*Special thanks to Sunset Studios, where everyone is a VIP, for providing us with this gorgeous filming location* Delighted to be joined by the Lauren LeFranc, the visionary showrunner and executive producer of HBO's THE PENGUIN, the gritty spin-off from Matt Reeves' THE BATMAN. Her unique ability to blend innovative narratives with visual storytelling contributed to the series' critical success, achieving a 94% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and attracting 10.4 million viewers within its first 11 days. A television veteran, her body of work also includes credits on AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D., HEMLOCK GROVE, IMPULSE and CHUCK. I may have spent the hour fangirling a little too hard, not sure, but our meet-cute story is pretty epic. Tune in as we discuss career serendipity, what makes an exceptional producer, and how she made us all deeply care about Gotham's devil, Oswald. xx CG SUBSCRIBE --> https://aop.beehiiv.com/ JOIN PATREON --> www.patreon.com/angleonproducers CAROLINA'S IG --> https://instagram.com/carolinagroppa AOP IG --> https://instagram.com/angleonproducers TIKTOK --> https://www.tiktok.com/@carolina_groppa LINKEDIN -->: https://www.linkedin.com/in/carolina-groppa-2174bb65/

Lauren LeFranc is the showrunner of Max's highly-anticipated limited series THE PENGUIN. With LeFranc's assured creative voice as its throughline, the show is a radical departure from what we've come to expect from comic book stories, embracing a daytime noir tone and aesthetic akin to crime dramas like THE SOPRANOS. Prior to THE PENGUIN, LeFranc most notably ran YouTube Premium's IMPULSE. As a television veteran, her body of work also includes credits on AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D., HEMLOCK GROVE, and CHUCK. In her latest work, THE PENGUIN, the series follows Oswald “Oz” Cobb's quest for control in Gotham City. With the city in peril following the seawall's collapse, Oz seeks to fill the power vacuum left by the death of Carmine Falcone and finally give his mother Francis the life he's always promised. But first, Oz must confront his enemies, including Carmine's children, Sofia Falcone and Alberto Falcone; the Maroni family, led by their imprisoned patriarch, Salvatore Maroni; and Oz's own demoralizing reputation as “The Penguin.” In this interview, we talk about how she got attached to THE PENGUIN, working with Colin Farrell and Matt Reeves, the portrayal of Oz as a complex and empathetic villain, the research and development involved in the show, and much more. Welcome to Talking Paragraphs, the podcast that is so incoherent half of the people involved don't remember its name. Topics that we at least intended to discuss: The meaning of "faff" and why you should embrace it. Pete Davidson vs. Cocaine Bear Phone answer etiquette for clones. A lot of random memories from a college party nearly 30 years ago. A story of stolen goats in Winterset in 1993. Daniel P. Finney and Paul Russell have been friends for 30 years. Holly Deveaux (born in Toronto, Ontario) is a Canadian actress with documentary film-maker parents. She was determined to be an actor since a very young age, and at thirteen finally began auditioning and securing roles. Throughout high school, Deveaux worked on a series of projects. 'Victoria Day' was her first leading film role, premiering at Sundance Film Festival. Following that, she secured the lead role of the Family Channel TV Show 'Baxter'. Deveaux then went on to have leading roles in series such as Netflix's 'Hemlock Grove', CTV's 'Spun Out', HBO's 'Less than Kind', and many more. Her next independent film, 'Big Muddy', premiered to positive reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival. Her performance in the Emmy-nominated television film 'The Phantoms' garnered praise from The Globe and Mail's John Doyle, who remarked: "Outstanding is Deveaux as Tess, the most complex and troubled of the teenagers. Deveaux (last seen in Less Than Kind) is luminous, her pale face subtly registering every hurt, every worry and every insult that comes her way..." Since then, Deveaux has secured a series of roles and continues to work in Canada and the US, most recently on CBS's 'Macgyver' and Hulu's 'Future Man', where she played the role of Marilyn Monroe. Join Dave and Wayne for genre television show news, a glimpse into what the hosts are currently watching, commentary and analysis of Hemlock Grove, and our listener feedback. This week on the SciFi TV Rewatch podcast we discuss S01E04 of Hemlock Grove and hone in on the multiple story arcs that are presented. Most intriguing are Olivia's eye drops and a foreboding comment about Shelley. However, it's Dr. Chasseur's interactions with the sheriff that reminds us of their great chemistry. In our What We're Watching segment, Wayne once again gets drawn in by the Netflix series Money Heist. Dave keeps listeners up to date with Doctor Who and the upcoming specials that will mark the end of Jodie Whittaker's run as the Doctor. In Listener Feedback, Fred from the Netherlands suggests doubling up on Hemlock Grove episodes next year. Nathan Barr, who began his career with Hans Zimmer, has composed music for more than 30 feature films in addition to his television experience. Has scored all seven seasons of HBO's Emmy-winning series, TRUE BLOOD. He has worked with Alan Ball, gore-horror master Eli Roth, and many other highly respected directors. Roth and Barr have collaborated on HEMLOCK GROVE and five films: GRINDHOUSE, HOSTEL, HOSTEL 2, CABIN FEVER, THE LAST EXORCISM. In one of Nathan Barr's most recent projects, the composer reteams with director Eli Roth for the feature film adaption of John Bellair's children's classic, THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS.In the tradition of Amblin classics where fantastical events occur in the most unexpected places, Jack Black and Cate Blanchett star in The House with a Clock in Its Walls, from Amblin Entertainment. The magical adventure tells the spine-tingling tale of 10-year-old Lewis (Owen Vaccaro) who goes to live with his uncle in a creaky old house with a mysterious tick-tocking heart. But his new town's sleepy façade jolts to life with a secret world of warlocks and witches when Lewis accidentally awakens the dead.In this episode, Nathan Barr talks about recording this score in his own new studio, including a 1928 Wurlitzer theater organ he had restored over four years. He talks about how this film became a great showcase for the inclusion his newly restored organ and how this score ended up being his most traditional score to date. While diving into the thematic development for principle characters of Lewis and Jonathan, Barr reveals the challenges of writing a horror-score for an Eli Roth film where children, instead of adults, were the target audience.ANNOTATED TRACKS AND SEGMENTS04:15 - "New Zebedee"08:18 - "Jonathan with Ax"09:48 - "Backyard Magic"11:35 - "Raising Isaac"14:18 - "Nickolodeon"18:18 - "Automotans Attack"19:12 - "Insect Book"SOUNDTRACKThe original soundtrack was release on September 21, 2018 by Back Lot Music. Fourth of July Creek (Ecco) Smith Henderson, author of one of the most anticipated debut novels of the season, discusses his work with novelist Brian McGreevy (Hemlock Grove). In this shattering and iconic American novel, PEN prize-winning writer, Smith Henderson explores the complexities of freedom, community, grace, suspicion and anarchy, brilliantly depicting our nation's disquieting and violent contradictions. After trying to help Benjamin Pearl, an undernourished, nearly feral eleven-year-old boy living in the Montana wilderness, social worker Pete Snow comes face to face with the boy's profoundly disturbed father, Jeremiah. With courage and caution, Pete slowly earns a measure of trust from this paranoid survivalist itching for a final conflict that will signal the coming End Times. But as Pete's own family spins out of control, Pearl's activities spark the full-blown interest of the F.B.I., putting Pete at the center of a massive manhunt from which no one will emerge unscathed. Praise for Fourth of July Creek: “This book left me awestruck; a stunning debut which reads like the work of a writer at the height of his power…Fourth of July Creek is a masterful achievement and Smith Henderson is certain to end up a household name.”—Philipp Meyer, New York Times bestselling author of The Son “Fourth of July Creek knocked me flat. This gorgeous, full-bodied novel seems to contain all of America at what was, in retrospect, a pivotal moment in its history...Smith Henderson has delivered nothing less than a masterpiece of a novel."—Ben Fountain, author of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk “Fourth of July Creek cannot possibly be Smith Henderson's first book. Its scope is audacious, its range virtuosic, its gaze steady and true. A riveting story written in a seductive and relentlessly authentic rural American vernacular, this is the kind of novel I wish I'd written.”—Claire Vaye Watkins, author of Battleborn “Fourth of July Creek is an astonishing read. The writing is energetic and precise. Henderson has a mastery of scale that allows this particular place and these particular people to illuminate who we are as Americans...I could not recommend this book more highly.”—Kevin Powers, bestselling author of The Yellow Birds “Tremendously satisfying—think Daniel Woodrell's Winter's Bone...or Jimmy McNulty...set...in...another kind of violent American wilderness...[a] mesmerizing accomplishment. I cannot think of a finer first novel; it's hard, in fact, to think of a finer second, third, or fourth one, either.”—Antonya NelsonSmith Henderson was born and raised in western Montana. His family were in the timber industry, ranching, and other trades, but he was the first to go to college, earning a Classics degree. He worked with traumatized children for a few years, and briefly as prison guard. He took writing jobs where he could find them, until he was admitted to the MFA program at the University of Texas. His short fiction has appeared in a variety of journals and been anthologized in the Pushcart Prize Anthology. In 2011 he was the Philip Roth Resident and Bucknell University and won the Emerging Writer Award in Fiction from the PEN Foundation. Brian McGreevy is the author of Hemlock Grove, which was adapted into a Netflix series of the same name. He is also a founding partner of the production company El Jefe, with multiple film and television projects in development. A former James Michener Fellow in fiction at the University of Texas, he currently lives in Los Angeles.
