Holding the Ladder in Sport and Leadership

Dave Niland is our guest for this episode. He is the head men's basketball coach at National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Penn State Behrend in Erie, PA. He just completed his 30th season guiding the Behrend Lions program. He comes from a family of legendary Buffalo (NY) sports leaders. Niland has produced 29 winning seasons in the last 30 years to rank 20th among NCAA Division III programs for winningest teams of the decade. The Lions also have earned an NCAA or Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) postseason bid in 26 of the past 28 years. Niland is the all-time leader in men's basketball coaching victories with 580 entering the 2025-2026 season. The Lions have advanced to the NCAA Tournament eight times and has made 17 appearances in the ECAC South Region Tournament, winning the title in 1998-99 and 2009-10. Niland has been named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Coach of the Year seven times- a league and college record. His teams have won seven regular-season league titles and six conference tournament championships. In 2008-09, the men's basketball team forged a record of 18-10 and earned its third ECAC Tournament bid. The previous year, Niland led the Behrend Lions to an impressive 24-5 record, as the team captured the regular-season AMCC championship and the conference tournament before eventually falling in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament in Rochester, New York. That squad's defensive prowess was recognized for the second time in four seasons, as Behrend led NCAA Division III in scoring defense, limiting the opposition to a measly 54.6 points per game.  During the 2006-07 season, Niland's team posted an impressive 21-8 mark and advanced to the ECAC Southern Region Tournament Championship Game. The year before, Niland's program received the Schoenfeld Award, the highest honor the Collegiate Basketball Officials Association (COBA) bestows each year. This coveted award is presented to the team identified as having "the highest degree of sportsmanship, character, and ethics among their players, coaches and spectators."His 2003-04 team led all of NCAA Division III in scoring defense and posted a 22-3 record entering the NCAA Division III Tournament. The 1999-2000 team had the best season in school history, setting the school record for wins with 26 while advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight- the first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance for men's basketball. Also, in 1998-99, his squad earned the ECAC Southern Region Championship. Niland came to Behrend after spending four seasons as an assistant coach at Canisius College and one season at Elmira College. He was a four-year letterman and captain during his senior year as a basketball standout at LeMoyne College. He earned his master's degree in physical education from Canisius and is now also a lecturer in health and physical education at Penn State Behrend. Dave and his wife, Debra, who has over three decades of service at Erie Homes for Children and Adults empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities through volunteerism and exploration, are the proud parents of Andy, Sara, and Matt.

Was wollte man mehr?...hier weiterlesen: https://apolut.net/the-good-doctor-von-anke-behrend/ Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

David and Tamler share a few brief thoughts on the election and then raise some questions about Tucker Carlson being attacked by a demon as he slept in the woods with his wife and four dogs (still don't believe in ghosts, people?). In the main segment we talk about one of the most popular measures in social psychology – the cognitive reflection test (CRT). Originally designed to identify differences in people's ability to employ reflection (system 2) to override their initial intuition (system 1), this three-item measure has mushroomed into its own industry with researchers linking CRT scores to job performance, religious belief, conspiracy theorizing and more. But what psychological attribute is this test supposed to measure exactly, and how can we determine its validity? And has the dual process system 1/system 2 framework outlived its usefulness?  Tucker Carlson was totally mauled by a demon and not scratched by his dogs [youtube.com] Frederick, S. (2005). Quote:We talk about the effect of technology on everything, but ultimately, it's the people that matter." This theme has shown up repeatedly, emphasizing that technology doesn't have uniform effects; we have to consider the psychology of implementation, how it's used, and its context.Summary:In a thought-provoking episode of "People, Science, Inc.," Dr. Charles Handler sits down with Dr. Tara Behrend, a leading expert in the intersection of industrial-organizational psychology and technology. They explore the profound impact of technology, especially AI, on workplace dynamics, employee well-being, and organizational effectiveness. Dr. Behrend, with her extensive background in the study of how technology influences human behavior at work, sheds light on critical issues such as the ethical use of AI in hiring, the psychological effects of remote work technologies, and the future of learning and development in increasingly digital environments. In this engaging episode of "People, Science, Inc.," Dr. Charles Handler welcomes Dr. Tara Behrend, an esteemed Industrial and Organizational Psychologist and current president of SIOP. Dr. Behrend, also a professor at Michigan State University, shares her insights into the psychological implications of emerging technologies in the workplace, the role of AI in learning and connection, and the significance of career and technical education in addressing evolving workforce demands. With a focus on how AI and technology impact employee well-being, decision-making, and organizational dynamics, this conversation sheds light on the critical intersection of psychology, AI ethics, and workplace innovation.Take aways:Balancing AI and Ethics in Hiring: The discussion reveals that while AI can streamline the hiring process, it requires a careful balance to ensure ethical application. Dr. Behrend stresses the importance of transparency and continuous oversight in AI systems to mitigate biases and uphold fairness, providing a blueprint for organizations to follow.Adapting to Remote Work Technologies: Insights from the episode illustrate that successful remote work depends not just on the technology used but on how it's implemented. Strategies for maintaining communication, fostering collaboration, and sustaining engagement in remote settings are crucial for preserving company culture and employee well-being.Innovating Learning and Development: Dr. Behrend points out that technology's role in learning and development extends beyond access to information. It involves creating adaptive systems that tailor learning experiences to individual needs, promoting more effective skill acquisition and career growth.Understanding the Psychological Impact of AI: One of the pivotal learnings is the nuanced psychological impact of AI on employees, including feelings of trust or mistrust towards automated systems. Companies are encouraged to foster an environment where technology serves as a support, not a replacement, enhancing job satisfaction and productivity.Navigating Technological Change: The episode underlines the necessity for both organizations and employees to remain agile amidst technological advancements. This involves fostering a culture that values upskilling, reskilling, and continuous learning as essential components for thriving in the evolving workplace landscape.Addressing Surveillance in the Workplace: Through her insights, Dr. Behrend highlights the increasing use of surveillance tools in monitoring employee productivity and behavior. A key learning from her work is the critical need for ethical guidelines and transparent communication about the use and purpose of surveillance technologies. Organizations must balance efficiency and privacy concerns, ensuring that surveillance practices are implemented with respect to employee autonomy and trust, thereby preventing potential negative impacts on morale and workplace culture.

When a traumatic breakup sent her into a spiral of deep grief and despair, little did Gail Behrend suspect that this event would trigger a spontaneous spiritual opening that would forever change her life.  In the journey of healing her broken heart, she discovered the subtle world of human energy and the hidden dynamics that affect us all in relationships and in life. How was it no one had taught us about something so essential to our health and well-being?  She resolved to do something about it! Thus her passion for the world of human energy was born, and it has become her life's mission to demystify human energy in fun and enjoyable ways by teaching people the practical skills to own their energies, so that they can truly own their life! In this episode, you will learn: Because of our culture's focus on being active, we believe we need to be expanded all the time, even to the point of using drugs or junk food to boost our energy. Fighting our natural contraction cycle can lead to burnout or physical exhaustion.  The contraction phase allows our creativity to integrate what we learned earlier and gestate new ideas. Then when the next expansion phase begins, those ideas come to the surface for you to bring into the world. The best way to overcome burnout is to manage your energy wisely in the first place. If you are already burned out, it will take a deeper contraction to help your energy to recover. Bad college football, like that place in Ypsilanti with the ashtray for a football field. It's Short Time Shots. I'm Jason Bryant.Wilmington's program hasn't been back that long, but the Quakers picked up a competitive 27-26 criteria win over Muskingum in what was decided by the FOURTH criteria. Can you name the fourth criteria without looking it up? Most can't, so don't be down on yourself. It's most near fall points. The teams were tied in wins at five, tied in six-point victories with three each and tied with match points at 33 apiece. So it was Wilmington's 10 nearfall points to Muskingum's seven that was the difference. But when I wrote that first line, it got me digging. Coach Chris Basford is in his second year there and he started last season inheriting a roster of four guys. He ended with six. He's got 20 now and trying to create some type of positive culture there.“This was a total team effort. It was a great win for our young program... the first in 6 years. It was priceless to see the faces of the guys getting their first college win to go along with a team win. They did a great job battling and picking each other up,” said Basford. So when was Wilmington's last official dual win? Best I can find using the internet and all its archives - January 5, 2010 … which was a 25-22 win over Baldwin Wallace, which, was NOT good then.Speaking of Baldwin Wallace, they blanked Heidelberg 51-0 and what was dubbed MUSTACHE MANIA! I don't know what Mustache Mania was, but it didn't really matter what it was for Baldwin Wallace as they had four techs and three falls among their bonus victories. The fastest fall came at 197 pounds from Carter Lloyd, who got the match-ender at 1:50. In case you're wondering, Coach Gibbs' Baldwin Wallace team came into the season ranked third.Zac Stray's major decision at heavyweight completed a large comeback by Otterbein as the Cardinals upended Mount Union 20-18. Otterbein was down 15-3 after four bouts and 15-6 halfway through the dual. North Central beat Carthage 44-3.Saint Vincent's return to competition after 50 years away from the sport came up short as Penn State-Behrend bested the Bearcats 26-17 in Latrobe. The first win in the program's revived history came from 133-pounder Ryan Klingensmith out of Kiski Prep. Behrend's Matthew Caldwell's tech fall at 197 sealed it for the Lions - yes, pretty much all of the Penn State branch campuses are Lions or Nittany Lions or Roaring Lions or Tea Sipping Lions or something. In Division II, Coker edged Emmanuel 21-20 in a Conference Carolinas dual, with Coker heavyweight Hamilton Cooper getting an 8-0 major decision at 285 pounds to give Coker the win. But the win actually didn't come on the extra bonus point. Emmanuel was docked a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct, so instead of the major sending the match to criteria, Coker won outright. And here's the gut-punching kicker - Emmanuel would have won on the third criteria, most match points, 48-47. Uffda. Also in the conference, Newberry beat Emory & Henry 51-6. The Wolves picked up five falls in the victory over the Wasps, who are transitioning from Division III to Division II.McKendree beat Kentucky Wesleyan 42-12. Quincy beat NAIA Missouri Baptist 32-20.In the NAIA, St. Ambrose heavyweight Jeremiah Morris picked up a 6-3 win over Sam Fleming lifted the Bees past host Graceland 18-17. On the women's side, North Central's women also beat Carthage, coming away with a 38-3 win in CCIW action. Fastest fall of the night came at 130 pounds where two-time All-American Amani Jones got the touche in 41 seconds. The Cardinals are 8-0 already to start the season. Missouri Baptist's women beat Quincy 30-14.A metric crap ton of news, much more than this, can be delivered to your inbox daily. On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Per Axberg, an entrepreneur with a rich background in building customer-facing support solutions in Web3. Clemens spent over 5 years building Bitpanda's customer community department from scratch and scaling it from pre-seed to unicorn status. And it is important to understand that the power of web3 is in building unique communities. During their deep dive, Clemens and Sabine talk about: His interest in Web3, Bitcoin and Crypto, why he believes that those 3 components are key to build unique communities, and Clemens shares a few tips for those of us interested in learning and trialling such technologies. KEY TAKEAWAYS          From 2017 to 2022, I led and set up customer support at Bitpanda, the first Unicorn in Austria and a neo-broker that offers all asset classes from cryptocurrencies, stocks, and commodities to almost four million customers 24/7, 365. In my youth I played a lot of computer games and realised that you could earn money because people were selling items. So I launched my first business, an online shop for virtual items. Though this I discovered my passion for customer support and keeping my 1,000-2,000 clients happy. This biggest mistake I made was relying on 1 payment method. Then a friend of mine showed me BitCoin and that was the solution to my problem. After that, I started purely focussing on cryptocurrency. The most important thing that people need to realise when building a unicorn, especially in the crypto industry: Crypto is 24/7, it's not like the stock market that closes on a Friday afternoon it's also on the weekends. Out key success factor was being based in Austria and we had an impressum, which is not that typical for the crypto industry, people never knew where the location of their finances were, but this gave us a transparency and also trust from our clients. It meant we were always reachable with 24/7 support. Bitcoin was the first of the cryptocurrencies and I would say the only really decent one, all the other cryptocurrencies are copies because the source code of Bitcoin is open source and everybody can publish and own cryptocurrencies. They symbolise companies, so investing into Bitcoin and into cryptocurrencies are two very different things and have different risks. People need to do research before investing.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Last century private currencies had been predicted, so the concept behind Bitcoin is not that new, it's just beautiful to see how it's now come into practice.'‘In Web2 you log in to a page and there's a Google SSO with just a username and an email, in Web3 you connect with your wallet, you can transfer financial data on the blockchain.'‘Bitcoin's uptime is still amazing: Over 99.9% with only a few outages of a few hours or so, the last of which was 10 years ago. When compared to traditional payment methods like Visa, Mastercard or even Swift, Bitcoin is doing great. '‘Make it as easy as possible for your customers to complain, because the biggest issue to any business in Web3 is when you have people who silently quit and don't tell you why. When you receive a complaint see it as a last chance to convince the person to stay.' ABOUT THE GUEST Clemens holds a BSc degree in Economics and has a rich background in building customer-facing support solutions in Web 3. Life fills all space, and through the understanding and use of Life's laws, you can give direction to a particular quality of creative force, which, if held in place by the will, is absolutely certain to reproduce in a corresponding physical form. What every human being wants is more liberty and more joy in life. From whatever angle you study the subject of Life, you will find that degrees of livingness and liberty are invariably manifested by varying degrees of intelligence.  What you would term inanimate life represents the lower forms of intelligence; in plant life you recognize a higher degree of intelligence. To illustrate this, look at a flower. Is it not beautiful? Does it not prove to you the indisputable presence of a Great Intelligence which is expressing itself as beauty, form, and color, and above all, joy?
