The Purple Heart honors the men and women who are of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. During the American Revolutionary War, the Badge for Military Merit decorated six known soldiers. General George Washington created the Badge of Merit in 1782. Washington intended the honor to be presented to soldiers for "any singularly meritorious action." Its design included a purple, heart-shaped piece of silk bound with a thin edge of silver. Across the face, the word Merit was embroidered in silver. While the badge symbolized the courage and devotion of an American Patriot, no one knows who designed the award.

Tourism NT rewires media strategy with partner Atomic 212°, overhauls martech in bid to see off rivals piling into still spending, but anxious, over 50s

Tourism NT has always scored its biggest wins targeting the over 50s. Problem is, every other brand has twigged they're the only one still spending. Cutting through is harder because other tourism bodies are going large on media to carve out their own slice. Plus, it's already tricky for tourism operators to differentiate. Atomic 212°'s Asier Carazo plays a game of “hide the logo” with Tourism NT's team every time he visits Darwin, showing other tourism body ads without their branding, and usually catches them out. “I can't deny that we all get tripped occasionally,” admits Tourism NT marketing boss Tony Quarmby. “Unless you have the Opera House in your shot or Uluru … then it's really only the cityscapes that are going to make any difference. And to most consumers, a city is a city.” Problem is, most of the over 50s have “done” Uluru – so how to convince them that the NT is more than the iconic rock? At the same time, over 50s mindsets have shifted. They are far more safety conscious than even two years ago, says Quarmby, more anxious and more price focused – and that flux is ongoing. So Tourism NT needs to hit consumers with relevant, personalised content that speaks to those shifting mindsets, calms consumer nerves and gets them spending. Meanwhile, for the under 50s market, Quarmby needs to sell the NT as an experience and adventure that rivals overseas travel – without the expense of leaving the country. Hence Tourism NT going through a massive media, martech and process overhaul. At the heart sits a customer data platform, or CDP, to enable deeper understanding of key demo mindsets and more effective “real-time” personalised comms. Plus, it should help media budgets go further – i.e. by supressing ads to less relevant prospects, “and making sure we are seeking new people,” per Atomic's Ashleigh Carter. Quarmby expects the new stack and approach to “make a big difference” in about six months time. In the meantime, he's backing Atomic to deliver best bang for buck with smarter tactical campaigns to keep visitors incoming. He cites NT's hijacking of the Adelaide AFL Gather Round last month, reaching millions with Uluru-themed billboards and then retargeting them with discount vouchers – delivering “370 per cent plus in ROI” – as the kind of approach it needs to take. Atomic's Carazo thinks brands need to embrace the current chaotic environment and accept having to work harder on media campaigns to move the needle. “More craft, more high-touch media activity is definitely going to pay off,” he says. “Set and forget” won't cut it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When she came back from her Near Death Experience she was able to perceive multiple energetic constructs and communicate telepathically with plants, and  animals, and spirits of those who have crossed over. It became clear that her healing path would include animals and she eagerly pursued animal specific training including animal communication. Alan welcomes the CEO of RELEVE, Dawn Dahlby, author of Live Wellthy.  As a certified financial planner, Dawn says money is but a tool.  A tool that is defined and controlled by one's behavior.  Many of us live in fear of not having enough money, and or not being enough as human beings.  Dawn teaches how to master your mind and your money.  In her book Live Wellthy, she focuses on three key factors: Own It, Earn It, and Grow It.  Own it, is where you learn to own all that is, core values, weaknesses, and learning how to discover and utilize your strengths.  Earn It, is nothing but everything to do with money.  Earning the right income and outcome.  And lastly, Grow It, are the how-tos in comprehensive financial planning.  Maximizing your performance and mastering your mind and money.   Up next is Dr. Alok Treveti, a.k.a. Dr. Rewire.  Dr. Treveti started his journey at the age of 26 as a chiropractor.  A very successful one at that.  However, through his patients, he discovered how they shared similar ailments, which caused them to come in around the same time every month.  That piqued his interest to dig deeper to see the root of the problem.  Before treatment, he would sit down with his clients and talk with them, to get them to open up.  Through questioning, he was able to rewire his client's brains to help alleviate the aches and pains at least by 70%, without an adjustment.   He realized that there was a neurological connection between stress, depression, and anxiety and the aches and pains that brought his clients in for an adjustment.  Mind over matter, in other words, master your mind, make your money, and have abundant health.  Dr. Rewire says fear is the enemy that keeps you from moving forward.   However, he has come up with a formula that will help you overcome that with four easy steps.  One, figure out what the fear is.  Two, if your fear becomes reality, what would be the positives or benefits to your life?  Three, if it didn't happen, what would be the drawback?  And four, can you be grateful if it happens or not?  If you rebalance your brain and face your fear, it takes away its power.  Fear is a future emotion, and if you can eliminate its power over you by using Dr. Rewires formula, your journey to success is but a stone throw away.   [00:00:00] Live WELLthy [00:05:54] Empowerment [00:13:00] Own It, Earn It, Grow It [00:20:50] Antidote for Entrepreneurs [00:31:02] Overcoming Resentment [00:37:06] Formula for Fear

Have you ever wondered, "Why can't I get past this?" Have you ever wondered why you can't stop thinking about something, even when you know it's been over for a long time? Trauma rewires the brain and sends us into fight or flight initially when there is a real danger but sends the chemicals the same after the danger is over, if the trauma is not processed effectively so that it can be stored as memory and not current threat. Trauma, PTSD, C-PTSD, Anxiety need to know the threat to safety and survival is over.

My guest today is an associate professor of psychology at the University of Arizona. Her focus is on the physical and emotional responses we experience in grief, yearning and isolation. Dr. Mary France O'Connor is also the author of The Grieving Brain: The Science of How We Learn From Love and Loss. Grieving the loss of a loved one is a process people seldomly bring up. It's uncomfortable, it's painful and something terribly personal. When my mother passed away in July 2021, I was left trying to hold all the pieces but my body seemed to be falling apart. A friend shared with me that although grief never goes away, it does get softer. After an overwhelming response to a social media post about grieving the loss of my mother, I wanted to better understand how grief affects our minds, bodies, and lives. Dr. O'Connor heads the grief loss and social stress labs at University of Arizona and literally wrote the book on how grieving impacts the brain. She shares her expert opinions and research on how we can better process the feelings and process of grieving, not just for ourselves but also for others. Having Dr. O'Connor answer some of the more challenging questions we have around grief helped put loss, yearning, and that feeling of emptiness into perspective for life to go on. How is the experience of grief and grieving different?   Breaking down the simplicity of these two very similar words, which many of us may use interchangeably was really eye opening. Grief being a noun and a wave that comes over you as she explains it, means that it's also something that never quite goes away. Grief can stay with us for months and years. While grieving is a verb, it's something we do that changes over time. You may still be grieving the loss of a loved one years later, but the intensity of that grief changes and hopefully lessens over time.   What changes are happening in the brain when you experience grief?   Another big question Dr. O'Connor breaks down and helps us with is understanding how the brain processes grief. As Dr. O'Connor puts it, “there's love first before there can be grief,” which brings to light the emotions rooted in grief. Our brains are trying to make sense of the loss and it's a struggle to process when your brain is disoriented and yearning to see them again.   Sadly, many of us are never told how to go through the grieving process.. Losing someone you love is more than their absence. It's a loss of identity, habits and traditions that affect you emotionally and physically as well. I think this episode is an excellent start for those of us that don't feel prepared to grieve and feel at a loss on how to comfort someone through their grieving process.   3 Inspirational takeaways from Dr. Mary Frances O'Connor: ●      Grief is different from grieving, the two are not the same. ●      Grieving is a form of learning how to make life meaningful now. ●      Prioritize your self care and check in with the doctor   Be encouraged that we are resilient and capable of grieving, hopefully this gives you the understanding you need to deal with the complicated nature of grieving.   Connect with Dr. O'Connor Website Book   Connect with Barbara: Love Your Age: The Small-Step Solution to a Better, Longer, Happier Life  Barbara Hannah Grufferman website Instagram @Barbara Hannah Grufferman  Facebook @BarbaraHannahGruffermanAuthor    Learn more about your ad choices. How Grief Rewires The Brain Being a human can be a wonderful thing. We're social creatures, craving strong bonds with family and friends. Those relationships can be the most rewarding parts of life. But having strong relationships also means the possibility of experiencing loss. Grief is one of the hardest things people go through in life. Those who have lost a loved one know the feeling of overwhelming sadness and heartache that seems to well up from the very depths of the body. To understand why we feel the way we do when we grieve, the logical place to turn is to the source of our emotions: the brain. A new book explores the neuroscience behind this profound human experience. Ira speaks to Mary-Frances O'Connor, author of The Grieving Brain: The Surprising Science of How We Learn from Love and Loss, a neuroscientist, about adjusting to life after loss.   One Step Closer To Curing Cancer Two cancer patients treated with gene therapy a decade ago are still in remission. Thousands of patients have undergone this type of immunotherapy, called CAR-T Cell therapy, since then. But these are the first patients that doctors say have been cured by the treatment. The findings were recently published in the academic journal Nature. Ira talks to Dr. Carl June, co-author of the study, and director of the Center for Cellular Immunotherapies, at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.   Team USA's Skiers Are Using Battery-Heated Shorts At The Olympics Team USA's Alpine Ski Team is wearing custom-designed heated shorts to stay warm on the freezing slopes at the Beijing Olympics. But these aren't your average shorts. They use a lithium-ion battery, and the thread they're sewn with serves as the heat conductor. Ira talks with Josh Daniel and Lauren Samuels, graduate students at the University of Oregon's sports product management program, who came up with the cutting-edge design.

"He who is rooted in oneness realizes that I am in every being; wherever he goes, he remains in me.” -Bhagavad Gita Lord Krishna Yet, as human beings, we are often disconnected, not only from the oneness that is self, but also the oneness that is the universe surrounding us. Until we reunite the two - we remain simply ; at odds. Our minds are our greatest tool, and when empowered, an become our greatest asset. But often our minds are cluttered with distraction, causing us to lose our focus and connection to the source of this energy. The antidote- silence. When we quiet our mind, we recharge our energies. Yet many of us fear this silent reprise. Silence isn't empty, it's full of answers. We must remind ourselves, as in the immortal words of the poet Rumi- "The quieter we become, the more we learn." Our guest today, Dr. Krishna Bhatta, is here today, to share how intermittent silence serves as the doorway to meditation and recharging our minds! Listen in and subscribe so you can blaze new trails to your happy chemicals too.Your host, Loretta Breuning is founder of the Inner Mammal Institute and author of "Habits of a Happy Brain: Retrain your brain to boost your serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin and endorphin levels."Life is more peaceful and satisfying when you understand your inner mammal. Good feelings come from brain chemicals we've inherited from earlier mammals. They evolved to do a job, not to make you feel good all the time. When you know the job each chemical does in the state of nature, your ups and downs make sense. More important, you can re-wire yourself to enjoy more of them in sustainable ways. It's not easy, alas. Our brain is designed to release happy chemicals when you take steps that promote survival. But our brain defines survival in a quirky way: it cares about the survival of your genes and it relies on neural pathways built in youth. To make things even harder, our brain habituates to the rewards it has so you always have to do more to get more happy chemicals. We are not born with survival skills like our animal ancestors. Each newborn human wires itself from its own early experience. Happy chemicals are like paving on your neural pathways, wiring you to repeat behaviors that made you feel good before. This is why our urgent motivations don't make sense to our verbal brain. It's not easy being mammal! When you know how your brain works, you can find healthier ways to enjoy happy chemicals and relieve unhappy chemicals. You can build new neural pathways by feeding your brain new experiences. But you have to design the new experiences carefully and repeat them— a lot!The Inner Mammal Institute has free resources to help you make peace with your inner mammal: videos, blogs, infographics, and podcasts. The habit of giving thanks can move mountains in hearts. What stands in your way can be minimized with the action of giving thanks. It's not just a season for a day, but an action for a lifetime. Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. http://bit.ly/WomenofIMPACT How much time during your day would you say you give thanks? Literally verbally expressing to someone how much you appreciate them, including in the bad and in the ugly. Life is complicated and far from perfect. Yet for some reason, we try to live a season of perfection. One day of the year, we claim to give thanks for ALL throughout the year. But how can one truly give thanks for all the blesses and messes in one day? You can't. And oddly enough, your heart knows it. We live day to day fumbling through what we think needs to be accomplished. We miss the stranger who passes us by in the store to give a sweet "hello" and a smile of cheer. We scramble with the children getting them out the door for more activities galore. But we forget to tell them the sweetest sound to the ears, "I love you!". How can our minds forget the importance, of later what we regret, the habit of giving thanks? "Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Giving thanks is not a convenience. In fact, it should be a disruptor in our lives. Giving thanks is a gift of presence to the world in which you touch. Your pause and recognition of someone is an extension of your heart that instills hope for the one receiving such a gift of words. The habit of giving thanks peels back the hardened layers of hurt and pain not just for the receiver, but for the giver. The K.I.S.S. ~ Give thanks with a grateful heart! This season and for days to come, may your mouth exude love and grace for those who are placed in your path. "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." ~ Matthew 6:21 It's easy to feel gratitude. That' what being grateful is all about. But the impact comes with action. Giving thanks puts your thoughts into motion with intentionality. No! It doesn't ever come easy. However, your heart grows and so does your mind when you give thanks with a grateful heart. There are so many reasons to give thanks with a grateful heart. Increases your immune system Improves sleep Eliminates stress Rewires your brain Boosts self-esteem and performance Improves relationships Creates a resistance to negativity If you get all of this from giving thanks, why wouldn't you give it more? So instead of burying your heart in messes and misery, give thanks with a grateful heart. Compliment a stranger for his/her help, even if he/she couldn't help you the way you think you needed. Give a hug or handshake with a sincere "thank you". The action of gratitude elevates hope. Why not give hope to someone? It's giving thanks with a grateful heart. Express gratitude with an intentional action not just for others, but for you. You matter! Be kind to yourself. Speak words of gratitude and hope. Grow your mind with a sense of appreciation. You're gonna mess up. So laugh a little more at the messes so you can experience more blesses. The habit of giving thanks is more about the impact and influence you create all throughout the year! Childhood trauma is devastating. When a child's brain develops it is exquisitely sensitive to stress - before and after birth. Stress hormones literally rewire the brain, affect healthy attachment, and impair the development of pathways that promote self-regulation. This means that when we see highly dysregulated behaviour it is often due to childhood trauma. In this episode we talk with psychologist Dr Michael Gurian about different types of trauma and how they affect child development - causing not only mental health issues but also physical illness even decades later. Learn more about the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study and what you can do to prevent the harmful effect of ACEs in your own children. Dr Gurian also shares his own experience with childhood sexual abuse. (Please be aware that we speak frankly about sexual abuse in this episode).

Fear is a natural part of starting something brand new, the brain send a lot of messages to try to remain in the comfort zone and resist the urge to make a change. The brain will always process the thinking and feeling of fear first- it came from millions of years of evolution- the brain processes fear and anxiety and negativity at 10X the rate of positive feelings and thinking. So, what is pain?  It's a perception that involves and amazing communication between the brain and the body through the central nerve system.  It's not “in your head”.  It's REAL and it serves a purpose Imagine your child with a disease not able to feel pain.  Would never know when something needed attention. Before understanding pain, we must understand that the Greatest Doctor in the World is Inside of You!  It's you!!! How does a cut heal?  How does mother's breast milk change based on babies needs figured out from the baby's saliva?  The body is the most amazing thing ever made.  Science is now proving each day what we've known for 1000's of years.  The body has an intelligence designed to heal itself.  2013 research showed that those in pain had a 43% chance of surgery if seeing a doctor first but only a 1.7% chance if seeing a chiropractor first despite both groups healing! Within the firsts 90 days the brain centers for pain are directly linked to the physical tissue of the body that is injured.  After 90 days the brain centers switched to the emotional centers.  And once these brain centers changed our perception of pain becomes 500% more sensitive. More proof that we must understand how our emotions influence our healing and pain perception.  Think about the Phantom Limb study where someone had their arm amputated yet still felt the pain as if the arm was still there.  That's an emotional area of the brain!  Must be addressed along with the physical. So why does chiropractic and the adjustment process (applied correctly following true testing) have to be a part of the healing process? Chiropractic physically alters the structure of the spine and therefore the Central Nerve System The adjustment process instructs the body's stress hormones to calm down The adjustment process provides nutrition to the discs and the tissues of healing Chiropractic lowers the body's needs for pain medication Many more reasons Dr. Dan's suggestions for influencing the brain and nerve system for healing Chiropractic Sleep in a room 66 degrees and blacked out (receptors all over the body will calm and the pain can decrease. Also take a bath with Epsom salt and lavender essential oil before bed for the energetic and neurological healing of the magnesium in the salt and the lavender.  Eases the brain centers transmitting pain Do Expressive Writing. Take a piece of paper and write down all of the emotional issues you are dealing with from the most to the least. Then tear the paper apart. 6 to 10 minutes before bed. Rewires pain centers and puts focus back on healing Have an attitude of gratitude.  Gratitude turns off those pain centers in the emotional areas of the brain.  Simple but not easy to do this. Deep Breathing (episode we did with Dr. Jim Claussen really hit this) Techniques where exhaling is the focus Meditation (also see episode with Dr. Jim) What's funny is that the people who heal the best from disc injury had spouses and partners who just didn't ask how the person in pain was feeling. So interesting but asking triggers the pain center in the brain.  Have that talk with your significant other or caregiver. 111,000,000 Americans in Chronic pain relying on a broken medical system of medications and surgery and not getting answers when the answers are already in them! After Gabby Giffords’ horrific shooting in 2011, Maegan Morrow helped her re-learn to speak using music therapy.  Maegan explains how music is used for healing the brain. The brain's ability to pave new pathways around damaged areas is called neuroplasticity. Learn how music generates neuroplasticity superpowers! Among its many benefits, singing strengthens the immune system; increases lung capacity; is a natural anti-depressant; releases endorphins; relaxes and reduces stress levels; expands vocabulary; increases neuroplasticity; trains the ear, resulting in greater empathy when listening due to increased awareness of inflection variations; can reduce asthmatic symptoms by strengthening the lungs (Maegan overcame her need for inhalers through the lung exercise and breath control of opera singing). "Nothing activates the brain so extensively as music." – Dr. Oliver Sacks, whose account of music therapy in Parkinson's disease was the basis for the book and film "Awakenings." Join us at Women of IMPACT. http://facebook.com/groups/thewomenofimpact But I have watched over time how technology has snuck into the backdoor of our lives and ruled with greater influence over personal relationships. It's one thing to be a lifelong learner. It's another thing to be distracted by everything you wish you had, living vicariously through others' images, videos, sayings, and relationships. What kind of a lifestyle is that? And are you really living YOUR dream? Now I understand the flip side of how beneficial technology can be for communication, learning, and connection. Yet it still can affect your mind and body even if it enhances your lifestyle. So let's briefly talk about some of the negative effects. Please indulge me for just a few minutes. We explore what it means to have an “integrated” brain, look at lessons across vastly different scientific disciplines, and share the accessible, simple strategy you can use in 20 minutes to integrate the most important learnings from scientific research to create an integrated brain, body, and mind - to improve your health, happiness, wellbeing and success with our guest Dr. Dan Siegel.  Dr. Dan Siegel is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA. He is a multi-best-selling author and award-winning educator and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. His work has taken him across the globe to work with individuals such as the King of Thailand, Pope John Paul II, and The Dalai Lama. What is integration? What does it mean to live a fully connected life?Different parts can be honored for their differences and then linked and connected and allowed to communicate with one anotherThe linking of different integrated parts - is the fundamental way a complex system optimizes functioning - the way it “self organizes” An optimally integrated organism or organization is in a state of harmony, a state of flow, a state of healthA healthy life, a successful life, a happy life comes from being integratedThe opposite of integration is either Chaos or Rigidity Dan comes at the questions of happiness and successful lives from a wholistic integrated perspective across any and all scientific fields  “interpersonal neurobiology”A healthy mind is both integrated within - inside your body - and integration between - integration between other people and the planet Information.. IN FORMATION - information is just energy in a certain configuration that gives it context and meaning - information is meaning embedded via energy patterns How is the MIND part of the system of energy and information flow in reality and the world as a whole?“Emergence” - the essence of a complex system is that it interacts with itself and self organizes 3 Pillar Training - how to integrate the brain to be healthier and happier - how to live in harmony instead of chaos Do you feel like you belong? Does our society today foster a sense of belonging? This powerful story about a sense of belonging ties into the science of the mind and the brain - the “embodied brain” and the “relational” mind What is the self? What is the mind? Does the mind exist, as the source of your self, inside your skin encased body? Is that it?You also have a relational self that is equally as important as your individualized self By cultivating the 3 pillars you develop neuroplastic changes in your brain - changes in the physical structure of your brain - to create meaningful integration for the brain Integration is the basis of wellbeing in your body, mind, and relationships The accessible, simple strategy you can use in 20 minutes to integrate the most important learnings from scientific research to create an integrated brain, body, and mind - to improve your health, happiness, wellbeing and success.Homework: Take the Wheel of Awareness on Dan’s website (linked in the show notes) - most efficient, effective, science based, multi-disciplinary thing you can bring into your life . If you've ever wondered what the most successful people in the world know that the rest of us don't, then do we have the show for you! Today we're going to talk with one of the most positive researchers in the world! * Bio at bottom. His name is Shawn Achor and he's one of the world's leading experts on the connection between happiness and success. His research on mindset made the cover of Harvard Business Review, his TED talk is one of the most popular with over 11 million views, he's lectured or worked with over a third of the Fortune 100 companies, as well as the NFL, the NBA, the Pentagon and the White House. Shawn is the author of New York Times best-selling books The Happiness Advantage (2010) and Before Happiness (2013) and he recently did a two-hour interview with Oprah at her house to discuss his mission to bring positive psychology to the world. Today we're going to talk using positive psychology to rewrite your own maps, and completely transform your life. This means greater success at work, happiness at home, and new outlook, for a new you. It's come at an incredible time too. Our show hits our one month anniversary, tomorrow. At present we have thousands of listeners in at least 78 countries, we're growing exponentially with today being our highest growth day ever, and this morning, we woke up to find we're the #15 self-help show in the world…all in under one month. I want to talk with Steve about this, about how our mindset and our maps truly create our reality -> and how to use that to our advantage! So what's the goal of today's show: To give you the advice you need to become a “positive genius” and bring tremendous success into your life! Topics include: What creates greater levels of happiness. Why when you're happy first, everything improves – How happiness is really is first step before success. Most important: First have to believe change is possible – Understanding this is the biggest change in positive psychology movement Understanding why happiness must precede success and why success does NOT bring happiness This is why “successful” movie stars, musicians, professional athletes, and even tenured professors are not happy. And is why Oprah was depressed at the height of her career And why Shawn Achor himself was depressed while at Harvard Understanding that it's not about your genes, even if you're “pre-disposed” toward something May have genes that predispose you, but it's not about your genes. Making small changes in your life on a daily basis can have major impact on rewiring your mind. Small changes have macro-level affects on our intelligence creativity and ability to be positive. Big question is: What's the smallest intervention possible?   Key Exercise: For 21 days in a row think of 3 things they're grateful for each morning or each day you get into work (CHECK OUT OUR HAPPINESS MEDITATION FOR A SIMILAR GUIDED MEDITATION EXERCISE) This activity of scanning the world is extremely powerful. It can take people who have been genetically low-level pessimists, and in 21 days turn them into life-long optimists!!! Doing this exercise with 4 year olds at the dinner table, having them scan for things to be grateful for, can turn them from lifelong default pessimist to lifelong optimist. Every outcome improves when human brain is positive first As important children practice this as brushing their teeth or eating breakfast. An extremely important habit for both kids and adults alike – for adults important to practice this before going to work, or first thing when they get in to work. Important note on this exercise: Must be things are grateful for that are NEW (that's occurred over last 24 hours and why) Rewires the brain to start to scan for the positive and see the opportunities that are around you. Without exercises like this, your ability to focus on the positive can atrophy. 5 HABITS THAT CREATE POSITIVE CHANGE Every day when get into work, first job to write 2 minute positive email praising or thanking someone they know. Do this for just 3 days in a row and people literally get addicted to it, and others write great emails back. 21 days later on your social connection score is off the chart in social support, because you have 21 people you've meaningfully activated. The Single greatest predictor of long term happiness is breathe, depth, and meaning of social networks. Social connection is as predictive of life expectancy as the food you eat, how much exercise you do, and even whether you smoke or not. Social connections are why western males don't live as long as their female counterparts, and why western males are so much more likely to have heart-attacks. Success rarely leads to happiness However, if you can get someone to be positive, they rise to the highest possibility within your band of potential Lucky vs. unlucky people Unlucky people are simply not focused on the positives and so don't see the potential around them. Amazing study about lucky vs. unlucky people – the “lucky” people saw opportunity the pessimists or “unlucky” people did not. In 21 days can make 1 positive habit Discussed why some army rangers (optomists) see a 600 foot hill as 600 feet and scramble for safety, while other soldiers (pessimists) see it as 900 feet, and give up under attack without even attempting the hill. Shared a study about coffee shop reward cards and the lessons learned. Never start goal from zero – instead anytime make resolution or create goal, write down three accomplishments already had, or resolutions you were already able to keep. Showing what you've already accomplished (aka not starting from zero) fuel's growth toward other activities. This is also power of journaling – share one positive experience they had. Shawn Achor has started a 21 day O-course with Oprah to help retrain people's minds for happiness. It's at Oprah.com/happiness Many Fortune 100 companies are implementing these happiness strategies including: CEO Habitat for Humanity, Buick, Mckenzie company Worked with Google and Laszlo Bock as well.  Showed how 2 minutes of sitting silently at computer / aka meditating can make a HUGE difference on employees performance and happiness.  Realize the poison of a victim mentality It's not about our genes, the market or what others have done to us. It's a fallacy that we can't change other people. If we're positive we can have a big impact. We can greatly influence them and make them positive Focus on the low-hanging fruit, grass-roots, be a positive influence on those directly around you. For instance, don't go for your boss, but your co-workers around you. California Wave campaign in extreme high-crime neighborhood. Officers went door to door – were not well received Officers then started smiling and waving to everyone. Officers became engaged with community and crime dramatically dropped Shawn Achor worked with White House Suggestion made during Baltimore protests that a wave campaign to build community could have a more positive impact than beefing up police security Hospital campaign modeled after the Hilton. When patient comes w/in 10 feet make eye contact. At five feet see if there's anything you can do to help them. Dramatically improved people's response to hospital, their likelihood to recommend the hospital, the likelihood to return to the same hospital, and quite possibly, their healing as well! Dramatically improved patient care! He self-medicated. He covered stories in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. He went to Iraq six or seven times. When he got back, he was depressed. He was 32 years old and had never touched hard drugs before. But it became the thing that made him feel better. Millions of people were watching. The red light was on. And right there, in the middle of his live segment, he had a panic attack. I’m going to tell you how to deal with stress. I’ll tell you what works for me. But first, I want to tell you about my guest, Dan Harris. Dan is an anchor on "Good Morning America" and "Nightline."  He's also the No. 1 New York Times bestselling author of 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works – A True Story. After the book came out people had questions. So he also created an app called "10% Happier." It teaches users easy “judo moves” to have more creativity, feel less stress, and be happier.  It helps you surrender. Be self-aware. Focused. “The events that led up to my panic attack were a case study in mindlessness,” Dan says. “Going to wars without thinking about the consequences, getting depressed and not knowing it and blindly self-medicating.” I wanted to know what pushed him over the edge. “The one-word answer is cocaine,” Dan says. “The more complicated answer is I arrived at ABC News when I was 28.” He was insecure. He worked with big names like Diane Sawyer and Barbara Walters. He wanted to be successful. “My Jewish father has this expression, ‘The price of security is insecurity.’ I really embraced that,” he says. The pressure never let up. He demanded more of himself. But why do we make it so hard for ourselves? Many people have gone through this slow-motion panic attack. Including me. It's the stress of daily living.  Something bad happens to you. You lose a job or get a divorce. Everyday wear and tear picks at you. Stress happens over time. And if you don’t notice it, it builds. The voice in your head becomes meaner. Angrier. More resentful and regretful. Energy is wasted. Your creativity dies. Your idea muscle atrophies. And you’re at the bottom of the funnel dreaming about retirement. But instead of imagining a better life later, retire. You can retire a little bit every day. Breathe. Feel your chest fall. That’s retirement. It’s a fantasy. I’m going to tell you how to make it real right now. But before I do, let me tell you what you’ll get from today’s podcast: a) Learn How to Have More Ideas Dan says, "When you ask, 'What is boredom like? What does this feel like? Where am I feeling it in my body? What's the taste of it in my mind?’ That is curiosity.” Curiosity produces creativity. And ideas. You’ll learn how to make room for curiosity. b) Distance Yourself From Stress Dan teaches you how to notice stress and see your problems clearly. You’ll learn to separate yourself from it. And relax. Essentially, you're becoming a scientist of your own inner reactions. A scientist is not his experiment. The same way humans are not their reactions and emotions to things. Those are separate. You’ll learn how to separate yourself from stress.c) Be 10% Happier “First of all, 10% is just a joke. You can't quantify happiness,” Dan says. “I came up with that as a bullshit answer to a friend.” But being a little bit happier is better than being a little bit miserable. But you have to practice. You're practicing becoming aware of the angry voice that comes up and reacts. So you can be calm. Ok, now here’s Dan’s secret to dealing with stress: meditation “Let me just say outright, because as soon as you bring that word up, some high percentage of your listeners are like, ‘All right, I'm done with this podcast. Meditation's bullshit. I don't want to do it,'" Dan says. He thought that too. “The book is really the story of me coming to terms with the fact that meditation is not what I thought it was. It's secular and scientifically validated,” he says. People reject meditation. It’s a reflex. But there are a lot of benefits to it. It: - Lowers blood pressure - Boosts immune system - Rewires parts of your brain “Nobody continues to meditate because they feel like 'my pre-frontal cortex might be changing.' You continue to meditate because you're less of an asshole to yourself and others,” he says. “That's a huge value added.” And I agree. Louis C.K., my favorite comedian, says, “It’s not up to you if you’re an asshole or not. That’s up to everybody else.” But you can be aware of it. Louis says, “Self love is a good thing, but self-awareness is more important. You need to once in a while go ‘Um, I'm kind of an asshole.’ You have to have that thought once in a while or you’re a psychopath.” Listen to this podcast with Dan Harris. You’ll learn how to relax, distance yourself from stress, turn boredom into curiosity and become some percent happier. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
