This homeowner was flabbergasted to see their listing was not only LIVE in the MLS (it was supposed to just be a "Coming Soon" home) but also that it was listed $75,000 less than what they agreed to. To make it worse, the next day the home was priced up by $25,000.Can an agent list your home before you are ready? Can they change the price of the home in the MLS without your consent? To dive into these issues, we recruited one of our favorite Dallas real estate agents, Steve Lester. Steve shares how not only should that agent have written consent to make any pricing change but also gives advice on how that homeowner should report their agent to the real estate commission. Steve also shares what questions you should be asking a listing agent before hiring them, how he strategizes a home sale, and how things look different in this changing market.

I thankfully stumbled upon Bob Burg and John David Mann's powerful book "The Go-Giver" after doing the right thing for a home seller but told by a manager I'd never be successful in real estate if I didn't put the broker's policies ahead of the consumer. I was crushed. Thankfully, the "The Go-Giver" confirms that providing value and authenticity in service to others is the foundation of a powerful business philosophy. And it provided the encouragement I needed to leave the the brokerage, and within 18-months exceeded my 6-figure goal. Join me as my gracious guest Bob Burg explains the book's 5 Laws for Stratospheric Success as we discuss: Making service--not money--the foundation of any business How Realtors can harness the power of The Go-Giver philosophy The danger of a Scarcity mindset The difference between operating on a "competitive plane" vs a "creative plane." How the number of lives you impact by providing significant value will lead to higher compensation Making your win about those you serve "Go-Giver" examples mentioned in this episode: Bruce Waller, Joanna Wiesinger, Jake Jordan, Steve Lester, Laura Agasian, Jake Melton Hope you enjoy this episode--certainly one of my favorite interviews of 2020. And check out his free Go-Giver selling course at www.Burg.com.
In this episode of Life with Lori, Lori Stai interviews Steve Lester of Fathom Realty to discuss the importance of developing a relationship with businesses through a community of networking. Steve is a respected and well-known realtor in Texas who also chairs Plano-based Master Networks, which is a forum for small businesses to network and build a family of referrals. What does networking do for small businesses? Steve says, “If you’re not networking, you’re not working. You’ve got to get out there and build trust.” Steve mentioned that this is particularly important for the small businesses trying to survive. What is going on with small businesses in this COVID pandemic? We hear everything from businesses barely getting by, businesses closing their doors, and others thriving with COVID being the best thing that happened to them. Why would this be? One word. Creativity. The businesses that thrive are creative, and meeting the customer where they are through relationships while also relying on their business network. The biggest difference in businesses that survive and those that don’t? Steve says it’s “transactional vs. relational. Relational business mindsets will always thrive.”So, what does building the relationship with the business actually do? “It builds trust” Steve says. “People’s trust is the ultimate compliment.” When trust is established with someone, they know they can rely on you and that leads to referrals. When a referral is made, you know that your name is associated with it, and the first thing that happens if that referral doesn’t work out is you will hear about it. Trust is very important in any relationship, and business relationships are no exception. An important component to networking is consistency. Face-to-face meetings remain imperative. Master Networks exist in several states, which allows face-to-face meetings to occur anywhere and with the Zoom environment, these meetings are easier than ever. We can conduct our business from a hotel room, the beach, or across the globe. What can a business do if they are struggling to stay alive? Steve says he believes in the TOMA (top of mind awareness) approach. Being in front of people on a consistent basis keeps you at the forefront of their minds. As he says, “Your best ability is your availability.” Also, building your network base helps where successes and challenges can be shared. The California Consumer Privacy Act, which is the first significant state privacy law passed in the U.S., takes effect on January 1, 2020 and it has broad implications for all but the smallest businesses. Under the terms of the new regulation, California-based companies that either generate more than $25 million in annual revenue, have personal information on at least 50,000 consumers or derive at least half of their annual revenue from selling customers’ personal information must disclose upon request what personal data it collects and whether that data is sold or disclosed. The law also gives consumers the power to have their personal data deleted upon demand. Iron Mountain has been preparing to comply with the law for some time, and it has defined a seven-step process for doing so. In this podcast, host Paul Gillin speaks with Steve Lester, Iron Mountain’s corporate counsel in its Privacy and Compliance team, and Kelly Matoney a principal partner in Iron Mountain's Information Governance & Digital Solutions Professional Services group, about each of the seven steps and what other businesses can learn from Iron Mountain’s experience.

After a White House meeting with CEOs of U.S. steel and aluminum manufacturers earlier this week, President Trump announced his intention to place tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. While members of the administration like Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross defended the move, domestic and international markets and governments responded very differently. The Dow plunged 500 points after the announcement, Canada threatened an “all-out” trade war and the European Union threatened to impose tariffs on American exports like bourbon. The president claims the tariffs benefit U.S. industries, but many who work in steel-dependent industries bear the scars of President George W. Bush’s one-year tariff on imported steel. Steve Lester, owner of QMF Steel, talks about the potentially disastrous consequences that President Trump’s tariffs could have on the steel business. Brandon Chrostowski, founder of Edwin’s Leadership & Restaurant Institute in Cleveland, Ohio, talks about his work trying to give former convicts a second chance at life through the restaurant business. “Knife Skills”, a documentary about Edwin’s, received an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Short.
