BYRON – The Byron Tiger head football coach Jeff Boyer has been recently announced as the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) 2023-2024 Coach of the Year.“Coach Boyer's ability to inspire and develop our student-athletes, both on and off the field, has been nothing short of extraordinary,” states Byron CUSD athletic director Jeff Milburn. “It's a testament to his leadership and dedication to both his craft and our community. I couldn't be prouder of him.”Boyer, who has led the Tiger football team since 2012, is no stranger to awards. His teams have been represented in the IHSA State Championship Game four times. His Tigers earned runner-up finishes in 2018 & 2019 along with two State Championships in 2021 & 2023. Over that time, he has amassed 121 wins to only 27 losses, and his teams have qualified for the IHSA playoffs ten out of eleven seasons. When asked about receiving the award, Boyer is quick to credit others. “This award is truly a reflection of the amount of support that both I and our program consistently receive. Without the hard work of our players and coaching staff, the ongoing support from our parents, district staff and community, and the willingness of my family to allow me to invest a great deal of my time in something I truly love, this simply wouldn't happen.” Boyer also credits his high school coach, Everett Stine, and retired longtime Rochelle head coach Kevin Crandall, who he worked under prior to coming back to Byron High School, for a great deal of his program's success. “These guys taught me a lot about what it takes to be a good head coach,” Boyer states. “They represented themselves and their respective programs with nothing but class.”Boyer has this year's team poised to have another successful season. The Tigers are currently 6-0 and ranked number one in the State. They will finish up the last three games of their season at Winnebago on October 11, at Dixon on October 18, and at home against rival Stillman Valley on October 25. “He instills values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance in our students,” states Byron High School principal Andy Donaldson. “The impact he's had on our students will last a lifetime. Byron is fortunate to have him leading our program and our students.”Boyer is a 2000 Byron High School graduate and has been teaching mathematics for the district since 2008. He is married to his wife of 16 years, Rae, and they have three children who attend Byron schools: Hudson, grade 7; Hunter, grade 3, and Charley, grade 2.Source: https://www.byron226.org/o/bhs/article/1814230

This episode of the IHSA Safety Podcast is the final segment on the roles and legal requirements of Joint Health and Safety Committees (provincial legislation) and Workplace Health and Safety Committees (federal legislation) in Ontario, featuring IHSA's Alain Leger and Doug Heintz.JHSCs & WHSCs play vital roles in Ontario workplaces. Alain and Doug iterate that a key function of both committees is to conduct regular monthly inspections in the workplace. On the provincial level, worker committee members choose a certified member to inspect the workplace, and it is recommended that management workers complete inspections as well. From the federal perspective, no one individual is selected; every member is trained so they can identify hazards and concerns that other workers might overlook.Once a source of danger is reported after inspections, the committee members investigate the issue and make written recommendations to the employer to address the identified hazards. Certified members and their worker representatives can order the employer to stop work if it is considered too dangerous until hazards are properly controlled.Alain and Doug also address questions on best practices, such as steps to take if a committee cannot reach a consensus on a recommendation, what happens in the event of a worker's critical injury or death, and the kind of support the employer is expected to provide to the committee.Free ResourcesWorkplace InspectionsInspections ChecklistJoint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC)JHSC/Health & Safety RepresentativeGuideline for Health and Safety RepresentativesSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Reagan is a recent graduate from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she earned a degree in sociology with a double minor in biology and chemistry. During her four years at UNCG, she rediscovered her passion for equestrian sports after a seven-year hiatus, joining the UNC-Greensboro Equestrian Team and competing under the IHSA. In her final year, she served as co-captain, leading the team through the challenges posed by Hurricane Helene. Winter is pursuing a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Iowa, focusing her research on pulmonary function. Alongside her academic pursuits, she owns and operates Winters Riding Academy LLC, where she trains clients and their horses in hunter/jumper riding. Her passion for horses was sparked at a young age by her mother and further nurtured through her studies in Animal Science at Iowa State University. During her time at Iowa State, she was an active member of the equestrian club and gained valuable experience working at the Iowa State horse barns. Balancing her scientific career with her equestrian pursuits is a challenge she embraces with dedication and enthusiasm. Whether in the lab or at the barn, she brings the same level of commitment and passion to all her endeavors.
This episode of the IHSA Safety Podcast continues the discussion on the roles and legal requirements of Joint Health and Safety Committees (provincial legislation) and Workplace Health and Safety Committees (federal legislation) in Ontario, and features IHSA's Alain Leger and Doug Heintz. JHSCs and WHSCs play crucial roles in identifying hazards, improving workplace conditions, and ensuring compliance with legislation. In Ontario, one half of the committee members must be worker members chosen by the workers or, if in a unionized environment, they would come chosen by the trade union or the union itself. The other half of the committee members must be workers who exercise managerial functions, such as managers and supervisors. On the provincial side, certification is required for at least one worker and one management member of the committee. The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) has a training standard for JHSC certification, which is completed in two parts: Part One covers general knowledge and legislative requirements, and Part Two covers sector-specific hazards. On the federal side, it's mandatory for all WHSC members to be trained.Alain states that JHSC meetings must occur during regular working hours, which aligns with paid time. The minimum requirement for JHSC meetings is once every three months, while federal requirements for WHSC meetings are nine times annually. Alain and Doug also address other questions about committee meetings, such as how meeting agendas are prepared, how members are informed of upcoming meetings, and if a quorum is necessary to hold a meeting. This episode of the IHSA Safety Podcast discusses the roles and legal requirements of Joint Health and Safety Committees (provincial legislation) and Workplace Health and Safety Committees (federal legislation) in Ontario and features IHSA's Alain Leger and Doug Heintz.A Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) and a Workplace Health and Safety Committee (WHSC) are composed of workers and employee representatives who are mutually committed to improving health and safety conditions in the workplace. They help raise awareness of health and safety issues in the workplace, recognize and identify workplace risks, and develop recommendations to the employer to address those risks.Alain and Doug explain the differences in legislative requirements for a health and safety committee in provincial and federally regulated workplaces. For workplaces in Ontario with 20 or more employees, a Joint Health and Safety Committee is required, and it must have at least two members. For those with 50 or more employees, a committee must have at least four members. For federal requirements, workplaces with 20 or more employees require a Workplace Health and Safety Committee; however, there is no specification on the number of members required.Alain and Doug mention and define other committees in the workplace, such as the Worker Trades Committee (provincial) and the Policy Committee (federal). They also discuss the definition of ‘regularly employed' from both provincial and federal perspectives, to help determine if a Joint/Workplace Health and Safety Committee is required in a workplace. For the last two seasons of basketball at my son's school, I've watched this gentleman run back-and-forth while relentlessly trying to keep pace with the unwavering energy of middle school boys. Little pay, evening hours and most importantly an onslaught of unhappy customers makes officiating a job that I had to know more about. Listen as this Pesotum-adjacent lifer talks about his own sports history from the beginning. He even includes present day full-circle moments with his children's athletic endeavors. He is my husband's cousin who I never got to truly know until this delightful sit down. We dive into his side hustle as an IHSA referee, diffusing situations on the court, in the stands and on the bench and how he keeps his cool. Chaotic, overstimulating and high-stakes, how does he keep all of the pressure from boiling over? Good, respected refs are in high demand and it's no wonder why. Officiating isn't exactly a glamorized position. Whether umping baseball or tossing flags on the football field, you are often the punching bag during losses and simply background noise during wins. Not a lot of thanks for the ones that truly allow us to play ball. Thank you so much for listening!
