Ep 448 - Space – The Final Food Frontier Guest: Prof. Mike Dixon By Stuart McNish Captain James T. Kirk starts “Star Trek” by saying, “Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore new worlds; to seek out new life and civilizations; to boldly go where no one has gone before!” Five years is a long time and packing five years of food would be impossible. While the writers of the series dealt with the production of food in a variety of ways – everything from coloured cubes to a protein resequencer that could replicate certain foods and an onboard hydroponic greenhouse to grow fruits and vegetables. The reality of producing food in space is extremely complex. And if we are planning three and more years in space missions, we need to learn how to grow it on the way and on whichever plant we land. At the University of Guelph, Professor Mike Dixon and a team of researchers have been tackling this challenge for 20 plus years, and Dixon says, “We can grow food – not all of the food we grow here on earth, but we can grow food.” That, he points out, is just the beginning. “Being in space means you have no choice. You have to have a zero environmental footprint – that means zero waste. The waste you produce has to be recycled and put back to work immediately. We can't wait for nature because nature isn't fast enough.” We invited Professor Michael Dixon to join us for a Conversation That Matters about growing food in space and what lessons we can apply to growing climate-smart food here. Sometimes our past informs our future. Often, that connection is unexpected and unpredictable, as was certainly the case for Mike Dixon. Mike was working at Chevron when he began thinking about the idea of transitioning into financial services. When the time finally came to begin his business full-time, Chevron graciously left Mike to handle outplacement for retirees. Through that process, Mike obtained about 40 to 50 clients per week and so began his new career as a financial advisor. Grateful for the opportunity from his former employer, Mike brings intentional gratitude into every aspect of his practice today. He's grateful for the clients who trust him enough to introduce their family members and friends, and he's sure to remind clients of the power gratitude has to transform their lives. In this episode, Mike talks with Steve about how his practice has evolved over the last 30 years, the power of gratitude, how to disagree and offboard gracefully, fostering client trust, and why he hasn't abandoned old-school gestures despite the technology all around us. Key Takeaways [01:41] - An introduction to Mike and Dixon Financial Services. [03:28] - How Mike's career before advising launched his future as a financial advisor. [06:52] - How Mike's team is structured. [09:47] - What an introduction really means to Mike and his business. [12:15] - Why clients trust Mike with referrals. [31:34] - What trends have evolved in Mike's 32-year career and how he has managed to evolve alongside them. [34:46] - What motivates Mike. [35:58] - Where Mike refuses to compromise. Quotes [09:01] - “We work as a team, we don't have individual clients, we just all serve the clients of the firm, and we all work to get to know the clients and it's been a good process.” ~ Mike Dixon [10:39] - “I think it's the greatest compliment that can be given. When an introduction comes, it just means so much to us that somebody would entrust us with either a loved one or a close friend.” ~ Mike Dixon [26:27] - “We want to be as positive or more positive when a client leaves [versus] when they come on. We want them treated at least equally, if not better.” ~ Mike Dixon [33:20] - “Our main focus in the earlier days was thinking we were just about investments, to knowing we're much more than that. The pandemic has been a reminder that our world is not predictable; that most of what happens is beyond our control; and that, if you really want to accomplish your goals, the best you can do is remain self-aware and highly adaptable. For our team at Responsive, it's been a challenging two years trying to keep a vision alive while managing the expectations of those who wanted to be a part of something new at one of the messiest times in human history. In today's podcast conversation, I am pleased to introduce Mike Dixon, a long-time friend and now business partner, who genuinely believes in what we aim to achieve for the nonprofit sector and brings a number of strengths that I admittedly don't have. Despite the myriad of challenges that we have encountered, Michael shares an appreciation for what has been accomplished in the last two years and looks forward to providing leadership to our consulting team in the years ahead. In many ways, today's podcast conversation follows the theme of managing our own expectations and those of others in order create environments where fundraising can thrive. We talked about whether employers are creating unreasonable expectations for their fundraisers that decrease the likelihood of genuine and authentic relationships. We suggest that a large number of today's fundraisers are deliberately avoiding meaningful engagement, not out of fear of rejection or lack of experience, but because such interactions are often accompanied by expectations from boards and bosses that are beyond the fundraisers' control. The oft-cited “culture of metrics” creates the illusion that one can control more than they actually can and compels fundraisers to rely on strategies that avoid rather than advance meaningful engagement. As always, we are especially grateful to our friends at CueBack for sponsoring The Fundraising Talent Podcast. While the water industry is a prime victim of climate change, it is also a source of global carbon emissions. In this episode of Preview of Tomorrow, Mike Lake talks with Mike Dixon about how his company, Synauta, saves 20% of OPEX costs in desalination and water reuse plants, by using supervised machine learning to optimize energy and chemical use for specific conditions. Synauta applies machine learning to account for multiple input and output parameters in the reverse osmosis process, ensuring design standards and mechanical limitations are met, while using less energy, optimizing cleans and maintaining water quality and production. The urban water cycle must reduce its carbon footprint, by applying technologies to gain process efficiencies.Support the show

Mike Dixon is a force of nature. He has created an amazing situation in Tucson as a transplant from Washington state. Mike is one of few people in the world working in the world of lathe cuts. If you don't know what that is, then this episode will catch you up to speed. And by speed, I mean we will cover all moods during the show going from 33 to 45 to 78 rpm(really powerful moments). He is also owner and operator of PIAPTK (People In A Position To Know Records) where he has released hundreds of fantastic albums, singles and more from highly acclaimed artists. www.instagram.com/mikedixontucson www.piaptk.limitedrun.com www.mobilevinylrecorders.com www.lathecuts.com www.patreon.com/bradfordtrojan
Mike Dixon is a worship leader, recording artist, and a Grammy-nominated songwriter. Mike comes from an athletic family and is 6 foot 5 inches. He seemed destined for sports, but after attending a music clinic at his local church, it was clear that music was his calling. Mike is passionate about leading worship, and he educates us on what it really means to lead in worship. His songwriting is vulnerable, which admittedly causes him to wrestle with God, but that’s what makes his lyrics so powerful. Join us as we talk to him about what it means to be committed to calling even at your own expense. Check out his latest songwriting venture: The Sustainer -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEsp8P6Aod0Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/ptngwolo)
The Rational View episode 39 is a Cool Stuff interview with Prof. Mike Dixon, exploring the challenges of building artificial ecosystems in space habitats for sustainable life support. Dr. Mike Dixon is a Professor in the School of Environmental Sciences and Director of the Controlled Environment Systems Research Facility (CESRF), University of Guelph. He served as Chair of the Department of Environmental Biology from 2003-2008. Prof. Dixon joined the University as a NSERC University Research Fellow after earning his PhD from Edinburgh University in Scotland and holding a post-doctoral position at the University of Toronto. As project leader for the Canadian research team investigating the contributions of plants to life support in space, Prof. Dixon formed the Space and Advanced Life Support Agriculture (SALSA) program at the University of Guelph. This program currently represents Canada's main contribution to the international space science objectives in biological life support and collaborates with NASA and the Canadian and European Space Agencies. Professor Dixon's CESRF is among the world's leading research venues for technology developments and research dedicated to studying plant and microbial interactions in advanced life support systems. The technical “pull” of space exploration has aided the development of a wide range of technologies that have spun off into applications in terrestrial agri-food sectors and most notably the phyto-pharmaceutical sector in recent years. #05 Mike Dixon is an entrepreneur and a leader who much like Jeremy has spent a lot of time being misunderstood. Today we talk about ways to better communicate as a visionary(someone who often operates in the future) as well as helpful tips and insights on how to communicate with visionaries. This is a good episode for those who feel disconnected from visionaries and "future" thinkers.
If you collect vinyl, you understand the power of tangible, physical media. You know the thrill of finding a new record, staring at the cover art, pouring through the liner notes, and, of course, the disc itself. Holding sound. Looking at the grooves, the labels, the wax. The record is truly a piece of art far beyond the music contained within. There is perhaps no one who practices this craft with more skill and dedication than Michael Dixon. Based out of Tucson, Arizona, Mike expands the boundaries of vinyl art through creativity, collaboration, and innovation. He views a vinyl record as a blank canvas which will hold unique one-of-a-kind artifacts that are both beautiful and will play music for perpetuity. Drawing from lifelong loves of education, records, outsider art, and re-purposing junk, Mike uses 1940s record cutting lathe machines to handcraft sonic objects. He has made records out of up-cycled plexiglass, laser discs, picnic plates, cd-rs (playable on both turntable and standard CD player), mirrors, place mats, x-rays, and even 90% cacao chocolate. He has made records that use multiple sides, holes, groove patterns, locked grooves, and overlapping or concentric circles. He has made records that are absurdly entertaining and visually stunning. On top of this, he runs a record label called People In a Position to Know that focuses on putting out records by artists that he believes in and records that are as individual as the bands. He has made ultra-limited releases for a huge range of big name indie artists like The Flaming Lips, Dr Dog, Ariel Pink, Mike Watt, the Microphones, and Grandaddy as well as making essential music available to fans from bands that you should know like The Graves, Sugar Candy Mountain, and Golden Boots. He has also put out music by several of this podcast's favorite artists including Wooden Wand, Simon Joyner, and Luna. Oh and when he's not doing that, he does short run lathe cuts for bands, fixes lathe machines, is a DJ specializing in private press and bizarro honky tonk, and, coolest of all, educates kids at schools and libraries about the science behind sound and the evolution of sound recording. We were fortunate enough to spend some time with Mike talking about his passion and his art as well as some mutual interests. We strongly encourage you to check out his process and his products by visiting his websites, michaeldixonvinylart.com and piaptk.com. We guarantee you will find incredible unique music and records that you cannot find anywhere else. Now, it is another chapter in our continuing series of interviewing people who are truly vital to the vinyl record industry and the fans of vinyl records all over the world. What is Worship Leading? How do I overcome the looks of the people? How can you remain fresh on a consistent basis?
Hello everyone welcome to Reaching Out Radio where we are reaching out to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ. On the show tonight we have an amazing artist joining us! Bio When the Holy Spirit teams up with hip hop, it makes for a dynamic collaboration of Gospel Rap; a process RIFICA refers to as “the Holy Spirit downloading the lyrics to his brain.” This partnership in music attracts all ages of believers and non-believers the same. RIFICA showcases this spiritual encounter in each of his albums: Motivation, The Standard, and The Death of Me mix tapes. His unique style of artistry is both versatile and nonconforming. Known for his interactive “line dance” tracks, RIFICA creates a high energy atmosphere that would make anyone get up and join. Gospel Step, Gospel Wobble, and The Righteous Shuffle, are major hits in the Christian community and embrace the concept that you can have fun in the Lord, a great time in church, and that it's exciting to be in Christ. These words RIFICA tells his supporters as he travels throughout Texas and other shows spanning across Denver , CO, Baton Rouge , LA and Myrtle Beach, SC. Prior to recording his first album, RIFICA would feature on various artist songs, with his first being with Mic D and Disciples of Prophecy on the DOP 2k3 album. Later, the successful relationship would serve as a positive force of change. After hearing from Mic D, and the industry response to his original name, MastaBalla, it was suggested he choose a different alias. In that moment God brought the name to remembrance and it's meaning to the acronym RIFICA (Righteous In Faith InCrease Abundantly). This modification would eventually develop RIFICA's brand and shape him into the artist he is today. Since then Rif , is proud to have worked with artists such as Educator, Immortal, Poetic Prophet, BSloan and Mike Dixon. When you hear the sounds in his albums, everything from the beat to the lyrics, expect to hear real life applications.

On Episode 11 of the ODU Wrestling Monarch Matcast, we break down why the Monarchs have been so consistent in their last five dual wins, including the win at the Virginia Duals over Edinboro. Coach Mike Dixon focuses on the seniors who will be wrestling in their last home match at the Ted Constant Convocation Center on February 6 as the Monarchs host N.C. State at 7:30 p.m. We'll recap some of the key wins against Ohio and the stretch run with four conference road duals to close out the regular season. Of note, the N.C. State match has a bit of alumni flavor as N.C. State 184-pounder Nicky Hall is the son of 1995 ODU All-American heavyweight and former assistant coach Nick Hall.
