helpful confirmations I gleaned from Strachan this past weekend. Most of the books promoting social justice and CRT to Christians don't actually use the technical terms for either. Rather, they argue the presuppositional claims of both so as to prime readers to view the Woke conclusions as inescapable and foregone. Just so, Mason here need not tell us he is for CRT and the ordination of women in those exact words for the discerning reader able to make 4 out of 2+2. To bemoan so many women who've graduated from seminaries but have a hard time getting hired by churches because of "traditional" and "cultural" stereotypes about gender does not leave much to the imagination, after all. For that matter, an odd kind of double-speak is present here where Mason gives an example of what he's hoping we'll see more of in telling how Matt Chandler emailed him and several other black ministers after the shooting death of Philando Castille to extend his condolences and apologize. But, wait. Do those same black ministers also email Matt Chandler and all the other white ministers they know when a young white man is shot by police in questionable circumstances? Or should they? Of course not. But then these are just the sorts of questions which we are expected to not ask on pain of being accused of racism and insensitivity. Thus there is no consistency. Young black men being appointed to leadership roles in churches and organizations is insulting because it's tokenism. But not having enough young black men represented in leadership is also offensive. Here is the test of whether this is the heart's cry of a humble minister of the gospel. Is Mason so willing to hear correction and calls to repentance if they might mean letting go some of the Leftist assumptions he picked up at the academy and in the hood? Are theologically conservative white brothers and sisters just as free to have a conversation about race and the church in America as he is? Or is Mason's idea of conversation like that of so many other Woke folk I've been friends and family to - a one-way monologue rather than a genuine give and take dialogue borne of honesty and good faith? From reading 'Woke Church,' I'm sorry to say I have a near certainty that the latter is the answer. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

Owen Strachan's 'Christianity and Wokeness: How the Social Justice Movement Is Hijacking the Gospel - and the Way to Stop It' is a must-read for every American Christian concerned about the inroads Woke ideology has made over the past few years in our churches. Strachan outlines clearly and thoroughly here how wokeness is distinct from and contrary to Biblical doctrine concerning God, man, sin, and salvation. But he also does more than that. He also helpfully explains what is and is not wokeness. It is not wokeness, for instance, to believe that racism is both a real social evil and sinful. Neither is it wokeness to believe systems can be rigged with two-tiered justice being meted out on the basis of skin color or other inborn traits. Where racism either individual or systemic exists, it is not wokeness to believe Christians both can and should oppose such, declaring them wicked and calling for repentance from the same. What is wokeness is to claim that any statistical imbalance in power, wealth, and status proves that America is currently a systemically racist or sexist country. So also, it is wokeness to assert that racism is a problem unique to white people, and that being white makes one inherently racist and oppressive. It is also wokeness to claim that any imbalance of power is proof of oppression, thereby justifying efforts to radically redistribute wealth and authority. Such claims directly contradict both the letter and spirit of God's Word where we read that God Himself institutes governing authorities - in the Church, civil society, and in the family - and that such deserve our respect and submission. As Strachan points out also, the notion of collective guilt which is at the heart of social justice is inherently unjust, and represents arguably the greatest temptation in our time for those who are inclined to casually bear false witness against their neighbors in pursuit of doing them harm and taking coveted things away from them. For instance, to say that a man is inherently sexist and oppressive if he is the head of his wife and children, regardless how he wields his authority, is to bear false witness against him. So also, to say that a white man, woman, or child is inherently racist, guilty of all the sins of white people against persons of color, fails every test of reasonableness, fairness, and godliness according to God's Word, and is itself a form of racism and even hypocrisy as it purports to act in the name of anti-racism. In 'Christianity and Wokeness' you will find a brief but persuasive catalog of increasing efforts in recent years by high-profile teachers and leaders in the American Church to promote CRT and social justice, as often as not without using the particular terms. But the key issue is not what specific terms are used so much as the substance of the ideas. And in all cases, our responsibility as Christians being to teach only what accords with sound doctrine translates to a responsibility to confront false teaching in all its forms, whatever the source, however popular or well-respected the figure or organization promoting it. Strachan stands here in the tradition of J. Gresham Machen - whose 'Liberalism and Christianity' American Christians should also familiarize themselves with - in saying that Woke Christianity is just the latest iteration of Liberal Christianity. It is not just one among many valid interpretations of the Gospel; it is a different and false gospel, and needs to be both recognized and treated as such. As Strachan not only argues but demonstrates, this need not mean opponents to Woke Christianity become just as mean and shrill as their opponents. But we must nevertheless be clear and steadfast. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

This episode is a crash course on the main points of Critical Theory (CT). You may be surprised to find out that CT is not only about race, but about gender, sexuality, age, weight, abilities, and a host of other things. As Christians, we need to evaluate these types of cultural viewpoints and compare them with a biblical worldview. We hope that this episode will give you a quick understanding of CT and also help you to see how it is incompatible with a biblical worldview. You've heard these baffling views—but do you know where they come from? The “wokeness” that emerged from the social unrest of 2020 has swept through schools, businesses, and even sports. Driven by the radical ideologies of Critical Race Theory and intersectionality, it has destabilized public and private life—including the Church. Many evangelicals have joined the crusade. Gripped by a desire for justice and rightly grieved by past evils like slavery, many pastors are preaching the woke gospel—identifying “whiteness” (an imaginary concept) with “white supremacy,” calling bewildered Christians to repent of their supposed guilt for the sins of past generations. But as theologian Owen Strachan makes clear, this is not true justice, nor is it true Christianity. While wokeness employs biblical vocabulary and concepts, it is an alternative religion, far from Christianity in both its methods and its fruit. A potent blend of racism, paganism, and grievance, wokeness encourages “partiality” and undermines the unifying work of the Holy Spirit. It is not simply not the Gospel; it is anti-Gospel. As Strachan traces the origins of wokeness, lays out its premises, and follows them to their logical conclusions, the contrast of that false faith with the Word of God stands out unmistakably. This succinct but groundbreaking work reveals that wokeness, like other heresies, is not really new. Nor is the antidote: Christ crucified for us. Welcome to The Antithesis with Owen Strachan. What does it mean to be woke? Wokeness is an awareness of the true nature of Western civilization, and now understand it to be a wickedly racist order. This ideology has infiltrated the church. However, the Bible teaches that we are one new man with all those who have come to faith in Christ Jesus. The blood of Christ washes repentant people and makes them one new man. We wholeheartedly reject ‘wokeness,' and believe that God has brought people together based upon the reconciliation that God has achieved for people in Christ Jesus. On July 20, 2021, ‘Christianity and Wokeness: How the Social Justice Movement Is Hijacking the Gospel - and the Way to Stop It' releases.
