Join the #McConnellCenter as we welcome KY Secretary of State Michael Adams to convince us to read Robert Putnam's book Bowling Alone! Michael G. Adams is Kentucky's 86th Secretary of State. Michael graduated from McCracken County public schools, was the first in his family to get a bachelor's degree, and attended Harvard Law School on low-income aid. Michael worked for Senator Mitch McConnell and Governor Ernie Fletcher before moving to Washington to serve as Counsel to the U.S. Deputy Attorney General in the second Bush Administration. We all know we need to read more and there are literally millions of books on shelves with new ones printed every day. How do we sort through all the possibilities to find the book that is just right for us now? Well, the McConnell Center is bringing authors and experts to inspire us to read impactful and entertaining books that might be on our shelves or in our e-readers, but which we haven't yet picked up. We hope you learn a lot in the following podcast and we hope you might be inspired to pick up one or more of the books we are highlighting this year at the University of Louisville's McConnell Center. Have we become too quick to diagnose, medicate, and mold children into society's version of "normal"? In this episode of the English Plus Podcast, we present Fractured Focus, the powerful story of Leo—a nine-year-old boy whose boundless imagination collides with the rigid expectations of school and an ADHD diagnosis. As his world slowly dims under the influence of medication and standardized education, we are left with difficult but necessary questions: Are we supporting children's growth, or are we suppressing their creativity in favor of compliance? Do quick-fix solutions like medication overshadow the complexity of neurodiversity? How can we create a system that nurtures individuality rather than enforcing uniformity? Following the story, we dive into a reflective commentary, unpacking the themes of ADHD, conformity, and the fine line between structure and suppression in education. But the conversation doesn't stop there. We're also joined by Dr. Michael Adams, a psychiatrist specializing in child mental health and neurodiversity, for a deep and thought-provoking interview. Together, we challenge the conventional understanding of ADHD, explore alternative approaches to support neurodiverse children, and discuss the larger societal structures that shape our views on learning and behavior. This episode is an invitation to rethink what we believe about childhood development, education, and mental health. Whether you're a parent, educator, or someone interested in neurodiversity, this discussion will challenge your perspective and encourage meaningful reflection.

Nightlife turns the clock back to a century and a quarter ago, to 1901, when the newly federated Commonweath of Australia held the first federal election campaign. Michael Adams, Host of the Forgotten Australia podcasts will take us through the events and concerns of that time. What were the major concerns of politics at the time?
Presented by 6D Helmets If you pay close attention to pro racing and what the racers are wearing, we'll bet you have admired the handiwork of this episode's guest, Michael Adams, better known as Michael J. Kicks. While MJK makes his living in insurance, his creative outlet and passion is art: customizing sneakers and motocross boots. We met MJK at Anaheim One when he and Marta Gazzola of Gaerne presented RJ Hampshire with a pair of custom-painted SG22 boots. Once we realized it was the Michael J. Kicks, we set up this interview and had a ton of curious questions for him...enjoy!

Why is there a higher incidence of poverty and chronic health conditions in this group? What are the considerations for the LGBTQ+ older adults whose identity is defined by so much more than sexual activity? And how does the SAGE organization serve the unique needs of the LGBTQ+ elderly through its different roles? Join us for this important and engaging conversation. Mini Bio Michael Adams is the Chief Executive Officer of SAGE (Advocacy and Services for LGBTQ+ Elders). Founded in 1978 and headquartered in New York City, SAGE is a national organization that offers supportive services and consumer resources to LGBTQ+ older people and their caregivers.
K-12 public schools are failing to educate kids. Despite this Beshear and other's want schools to do more than just teach kids to read and do math. I go over why this is such a big mistake. Michael Adams wins some award that is normally given to Democrats or Republicans who have decided they don't want a political future anymore. Despite this normally being a career ending signifier, Adams is pretty happy about it. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/andrew-cooperrider/support
