Jeannette talks to Tricia Brouk, an award-winning director, author, producer, and founder of the Big Talk Academy. Tricia shares valuable insights on public speaking, personal branding, and utilising social media effectively. She emphasises the importance of authenticity, vulnerability, and consistency in building a personal brand, with her invaluable insights being grounded in her experience of helping thought leaders and speakers find their voice and share their stories authentically. KEY TAKEAWAYS Tricia highlights the five-part structure for crafting a compelling speech: identifying a problem, introducing new ideas, painting a picture, telling a story, and providing a solution with a call to action. This structure helps speakers engage their audience effectively. By gradually increasing pressure levels, individuals can learn to coexist with their physiological responses and deliver impactful speeches. Speakers need to share from a place of authenticity and vulnerability, allowing for deeper connections and impactful storytelling. By staying consistent, aligned with values, and offering value consistently, speakers can shape a strong personal brand that resonates with their audience. BEST MOMENTS "If you are listening to this and you're on the fence about social media, just be yourself and be consistent and you will attract the right people." "Personal brand is, like you said, extremely important. And when it comes to shaping a personal brand, in my experience, it means being consistent." "It's all about trusting yourself. You know yourself better than anyone else." “Today is the day, tomorrow might never come. And if you show up in love, then you can trust that all is right with how you lived your life." This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It's never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANCE. Academy Award season is here, but while the rest of the world may be debating which half of the Barbenheimer phenomenon will take home the most trophies, at Let's Hear It we're putting all our chips on Best Documentary Short nominee “The Barber of Little Rock,” co-directed by Christine Turner and our dear friend John Hoffman. Eric and John reunite to talk about the extraordinary film John has co-directed. They appeal to foundations to fund more documentary films, and they marvel at the movie's amazing protagonist Arlo Washington as he opens a Community Development Financial Institution to create opportunities for members of his community. Take a few minutes to watch this incredible story, produced in partnership with the New Yorker. You can find the 34-minute documentary on the New Yorker website and on YouTube. The island of Kinmen is a small island with a potentially big problem. Situated just off the coast of China, but part of Taiwan, Kinmen would likely be the first line of defense should the Chinese government decide to invade Taiwan. Emmy-nominated director S. Leo Chiang, who was born in Taiwan, worked in China and also lived for years in the U.S., explores the complex relationship between place, identity and politics in his insightful and masterfully crafted documentary short “Island in Between”. Joining Ken on the pod, Leo and producer Jean Tsien delve into the backstory of Kinmen — a flashpoint between Taiwan, China and the U.S. going back to the Chinese Civil War —and its present day role as a tourist spot, military base and home to thousands of people who live betwixt and between. Leo and Jean also illuminate how their personal backstories of growing up in Taiwan informed the making of the film and what makes their creative partnership so special. “Island in Between” has been nominated for the Oscar for Best Documentary Short. It can be streamed on The New York Times Op-Docs site. The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix. Follow: @SLeoChiang on Instagram and twitter @topdocspod on Instagram and twitter

The fact that Arlo Washington, featured as the main protagonist in John Hoffman and Christine Turner's inspiring documentary “The Barber of Little Rock”, is, indeed, a barber is almost beside the point. From owning one and then multiple barber shops, to founding the Washington Barber College and starting People Trust Credit Union, the first minority-owned financial institution in Arkansas, Arlo is a force of nature. He's always thinking of new ways to address issues of equity in the Black community and create generational wealth. Joining Ken on the podcast, John Hoffman describes not only Arlo's big picture ideas but also his deep compassion for those in need and his unique ability to truly listen to others. Once Arlo mastered the arcane details of Community Development Financial Institutions, he was off-and-running, creating the only bank in a Black neighborhood that previously had none. A single bank won't reverse decades of discrimination, but one barber has made a remarkable head start. “The Barber of Little Rock” has been nominated for the Oscar for Best Documentary Short. Producer and co-director Trish Adlesic joins Ken to discuss what's at stake in school and public libraries and why it is so critical that we listen to young people about what is being denied to them when books are taken off the shelves. “The ABCs of Book Banning” has been nominated for the Oscar for Best Documentary Short. More about Tia Nomore Coming up in cypher circles and freestyle battle arenas, Tia Nomore forced her entry into hip-hop's boys club. Now a fully realized artist and experienced Oakland emcee with three records under her belt — 2019's Level, 2018's Gooney Tunes (alongside Bruh from Last Night and MVCK) and 2016 Halloween— Tia's fiery wits, lyrical dismantling and command for respect, continue to bring her to new bold artistic territory. The past two years have seen her sharing stages with Princess Nokia and Smino, and releasing singles “DRIP” and “Skirmish,” two addictive collaborations with fellow Town girl and rapper Stoni. Fr3deR1cK Taylor's new film ""Where Is America The Beautiful?" is screening at 4:30 PM (Pacific) at Dances With Films the same day that this podcast releases! If you happen to be listening on June 27, 2023, rush over to the Hollywood & Highland and catch the film! And if it is after that date, maybe go to tomorrowpictures.com or tomorrowpictures.tv to find out where you can see it. This was Fr3deR1cK's third time as a guest on this podcast and I nearly named this episode "Fr3deR1cK & Jeff Shoot the S**t, Part 2" but, since he took time out of his busy festival schedule to stop by the Film Invasion Los Angeles opening night mixer and come see me again to shoot the shit, it only makes sense to name the episode after the new film that, sadly, wasn't at a festival that I program. For the record, his Documentary Short "Pre-Existing Freedom" was an Official Selection at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2021 and took home the award for Outstanding Performance by an Individual, Documentary. The Documentary Short, ANASTASIA spotlights the life of Russian civil rights activist Anastasia Shevchenko as she faces the brutal repercussions of speaking out against her government. She endured house arrest for two years, and became the first person found guilty of “organizing activity of an undesirable organization” by a Russian court, for her work with the Open Russia movement. Amnesty International declared her a “prisoner of conscience.” While Anastasia was under arrest, her teenage daughter Alina was hospitalized and died alone, becoming an early example of the Russian regime's willingness to use the separation of parents and children as a way to silence dissent. This intentional rupture of the parental bond is a denial of the elemental human right to care for our children. The spiritual and emotional burden that Anastasia carries makes her determination even more remarkable, as she continues to raise her two other children. One morning she gathers them, and her elderly mother, and takes a train across Russia to the Black Sea, a journey that this intimate story captures with poetic visual grace. Against the bright horizon, they come to terms with the family's loss, and Anastasia realizes the only way she can continue to fight is to leave her homeland. Director Sarah McCarthy joins us for a conversation on a woman facing down an authoritarian regime, the loss of her daughter, the daunting challenge of pulling together her shattered family for a final tribute to her departed daughter. MEMORABLE MOMENTS “When I can support influencers and thought leaders and professionals in sharing their powerful message in an effective, potent way, the ripple effect of the good goes beyond that moment on stage. And that's why I get up every single day.”“Influential voice means you can be sitting across the table from your kids. Everything you say has an impact. And when you know how to say it, and you've got technique behind how to say it, and you've got performance technique on how to deliver it, you then become influential.”“Whatever it is you do lead with ‘Speaker.' Be extremely obvious, tell people you want to speak.”“It's super important that you take action in order to make the desire of speaking a reality.”“If you desire to speak and you've got communities, reach out to those organizers or those community leaders… and give yourself the opportunity to speak and always have something in return.”“You deserve to be compensated, you are the expert, you have put a lot of time and effort into your presentation and you deserve to be compensated.”“If we keep perpetuating not being paid as women, we will keep not being paid. So together, we have to collectively stop doing that. So that collectively we all start getting paid.”“We are at a precipice right now. And the only way we can save the planet and humanity is by becoming conscious as leaders. It's our responsibility to speak with dignity, curiosity, humility, respect and love, so that we can move the needle towards what's good.”“This is a technique, you can't get on stage and hope you're good. That's why understanding objective, action, and what you want from the audience and how you're going to get it is super, super important.”“I support speakers who desire communication skills, desire the visibility, desire the platform, in order to roll up their sleeves, talk about what they think that they need to talk about and why it's important, so that we can literally change policy on this planet.”“Confidence comes from the inner truth of knowing that you're enough, of knowing that your voice matters, and knowing that you have something to contribute.” Connect with Tricia:⭐ Connect on Instagram @tricia_brouk⭐ Connect on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/triciabrouk/ ⭐ Connect on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/thebigtalkwithtriciabrouk ⭐ The Influential Voice Book https://www.theinfluentialvoicebook.com/ ⭐ TheBigTalkwithTriciaBrouk Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-big-talk-with-tricia-brouk/id1151802385 Connect with Allison:⭐ Connect on Instagram @allisonwalsh⭐ JOIN OUR FREE COMMUNITY: https://www.facebook.com/groups/shebelievedshecouldcommunity⭐ Check out book recommendations from the show here⭐ JOIN the 12 week #CrushyourGoals challenge group today by clicking this link.
