It’s been a big year for the Denison Big Red, and although that hasn’t completely trickled down to the Denison football team, we thought we’d check in with coach Jack Hatem. The North Coast Athletic Conference has definitely been in transition of late, with John Carroll joining the league in all sports, and WashU in football specifically, and Denison lost its rising junior quarterback, Tyler Green who elected to transfer. More about that in a moment. Hatem talks about how his team has to raise the level of its game to compete in a much stronger conference, what the quarterback situation will look like at Denison, what he’s learned from the national championship coaches at his school, why he stays in the game and why he loves recruiting when, in fact, he is pretty near retirement age. Plus, his taste in music. There’s also been a bunch of change at Susquehanna, where new coach Chris Pincince is a Division III head football coach for the first time, and is coaching in D-III for the first time in nearly a quarter-century. It’s a good thing he and former coach Tom Perkovich are old friends, because Pincince talks about the hole they were left, with eight players having transferred out and so far, the transfer portal only having brought one person in. But a number of assistant coaches stayed to help the program have continuity, giving Pincince a leg up on the D-III learning curve, and Region 2 Defensive Player of the Year Galen Limantour is back as well, which is a huge boost for Susquehanna. About Tyler Green — his transfer to John Carroll means Denison will still have to face him in conference the next two years, and JCU was in sore need of a quarterback for 2026. We’ll talk about that, plus answer your mailbag questions. That and more in this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast. Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
Christine Banfield's sister looked Brendan Banfield in the eye at his sentencing and told him she never truly knew him. Nobody did. Joseph Ryan's mother reminded a Fairfax County courtroom that her son had a face, a name, and a life full of meaning — and Banfield shot his face, soiled his name, and treated his life as garbage. Two families. Two lives destroyed. And the man responsible sat in front of them claiming the system had failed him.Judge Penney Azcarate sentenced Banfield — a former IRS law enforcement officer convicted of two counts of aggravated murder — to life without parole, plus consecutive time for child endangerment and a firearm charge. The murders of Christine and Joseph Ryan in Herndon, Virginia, on February 24, 2023, were the result of a months-long scheme Banfield devised with the family's au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães. He catfished Ryan using fake profiles impersonating Christine, lured him to the family home under false pretenses, then shot Ryan and stabbed Christine seven times in the neck. Their four-year-old daughter was in the basement. The day before sentencing, defense attorney John Carroll filed a motion to overturn the verdict. Three arguments. All denied. Then Carroll announced he would not represent Banfield on appeal. He told reporters his client needed fresh eyes — a polite way of saying there wasn't much left to argue. Banfield still plans to appeal. The odds of that changing anything are about as low as they get.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The biggest news for Division III football coming out of the NFL draft was, as usual, not about a player getting drafted. We are accustomed to that by now, sadly, and no amount of tweeting is going to convince the NFL to draft D-III players. But for Tyren Montgomery, the contract offer came. And for four additional players so far, the rookie minicamp invite arrived. And on this podcast, we talk to Montgomery, the former John Carroll wide receiver, now a member of the Tennessee Titans, about his route to the NFL. If you read our feature on Montgomery last September, you already know the back story. He talks about what he’s been working on since the season ended, how many calls his agent got on his behalf, what he likes about the Titans and why he chose them out of the number of offers he received. We also chat with Bethany coach David Blake, who joins the Bison this year and brings a number of new ideas to the sideline after a wide variety of past experiences, including flying jets in the Navy and then working for the Judge Advocate General’s office. How that experience plays out as a first-time head coach is really fascinating, and is worth a listen. This includes some interesting uses of music during practice and workouts, and a really unique title for one of his assistant coaches. Other topics of discussion include, of course, the demise of Anna Maria College and the Anna Maria football program, the future arrival of St. Anselm from NCAA Division II, the St. Francis schedule, the new WIAC commissioner and the intriguing Week 1 matchup between UW-River Falls and Southern Virginia. In addition, we take your questions on the following topics: What is our opinion on D-III schools scheduling teams? Who has set themselves up for a playoff bid? And how many games and teams are we able to watch per week? Ken Carman and Anthony Lima interview John Carroll wide receiver Ty Montgomery about his unconventional path to the NFL Draft. They discuss his transition from basketball to football through YouTube and Madden, as well as the profound impact of his late mother's vision for his career. The conversation also highlights his experience at the Senior Bowl and his interest in potentially playing for the Cleveland Browns.
Ken Carman creates a viral moment by squeezing into a tight jersey to celebrate the Cavaliers' playoff success. They debate the NBA's decision to move playoff games to streaming platforms and discuss the Browns' draft strategy regarding quarterbacks. Local standout Tyjon Montgomery shares his unique path from college basketball to becoming an NFL prospect
The NFL Draft is coming up this week, and Division III has had only three players drafted since 2012, all of them offensive linemen who were thought of quite highly and drafted quite highly: Ali Marpet of Hobart, Ben Bartch of St. John’s and Quinn Meinerz of UW-Whitewater. If Division III has a player drafted from any position other than O-line, it’s probably most likely to be Ty Montgomery of John Carroll, who we talked about back in Podcast 404. Why has it been so hard for D-III guys to get drafted lately? We bring in a player agent to talk about what he’s seen in two decades of representing Division III football talent, what NFL teams are looking for and what the prerequisite is before one ever even gets to a Pro Day. John Perez, who played D-III ball at William Paterson, talks us through it. It’s a new day at Loras, as the Duhawks have a new head coach in former St. John’s defensive coordinator Brandon Novak, are hoping to generate some buzz of their own in Dubuque, Iowa, and looking to take a step forward for a program which hasn’t won more than five games in a season since 2008. Novak has filled his key assistant coaching slots with some young guys, he inherits a non-conference schedule already laid out for him, and he has to adjust from wearing red for more than a quarter-century to purple. We also talk with Mike Phelan, whose first year as head coach at Franklin & Marshall was incredibly successful, as the Diplomats won their rivalry game and won the Centennial Conference’s automatic bid. He talks about NFL hopeful Gary Lewis, a wide receiver for F&M last year, plus Phelan talks about who his mentors are as a coach and who he gets advice from when needed. In addition, we take your questions on the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference managing to snag an automatic bid, and on Anna Maria College getting essentially a vote of no-confidence from the state of Massachusetts. Where might podcast co-host Patrick Coleman end up going for a game in Week 1 of this season? We discuss the story of Ithaca’s Derek Slywka and his pro football journey. And Patrick and fellow co-host Greg Thomas have some news about the immediate future of this podcast. Our guests on this podcast: Loras coach Brandon Novak, Franklin & Marshall coach Mike Phelan, John Perez of Perez Sports Associates. John Carroll & Neleh Dennis Talk Survivor 50 Survivor 50 heats up as host Rob Cesternino welcomes Survivor Marquesas favorites Neleh Dennis and John Carroll to reflect on the season's most unpredictable moves and heartfelt connections. As Survivor 50 leans into the theme of duos, this episode dives deep into how both old school and new school strategies are playing out, and what it really means to juggle loyalty, friendship, and competition for a shot at the title. Rob is joined by Neleh and John for a special recap, putting personal connections under the microscope as the classic Marquesas bond is contrasted with today's high-speed, twist-filled gameplay. The trio revisit the fallout from the duos twist, which shook up Tribal Council and forced players to pick partners with major stakes—prompting tough debates about whether to stick with your closest ally or team up with a challenge beast. They also dissect Coach's dramatic exit, weighing in on if his larger-than-life presence is entertainment or a strategic liability, and debate whether unpredictability is ever worth the risk. Other highlights from the discussion include the evolving impact of pre-game alliances, how old school favorites like Cirie and Jonathan are keeping pace in a faster, more advantage-heavy landscape, and which challenges or game elements Neleh and John wish would return for this landmark season. Insights into heartbreak and healing in the post-game, the real-life friendships that outlast the island, and Survivor's role in bringing personal growth and reunions to the forefront all round out the conversation. Among the memorable moments and big Survivor 50 questions: – How the duos twist upended alliances and forced cutthroat decisions – Coach's legacy as a Survivor character—and what makes a player too unpredictable – Old school versus new school: Is the social game still king, or do you need constant strategic hustle? – Neleh and John's honest reflections on regret, friendship, and what they'd do differently if given another shot – The rise of challenge threats and strategic partnerships as the merge looms With the jury still out on whether Survivor 50 will live up to the hype, join Rob, Neleh, and John as they debate who can outwit, outplay, and outlast in a season packed with history and high stakes. The Dynasty Nerds Show is back with Episode 2 of the 2026 wide receiver tape breakdown. Rich Dotson, Matt O'Hara, and Garret Price work through six receivers from their personal tape grades, and the early takeaway is that this class is notably cleaner than the running back group. There are no players the crew wants completely off their boards, which makes the tier separation between them all the more important heading into draft season. Carnell Tate opens the show and earns unanimous WR1 status. Garret's tape score of 79.18 puts him in the same all-time company as Ja'Marr Chase, CeeDee Lamb, and Malik Nabers. His 86% contested catch rate ranked third in the entire country, he had zero drops on the season, and the passer rating when targeting him was 151.8, best nationally. The crew calls him the safest player in the 2026 draft class and a multi-contract dynasty asset who wins in every area of the field. Germie Barnard draws a Robert Woods comp from the crew: reliable, smart, and landing-spot dependent for his fantasy ceiling. Malachi Fields is the most debated name on the show. His ball skills, catch radius, and physicality grade at an elite level, but only 36 catches at Notre Dame left too many questions about route tree and burst. Garret has him with a first-round grade. Zachariah Branch is viewed as a special teams ace and gadget piece with limited dynasty value, while Eric Rivers falls even further for the group due to poor hands and unrefined routes despite running a 4.35. The episode closes with a strong endorsement of small-school sleeper Tyren Montgomery, a former walk-on basketball player at LSU turned polished route runner out of John Carroll who turned heads at the Senior Bowl. The crew plans to draft him in rounds 4 to 5 as a high-upside stash with real development upside. The Coaching Carousel took many spins since we dropped our previous podcast, and it's time we caught up with those movements and get someone on the podcast! That honor goes to Michael Zweifel at UW-La Crosse, who replaces Matt Janus after Janus's move to Division II. Zweifel was one of two finalists who were UW-L coordinators, but he says there was no feats of strength competition with fellow Eagles staffer Tarek Yaeggi, who is a La Crosse alumnus and remains offensive coordinator. Key topics of conversation: Will Zweifel continue to call the defense? And how did the all-time record-holding wide receiver in NCAA Division III history make that transition from offense to defense in the first place? As a guy who grew up around the UW-Whitewater Warhawks program, where his dad was an assistant coach, who were his favorite Warhawks? What changes does Zweifel have in mind for the La Crosse program? WashU didn't change coaches, but the football program is changing conferences this season, and that means going from the CCIW, where North Central and Wheaton stood between the Bears and the playoffs, to the North Coast Athletic Conference, where the list of teams at the top is even longer: John Carroll, DePauw, Wabash, now WashU. Bears coach Aaron Keen talks about what kind of offseason preparation they are doing to get ready for nine new opponents this fall, the long career of former head coach Larry Kindbom, who coached Keen as a player and remained on as a full-time assistant coach up until retiring at the age of 72. We also finish our mini-tour of Division III football programs in Southern California which are being revived as we chat with Azusa Pacific football coach AJ Parnell. Parnell is a former Bethel quarterback and assistant coach who returned to the west coast to bring this football program back, after it had been dormant since 2020, and to bring some Division III experience to an athletic department which could use it, as the school reclassifies from NCAA Division II to Division III. Our guests on this podcast: UW-La Crosse coach Michael Zweifel, WashU coach Aaron Keen and Azusa Pacific coach AJ Parnell.

From space lasers taking out ballistic missiles to shocking crimes in sanctuary cities, today's episode exposes how modern military tech and political decisions collide with public safety. We break down the latest on U.S. Space Force directed energy weapons, Iran and Israel missile strikes, and a deadly incident in Fairfax, Virginia involving an illegal immigrant with a long criminal record. Episode Summary Today's show spans cutting-edge military tech, U.S. foreign operations, and domestic policy failures. Directed Energy & Space Force: Lasers from U.S. Space Force are now operational, tracking missile launches from Iran via infrared signatures. Over 200 Iranian ballistic missiles have reportedly been destroyed, along with dozens of launchers. Israel has similar technology. Precision strikes and next-generation space targeting are changing modern warfare, making conventional attacks less relevant. Trump's Calculus & Shock & Awe: Insights from interviews with Jonathan Carroll and John Carroll reveal how these technologies influence U.S. strategy in Iran and Venezuela, including the high-risk operation to extract Nicholas Maduro with minimal troops. Sanctuary City Tragedy: Back home, a shocking case in Fairfax, Virginia saw Stephanie Minter, 41, fatally stabbed by Abdul Jala, an illegal immigrant with over 30 prior arrests and a final deportation order ignored by local authorities. The incident raises questions about sanctuary city policies and ICE cooperation, highlighted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security press release. National Immigration Impact: Thousands of noncitizens with convictions for murder or sexual assault are reportedly released into the U.S., according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Investigative reporting reveals how even convicted sex offenders are released under federal policies, emphasizing gaps in safety and enforcement. Health & Addiction Update: New studies suggest popular weight-loss drugs may have unexpected benefits in addiction treatment, potentially helping those with alcohol or drug dependence. Today's episode exposes the intersection of advanced military technology, immigration policy, and public safety, asking Americans: who really has your protection in this country? Key Topics U.S. Space Force & directed energy weapons Missile defense in Iran and Israel Nicholas Maduro extraction operation Sanctuary city policy and Fairfax, Virginia murder case ICE detainers and enforcement failures (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) Federal & state conflicts over immigration law Weight-loss drugs and addiction treatment
ohn McClain reacts to the impending Tytus Howard and David Montgomery trades, Jerry Schuplinski takes over as QB coach, and the 2026 coaching staff is set. Plus flag football. Marc Vandermeer goes solo on a packed Wednesday night that covers the full spectrum from blockbuster trade reactions to girls flag football. Hall of Fame writer John McClain opens the show with his trademark candor on the week's two trades: he loves the David Montgomery deal — "some members of the national media were criticizing it and I don't understand why" — highlighting that Montgomery's 33 rushing touchdowns over the last three years dwarf the Texans' red zone production (Montgomery had eight touchdowns alone last year; the entire Texans backfield had nine). McClain predicts Nick Caserio will trade out of the first round for the second consecutive year, potentially acquiring three second-round picks, and sees as many as three new offensive line starters in 2026. On Tytus Howard, he understands the financial reality with the Will Anderson Jr. extension looming — Anderson "might be the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history." McClain also weighs in on the Colts' transition tag on Daniel Jones, calls the Anthony Richardson pick "one of the biggest mistakes in the history of the draft," predicts Alec Pierce lands with Drake Maye and the Patriots, and offers his skepticism on Kyler Murray's work habits. Marc then breaks down the 2026 coaching staff announcement, headlined by Jerry Schuplinski taking over as quarterbacks coach after Jerrod Johnson's departure. Marc details Schuplinski's extensive NFL résumé — Patriots (three Super Bowls), Dolphins, Giants, Raiders, Rams under Sean McVay — and cites glowing endorsements from Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jimmy Garoppolo about his specific impact on their development. He emphasizes that the John Carroll connection doesn't define Schuplinski; his decade-plus of NFL experience across multiple offensive systems does. Marc also celebrates the returns of Corey Undlin (defensive passing game coordinator) and Dino Vasso despite both receiving outside interview interest. The middle segment features Amon-Ra St. Brown's podcast comments on Montgomery's departure from Detroit — "He's an RB1 on 31 other teams... I told everyone, keep him on your fantasy team because he's about to go even crazier" — and Marc's deep dive into NBC's throwback NBA broadcast, complete with Houstonized versions of the classic NBC and CBS basketball themes tied to Rockets championship memories. The show closes with Brett Stewart, Director of Youth Football Development for the Texans, discussing the explosive growth of girls flag football — 130-plus high school teams across Texas, the push for UIL sanctioning, the combined Senior Showcase that drew 525 boys and 228 girls with 70-plus college programs offering scholarships on the spot, and the road to the 2028 Olympics. Marc and Brett also build an all-Texans Olympic flag football roster featuring C.J. Stroud, Derek Stingley Jr., Nico Collins, Calen Bullock, and Kamari Lassiter.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The guys examine the breakout practices and game footage supplied by this unknown receiver out of Woodlands, Texas. His early days as a basketball player has certainly helped him on the gridiron to where he has impressed many at Senior Bowl workouts. His dream of playing in the NFL is still a difficult one, but he's doing great things to make it a reality now. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The UW-River Falls postseason media campaign continued through the end of January, all the way through a parade through town and yes, one last interview with the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast about the 2025 season. Our guests on this podcast: UW-River Falls coach Matt Walker, John Carroll coach Brian Polian, and Whittier coach Cory White. It's the first episode of our 20th season, here on the longest running Division III football podcast. Is the next Falcons' quarterback on campus already, or is there a chance for a transfer for the fall? What did it feel like to lose some key players shortly after the championship into the portal? Which does Walker have more of, beers or championship hats? Those hard-hitting questions and more in this conversation with Matt Walker. Polian is brand-new to the job, but not new to college football head coaching, as the athletic director at John Carroll and the former head coach at Nevada. First off, we have to get his take on Ty Montgomery, who had a huge week in front of pro scouts at the Senior Bowl at the end of January, and we'll also hear how Polian plans to juggle both the head coaching and athletic director job, whose idea it was for him to apply in the first place, and what he told people who had interviewed for the role when he told them he was taking the job himself. Cory White is the new head coach at Whittier. It's a new day at Whittier, which is returning to the field after three years off. White says he would not have taken the job as the head coach of the Poets if not for assurances from the administration that they would do things better this time around. Hear about how many players the Poets have already (it's a big number) and where they expect to be in the fall, all with the team going through a strength and conditioning practice in the background on a beautiful January day in Southern California. That and more in this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast.
The 2026 Senior Bowl delivered underwhelming buzz compared to previous years, but Jagger May and Andrew Mott still found breakout performers and concerning tape. Mike Washington Jr. jumped to RB3 in Jagger's rankings with his 228-pound frame and receiving ability, while D3 sensation Tyren Montgomery from John Carroll measured in at 5'11" and impressed despite the competition level. The biggest surprise? This weak draft class is elevating prospects who simply did what they were supposed to do. Listen to This Episode:

Banfield, a former IRS agent, is charged with four counts of aggravated murder in the February 2023 deaths of his wife Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan at their Herndon, Virginia home.Prosecutors allege Banfield plotted the killings with the family's Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, with whom he was having an affair. Magalhães has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and is expected to testify against Banfield. Juliana Peres Magalhães is the prosecution's entire case—and she's a credibility minefield. She lied for over a year. She wrote jail letters promising to "take the blame" for Brendan Banfield. She told his mother she would "give my life for his." She only flipped after Banfield's arrest, after hospitalization from stress, and after his family stopped paying her legal bills. Now she's negotiating with Netflix while media producers fund her commissary. Does the Netflix deal destroy her credibility—or is it irrelevant to whether she's telling the truth? The prosecution closed with their strongest forensic evidence. Blood stain pattern analyst Iris Dalley Graff testified that Joseph Ryan's body was moved after death and Christine Banfield's blood was deliberately placed on Ryan's hands and clothing to frame him for her murder. The transfer patterns were "finger-like in shape"—consistent with someone touching him with blood-covered hands. Blood droplets on his forearm suggested dripping from above. The prosecution's entire case rests on one witness: Juliana Peres Magalhães. She's the only person alive who was in that bedroom when Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan were killed. She testified that she watched Brendan Banfield stab his wife to death. She admitted firing the second shot into Ryan's chest. But for over a year, she lied. She wrote letters from jail promising to "take the blame." She told Banfield's mother she would "give my life for his." Two bombshells dropped on Day 7 of the Brendan Banfield double murder trial in Fairfax County, Virginia.First, the defense landed a significant blow. Homicide Detective Leah Smith testified that leadership pushed the catfishing theory before evidence supported it. According to Smith, she was told: "There are two theories and you need to get behind the right one." Defense attorney John Carroll revealed a forensic analyst was removed from the case after theorizing that Christine Banfield — not Brendan — was communicating with Joseph Ryan on the fetish website FetLife. The defense argues investigators had tunnel vision from the start. Then came the prosecution's counter-punch. Victim services officer Saly Fayez testified that an intel detective overheard a conversation in a hotel lobby just hours after Christine's death. According to Fayez, Brendan's daughter Valerie asked the au pair Juliana Peres Magalhães: "Can I call you mommy now?" Juliana allegedly said yes. Then Valerie asked if Juliana would marry her daddy. The reported response: "I wish."Lt. David Giaccio testified that Juliana's account only confirmed what forensic evidence already indicated. Even Detective Smith admitted Banfield's arrest was based on evidence, not the au pair's testimony.Court resumes Friday. The defense is fighting back in the Brendan Banfield double murder trial, and today they brought the receipts.Day 6 opened with police body camera footage from the morning Christine Banfield died. The jury watched Brendan Banfield at the hospital, heard him ask about his daughter, heard the doctor tell him his wife's wounds were unsurvivable. And they watched him cry — both on the footage and again in the courtroom watching it back. But before any of that, defense attorney John Carroll tried to get Juliana Peres Magalhães' entire testimony thrown out. The judge shut it down cold. The au pair's words stay in the record. Then came the counter-attack. Defense blood spatter expert LeeAnn Singley disputed the prosecution's crime scene analysis and dropped a loaded statement: perpetrators sometimes self-inflict wounds. The implication hangs in the air. Digital forensics experts followed, building the case that Christine Banfield — not Brendan — may have been the one using FetLife.Child endangerment charges move forward. A snowstorm threatens to compress the trial timeline. And the jury has to decide whether Brendan Banfield's tears are evidence of innocence or the performance of a lifetime. We break down every moment from Day 6.#BrendanBanfield #HiddenKillers #AuPairMurder #ChristineBanfield #TrueCrimePodcast #FairfaxTrial #BloodEvidence #DefenseStrategy #JulianaPerezMagalhaes #DoubleHomicideJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The Commonwealth has rested its case against Brendan Banfield — and the final witnesses may have sealed the prosecution's narrative. Blood stain pattern analyst Iris Dalley Graff delivered hours of testimony explaining why the forensic evidence at the crime scene doesn't match an interrupted home invasion. Instead, she told jurors, the blood patterns suggest deliberate staging.Graff testified that Joseph Ryan's blood flowed in multiple directions — indicating his body was moved after he was shot. Even more damning: Christine Banfield's blood appears to have been intentionally transferred onto Ryan's hands, pants, and forearm. Graff described "finger-like" transfer patterns and blood droplets consistent with someone dripping blood from above. This directly supports Juliana Peres Magalhães' testimony that Banfield moved Ryan's body and smeared his dead wife's blood on the man to frame him.Defense attorney John Carroll attacked Graff's conclusions and highlighted body cam footage showing Banfield with bloody hands on his wife's neck when police arrived — suggesting a husband attempting first aid, not a killer staging a scene. After the jury was dismissed, Carroll moved to strike all charges, calling the au pair an unreliable witness. Judge Penney Azcarate denied the motion. The defense now takes over with four to five witnesses planned. ITL opens with a franchise-defining question for the Texans: Do you extend C.J. Stroud right now, and are the Texans actually as close to a Super Bowl team as they believe they are internally? The crew debates what Sunday's game really revealed and wraps the hour with a QOTD asking who could have played quarterback and still won. Around The NFL follows with major league news as the Titans hire Robert Saleh, the Dolphins bring in Jeff Hafley, and the Broncos announce Jarrett Stidham will start against New England in the AFC Championship, before ITL plays a free agency game to decide which position group the Texans should prioritize this offseason and closes with What's Popping in sports and entertainment. Attention then turns to the future of the Texans offense as ITL debates whether the team is truly in a position to start over yet again, mixes in Lunch-Time Confessions with Figgy scouting a potential Texans offensive coordinator from John Carroll, and wraps with College Football on a Tuesday: National Championship Edition. The show closes by confronting the toughest question of all — is C.J. Stroud broken, and can he realistically come back from this stretch — before Figgy's Mixtape delivers chaos with stories ranging from a killer elephant on the loose in India to a Cleveland radio host floating the idea of trading for Stroud, and more wild headlines.
** Correction: The only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence was Charles Carroll, not John Carroll. Although there are cousins from the same prominent Catholic family in Maryland **In the earliest chapters of human history, when humanity first awakened to the vast chasm that sin had torn between itself and God, the Almighty—rich in wisdom and mercy—established a system of sacrifice. To modern sensibilities, such practices may seem foreign, even unsettling. Yet these sacrifices were never barbaric rituals devoid of meaning. They were sacred signs, visible declarations of an invisible reality: sin creates a debt, and reconciliation demands atonement. The Israelites, chosen to bear divine truth in a world shrouded in darkness, obeyed this command with reverence. Each unblemished lamb placed upon the altar, each offering consumed by sacred fire, testified to the weight of sin and the desperate human need to be restored to God. The Temple sacrifices were not empty motions; they were solemn reminders that sin costs something and that holiness requires blood. And yet, this system was never meant to stand forever. No ritual, no matter how meticulously observed, could cleanse the human heart. These sacrifices were shadows, holy signposts pointing forward to a far greater reality, a redemptive plan set in motion “before the foundation of the world” (Ephesians 1:4). As Scripture declares, “it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins” (Hebrews 10:4). The altar prepared the way, but it could not complete the work. Then, in the fullness of time, the answer arrived.Jesus Christ entered the story, not as another offering, but as the offering. He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). In Him, the fragmented symbols of ancient worship are gathered and fulfilled. God Himself stepped into the brokenness of human existence. The eternal Word became flesh and dwelt among us, fully divine and fully human. On the cross, Christ carried the crushing weight of our guilt, spanning the infinite gulf that sin had carved between heaven and earth. The sacrifices of old were provisional, divine lessons training the hearts of God's people to recognize the magnitude of what was to come. In Jesus, sacrifice reaches its perfection. He is both High Priest and spotless Victim, offering Himself freely, not as a cold transaction, but as an act of unfathomable love. With His final breath, the Temple system met its completion, and the Savior's cry echoed through eternity: “It is finished” (John 19:30).Now, standing in the light of this finished work, we are confronted with a question that cannot be ignored. Do we grasp the depth of Christ's sacrifice? Have we allowed His love to transform us? Scripture calls us not merely to admire the cross, but to respond to it – offering our own lives as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God (Romans 12:1).In the Lamb of God, redemption is complete. --- Help Spread the Good News --- Father Brian's homilies are shared freely thanks to generous listeners like you. The Brendan Banfield murder trial begins Monday, January 12th, 2026. This is the complete breakdown of the case before opening statements. On February 24, 2023, police found Christine Banfield, 37, stabbed to death in her Herndon, Virginia bedroom. Joseph Ryan, 39, lay feet away — shot twice by two different guns. Christine was nude. Ryan was fully clothed. A knife, two firearms, and fetish sex accessories were scattered around the room. The Banfields' 4-year-old daughter was in the basement.Prosecutors allege Brendan Banfield, an IRS criminal investigator, conspired with the family's au pair Juliana Peres Magalhaes to murder his wife. They say the pair created a fake FetLife profile in Christine's name to lure Ryan to the house, then killed them both and staged it to look like self-defense against a home invader. But Fairfax County Police's own digital forensics expert contradicted that theory. Officer Brendan Miller analyzed 60 devices and concluded Christine appeared to be the one controlling the account. His findings were peer-reviewed and confirmed. Then he was transferred out of the unit. The prosecution's star witness is Juliana, who changed her story after a year in jail and got a deal to walk free if she testifies. She wrote to her mother: "I'm heartbroken for doing this to Brendan... But it's the right thing to do. For you. I want to be with you again."The lead prosecutor was removed after being cited for drinking at 8 a.m. Key evidence has been excluded. Defense attorney John Carroll says this is "a theory in search of facts."Four weeks. Cameras in the courtroom. A nurse and an innocent man are dead. The trial starts now.#TrueCrimeToday #BrendanBanfield #AuPairMurder #ChristineBanfield #HerndonVirginia #MurderTrial #JulianaMagalhaes #FetLifeMurder #TrueCrimeNews #FairfaxCountyJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISDOES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Brendan Banfield's murder trial starts Monday, January 12th. He's accused of killing his wife Christine and a stranger named Joseph Ryan in an elaborate plot involving the family's Brazilian au pair and a sexual fetish website. But the prosecution has a problem they can't explain away.Their own digital forensics expert said the evidence doesn't support their theory.Officer Brendan Miller analyzed 60 devices and concluded Christine Banfield appeared to be the one controlling the FetLife account — not her husband. His report stated there was "no indication that Christine lost control of her devices." He found she was communicating with multiple people on the site. His findings were peer-reviewed by the University of Alabama and confirmed. Then Miller was told he would "never be doing another digital forensics case" in the major crimes bureau. He was transferred. The lead homicide detective who also disagreed was moved off the case.Defense attorney John Carroll called it "a theory in search of facts rather than a series of facts supporting a theory."Now the entire case depends on Juliana Peres Magalhaes — the au pair who changed her story after a year in jail and took a deal that lets her walk free if she testifies. She wrote to her mother from jail that she was "heartbroken" to be doing this to Brendan but wanted to come home. The lead prosecutor was removed after being found drinking at 8 a.m. The child's interview was excluded as evidence. And it took nearly three years to get to trial.Christine Banfield was a nurse who spent her career helping sexual assault survivors. Joseph Ryan was a man looking for connection who walked into a trap. Both are dead. Somebody is responsible. Starting Monday, a jury has to decide if it was Brendan Banfield.#HiddenKillers #BrendanBanfield #AuPairMurder #ChristineBanfield #JosephRyan #FairfaxCounty #MurderTrial #TrueCrimePodcast #FetLifeMurder #CriminalJusticeJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISDOES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Our week in review examines the Brendan Banfield case — where digital forensics contradicted the prosecution's theory and two investigators were moved off the case.On February 24, 2023, Christine Banfield — a 37-year-old pediatric ICU nurse — was stabbed to death in her Herndon, Virginia home. Found beside her was Joseph Ryan, a 39-year-old stranger shot twice by two different guns. The initial story was self-defense against an intruder. Prosecutors say that's a lie. They allege Brendan Banfield created a fake FetLife profile using his wife's photo, spent months luring Ryan to the house under the pretense of a violent sexual fantasy, then conspired with the family's au pair to stage a home invasion and murder his wife. But the prosecution's own digital forensics expert reached a different conclusion. Officer Brendan Miller analyzed 60 devices and determined Christine — not Brendan — appeared to be running that FetLife account. His findings were peer-reviewed by the University of Alabama and confirmed. Miller was subsequently transferred out of digital forensics. The lead homicide detective who reportedly disagreed with command staff's direction was also moved.Defense attorney John Carroll called the prosecution's case "a theory in search of facts rather than a series of facts supporting a theory." Judge Penney Azcarate ordered prosecutors to produce communications related to those transfers. The case now hinges on Juliana Peres Magalhaes, who spent nearly a year facing murder charges before changing her story. Her plea deal: time served and deportation to Brazil in exchange for testimony against Banfield. Trial is January 2026. The jury will decide who was really behind the keyboard.#BrendanBanfield #ChristineBanfield #JulianaPeresMagalhaes #FairfaxCounty #DigitalForensics #AuPairMurder #FetLife #TrueCrime #HiddenKillers #WeekInReviewJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISDOES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The Brendan Banfield murder case has all the elements of a true crime nightmare — an alleged affair, a sex fetish website, a double homicide, and an au pair who flipped on her former lover. But the defense is pointing to something prosecutors would rather you ignore: the investigators who said the evidence didn't support the theory were removed from the case.Banfield, a former IRS special agent, faces four counts of aggravated murder in the deaths of his wife Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan at their Herndon, Virginia home in February 2023. Prosecutors allege Banfield and au pair Juliana Peres Magalhaes created a fake FetLife profile pretending to be Christine, lured Ryan to the home for a staged sexual encounter, then killed them both. But Fairfax County's own digital forensics expert, Officer Brendan Miller, analyzed 60 devices and concluded Christine appeared to be the one running the account. His report stated there was "no indication that Christine lost control of her devices" and that she was communicating with multiple people on the site. The University of Alabama peer-reviewed his findings and confirmed them.Miller was transferred out of digital forensics. The lead homicide detective who reportedly disagreed with command staff was moved off the case too. Defense attorney John Carroll called the prosecution's case "a theory in search of facts."Now everything rides on Juliana Peres Magalhaes, who changed her story after a year facing murder charges and took a plea deal for time served. In a jailhouse letter, she wrote she was "heartbroken" to be doing this to Brendan but wanted to go home to Brazil.Today we examine the defense perspective — and ask whether this investigation followed the evidence or forced the evidence to follow a theory.#TrueCrimeToday #BrendanBanfield #AuPairMurder #ChristineBanfield #HerndonVirginia #MurderTrial #JulianaMagalhaes #FetLifeMurder #TrueCrimeNews #ColdCaseJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISDOES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? One of the two semifinals was a classic, fit for kids from 1 to 92 ... if you can handle stress, that is. And we aren't just spouting cliches when we say this is as good as it gets -- in the history of the national semifinals since automatic bids were added and the playoffs expanded beyond four rounds in 1999, there have been only two years where both semifinals were close. It's far more likely that both of them are two-score games! So to get not just one good one, but one epic one, well, that's great. When Kaleb Blaha threaded the tiniest hole to find Blake Rohrer, and Rohrer ran untouched to the end zone for a 79-yard touchdown against Johns Hopkins, it not only sent the Falcons to the Stagg Bowl for the first time ever, it united a community, and was another memorable moment in a friendship between the two. They talk about it, how they met, how Blaha recruited Rohrer to come out for the UW-River Falls football team, and how the River Falls community reacted on Saturday night, in Around the Nation. 2016 Around the Nation column: Out of darkness, light, by Adam Turer, featuring the rebuilding UW-River Falls program At North Central, the Cardinals got the best passing performance of the season from Garet Wilson, and Jack Rummell had some amazing catches and runs. What did Wilson say to him before a third-and-8 play, and how did Rummell respond? We also hear from transfer defensive end Eli Renick, and chat with coach Brad Spencer about what's next for North Central as they head to their sixth consecutive Stagg Bowl. Plus, for Johns Hopkins, what does this run ending mean for the state of the program? And for John Carroll, it's the end of two years where Nick Semptimphelter was able to play football for the Blue Streaks with tight end Terrence Rawls, who was not just his high school teammate, but a literal member of his family. He talks about that, and coach Jeff Behrman talks about Semptimphelter. Patrick and Greg also hand out game balls and we take your questions in the mailbag. That and more in this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast. The D3football.com Around the Nation podcast is a weekly conversation about NCAA Division III football, and has been running since 2007.
Ken Carman and Anthony Lima discuss a "controversy" regarding John Carroll football's upcoming playoff game with North Central College and whether Lima - set to broadcast the game - should consider stepping down.
