Episode 133 Doe ID: Pam Wittman In November, 1980, a road crew doing work along I-95 in Volusia County, Florida, discovered human remains. A medical examiner concluded that the victim was a young woman, but she carried no ID. The strongest clue was a shirt she was wearing with the caption 'Do it in the dirt' on the shirt. Because local police had no missing persons cases that might be a match for the remains, her case went cold, and she was known locally as 'Jane Doe 1980' Police had little to go on but they caught a break when a serial killer named Gerald Stano was caught, and began to share details of his victims. Stano was thought to have dozens of victims in Florida, and other states. He gave details that left little doubt in the mind of investigators that he had killed this Volusia County Jane Doe. Even knowing who had murdered her, they didn't know who she was. Eventually DNA & genealogy came together once again to give this Jane Doe her name back. She was Pam Wittman. Pam from Martinsville, Indiana, had lost touch with her family after moving to Florida and taking a job as an exotic dancer, and sex worker. For years, her family wondered what happened to her. Now they know she died at the hands of a brutal serial killer who is sure to have many more victims. Stano was put to death in Florida's electric chair. After four decades, this Jane Doe has her name back; it's Pam Wittman, and this is her story. Why the WARRIOR MINDSET (Courage, Resilience & Purpose) matters in Law Enforcement & in Life | 176 See this Episodes complete SHOW NOTES at https://www.ontheblueline.com/podcast-show-notes EPISODE OVERVIEW Introduction (00:00:31:13 - 00:01:54:07) Introduction to the podcast, emphasizing that while it is a law enforcement podcast, it offers something for everyone. I encourage listeners to engage through social media, email, and reviews, highlighting the importance of listener interaction and feedback. The Story of the 300 Spartans (00:01:54:07 - 00:07:07:20) I start with a powerful retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae, where 300 Spartans faced an overwhelming Persian army. This historical narrative is used to illustrate the "warrior mindset"—the idea of standing firm in the face of impossible odds, which I then tie to modern-day challenges. I connect the ancient story to the present, suggesting that the principles of courage, discipline, and resilience exhibited by the Spartans are still applicable, particularly to law enforcement officers. Modern Examples of the Warrior Mindset (00:07:07:20 - 00:12:54:03) I share a recent story of a Volusia County deputy rescuing a missing child from a pond. This real-life incident exemplifies the warrior mindset in action—acting decisively in high-pressure situations. I touch on a social commentary made by Elon Musk, drawing parallels between popular resistance in fiction (e.g., "The Hunger Games," "Star Wars") and the reluctance to engage in real-life challenges. I use this to underscore the importance of recognizing and acting on one's principles in reality, not just in theory. Key Principles of the Warrior Mindset (00:12:54:03 - 00:18:38:09) Courage in the Face of Adversity: I discuss the necessity of courage, not just in professional situations but in personal life as well. I emphasize that resilience should be a daily practice, not just reserved for crises. Mental Toughness Under Pressure: The ability to stay calm and focused under stress is highlighted as a crucial aspect of the warrior mindset. I connect this to both professional responsibilities and personal challenges. Commitment to a Higher Purpose: I conclude by stressing the importance of having a clear "why"—a sense of purpose that drives one's actions. This purpose is what sustains individuals through difficult times and allows them to inspire others. Overall Themes of the Podcast: Integration of Personal and Professional Life: I repeatedly emphasize that the warrior mindset is not just for the job but is a way of life. The qualities that make a good law enforcement officer—courage, resilience, and purpose—should also guide personal decisions and interactions. Call to Action: There is a strong motivational element throughout the podcast. I call on the listeners, especially those in law enforcement, to adopt and embody the warrior mindset both on duty and in your everyday lives. Travis McBride, a 46-year-old therapist specializing in anger management and the owner of Starting Point Mental Health in DeLand, Florida, has been charged with first-degree premeditated murder. McBride stands accused of fatally shooting 52-year-old Clinton Dorsey as part of an ongoing dispute, with police discovering Dorsey's body stuffed in the trunk of McBride's car. The incident unfolded when police responded to a "suspicious" call on South Frankfort Avenue on Thursday morning. Eyewitnesses reported seeing McBride dragging the victim's body across the road, placing it in his car, and later returning to clean the crime scene. DeLand police discovered shell casings and blood at the scene, leading them to the grim discovery of Dorsey's bullet-riddled body inside McBride's red Nissan Versa. Police were alerted to the slaying on Thursday morning through multiple 911 calls, as detailed in McBride's arrest affidavit. An unidentified caller reported to a 911 dispatcher that a murder had occurred, describing a person "looking in the road cleaning up the blood off the ground and searching for shells." According to the document, the caller identified the alleged killer as "Travis" and revealed the victim's name as "Clint." The caller stated that the perpetrator had dragged the body across the road, placed it in his car, and then left the scene. Another 911 caller, in a separate account, mentioned that the suspect was standing in front of a DeLand address. When pressed for clarity by the 911 dispatcher, the caller began whispering and disclosed that "a murder was committed last night." DeLand is approximately 40 miles north of downtown Orlando. Upon locating McBride, police observed a scratch on his arm and a red mark. McBride claimed these injuries were caused by his dogs, as stated in the document. Simultaneously, another officer spoke with the second 911 caller, who expressed fear of McBride. According to Police Chief Jason Umberger, there was an apparent ongoing dispute between McBride and Dorsey, although the nature of their relationship remains unclear. Witnesses reported McBride's prior threats against Dorsey, with one neighbor recalling a visit where McBride expressed his intent to kill the victim over a dispute involving glass in a jar allegedly meant for his dogs. McBride, despite his profession as an anger management specialist, has a history of legal troubles. His extensive rap sheet includes arrests in 1995 and 1996 for felony aggravated battery, as well as a 2017 arrest for domestic battery by strangulation. Despite these incidents, McBride completed deferred prosecution agreements in some cases. The suspect attended the University of Central Florida, earning degrees in psychology in 2005 and clinical psychology in 2007. McBride previously owned Central Florida Mental Health before establishing Starting Point Mental Health in 2009, emphasizing a commitment to building trusting relationships with clients and addressing a variety of mental health concerns. Travis McBride appeared in court on Friday and did not enter a plea. He is currently held without bond at the Volusia County jail, facing charges of first-degree premeditated murder. Cassadaga, Florida is an unincorporated community in Volusia County, which is on the east coast of Florida. Cassadaga was founded by well known "Seer of Spiritualism" George P Colby. George was a trance medium, meaning he would conduct seances with the dead by going into a trance and allowing a spirit to speak through his body. He formed relationships and bonds of trust with a few special spirits, who became his spirit guides and would communicate through him to the human realm on behalf of other spirits. One of these spirit guides was a Native American man named Seneca, who told George that he was destined to be instrumental in founding a Spiritualist community in the south. Seneca gave George a vision of his future home, and George left Cassadaga, NY to find Cassadaga, FL. The land that is known as Cassadaga, FL hosts The Southern Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp Meeting Association, where like minded people attend meetings, seances, and lectures on all things Spiritual. If you are looking for a discount car, truck, sunglasses or even office equipment there is one place to find it all. A quick look at the George Gideon Auctioneers website reveals many of the local governments in Central Florida use them to sell their surplus items. Right now a 2012 Dodge Charger from the Brevard County Sheriff's Office is going for $1,025, a kayak from the Osceola County Sheriff's Office is going for $3, Seminole County Public Schools is offering several school buses that have not been bid on yet. Volusia County is selling a 2018 ambulance. The current bid is $1,000. Pam Wilsky is the Purchasing and Contracts Director with Volusia County. She joined Matt Austin and Ginger Gadsden on Florida's Fourth Estate to talk more about how the surplus program works. She said the items people buy from the county through the auctioneer website may have a few miles on them but are well maintained. “We try very hard with this program to keep the lifecycle good so that what we are sending still has residual value when we get ready to send it to auction, so it's not broken down, it's not beat up,” Wilsky said. “It's not to say that there will not be some things wrong with it, but everything within the county is maintained on a regular basis, so it probably is a good value as far as a vehicle to somebody.” She said there have been some interesting finds at the auction and that the county once re-sold a mosquito control helicopter. “They actually had one that for whatever reason had been disassembled and they wanted to sell it. The appraised value was $350,000,” Wilsky said. She said a firm in Montana sent a truck to pick it up and used it to fight wildfires out west. Austin said he also noticed some drones on the auctioneer's website going for as low as $27 after Gov. Ron DeSantis made it illegal for counties to use ones from China. Wilsky said Volusia County dealt with the situation differently, but “a lot of law enforcement and things like that had a lot of these and it was a big impact so I'm not surprised you saw them.” Aside from providing a savings opportunity for customers, Wilsky said putting surplus items up for auction also helps the county's bottom line. She said last year the program brought in about $1.7 million in revenue. Learn more about the program and how you can score some good deals by checking out Florida's Fourth Estate. Full Hour | Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by telling what to expect on today's show, previewing that he'll be discussing Trump's alleged coming indictment and a new story just released by the Inquirer reporting that Philadelphia will have to pay $9.2M to protesters for using tear gas and rubber bullets during 2020 unrest. Dom offers his thoughts on the new bill, explaining why this is just another example of the hate levied toward police by a loud Left. Then, Dom returns to Donald Trump, taking calls from listeners who explain why they believe Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg is incredibly hypocritical. Then, Dom welcomes in Volusia County, Florida Sheriff Mike Chitwood, Jr. onto the Dom Giordano Program after the law enforcement official raided the home of a 4chan user involved in a hate group who have levied very serious threats against Chitwood and his family for his speaking out against their hate speech. Chitwood takes listeners inside the incident, explaining why he believed action needed to be taken, and tells where he thinks the plan goes from here. Then, Giordano brings things local, asking for Sheriff Chitwood's opinion on the state of Philadelphia, with Chitwood speaking in depth on the problems we see here in Philadelphia and what he thinks local officials need to do to improve the City. Tonight's guest, Jeremy Wilson, is a police officer and when he was 12, he went with his brother to stay with his grandparents, on their leather leaf fern farm, in Volusia County, Florida, near Pearson, Florida. It was spring break, of 1985. Like they'd normally do, Jeremy and his brother had gone out, after dinner, to spend more time outside before it was time for them to come in for the night. They were in the backyard area of the farm, standing on a dirt road back there, when all of a sudden, they heard a pack of hunting dogs coming their way. The dogs were being very vocal, and it was clear that they were on the trail of something. Not long after the boys heard the dogs, they heard the voices of a group of men that were following the dogs. It was around 8 PM, so dusk had already set in. When the boys had 1st heard the dogs, they were far off in the distance, but they kept getting louder and louder, as they approached, tracking whatever it was they were on the trail of. Before long, the boys saw a dark shape come into view, running through the ferns. To their surprise and shock, the dark figure ran onto the dirt road they were standing on and stopped. The boys had been expecting one of the animals that were known to inhabit the area to appear. None of the animals they were expecting to see run on their back legs, though. This creature WAS running on its back legs, when it appeared. None of the animals that were commonly found in the area, around the farm looked like a Werewolf. This creature did! After stopping on the dirt road, creature looked back, in the direction of the approaching hounds, and then guess where it focused its attention. Yep.
