This week I talked to Steven Watts about his new book, Citizen Cowboy: Will Rogers and the American People. Rogers was a fascinating figure, one who straddled America's status as a largely agrarian, frontier-expanding nation to the more urban, cosmopolitan nation we have today. He helped people manage the cultural change with his humor and became one of the most famous (and beloved) men in America by riding the new mass media wave and gently sticking it to politicians of all stripes. If you want to learn more about Rogers, make sure to check out Steven's book. And if you enjoyed this episode, share it with a friend!

Will Rogers was a youth from the Cherokee Indian Territory of Oklahoma who rose to conquer nearly every form of media and entertainment in the early twentieth century's rapidly expanding consumer society. Through vaudeville, the Ziegfeld Follies and Broadway, syndicated newspaper and magazine writing, the lecture circuit, radio, and Hollywood movies, Rogers built his reputation as a folksy humorist whose wit made him a national symbol of common sense, common decency, and common people. Though a friend of presidents, movie stars and industrial leaders, it was his bond with ordinary people that endeared him to mass audiences. Making his fellow Americans laugh and think while honoring the past and embracing the future, Rogers helped ease them into the modern world and they loved him for it. It was 1990  when Richard Bann first visited Hugh Hefner's Playboy Mansion.   Cinema and the importance of film preservation sparked a 30 year friendship. One that evolved into being closest of friends and an invitation to "Manly Night."Monday was always Manly Night, a gathering of Hef's closest friends who would nominate and vote on what film to screen after dinner: Dick Stewart, Ray Anthony, Mel Torme', Johnny Crawford, John Dante, Bob Ridgely, Chuck McCann, Peter Vieira, Ron Borst, Kevin Burns, Robert Culp, Fred Dryer, Jerry Vale, Richard Bann. In 1993 Dick Stewart and his wife Playmate, Anne Randall moved to Sun City. Dick went to Hef and suggested his seat at Hef's left hand should be given to Richard Bann, and Hef agreed. Brother Keith Hefner moved to Los Angeles from Aspen in 1997 coincident with Mel Torme's passing and his seat was given to Keith. "A seat at the table" was a big deal and not everyone who was close to Hef would receive that invitation by Hefner. Hefner was a creature of habit. Every week the calender would reflect nightly events. Events that were religiously  held at the Playboy Mansion in Holmby Hills, for a span of 45 years.Tuesday Nights = GAME nightWednesday Nights = GIN nightThursday Nights = FAMILY night when Hefners boys, Marston and Cooper were young.  Once the boys had grown up Thursday became a movie night.Friday Nights = CLASSIC FILM Night Saturday Nights = RERUN Movie ClassicsSunday Nights = screenings of yet to be released films. Straight from the studios, delivered UNDER lock AND key!!  The films would arrive on reels  and placed on Hefners equipment in in a hidden room behind the grand living room inside the library.Richard would write copious notes on each film before each movie night. Upon arriving at the Playboy Mansion, Richard would hand off his cliff notes to HEF.  Hefner, the consimate editor would take Richards notes and create his presentation. A cherished moment we ALL loved. Hef in his silk pajamas and robe, in his wonderfully warm and intoxicating way would present a tender and brilliant;  introspective and fascinating backstory on the film. It was "cinematic history" at it's pinnacle. We all shared the LOVE of movie nights held at the Playboy Mansion. The fondest memories we are so very lucky to share. THE BUNNY CHRONICLES - a History of Hugh Hefner & the Empire He Built - Playboy Magazine

"The hedonistic pursuit of uninhibited sex. Put these images together and a single name springs to mind--Hugh Hefner. From his spectacular launch of Playboy magazine and the dizzying expansion of his leisure empire to his recent television hit "The Girls Next Door,"  the publisher has attracted public attention and controversy for decades.Mr. Playboy tells the compelling and uniquely American story of how one person with a provocative idea, a finger on the pulse of popular opinion, and a passion for his work altered the course of modern history. Spans from Hefner's childhood to the launch of Playboy magazine and the expansion of the Playboy empire to the present. Puts Hefner's life and work into the cultural context of American life from the mid-twentieth-century onwards." He reveals that Hefner, from the beginning, believed he could overturn social norms and take America with him. This fascinating portrait illustrates four ways in which Hefner and Playboy stood at the center of several cultural upheavals that remade the postwar USA. "The publisher played a crucial role in the sexual revolution that upended traditional notions of behavior and expectation regarding sex. He emerged as one of the most influential advocates of a rapidly developing consumer culture, flooding Playboy readers with images of material abundance and a leisurely lifestyle. He proved instrumental--with his influential magazine, syndicated television shows, fashionable nightclubs, swanky resorts, and movie and musical projects--in making popular culture into a dominant force in many people's lives. Ironically, Hefner also became a controversial force in the movement for women's rights.Watts offers singular insights into the real man behind the flamboyant public persona. He shows Hefner's personal dichotomies--the pleasure seeker and the workaholic, the consort of countless Playmates and the genuine romantic, the family man and the Gatsby-like host of lavish parties at his Chicago and Los Angeles mansions."- PURCHASE THE BOOK HERE- Support the show SUPPORT THE SHOW CLICK HERE! Such small gestures can make a difference. I recently read a biography of Dale Carnegie by Steven Watts, entitled “Self-Help Messiah: Dale Carnegie and Success in Modern America”, penned by Ian Frazier. Carnegie is of course well known for his seminal work “How to Win Friends and Influence People” first published in 1936. I was somewhat surprised to learn that the text was largely drawn up as transcripts to lectures Carnegie was giving in New York City in the mid-1903s. Carnegie’s main thesis was to provide concrete steps on how ordinary people could help master the art of persuasion. While it has been some time since I read this book, what I recall is that to influence people, one has to listen to them. For me, the book was about how to become a better listener.  I cannot say enough about this skill for a CCO. If you hear any long-term CCO speak about their job, they will tell you it is largely about listening to people; whether those people are employees, senior management or the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Board members. By listening to others you not only hear, and hopefully will come to understand their concerns, but you allow them to come to decisions themselves and you are not in the position of telling them what to do. It is a skill that has served many CCOs very well for many years. Three key takeaways: A little can mean a lot. One of the primary keys to influencing people is to listen to them. A CCO can enhance their communications by using the six principals of persuasion.

This week I interview Disney Biographer Dr. Steven Watts - one of the historians featured in the recent PBS Documentary Walt Disney: American Experience. I ask him what the documentary got right and wrong, whether he was racist against different groups of people, One thing Walt Disney did that made him so successful. Visit www.TheDisneyMovieReview.com/45 for the show notes this week. In this episode, we ask Dr. Watts: What did he think of the documentary? What was it like to do research in the Disney archives?  How did Walt see what others could not see? What are the human parts of Walt Disney that we often do not see? Was Disney racist between certain groups?  In the documentary Dr. Watts said Disney didn't think through the problems of the Depression. What did he mean by that? Would Walt Disney have been able to be Walt Disney without Roy as his brother? What about Elias? How do we wrap around such a controversial figure?  Walt was very intent on the studio being named after him. Did that cause conflict? Playboy is having (another) moment. Since its fiftieth birthday in 2003, the brand's relevance has risen after a period of decline. The Girls Next Door, a reality television show about the goings-on at Hugh Hefner's Los Angeles mansion, was a breakout hit starting in 2005, and it eventually spawned two spin-offs and a lot of merchandise. Though The Girls Next Door and the second coming of Playboy clubs suggest that the brand has a place in the twenty-first century, reflections on its place in the twentieth are even more numerous. Hefner's impact has been reconsidered in several documentaries, the most recent of which is Brigitte Berman's acclaimed Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist, and Rebel (2009). More recently, NBC picked up The Playboy Club for Fall 2011, which is set in the Chicago club in the 1960s. Ads for the show proclaim the brand's importance: “A provocative drama about a time and place in which a visionary created an empire, and an icon changed American culture.” Scholars too are reconsidering Hefner and Playboy‘s contribution to American literature, art, politics, and, of course, sexuality, in the twentieth century. On the heels of Elizabeth Fratterigo's Playboy and the Making of the Good Life in Modern America and Steven Watts's Mr. Playboy: Hugh Hefner and the American Dream, historian Carrie Pitzulo's new Bachelors and Bunnies: The Sexual Politics of Playboy (University of Chicago Press, 2011) explores the pages of the magazine from its inception in 1953 to the end of its heyday in the 1970s. Pitzulo offers fresh and provocative readings of the notorious Playmates, but also discusses aspects of the magazine that have garnered less attention, including the popular Playboy Advisor column of the 1960s-70s. Bachelors and Bunnies is an exciting new feminist entry into the ever-broadening scholarship on Playboy. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Girls Next Door, a reality television show about the goings-on at Hugh Hefner’s Los Angeles mansion, was a breakout hit starting in 2005, and it eventually spawned two spin-offs and a lot of merchandise. Though The Girls Next Door and the second coming of Playboy clubs suggest that the brand has a place in the twenty-first century, reflections on its place in the twentieth are even more numerous. Hefner’s impact has been reconsidered in several documentaries, the most recent of which is Brigitte Berman’s acclaimed Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist, and Rebel (2009). More recently, NBC picked up The Playboy Club for Fall 2011, which is set in the Chicago club in the 1960s. Ads for the show proclaim the brand’s importance: “A provocative drama about a time and place in which a visionary created an empire, and an icon changed American culture.” Scholars too are reconsidering Hefner and Playboy‘s contribution to American literature, art, politics, and, of course, sexuality, in the twentieth century. On the heels of Elizabeth Fratterigo’s Playboy and the Making of the Good Life in Modern America and Steven Watts’s Mr. Playboy: Hugh Hefner and the American Dream, historian Carrie Pitzulo’s new Bachelors and Bunnies: The Sexual Politics of Playboy (University of Chicago Press, 2011) explores the pages of the magazine from its inception in 1953 to the end of its heyday in the 1970s.
