It's time for Casual Trek and oh no… Earth's been infiltrated by aliens! Thanks to the generosity of Ko-Fi donor Cheryl, we're talking about aliens on Earth. We've got a Chakotay episode of DS9 where he might well bone down with a Species 8472. Also what the fuck is Pon'Far night? Then we get decidedly un-cosy as Enterprise embraces the War on Terror era derangements of America and suffers from a bit of the old xenophobia just in time for our ship to get home. We do another revisit of a cult favorite TV show with new guests and for this themed week, it was only appropriate to highlight another military scifi mystery epic. Space: Above & Beyond still has loyal followers and it still rediscovered along with other cancelled favorites like Firefly, Dark Matter, Raised by Wolves, The Dead Zone show and Dark Angel! We decided to be the first podcast to dissect some of the other tropes, fandom, X-Files connections (ala it was by the same creators so of course it had easter eggs!) and why it still finds an audience for today's SciFi buffs who are more into Stargate, The Expanse, Babylon 5, Star Trek and even the new Battlestar Galactica. Which of the books which are stand-alone are overall worth a buy and which ones are just written adaptations of select episodes? Are the comic books well drawn or also more of a side curiosity? Where can you find these to purchase without busting your wallet big time? Find out tonight! Pam Murphy, Will Hines, and Luka Jones join Matt Besser for scenes about a holo-companion, communal apartment events, and a football coach with a mission to save the American sitcom. Plus, pickleball passions run high, and they revisit the classic sci-fi series Space: Above and Beyond.
Tread Perilously's summer Grab Bag month continues with its first look back at Space: Above and Beyond -- an episode called "Level of Necessity." When an operation on planet Daedelus ends with heavy casualties, Lt. Colonel McQueen notes Damphousse's "anomalous intuition" for saving the 58th Squadron. The notation in his mission report attracts the attention of Colonel Matthew Burke, chief of the largely-discredited Psy-Ops department. He's convinced Damphousse's intuition is the proof of precognitive abilities he's been looking for and arranges for the squad to return to Daedelus for a hit-and-run mission. Will putting the grunt in danger unlock the secret powers of her mind? And will anyone survive their fifth trip to the alien-controlled world? Erik and Justin can't get over the episode's notion that lovable character actor Richard Kind can play a heavy. The pair also recall the monthly Comic Book & Science-Fiction Convention at the Shrine Auditorium. Erik's doppelganger ends up part of the discussion. The cast of Space: Above and Beyond prove to be knock-offs, off-brands, and potentially the greatest problem with the series as a whole. Erik and Justin attempt to recast Colonel Matthew Burke. Dan O'Bannon makes another unexpected appearance and Giovanni Ribisi becomes a psychic friend.

The guys open up with some fun technical difficulties. Then they get into the subject of Sci-Fi vacations. They try desperately to find some examples such as Futurama, Battlestar Galactica, Space: Above and Beyond, which is fine. But they can't think of anything in Star Wars. Then McKay talks about how he wants to try his father's home made pizza recipe and they wax on about different pizza's they loved and how they inadvertently grew up on Greek Pizza, not Italian. Then they talk about Star Trek, the formation of Risa, and how it was used in multiple episodes.

Things might be a bit dark right now but the first show of 2021 opens with a bit of a laugh as we do our first Quiz section. This episode's theme for the quiz is Licensed RPGs - George has got a list that includes some genuine games and some balderdash books, but can Ailsa tell them apart? Feel free to play along, and possibly bemoan the games that shouldn't exist but do and vice versa. After that frivolity it's time for another Elevator Pitch, with small press game Umläut: Game of Metal that lets you play out your dream of being in a heavy metal band. Even stranger, it does it with a GM-less system from a boxing game. Ailsa takes some time to talk about her love of music while George mostly just tries to find excuses to talk about Space: Above and Beyond again. All this and the usual mixture of insanity including an advert that offers you the solution to the problem of over-knowledgeable adventurers easily outmatching your dungeon's boss monster. In today's episode, The Mandalorian Season Finale, "The Rescue"! Are Filoni and Favreau playing baseball, 'cause they knock it out of the park. Was Luke a badass all along, or did he take lessons? Do Dark Troopers have a fatal design flaw? The Rebels are FINALLY referred to as "terrorists". Why bother using a key when Jedi can rip the door off the hinges? The "Is Boba really a Mandalorian?" question is finally answered. Space: Above and Beyond? WTF? How did a Fox get into the podcast? Some alternative Mando endings. Where was Grogu during the period of the First Order?

In this week’s episode Stuart & Zack were delighted to be able to talk to actor, filmmaker, playwright, poet, singer/songwriter and yoga teacher, James Morrison. James is an extremely well known actor with a significant body of work and talks about his role as Bill Buchanan in 24, as well as his appearance in the cult sci-fi series ‘Space: Above & Beyond’ and Twin Peaks: The Return. In addition there’s a great deal of chat about his fabulous feature documentary ‘Showing Up’, which details the accounts of actor’s and their experiences of auditions. If all that wasn’t enough we talk about Bill’s other creative passions, theatre and making music. After Eight Show - Music That You Just Don't Hear Anywhere Else!
We had wardrobes full of #NewMusic in our playlist! An eclectic mix of original, intelligent, melodic, grown-up songs - #electronic, #rnb, #jazz, #blues and #acoustic. And mostly from artists who you have not heard of - yet! Think 'next series of Jools' - that's the kind of artists that we play. Mick Flannery's song 'Run A Mile' is a very moving one and has been used in a campaign to support victims of domestic violence - particularly during this pandemic. We gave out details of how to donate to support victims in Ireland, the USA and the UK. In 2001, Gillian Welch released her song Ruination Day Part 2 which was about 3 momentous events in American history which all occurred on April 14th. They were the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the Titanic disaster and the Black Sunday dust storm of 1935. Lauren O'Connell has just released a brilliant cover version of the song which will be on her forthcoming album but, in the meantime, we played it as our Luvva Cover feature in our show. Synopsis: In which Londo is visited by his three wives, and Talia is visited by yet another mysterious man from her past. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0517693/?ref_=ttfc_fc_tthttp://www.midwinter.com/lurk/countries/us/guide/029.html Peter David: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_David I've always felt like I should like his stuff but for whatever reason it never clicked for me. The drawbacks of watching the episodes in broadcast order strike again. We comment about how abrupt Talia's mistrust of the Psi Corps seems in this episode, but next week's show, “A Race Through Dark Places”, was supposed to come before “Soul Mates,” and that one DEFINITELY sets up her issues with the Corps. The shows that were canceled before their time This week we’re back and we’re talking about our favorite shows that were taken from us way too early. Of course Firefly made the list, but can you guess what else did? As promised, the Perfect Stranger Things video We also cover a myriad of other things, but if you’re wondering why we think Firefly and other good series either went downhill or got canceled after a quick start, we have our theories. Shownotes and Links Bill Peter Pan Pirate Porn Firefly is amazing We missed quite a few shows. Pushing Daisies, Dead Like Me, Better Off Ted, Powerless, Space Above and Beyond, etc.
Synopsis: In which Commander Sinclair's past bad decisions catch up to him as an Earthforce colonel with a score to settle and his pet telepath come to the station. We've raved about Space: Above and Beyond before but seriously, it's one of the better seasons of television that either of us have ever seen. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space:_Above_and_BeyondThere are even some interesting connections to the other big Fox genre shows of the time, X-Files and Millennium, suggesting they shared a universe (along with the apparently completely unavailable Strange Luck). Here's a great clip of Col. McQueen for those of you unfamiliar with the show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2p5KOq6Ekwg(This clip won't mean much to anyone not familiar with Space:Above and Beyond, but Wang impersonating Col. McQueen is still just amazing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0hsvt4Nbko)We're going to assume that Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway and Adama are all familiar to you.The Trolley and the Fat Man - a classic thought experiment about making tough choices when there are no good options. Kirk would have probably cheated and rigged the trolley to tip over before the switch. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolley_problem“The Immunity Syndrome” - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Immunity_Syndrome_(Star_Trek:_The_Original_Series)Commodore Matthew “There is no third planet!” Decker - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Doomsday_Machine_(Star_Trek:_The_Original_Series)In the Space:Above and Beyond episode “Sugar Dirt” Colonel McQueen and the USS Saratoga are forced to abandon a squadron of marines planetside for months, without any promise of rescue (except that this is a serialized American TV show so we know the main characters will get out). It is positively harrowing.Captain Avatar of Star Blazers. Best. Captain. Tim and Summer enjoy a chat with renowned character actor Tucker Smallwood, who played Mr David Endawi in the S3 episode "Matters of Honor", and Commodore Glen Van Ross in Space: Above and Beyond. Tucker talks about war as used in science fiction and his being a fan of science fiction literature growing up, and how his experience as an infantry commander in Vietnam informed his work and contributions to Space: Above and Beyond. He also talks about studying acting after being severely wounded, about struggling with and working through PTSD years after the fact, and more. Source
After there jovial interludes and seasonable break the DW boys tackle Space Above and Beyond a show that perhaps unfairly got canned in it's first season and which provides a useful jump off point to look at Marines in Science Fiction. Wonder at how often Matt can say 'Hard Asses', astound at Kehaars pet obesssions coming to the fore and ponder the many examples of Marines in science fiction they praise and diss in equal measure. On the way we call by Iwo Jima, Starship Troopers, Stormtroopers, Star Trek, Aliens, and much much war. We perhaps don't go enough into expeditionary warfare but the episode takes a turn where we look at the Marine as a trop (ooo hark at us)e in SF and in broader fiction too. They also consider SAAB's legacy for shows like Galacitca and SGU and consider some it's weaknesses Hope you enjoy it.

Episode #15 The Sonic Society This week we return once again to the next exciting installment of the Arbiter Chronicles from Prometheus Theater. One of the enduring ideas of space that has been explored so readily in television shows like Star Trek, Firefly, Space Above and Beyond, and Babylon 5 among others is the concept of isolation. Like great adventurers of the past, heroes in space will not have the opportunity to turn to the powerful resources of a city, country, or empire to solve problems that arise. This leaves room for the ingenious, the clever, and the wiley. Surviving in space requires a quick understanding of a situation when it arises and the best solution with the least amount of depleted resources in the task. The best Captains in space are those who inspire courage in their fellows and answers to the most complex solutions. Whether they are Kirk, Adama, Reynolds or Atal. After our feature in this meeting we'll listen to a segment from Crazy Dog Audio on the process of writing radio drama, and of course end with the second last episode of Dream Realm Enterprise's Robots of the Company.
