Sermon Text: Psalm 37

An increasingly common fancy in modern society suggests that self-love is right. Statements such as, “I know my worth,” or even something that proposes the term itself like, “I am focusing on loving myself,” are seemingly prevalent. The idea, while alluring, however, does not reflect the gospel of Jesus Christ. In fact, such a concept is antithetical to the gospel and should be avoided by Christians. A rebuttal might ask, “Does not Christ want us to love ourselves? Is not self-love merely viewing ourselves the way God views us?” While sincere questions, the gospel message answers such contentions with stark and often difficult truth: truthful in that the gospel realizes humanity's dire state and difficult because such a realization demands justice, which certainly is not the mercy of God (except that his wrath was poured on his Son Jesus Christ); thus, God's love, mercy, and grace are consummately underserved for anyone.[1] To appropriately analyze the absolute incorrect perpetuation of self-love, one must consider the opposing views which subsist in society: 1) the worldly idea of self-love and 2) what should be considered Christ-honoring love,[2] as the two offer diametrically competing concepts; yet, the two concepts are not both right, for only Christ-honoring love permeates the gospel message. The world's idea of self-love, however, offers only deadlocks and destruction. Human nature enjoys being in control and struggles with the truth that a loving God is also just so reality is that he would be unequivocally right in punishing every single radically depraved person (i.e., everyone) in utter and eternal torment. To conclude such a truth, both concepts should be considered: self-love and Christ-honoring love. [1] Even suggestions that a loving God would not send an innocent person to hell falls short because such a person does not exist, and the gospel message teaches and realizes this truth. [2] It should be noted that the opposite of self-love is not low self-esteem, which is itself selfish and self-centered. Rather, Christ-honoring love understands the twofold reality of humanity's utter and debased depravity and the unmerited mercy of God; additionally, Christ-honoring love chooses to boast not in self but in Christ and understands that the only reason Christians may stand before the Father is the mediation of Christ.

Kaitlyn Jo Smith's interdisciplinary studio practice investigates the socioeconomic impact of emerging technologies on America's working class. Through her work, Smith pays homage to laborers by revealing the ways technology renders invisible the labor that produces it. Informed by her upbringing in rural Ohio, Smith's practice explores the intersections of work and worship, as well as the ways individuals are conditioned into lives of monotony. By combining traditional photographic processes with emerging technologies, she interrogates the authority of algorithms while fostering dialogue around humanity's evolving relationship to labor, automation, and technological progress.Smith's projects have been shown nationally and internationally. She is the 2023 recipient of the Alice C. Cole '42 Fellowship in Studio Art, was longlisted for the 2021 Lumen Prize in Art and Technology (London), and received the College Art Association's Services to Artists Committee Award for her video Lights Out. The previous three episodes leads up to Bahnsen's claim that presuppositional apologetics is the only way to do apologetics. It's the best tool to show the split between Christianity and every other viewpoint. And the best part, it's biblical and it is found in the Christian message itself.

Bahnsen now moves to encouraging the Christian to engage in an apologetic method that attack worldview foundations first and foremost. There's nothing wrong in knowing the positive case for Christianity but when it comes to how one approaches proof and truth, why give up so much of your position to try and achieve a neutral starting point - it's not possible to have and it's not biblical to take.

Continuing Bahnsen's lecture on pushing the antithesis, we see Bahnsen make the case for a pushing the antithesis apologetics and provides the repercussions as seen in real, published literature on what happens if we give up that division between the Christian worldview and the non-Christian worldview.

We now cover a lecture by Greg Bahnsen included in our book that encourages the Christian antithesis to be pushed when comparing our lives to those of the world and also in our apologetics. Here Bahnsen shows the Van Tillian origin of this idea in apologetics but shows the presence of it from Genesis all the way through the Old and New Testament.

Shame the Antithesis of Grace (Part 1) by Dr. Cindy Johnson

In this episode, Will Wilson, CEO and co-founder of Antithesis, explores Deterministic Simulation Testing (DST) with host Sriram Panyam. Wilson was part of the pioneering team at FoundationDB that developed this revolutionary testing approach, which was later acquired by Apple in 2015. After seeing that even sophisticated organizations lacked robust testing for distributed systems, Wilson co-founded Antithesis in 2018 to make DST commercially available. Deterministic simulation testing runs software in a fully controlled, simulated environment in which all sources of non-determinism are eliminated or controlled. Unlike traditional testing or chaos engineering, DST operates in a separate environment from production, allowing for aggressive fault injection without risk to live systems. The key breakthrough is perfect reproducibility -- any bug found can be recreated exactly using the same random seed. Antithesis built "The Determinator," a custom deterministic hypervisor that simulates entire software stacks including virtual hardware, networking, and time. The system can compress years of stress testing into shorter timeframes by running simulations faster than wall-clock time. All external interfaces that could introduce non-determinism (network calls, disk I/O, system time) are mocked or controlled by the simulator. The approach has proven effective with major organizations including MongoDB, Palantir, and Ethereum. For Ethereum's critical "Merge" upgrade in 2022, Antithesis found and helped fix several serious bugs that could have been catastrophic for the live network. The platform typically finds bugs that traditional testing methods miss entirely -- such as those arising from rare race conditions, complex timing issues, and unexpected system interactions.
