Twenty-five years ago, as a long summer drew to a close, a night out ended in tragedy. It changed the lives of four young men forever, ending another's far too soon. It happened in the leafy, affluent suburb of Donnybrook in south Dublin. A fight broke out among a group of young men outside Anabel's nightclub. When it was over, 18-year-old Brian Murphy lay on the ground. Hours later, he was pronounced dead. What followed wasn't just a murder investigation - it was a case that exposed a deep divide in Irish society, focusing on the Dublin southside rugby schools and Blackrock College in particular. Talking about disability in clinical encounters with parents, families, and patients can be very challenging. Decision-making around benefits and burdens of interventions and how they impact what future life for a child might be like inherently includes discussions of disability. However, it is easy for these conversations to view disability as something wholly negative, making it feel, or even it becoming, subject to many types of value distinctions. This can be a difficult space to navigate, especially for pediatric clinicians supporting families in informed decision making. We talk with bioethicist Jaime Konerman-Sease about the nuances of talking about disability, quality of life, and suffering, and how we can talk about disability with our patients and families.
Romans 3:29-31 — There are groups of people from different religions who join to worship together, claiming that they all worship the same God. But Paul states emphatically that there is indeed only one God and that there is only one way to receive salvation. Those who have different religions and different means to God are completely wrong. When the Jews claim that they are God's chosen people, Paul refutes this by saying that the Lord Jesus is a God for all. The people who will receive salvation are those that believe in Christ, no matter if they are Jew and Gentile. There is now equal opportunity because Christ has broken down all partitions between the Jews and Gentiles. In the sermon “Distinctions Abolished” from Romans 3:29–31, Dr. Lloyd-Jones warns against those who think that they are saved because their parents are saved, or that the gospel is only for a select few, or that all religions worship the same God. All will be held accountable to the one true and living God.

Podcast Notes Episode 472 Distinctions as the Key to Insight Hosts: Brian Miller, PCC and Chad Hall, MCC Date: July 3, 2025 In this episode, Brian Miller and Chad Hall dive deep into the concept of distinctions in coaching—the practice of helping clients untangle and clarify similar ideas that are often conflated. They discuss how distinctions can evoke awareness, expand thinking, and lead to more precise actions. With examples ranging from assertive vs. aggressive to interests vs. positions, they illustrate how a coach's role goes beyond asking questions to offering lenses for clearer perspective. Key Highlights: Defining Distinctions: A distinction separates two similar but different concepts. Helping clients see these can unlock new insights. Examples in Practice: Common distinctions include want vs. need, assertive vs. aggressive, candid vs. kind, and toxic vs. imperfect. Role of the Coach: Coaches aren't just question-askers—they are thinking partners who offer observations and distinctions that facilitate awareness. Distinctions Create Clarity: When clients conflate ideas (e.g., all managing is micromanaging), clarifying distinctions can change perceptions and actions. Language Matters: The words clients use—like calling someone “toxic”—can reflect deeper assumptions worth exploring. Takeaways: Distinctions Are Tools: Use them intentionally and contextually to help clients reframe issues and discover new possibilities. Beyond Questions: Coaching involves sharing observations, metaphors, and distinctions—not just asking questions. Clarity Enables Action: The clearer clients are about what they're experiencing, the more effectively they can respond. Stay Curious, Not Prescriptive: Offer distinctions as lenses, not conclusions—clients still decide what's true for them. Language Shapes Experience: Help clients label experiences accurately to avoid unhelpful assumptions. Iain McGilchrist calls William Blake “the least cosy of poets and one of the most insightful that ever lived.” Blake is cited more often than most figures in Iain's great book, "The Matter With Things".So what did Blake express that might much matter now? How did he understand key features of our humanity such as the imagination and inspiration, as well as the character of our day?In this conversation, prompted by the publication of "Awake!", Iain and Mark often land on wonderful quotes of Blake to unpack them. ”To the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself.” “As a man is, so he sees.” "If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is: infinite."They explore Blakean imagery such as the spiral shape of Jacob's Ladder. Contemporary concerns are central too, from architecture to AI. Above all, they celebrate Blake as a figure who can guide our desires, aid us with the contraries of modern life, and sustain our faith that life is good, for all the ills that surround us.For more on Iain's work - https://channelmcgilchrist.comFor more on Mark's work - https://www.markvernon.comMark's new book on William Blake is “Awake! What if managing your emotions is the very thing keeping you stuck? In this eye-opening IQ episode, Brandy shares a powerful insight: healing isn't about managing fear, stress, or hurt. It's about rewiring the emotional patterns at the root. You might be meditating, visualizing, or staying positive, but if your deeper subconscious beliefs haven't shifted, those same challenges can keep resurfacing. Brandy breaks down the difference between temporary relief and real transformation, and how trying to "cope" with your emotions or "manage" them can actually suppress the very energy that needs to be released. Through compassionate insights and real-life examples, Brandy shows how suppressed emotions like fear, hurt, or rejection can quietly continue affecting your health and energy, even when you're “doing all the work.” Like weeds that keep growing back, these patterns won't disappear until they're truly transformed at the root. You'll also discover why it's important to stop looping in old emotional patterns and start creating lasting change from within. Whether you're facing physical pain, emotional wounds, or chronic illness, this episode will help you uncover what's really holding you back so you can finally break free and create real, lasting change from the inside out. Come join us! IMPORTANT NOTE: We understand that some may believe mind-body healing is impossible. Therefore, if you would like to see images of individuals using their minds to relieve pain, you can check out this medical journal. It includes images from some of Brandy's case studies. If you want to learn how to use your mind to heal yourself, you can check out the training on Brandy's website. Each week, Brandy publishes a volunteer episode where she coaches a volunteer to heal themselves using their own mind. In addition, Brandy shares a quick IQ episode (Insights and Questions) where she answers listener questions or delves deeper into insights on working with the mind for healing. In this episode of Sermon Notes, Amy-Jo Girardier and Brentwood Baptist's senior pastor Jay Strother dive deep into James Chapter 2 and explore the themes of authentic faith in action. Together, they unpack the dangers of favoritism in the early church, revealing how James challenges believers to “be real” and love their neighbors without partiality—drawing fresh analogies from social media and real-life encounters. The conversation weaves through practical examples, from the realities of economic differences in biblical times to Amy-Jo's personal story about a neighborhood prayer box, illustrating how putting faith into tangible action transforms lives. They also discuss the synergy of faith and works, using both Abraham and Rahab as contrasting yet unified examples of faith at work, and encourage listeners to look for everyday opportunities to embody the gospel through service, mercy, and genuine community.

Author Mike Drayton, a clinical psychologist and leadership coach at the University of Oxford's Saïd Business School, explores attributes professionals can build on to be more persuasive at work, key distinctions between persuasion and manipulation, and examples of coercion in the workplace. He also explains why expanding influence in the workplace is less about “clever words or phrases” and more about exhibiting expertise and reliability. On 8 May, Drayton is scheduled to speak on influencing and persuasion skills at AICPA & CIMA's 2025 CPD 360 Annual Conference at the Jodrell Bank Centre for Engagement in the UK. Last July on the FM podcast, he shared tips for managing burnout, including how to adopt firm boundaries to prioritise wellbeing. What you'll learn from this episode: § Some differences between influence and persuasion. § Attributes and behaviours that can make us more persuasive. § Distinctions between persuasion and manipulation. § How to spot and respond to coercive tactics in the workplace. § Two fundamental traits that make us more respected at work. § Questions to help professionals identify their strengths and weaknesses.
If 'power' is the extent to which we each are able to bring about our intentions in the world, then our power matters. But there are many different ways to exercise power - as a parent, colleague, friend - in any role where our actions influence others. What does it take to recognise how we're exercising the power we have? Are we acting from our fearful parts or from that which is solid, genuine and faithful to life? Perhaps the deeper invitation is to centre our power around love itself - whether fierce or gentle - rather than around our attempts to dominate and control. It's the energy of knowing that you are who you are, and therefore speaking and acting from your authentic self. It doesn't matter what your work is—if you're a teacher or a nurse or whatever; it is your presence that's the power. It's not power over anybody else. It's just the expression of who you are. Power in the sense of controlling somebody else is different from personal presence. Love is the real power. It's the energy that cherishes. The more you work with that energy, the more you will see how people respond naturally to it, and the more you'll want to use it. It brings out your creativity, and helps everyone around you flower. Your children, the people you work with - everyone blooms. Marion Woodman Photo by Jessica Alves on Unsplash
