Tune in as we begin by going over 1st round draft rankings (who will Steve Yzerman have available for the Detroit Red Wings at 13th overall?) from both Brad Krysko and newest WWP contributor, "LGRWProspects" (Zak Egan - check out his full rankings here: https://www.wingedwheelpodcast.com/post/2025-nhl-draft-rankings) - rankings listed below. (3:35) We then discuss whether it's better for Yzerman to trade the 13th overall pick to move up or get help on forward for Larkin, Raymond, DeBrincat, Kasper, and Kane, or on defense to aid Seider, Edvinsson, Sandin Pellikka, and Johansson (18:15). After that, Vladimir Tarasenko's name being on the trade block, an update on Dmitri Buchelnikov, and more goaltending depth behind Sebastian Cossa and Trey Augustine added to the system (25:50). fWotD Episode 2957: Illusion of Kate Moss Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 9 June 2025, is Illusion of Kate Moss. The illusion of Kate Moss is an art piece first shown at the conclusion of the Alexander McQueen runway show The Widows of Culloden (Autumn/Winter 2006). It consists of a short film of English model Kate Moss dancing slowly while wearing a long, billowing gown of white chiffon, projected life-size within a glass pyramid in the centre of the show's catwalk. Although sometimes referred to as a hologram, the illusion was made using a 19th-century theatre technique called Pepper's ghost.McQueen conceived the illusion as a gesture of support for Moss; she was a close friend of his and was embroiled in a drug-related scandal at the time of the Widows show. It is regarded by many critics as the highlight of the Widows runway show, and it has been the subject of a great deal of academic analysis, particularly as a wedding dress and as a memento mori. The illusion appeared in both versions of Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, a retrospective exhibition of McQueen's designs. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:43 UTC on Monday, 9 June 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Illusion of Kate Moss on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Geraint.
Steve McQueen is one of Britain's most acclaimed filmmakers and artists. He is the recipient of the Academy Award for Best Picture, two BAFTA Awards, the Caméra d'Or, a Golden Globe, and the Turner Prize. McQueen's work includes his first feature-length film Hunger about Bobby Sands and the 1981 Irish hunger strike, the Oscar-winning 12 Years a Slave, the BBC anthology Small Axe, and his most recent film Blitz. In April 2025 McQueen joined us live on the Intelligence Squared stage to discuss the themes of his new book Resistance. Accompanied by a major exhibition of the same name at Turner Contemporary, Resistance is a landmark collection of photographs and essays charting a century of British activism. Speaking alongside author Gary Younge, McQueen explored the power of collective action and uncover the often-overlooked stories of individuals who have been instrumental in forming modern Britain. McQueen discussed how acts of resistance have shaped Britain and the powerful role of photography as a catalyst for change. From the radical suffrage movement in 1903 through key moments including the Battle of Cable Street, the Black People's Day of Action, Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp and the Miners' Strike; onto protests against environmental destruction, struggles for LGBTQ+ and disability rights; and the largest protest in Britain's history: the march against the War in Iraq in 2003. ----- If you'd like to become a Member and get access to all our full ad free conversations, plus all of our Members-only content, just visit intelligencesquared.com/membership to find out more. Rajah Adriana McQueen, a 27-year-old mother of two from Cleveland, Ohio, disappeared on June 26, 2021. She was last seen around 7:30 a.m. at a gas station near East 131st Street and Harvard Avenue, entering the passenger side of her silver and black 2018 Nissan Sentra, which was being driven by a man known to her family. Surveillance footage later that morning captured her vehicle being driven by someone else. Rajah was studying music, deeply involved in her church community, and was described as a loving mother. To this day, Rajah's case remains cold despite search warrants, interviews, and intense searches. — Rajah Adriana McQueen, de 27 años y madre de dos hijos, de Cleveland, Ohio, desapareció el 26 de junio de 2021. We have another busy day to get through all the Philadelphia Flyers news and rumors floating around.First, Noah Cates is Danny Briere's most recent piece of business, signing an extension today for 4 years with a $4 million AAV.Also, Roger McQueen has said he's 10/10 healthy following a misdiagnosis of his back injury. If the 6-5 center prospect is truly 100%, can the Flyers afford to pass on him if available at #6?There's also Charlie's first Mock Draft, a Brent Flahr Q&A in the Inquirer, and more!

This week I'm recommending four crime films from the 1970s and early 80s. Each one centers on a planned job, bank heists, robberies, break-ins, and none of them go smoothly. The tone across these films is lean, serious, and focused on the people involved more than the action. There's a lot of attention to detail, and they hold up well.Charley Varrick (1973) Directed by Don Siegel. Walter Matthau plays a bank robber who ends up in the crosshairs of something bigger than expected. Matthau had just done more comedic work at the time, so this role stood out. Joe Don Baker plays a contract killer hired to clean things up. Lalo Schifrin did the score, which is sharp and suits the pace. It was based on the novel The Looters by John Reese. The Anderson Tapes (1971)Directed by Sidney Lumet. Sean Connery is a thief planning to rob an entire apartment building. The film stands out for how it handles surveillance. Almost every major character is being watched by police, by private groups, by government agencies. This was Christopher Walken's first film. The music is by Quincy Jones, and it's more experimental than you'd expect.Thief (1981) Michael Mann's first feature film. James Caan plays a professional safecracker who wants to get out after one last job. Mann used real tools and brought in actual former thieves to advise on the technical side. The film has a cold, exact feel. The soundtrack is by Tangerine Dream. It's shot in Chicago and uses the city well without overdoing it.The Getaway (1972) Directed by Sam Peckinpah. Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw star as a couple on the run after a robbery. The script was written by Walter Hill and based on a novel by Jim Thompson. The film was a big success when it came out and mixes action with slower moments of tension. McQueen did many of his own stunts. It's one of the more polished crime films of its time. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. This is a public episode. If the Western is the godfather of American cinema, then the crime film is its son. With tough guys, shootouts, and explorations of morality, these movies capture the seedy underbelly of a post-war urban world. So, for today's video, I'll be ranking a list of crime films chosen by my producer. Hot takes are bound to happen. - - - Today's Sponsor: Helix Sleep - Go to https://helixsleep.com/klavan to get 27% Off Sitewide + Free Bedding Bundle (Sheet Set and Mattress Protector) with any Luxe or Elite Mattress Order.

What a Merry-Go-Round Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 7 April 2025 is What a Merry-Go-Round.What a Merry-Go-Round is the eighteenth collection by British fashion designer Alexander McQueen, made for the Autumn/Winter 2001 season of his fashion house Alexander McQueen. The collection drew on imagery of clowns and carnivals, inspired by McQueen's feelings about childhood and his experiences in the fashion industry. The designs were influenced by military chic, cinema such as Nosferatu (1922) and Cabaret (1972), 1920s flapper fashion, and the French Revolution. The palette comprised dark colours complemented with neutrals and muted greens. The show marked the first appearance of the skull motif that became a signature of the brand. The collection's runway show was staged on 21 February 2001 at the Gatliff Road Warehouse in London, as part of London Fashion Week. It was McQueen's final show in London; all his future collections were presented in Paris. Sixty-two looks were presented in the main runway show, with at least six more in the finale. The show was staged in a dark room with a carousel at the centre. During the finale, the lights came up to reveal piles of discarded childhood bric-à-brac at the rear of the stage, while models dressed as evil clowns cavorted around the stage, posing in their eveningwear.Critical response to the collection was generally positive, and it has attracted some academic analysis for the theme and messaging. Like McQueen's previous show Voss (Spring/Summer 2001), Merry-Go-Round served as a critique of the fashion industry, which he sometimes described as toxic and suffocating. It contained elements that several authors have taken as references to French luxury goods conglomerate LVMH and its management, with whom McQueen had a turbulent relationship. Ensembles from Merry-Go-Round have appeared in exhibitions such as the McQueen retrospective Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:13 UTC on Monday, 7 April 2025.For the full current version of the article, see What a Merry-Go-Round on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Kajal.

I recently had the privilege of speaking with Dr. Paddy McQueen from Swansea University to discuss a fascinating paper he had authored exploring the ethical dilemmas of supporting talented children. Our conversation explored the philosophical questions about childhood, talent development, and the responsibilities we have as parents, coaches and policy makers. Paddy introduced me to three different views of childhood - 'the sapling view' (seeing childhood merely as preparation for adulthood), 'the fruit view' (seeing childhood as superior to adulthood), and 'the caterpillar view' (seeing childhood and adulthood as distinctly valuable stages). These perspectives create different frameworks for thinking about how we should approach the sport experience for children. We discussed the tension between prioritising intrinsic childhood goods like free play, fun and social connection, versus instrumental goods that prepare children for adult success. The conversation revealed how deeply our cultural mindset about childhood affects the decisions we make in youth sports—often leading to an industrialised approach that sacrifices childhood experiences for potential future achievements that statistically few will attain. My three key takeaways from the conversation:How we view childhood fundamentally shapes our approach to talent development—each perspective (sapling, fruit, or caterpillar) leads to different choices. The sacrifices required for "talent maximisation" often undermine intrinsic childhood goods that cannot be recovered later in life.Playful, enjoyable sporting experiences may actually be more effective for skill development than highly structured, adult-centric training methods. If you found these ideas thought-provoking, I invite you to join my learning group called 'The Guild of Ecological Explorers' by heading to www.thetalentequation.co.uk and clicking on the 'join a learning group' button. There you'll connect with others who are exploring these connections between philosophy, psychology, and sports developmentBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-talent-equation-podcast--2186775/support.

On this week's show, Slate experts June Thomas (author of A Place of Our Own: Six Spaces That Shaped Queer Women's Culture) and Dan Kois (author of Hampton Heights: One Harrowing Night in the Most Haunted Neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) fill in for Dana and Julia. First, the trio tackles Blitz, director Steve McQueen's new film about the German bombings of London during World War II, which stars Saoirse Ronan, Harris Dickinson, and randomly, Paul Weller. For a McQueen movie, it's quite traditional – predictable plot beats, an easy to understand moral viewpoint – but as a piece of culture, does it work? Is the film informative and incredibly ambitious? Or didactic and boring? Then, the panel unravels HBO's Get Millie Black, a British crime drama set in Kingston, Jamaica. Created by Marlon James, the five-part detective series delivers a good, old-fashioned mystery (there's corruption! Familial complications! Rich queer narratives! And way too much voiceover!) that reveals itself slowly, like peeling back the layers of an onion. Finally, can a “vibe” be copyrighted, in a world built on copying? The hosts pour over “Bad Influence,” a reported piece by The Verge about the groundbreaking legal case between two lifestyle influencers that has the potential to radically alter the online commerce industry. In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel discusses movie credits and debates the merits of sitting through them. We are still taking questions for our annual call-in show!
