We continue our series exploring the Trinity. This week, we unpack the importance of understanding God the Spirit
Study session scripture: Romans 8:26-39Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.Study session topics:The Intercession of the Holy Spirit (vv. 26-27) This is an important topic because prayer itself is a confusing subject, as Paul himself concedes in v. 26 -"Likewise" or "In the same way"--connects the Holy Spirit's intercession to earlier context vv. 22-25: our hope in God's promises is strengthened by the Spirit's intercession on our behalfvv. 15-17: the Spirit's aid in prayer is further assurance that we are God's children The problem with prayer--our weakness The Holy Spirit assists us in our weakness in many ways, but here Paul is specifically talking about our ignorance The word "our" is important here--Paul is saying this is a problem for all Christians -"helps"--a hugely insufficient word Greek sunantilambanetai--someone coming alongside another to help bear a heavy burden -Paul transitions to his next and final point in this chapter by giving us both an assurance and an aspiration: the Spirit intercedes for Christians according to the will of God The Spirit translates our desires into requests that fit into the will of God The point of the Christian life is to be increasingly conformed to Christ, so we also should be increasingly petitioning God according to His willThe Practical Outworking of God's Character (vv. 28-39) v. 28 is one of the most well known--and misused--verses in the Bible It is not a platitude for things getting better, rather Paul immediately clarifies that he means all things work together to further sanctify us v. 28 is the thesis of the remainder of the chapter--we can rest assured in our salvation and know that we will be further sanctified due to the One our salvation rests on vv. 29-30 show the roadmap for God's process of saving and sanctifying His people -Foreknowledge -Predestination -Calling -Justification -Glorification In the last section of the chapter, Paul triumphantly, almost defiantly, challenges anyone to overthrow the work of God in salvation by posing 5 questions: Who can be against us? How will He not graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge? Who is to condemn? Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Study session audio: S4 E22: Romans 8:26-39 Download
Many of us might have misconceptions about the Holy Spirit. We may think of Him as an impersonal force, like something out of Star Wars. Or we might assume He is a mere projection of the Father's work in the world. But Scripture tells us that the Holy Spirit is a person, like God the Father or Jesus Christ the Son. He can be grieved and lied to, and He cares deeply about us. This week, Pastor Connor continues our series on the Trinity with a message on the Holy Spirit and His roles in the world. He is the Convicter who shows us our need for a Savior, the Indwelling Presence of God who comforts and helps us, the Transformer who makes us more like Christ, the Advocate who makes our prayers acceptable to God, the Great Giver of spiritual gifts, and the Guarantee of our salvation. Every step of the way, He is a vital participant in how the gospel changes our lives. This week, our hosts continue their discussion on the trinity, some of the talking points were, are we supposed to have all the fruits of the spirit, what will the Holy Spirit's role be after Christ returns, and so many more questions about the Holy Spirit. Oh and tune into the beginning to hear our hosts talk about their close encounters with fire.Got questions about the trinity? How the Holy Spirit Leads Through Scripture Not Feelings Dave Jenkins | Anchored in the Word | Servants of Grace Show Summary How does the Holy Spirit lead believers according to the Word of God and not according to subjective impressions or feelings? In this episode of Anchored in the Word, Dave Jenkins answers an important question about spiritual guidance, discernment, and sanctification. In a time when many people define the Spirit's leading by personal impressions, inner peace, or emotional certainty, Scripture gives us a far more reliable foundation. This episode explains that the Holy Spirit never leads believers away from the truth He inspired. Instead, He leads God's people through the Word of God, producing holiness, obedience, discernment, and Christlike character. Audio Player Video Player Episode Highlights The Spirit of God always leads through the Word of God The Spirit never contradicts Scripture Spiritual maturity is seen in holiness and obedience, not dramatic experiences Feelings are real, but they are not the final authority God's will is revealed primarily in His Word Believers must test teaching carefully and reject partial truth and subtle deception Key Scriptures John 16:13 2 Timothy 3:16–17 Hebrews 4:12 2 Peter 3:18 Luke 24:27 Luke 24:45 Galatians 5:22–23 Romans 8:13–14 Jeremiah 17:9 1 Thessalonians 4:3 John 17:17 Acts 17:11 1 Thessalonians 2:13 1 Thessalonians 5:21 Psalm 119:105 Full Article Many Christians today speak about spiritual guidance in deeply personal terms. They say things like, “The Spirit told me,” “I felt led,” or “God gave me peace about this.” While those phrases may sound sincere, the real issue is not whether they sound spiritual, but whether they reflect what Scripture actually teaches about the leading of the Holy Spirit. The Bible presents the Spirit's leading in a very different way than much of modern evangelical language does. The Holy Spirit does not lead believers away from the Word of God, beyond the Word of God, or in contradiction to the Word of God. He leads believers through the Word He inspired. That is where discernment begins. That is where spiritual maturity grows. That is where true assurance and stability are found. Jesus says in John 16:13, “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth.” That statement matters greatly. The Spirit is the Spirit of truth. He does not guide believers into confusion, contradiction, or self-defined spirituality. He guides them into truth. And since Scripture is the truth that He inspired, His ministry is never detached from the written Word of God. That is why 2 Timothy 3:16–17 is so important. All Scripture is breathed out by God and is sufficient for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness. The same Spirit who inspired the Word now uses the Word to shape the people of God. He leads us not by bypassing Scripture, but by bringing us deeper into it. He uses the Word to expose sin, renew the mind, strengthen faith, and train believers in obedience. This means that true spiritual guidance is not mainly about receiving private impressions. It is about being formed by divine revelation. The Spirit works through the means God has appointed. He illuminates the text, helps us understand its meaning, presses its truth upon our conscience, and empowers us to obey it. He does not lead us into self-trust, but into submission to Christ through His Word. Luke 24 helps us see this clearly. Jesus opened the minds of His disciples to understand the Scriptures, and He taught them that the whole Bible points to Him. The Spirit's ministry today follows that same Christ-centered pattern. He helps believers understand the Bible rightly, see how it testifies to Christ, and apply it faithfully in daily life. Spiritual growth is not mystical independence from the Bible. It is deeper dependence on the truth of God revealed in Scripture. That is also why the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22–23 matters so much. The Spirit's leading is seen not mainly in dramatic claims, but in transformed character. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control are evidences of His work. Romans 8:13–14 adds that those who are led by the Spirit are those who, by the Spirit, put sin to death. In other words, the Spirit leads believers toward holiness, not toward self-centered certainty. This is where feelings must be put in their proper place. Feelings are real. Scripture speaks honestly about them, especially in the Psalms. But feelings are not infallible. Jeremiah 17:9 reminds us that the heart is deceitful. That means emotions, impressions, and internal sensations cannot serve as the final authority for the Christian life. They must be tested by the Word of God. Many spiritual errors begin here. People redefine obedience by their emotions. They confuse inner peace with divine approval. They assume that sincerity is the same thing as truth. But biblical peace does not come from personal preference. It comes from walking in the truth. God's will is revealed primarily in Scripture, and His great will for His people is their sanctification. As John 17:17 says, “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” God grows His people through His truth. So how do believers discern whether something is truly the Spirit's leading? A few questions help. Does it align with Scripture? Does it promote holiness? Does wise Christian counsel affirm it? Does it produce the fruit of the Spirit? If something contradicts the Bible, it is not from the Spirit. It does not matter how intense the feeling is, how persuasive the teacher sounds, or how attractive the message appears. The Spirit never contradicts Scripture. This is especially important in a time of subtle deception. Some teachers use Bible words but do not explain the Bible in context. Others give partial truth while avoiding the full meaning of a passage. Some appeal constantly to emotion, experience, and personal story while minimizing careful biblical interpretation. These are serious warning signs. Acts 17:11 commends the Bereans because they searched the Scriptures to test what they were hearing. 1 Thessalonians 5:21 commands believers to test everything and hold fast to what is good. That means faithful teaching should help Christians think biblically, read carefully, and grow in discernment. If a teacher encourages you to focus more on your feelings than on God's Word, more on your experience than on God's truth, or more on private impressions than on the meaning of Scripture, that teacher is not helping you. The Spirit of God always leads deeper into the truth of God's Word. There is actually great comfort in this. Many Christians worry that they are somehow missing God's voice. But the good news is that God has already spoken clearly, sufficiently, and finally in His Word. You do not need secret guidance. You need faithful obedience. The Spirit's work is often quiet, steady, and ordinary. He grows your love for Scripture. He convicts you of sin. He deepens your trust in Christ. He strengthens perseverance in the daily responsibilities of life. That is real spiritual maturity. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” That is how God leads His people. He does it by His truth. He does it through His Word. He does it by His Spirit. And because the Spirit never contradicts Scripture, believers can walk with confidence, clarity, and discernment as they stay anchored in Christ. Takeaways and Reflection Questions Am I looking to Scripture first when I need wisdom and direction? Have I confused strong feelings with the leading of God? Is my understanding of spiritual maturity shaped by holiness and obedience or by dramatic experiences? Do I test what I hear from teachers and preachers by the context and meaning of Scripture? How is the Spirit using the Word of God to grow me in Christlikeness today? “If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth.” — John 14:15-17 One Friday each month, the college where I serve as campus minister celebrates “Spirit Day.” On Spirit Day students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to wear black and gold, the college colors, and to attend the college sports games. In our culture we often emphasize having a strong school, work, and team spirit. Many of us develop a strong national spirit as well. As a result, we can tend to view the Holy Spirit more as a power than as a person. But there is much to gain when we realize that the Holy Spirit is God himself living in us (2 Timothy 1:14), along with God's power being present in our lives. Jesus calls the Holy Spirit “the Advocate,” or “Counselor” (John 14:26), and he tells us that the Spirit will convict us of sin and guide us into all truth (16:7-15). The Spirit will make known to us what belongs to the Father and the Son. There is comfort and joy in knowing that God himself lives within us to lead and guide us. Paul tells us that our bodies are “temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in [us]” (1 Corinthians 6:19). What an amazing blessing it is to have God living in us! When we ask God to lead and guide us, and when we actively follow him, a whole new life of comfort and joy opens up for us. The Holy Spirit living in us changes our lives and the lives of the people around us. Spirit of God, we are honored to have you living in us. Lead us into the truth each day! In Jesus, Amen.
The Holy Spirit is not distant. He is a constant friend who lives within every believer. In this message, we see how the Spirit comforts in sorrow, empowers in weakness, convicts in love, and guides in truth. He brings clarity, awakens hearts, and connects us more deeply to God. Life with the Spirit is marked by peace, power, and worship. His presence turns hardship into hope and gives strength for every step of the journey.

In Acts 5:1-11, Ananias and Sapphira are a powerful illustration of the Holy Spirit's divinity and the seriousness of lying in the Lord's presence. Peter confronts Ananias, pointing out that lying to the Holy Spirit is equivalent to lying to God, underscoring that the Holy Spirit is not just a force but God Himself. We are humbled as we consider the holiness of God and the gravity of sin, especially within the community of believers. The sudden judgment on Ananias and Sapphira serves as a sobering reminder that the Holy Spirit, being fully God, is deeply concerned with the integrity and purity of the church.

Thank you for listening. If this message has blessed you please share it, that others may hear! God bless you.In Luke 5:17-26 clearly all three were present: verse 17, “The power of the Lord was with Him to heal” (Sounds like a divinely imparted approval of power, a gift of healing for the crippled man who surprises Jesus and the crowd. Seems to imply that sometimes the gift of healing or power would not be there or at least Jesus refuses to heal, when rejected in Nazareth, Mark 6:4-6.Mark 6:5-6 “And He could do no mighty miracles there, except that He laid HIs hands upon a few sick people and healed them. And He marveled because of their unbelief” See even Jesus could be limited (note “Could not do”)Also implied back in Luke 5, God was on board with the healing but not only a physical healing but more importantly the forgiveness of sins. And this caused a stir with certain religious leaders. It seems in this episode all three present: The will of God(The Spirit prepared Jesus, for He saw them coming) The power of God(verse 17) God-given gift of faith(v20). And when He saw He acted comprehensively. (The host's roof was destroyed and the loss of pigs at the Gadarenes, Luke 8:26-38: Note the difference in attitude of the people whose home was just broken into! Jesus had the complete package of healing for the paralytic: sins forgiven, paralysis healed. Luke 8:36-40; The deceased, unclean woman who presses through the crowd that was following Jesus, touches him all around yet only she seems to be healed (Matthew 9:18-26 & Mark 5:21-42, describes what she thought.)She was healed and Jesus seems puzzled and uninvolved in the healing (Note especially Mark 5:30-33 & Luke 8:45-46) “who touched me?”Note, The woman's reaction demonstrates humility, honesty, and hungerHere it seems to be the will of God enacted and which Jesus seemed to not be privy to. But, faith was given and healing and forgiveness occurred but how does Jesus presence fit into the experience?Note - John 5:19 & 30; Whatever the Father does OK with Jesus! This is what total surrender in ministry looks like. See also 6:38(read)Conclusion - The Power of God works best in league with the will of God, and the gift of faith. Even in Gethsemane where the Father told Jesus no, and then received encouragement by the angel of the Lord (Luke 22:39-43). The no was only temporary for the will of God included the promise of Resurrection power: Romans 8:11

What do we know about the third part of the Godhead, the Holy Spirit. Today we are reminded that the Holy Spirit is there are our comforter, guide, helper, gift giver, intercessor, counselor, encourager, and seal. The work of the Spirit is to bring conviction to who are are not saved and guidance to those who are. We know we can grieve and quench the spirit, but we must listen and be obedient. The Spirit was active in creation, present at the conception of Jesus' earthly body, involved in the resurrection, and is at all times present in the believer. The most challenging question Christians have before them is not, 'how much of the Spirit you have,' but rather, 'hw much of you the Holy Spirit has.'

After discussing God the Father and God the Son, it's time we talk about God the Spirit. He played a huge role throughout scripture, and our lives today. So, how can we see the Spirit at work in everyday life? Derrick and Zach encourage us in several ways as we learn about the Holy Spirit together.
At Christmas we celebrate the incarnation, or becoming human, of the Son of God. In order for salvation to take place, the eternal Son of God put on flesh and became a man. But why is the incarnation such a pivotal and beautiful part of the Christian faith? Why did it have to take place like this? Was there another way God could save humanity without becoming humanity? We discuss these questions and more on this episode. If you have any questions or need prayer, please email us at formation@providenceomaha.org.
The Creed - Week #5: God the Spirit (9-10-23)

The Holy Spirit has been called the “forgotten God,” but according to Scripture, the Spirit is central to the Christian life. This Point was originally published on December 31, 2019.
THE THESIS: The people who run Joe Biden are showing everyone he is irrelevant to them. THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES: We have a senile Figurehead who babbles about issuing policy statements his supposed emplyees ignore and overrule. The Bible tells us the story of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, who has driven by God into the fields where he grazed on grass like a cow for many years. God Humbles Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 4) THE NEWS & COMMENT: The State of collapse in our fallen world: Here is a person who has [her] job because [she] somehow knows [she] is a woman, [she] identifies as black and is sexually attracted to [other] women; this person gets to go on TV and overrule the “President” for whom [she] works. [AUDIO] - WH @PressSec says Biden didn't actually mean the Covid pandemic is over despite saying it: "Just to step back for a second, when he made those comments, he was walking through the Detroit car show, the halls of the Detroit car show, he was looking around." This is hard an isolated incident. The Figurehead is of no consequence to the people who run the Country. Do Biden's words even matter anymore? As his staff once again rushes in to clarify, it isn't clear who's running the country On the other end of the spectrum is Ron DeSantis. He is making The Party live in the world they are trying to create for us and their response are both hilarious and useful. If God affords DeSantis the opportunity to debate the Figurehead, the Governor will be able to show the emptiness of the Party's promises to the people. [AUDIO] - WATCH: Gov. DeSantis after Rep. [AUDIO] - CNN's Jake Tapper helps PEN America touts its study of "book bans" in schools because the conservatives don't like LGBTQ/CRT themes. But guess what? CNN won't put the actual graphic images of oral sex et cetera from books on screen so people can understand the fuss. Curating books is not banning. THIS is banning “GaysAgainstGrooming”: BREAKING: After being banned by @PayPal and @Venmo less than 24 hours ago, We have JUST been banned by @Google! I beg your forgiveness. I get confused when you talk about God, you talk about the trinity yet you separate them as different and it is so frustrating to where I want to find another podcast. I dont want to though, you try so hard and I have to respect that, so I need to share with you what The Spirit is saying to me. First I dont agree with the term trinity, it is a word that Catholics used to describe God. I do not agree with anything Catholics teach. For instance, the bible says not to call any man father, it also tells us not to bow to any graven image, and most important, go before Jesus to repent of sins and nothing about moving beads in your hand praying to Mother Mary. I believe in God The Spirit, and God The Flesh. If God is all Spirit, then it makes sense that The Holy Spirit is all God, and Jesus in the flesh is all God, and Spirit. In Roman times they believed in a whole mess o gods, these gods had children called demi gods. How do you explain to those who have such beliefs to where it makes sense. God was born of the flesh and had all the power of Himself. There is only one God, His name is Jesus and He has adopted us into His family. We are His children, like Israel, He is also our brother, like Israel He brought them out of Egypt, now He brings us out of bondage from an everlasting fire. By the way satan does not control anything in Hell. Hell is his punishment. Satan controls the Earth now, I am so amazed at all who follow him, even in the churches. So many strong healthy men bowing down to mandates. You think of Shadrack, Meshack, and Abednigo. ( im to tired to look up spelling) There were a lot of Israelites in the crowd of those bowing to the kings nebbys image for fear of burning, church today is no different. Can't wait until God says it's ok to leave the separate country of Washington. - Right girl on the wrong coast!!! --- --- --- --- Tom Want to grow your show?? Todd I love you but todays show made want to cry. Yes you have great ideas but listening to you sometimes is like the joke of the coach that has a great half time speech and then the door to the field is locked. Where is the tea party? Where is the third party. Where is the list of companies that eschew woke and want to start the parallel economy?? Use your power and vast influence to let us all help. Publish and talk about non woke alternatives. Not just your sponsors. I would love to have a list of woke companies that we should all avoid. If you made such a list it would something all your listeners could get behind. Many would share your list and share your show. Secondly where is the tea party. All us “ patriots” are putting all our eggs in the Trump basket. But he is the only one. Where will america be if they finally get to trump. We all know that the republicans are worthless and feckless , but what and where is our alternative?? Use your power and influence to make and get a woke list generated . Talk about it and your listeners will share it with their friends. Talk about a third party and your listeners will share your ideas with their friends. Yes you have great ideas of what needs to be done but as my dad always said “ the steam that blows the whistle, never turns the wheel” . Please use your resources and influence to help us make the needed changes. Keep up the good work, Good job, Tom in Ellensburg.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
