Lord Northcliffe, born Alfred Harmsworth, was a self-made newspaper mogul who recognized aviation's strategic importance early on. In 1913, his newspaper, the Daily Mail, offered a £10,000 prize for the first non-stop transatlantic flight, realizing that aviation meant Britain was "no longer an island." Though the First World War suspended the challenge, it was reignited in 1919. The Vickers team was led by John "Jack" Alcock, a working-class mechanic from Manchester whose obsession with engines led him to become one of Britain's greatest pilots. He partnered with Arthur Whitten Brown, known as Ted, an American citizen and electrical engineer who had survived a harrowing war experience, including being shot down twice. Despite their different temperaments—Alcock was outgoing while Brownwas quiet and diffident—the two veterans shared a determination to achieve a great gesture for the future of aviation. (1/4)1907

Newfoundland was a treacherous launch site, characterized by ice-packed coastlines, boggy ground, and constant rain. Teams had to ship their aircraft in pieces and assemble them in makeshift aerodromes while waiting for favorable winds. Many contemporaries viewed the mission as suicidal. Harry Hawker and Matt Grieve, flying a small Sopwith, grew impatient and launched into a cloud bank in May, disappearing from sight. When they failed to arrive in Ireland after 30 hours, the world presumed them dead, sparking global grief. Shortly after Hawker's departure, Fred Raynham's attempt ended in a "heart-rending" crash during takeoff. This left the field open for Alcock and Brown, who arrived late with their massive Vickers Vimy bomber. This fabric-and-wood machine successfully carried the duo through relentless North Atlantic clouds until they landed in Ireland, simply declaring they were from "America." (3/4)1923

Alcock and Brown's 1919 triumph predated Charles Lindbergh's famous crossing by eight years; Lindbergh himself credited them for showing the way. Following their landing, the pair was celebrated across London, eventually attending a luncheon where a young Winston Churchill, then Minister of War and Air, presented the £10,000 prize. Churchill was an early and industrious devotee of aviation. The saga concluded with a poignant banquet in Mayfair where twenty people, including former rivals and engineers, gathered around a single table. The atmosphere shifted from intense competition to a collective celebration of an achievement that changed the world. The Vickers Vimy remains a romantic symbol of this breakthrough in London's Science Museum. David Rooney reflects that this "big hop" into the unknown represents a human spirit of discovery that will likely be mirrored in a future trip to Mars. (4/4)1925

Your organisation has probably spent years building a learning library. Courses, videos, SCORM files, PDFs — hundreds of them, living in the LMS or scattered across SharePoint. You can enrol in them. You can sit through them. What you can't do is ask them a question and get an answer in seconds, at the moment you actually need one. The knowledge is there. It just isn't retrievable. That's the problem Mike Alcock, founder of Talvi, has set out to solve. In this episode, Mike takes John through how Talvi works. They also cover Mike's own unlikely route into learntech: a Civil Engineering degree at Sheffield, a detour through an insulation factory in Newcastle, and three successive software businesses each arriving ahead of the market. And they have a searching conversation about what tools like Talvi mean for the LMS and for the instructional designer — neither of whom emerges entirely unscathed. Is the technology now genuinely good enough to make learning in the flow of work a practical reality, rather than a conference agenda perennial?.   TIMESTAMPS 00:00 - Start 02:14 - Intro 04:15 - What is Talvi for? 16:20 - What's the journey for a learning leader adopting Talvi? 20:47 - Mike's story: from civil engineering to learntech 30:19 - What will tools like Talvi do to the LMS? 39:50 - Explanation of terms: RAG, vector databases… 49:01 - End   CONNECT WITH LEARNING HACK LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/johnhelmer X: @johnhelmer Threads: @jphelmer Bluesky: @johnhelmer.bsky.social Website: learninghackpodcast.com

Fresh off Anarchapulco 2026, Dave Alcock stops by to recap his week in Puerto Vallarta that started with a harmless interaction with the Policia, and ended with taxis exploding after the cartel retaliation. As the 12th annual event began its first year in Puerto Vallarta, we recap the week that always changes lives and inspires people to break out of the system. The largest anarchist conference in the world continues to be a source of inspiration for those looking for solutions to the problems society faces.—Guest LinksDave Alcock - "The Third Rail with Natureboy" Podcast RumbleApple Podcasts—Video ChannelsWatch the video version of Macroaggressions:Rumble: https://rumble.com/c/Macroaggressions YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@MacroaggressionsPodcastBrighteon: https://www.brighteon.com/channels/macroaggressions/—MACRO & Charlie Robinson LinksHypocrazy Audiobook: https://amzn.to/4aogwmsThe Octopus of Global Control Audiobook: https://amzn.to/3xu0rMmWebsite: www.Macroaggressions.ioMerch Store: https://macroaggressions.dashery.com/ Link Tree: https://linktr.ee/macroaggressionspodcast—Activist Post FamilySign up for the Activist Post Newsletter: https://activistpost.kit.com/emailsActivist Post: www.ActivistPost.comNatural Blaze: www.NaturalBlaze.com —Support Our SponsorsGround Luxe Grounding Mats: https://GroundLuxe.com/MACROReplace Your Mortgage: www.WipeOutYourMortgageNow.comC60 Power: https://go.ShopC60.com/PBGRT/KMKS9/ | Promo Code: MACROChemical Free Body: https://ChemicalFreeBody.com/macro/ | Promo Code: MACROWise Wolf Gold & Silver: https://Macroaggressions.Gold/ | (800) 426-1836LegalShield: www.DontGetPushedAround.comEMP Shield: www.EMPShield.com | Promo Code: MACROChristian Yordanov's Health Program: www.LiveLongerFormula.com/macroAbove Phone: https://AbovePhone.com/macro/Van Man: https://VanMan.shop/?ref=MACRO | Promo Code: MACROThe Dollar Vigilante: https://DollarVigilante.spiffy.co/a/O3wCWenlXN/4471Nesa's Hemp: www.NesasHemp.com | Promo Code: MACROAugason Farms: https://AugasonFarms.com/MACRO—

It is astonishing to me that we went from the first powered flight of a few hundred feet in 1903 to attempting to fly the Atlantic in 1919. The Daily Mail had offered a prize of £10,000 to cross the Atlantic. The pilots called it the Big Hop. Nowadays we think nothing of it but back then they had open cockpits, primitive navigation tools, unreliable weather forecasting and many other problems. This was right on the edge of what was possible at the time. And not always on the right edge!We talked about:- the wonderful Hilda Hewlett, a pioneer of British aviation- how WW1 affected the competition (and the competitors)- Alcock and Brown and the runners up- how to keep calm (in your lounge suit) and carry on, even as death is racing to meet you.It is a wonderful story and David is wonderful storyteller!

The episode opens with Diana and Nicole catching up on their latest work, focusing on testing AI models for accuracy in handwritten-text transcription tasks. The hosts then discuss the novel TransAtlantic by Irish author Colum McCann and what family historians can learn from its structure to write better family narratives. Diana explains that the novel views the immigration story from the Irish perspective, following the fictional character Lily Duggan and three subsequent generations, with the prose connecting each fictional character to a true story and an actual historical figure. Nicole shares the first historical snapshot, covering Lily Duggan's 1845 meeting with the formerly enslaved abolitionist Frederick Douglass in Ireland. She then details the 1919 Atlantic crossing of Lily's daughter Emily and granddaughter Lottie, where they witness the first non-stop transatlantic flight by aviators Alcock and Brown. Diana picks up the thread by discussing Lottie's later meeting with US Senator George Mitchell during his 1998 peace brokering visit to Northern Ireland, and the final chapter, where Lily's great-granddaughter, Hannah, possesses the unopened letter that connects all the women. Listeners learn three key ideas for writing their own family stories: use a focal object passed down through generations, consider historical characters an ancestor may have encountered, and research important historical events in the time and place their ancestors lived to understand how those events may have impacted them. In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. James Alcock discuss what near-death experiences are and the increase in them in recent years due to improvements in medical technology. While near-death experiences (NDEs) have been known about for a long time, we, as a scientific community, are starting to understand more about what they mean for neurological processes. However, despite knowing the science of what is happening, NDEs and how they are experienced are subject to one's own beliefs, context, and even religious framework. Dr. Alcock and Therese also discuss the relationship between near-death experiences, hallucinations, and even reactions to various drugs and how they create powerful subjective experiences.     Key Takeaways: In surveys taken in the United States, about 3% of people have reported having near-death experiences. This number can be difficult to assess as they are based on memory and the surveys are taken, sometimes years after the incident in question. It is difficult to prove near-death experiences in research studies due to the subjectivity of what is being perceived.  Even with the science that we do know, those who have near-death experiences (including neurologists who have studied the brain) report the reality of the feelings and perceptions that are felt in these experiences.    "Context is important. Our interpretation is important. And it's very difficult, if not impossible, for any individual to distinguish between reality and subjective fantasies in those situations." —  Dr. James Alcock   Connect with Dr. James Alcock: Wikipedia Page: James Alcock   Book: Belief: What it Means to Believe and Why Our Convictions are so Compelling  Magazine: Skeptical Inquirer   Connect with Therese: Website: www.criticallyspeaking.net Threads: @critically_speaking Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net   Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Dr. James Alcock: Why We Believe

We all believe in something, from Santa Claus, to the global shape of the earth, to babies needing to be taken care of for survival. While some of our beliefs are intuitive or have evidence, many are not. Sometimes the evidence that we believe to be true is faulty. In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. James Alcock discuss how these beliefs are built, how we interpret situations to create beliefs, and why we, as a society, have so many common beliefs. As humans, we like to believe we are rational beings, but so many of our beliefs are happening automatically, without our conscious thought or from common teachings that we are all exposed to from those in authority. Therese and Dr. Alcock also discuss further complications regarding belief, such as conspiracy mentalities, imagination inflation, and memory contamination and the role that these elements of complication can play in trying to suss out what to believe in this world full of many shades of gray.       Key Takeaways: We cannot learn everything in one lifetime so, as a society, we come to rely on authorities and shared, inherited beliefs.  There is no evidence that people can bury trauma. The problem with trauma is people can't forget.  Due to mental desire to belief and idiosyncratic movements, humans often see things that are “magic” or “unexplainable” due to our own actions.   "The problem is, if we don't have the capacity and we don't have the motivation to critically examine the evidence, then we won't distinguish between evidence that really is factual and evidence which is wrong." —  Dr. James Alcock   Connect with Dr. James Alcock: Wikipedia Page: James Alcock   Book: Belief: What it Means to Believe and Why Our Convictions are so Compelling      Connect with Therese: Website:  www.criticallyspeaking.net Twitter: @CritiSpeak Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net     Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions.
