Christy Altomare and I first met when I had the honor of directing her in her college production of Little Women. Immediately after graduating from Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, she led the 1st National company of Spring Awakening, starring as Wendla, and her star has only continued to rise ever since. She originated the role of Anya in the Broadway production of Anastasia for which she received the Theatre World Award and was nominated for an Outer Critics Award and a Drama Desk Award for lead actress in a musical. She made her Broadway debut as Sophie Sheridan in Mamma Mia! Off-Broadway, Christy portrayed the role of Sue Snell in MCC's revival of Carrie the Musical. Christy can be heard on cast recordings of both Anastasia and Carrie. Regional credits include Jerusha Abbott in John Caird and Paul Gordon's production of Daddy Long Legs, Guinevere in Camelot, and most recently in two musicals with their sights set for Broadway, as Sue in The Wanderer the Musical at Papermill Playhouse and Scarlett in Noir the Musical at the Alley Theater. Along with her passion for musical theater, she is a songwriter/recording artist who recently released her new album of original music, Wandering Bird. Tune in as we chat about her life and career, as well as her most recent role, that of mom to son Preston! Christy is truly one of the most remarkable humans I've ever known and every bit of that empathy, intelligence and fierce artistry is on display in our catch up session - so sit back and enjoy!
Grab your scorebook and prepare for a wild ride as Troy and Roger dive into one of cinema's most unexpected sequels: Katt Shae's totally '90s gem, The Rage: Carrie 2. Join the guys as they navigate the intricacies of a mother-daughter relationship that's about as developed as a high school group project, tackle the ultra-realistic world of high school slut-shaming, and raise an eyebrow at the disturbingly chill security at Antrum Mental Institution—seriously, do they even have a security guard?! Oh, and let's not forget the shoehorned-in Sue Snell—because every sequel needs a cameo from the past, right? We're ordering two businesswomen's lunch specials this week and discussing the 1997 cult classic “Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion”! Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are iconically indelible (especially the Romy voice), but we also get cigarette acting from Jeneane Garafalo, Elaine Hendrix as a power lesbian Sue Snell, Julia Campbell's cruel Christie (the way she eats that burger though!), and Camryn Mannheim in those braces. Admittedly a lot of tangents this week on reunions, the Slaton sisters, white sneakers and Julianne Moore in old people makeup in “The Hours”. The Rage: Carrie 2 was not a box office success, but it wasn't the disaster a lot of people remember either. Finishing at #91 for the year, just ahead of Go and (somehow) just behind the Melissa Joan Hart/Adrian Grenier vehicle Drive Me Crazy, The Rage: Carrie 2 opened in late March at an impressive #2 behind the 1999 comedy hit Analyze This. But it didn't quite make back its budget, and it as since largely been forgotten about. Which is a shame, because it has a lot to offer. While the film was initially called The Curse and had nothing to do with 1976's Carrie, the similarities led the studio to call for a retooling that set the production back a couple years. And actor Amy Irving, who played Sue Snell in the original, was called in to reprise the role. A last-minute change of director (Poison Ivy director Katt Shea) further impacted the production. But both the fact that The Rage: Carrie 2 finally hit cinemas just a few weeks before Columbine, and its use of a real-life true crime story (the notorious Spur Posse) has led to a lot of revision of its legacy in the quarter century since. As such, we invited horror fan and true crime guy Paul Haynes (collaborator on Michell McNamara's 2018 book I'll Be Gone In The Dark) to talk it out with us.
Carrie Discussion Kyle Gould sat down with Kristine Astop, Director and wearer of many hats to discuss the process of bringing Carrie to stage with all of it's technical production difficulties, presented by Front Row Centre Players. Tickets available at https://www.artscommons.ca/whats-on/carrie-the-musical Carrie: Based on the novel by Stephen King, this contemporary, revamped version of the 1988 musical of the same name follows Carrie White, a young woman who discovers she has telekinetic powers. Carrie is relentlessly bullied at school and terrorized by her overprotective mother at home. Things begin to look up for Carrie when classmate Sue Snell convinces her boyfriend, Tommy Ross to take Carrie to prom as a way to make amends for the cruelty she has endured; however, the school bully, Chris has other ideas and everything culminates in a disastrous and deadly night at prom.
Welcome to the final week of Mother's May(hem) on Slashers Podcast! A month long event where we discuss horror films that highlight the joys and terrors of motherhood. Today Ade, Austin and Lance discuss 1999's The Rage: Carrie 2! Also, today's episode is so special because for the first time ever in Slashers Podcast history, all 3 hosts LIVE IN FLORIDA. Your degenerates await you! This film was initially intended to be a standalone, but was reworked to be a sequel to everyone's favorite telekinetic, teen angsty, Stephen King character 1974's Carrie. Written by Rafael Moreu and directed by Katt Shea, it stars Emily Bergl as Rachel Lang, a young goth chick who witnesses her best friend in a horrific accident (trigger warning) and must navigate the hell that is high school, all while her own mother is locked away in an institution for schizophrenia. Anyway, much like its predecessor, our protagonist does discover she has some special abilities, but unlike Carrie, Rachel seems to keep them on the back burner until our final act. The film also stars other 90s favorites such as Jason London (Dazed and Confused), Rachel Blanchard (Clueless), Dylan Bruno (Saving Private Ryan), Zachery Ty Bryan (Home Improvement), Mena Suvari (American Pie), Eddie Kaye Thomas (American Pie), J. Smith Cameron, and Amy Irving reprising her role as Sue Snell from Brian de Palma's Carrie. While this movie was initially a flop, it has since developed a cult following. And while it may not hold a candle to his first installment, it's still pretty damn good. What do you think? Let us know your thoughts!! Amy was brought up in the world of theater. She was put on stage from the time she was nine-months-old, her father was the director and her mother was the actress, they didn't want baby sitters for their children, so if she wasn't performing, she would stay in the wardrobe department or her mother used to put her in the second row center where she could watch her. And, before she was 10-years-old, she had already worked in several plays. At a young age, Amy Irving was trained at the American Conservatory Theater and Britain's London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (L.A.M.A.D.A.). She made her off-Broadway debut at the age of 17 and, from that moment to date, she received critical acclaim, appearing in such plays as: "Heartbreak House" (1983), "The Road to Mecca" (1988), "Broken Glass" (1994), "The Three Sisters" (1997), "The Guys" (2002), "Ghosts" (2002) and "Celadine" (2004), among others. In 1976, Amy made her film debut, playing "Sue Snell", one of her most unforgettable characters in Stephen King's Carrie (1976), a classic in the horror genre, taken to the big screen by director Brian De Palma. For the next few years, Irving continued working in important films, The Fury (1978), also directed by De Palma, Voices (1979) and The Competition (1980). Later, in 1983, she gave a fine performance as "Hadass", in Barbra Streisand's Yentl (1983), and won an Oscar nomination for her great work in that successful film. Two of her best opportunities arrived in the late 80s, when she played "Anna Anderson" in Anastasia: The Mystery of Anna (1986) and "Isabelle Grossman" in the romantic comedy, Crossing Delancey (1988); she received a Golden Globe nomination for each movie. She went on to starring roles in Voices, Honeysuckle Rose, The Competition and Micki and Maude. In 2023 Amy released her album -BORN IN A TRUNK- featuring ten cover songs pulled from her life and career. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

LOOKOUT! Christy Altomare steps into The Batter’s Box for Episode 76! One of Broadway's most beloved players, Altomare’s talent as a leading lady is up there with anyone's in the game. She got her start in show business when she starred as Wendla in the first national tour of Spring Awakening in 2008, before taking on the role of Sue Snell in the off-Broadway revival of Carrie in 2012. Later that year, she’d go on to make her Broadway debut in Mamma Mia! when she starred as Sophie Sheridan, and most recently, she originated the role of Anya in Anastasia. In doing so, she not only earned a Drama Desk Nomination and Theatre World Award, but she also won the very prestigious Broadway.com Star of the Year title in 2017. We often parallel that honor to being MLB's top Vote-Getter at the All-Star Game… In a conversation that covers all bases, Altomare speaks with host Al Malafronte about anything from her latest songwriting endeavors to her biggest grand slams on Broadway. She also discusses achieving great heights as a performer, and in her case, overcoming a tough period of darkness in order to do so. Altomare explains what inspired her to make changes in her life off-stage in order to propel success on it, which is a story that can motivate anyone who’s looking to excel either on stage or at the stadium. This chat also features big laughs during this week’s 7th Inning Stretch trivia, along with some epic banter about Billy Joel vs. Bruce Springsteen concerts, Italian name translations, and even New York Yankees references in Friends. She made her Broadway debut as Sophie in Mamma Mia!, and also starred as Wendla in the national tour of Spring Awakening. Most recently, Christy originated the titular role in the Broadway premiere of Anastasia!
This 1999 film is the sequel to Carrie and even has Sue Snell as a bridge character between the two films, but definitely pales in comparison to Brian De Palma's dynamite 1976 film. Rachel is misunderstood at home and at school, and when a serious of catastrophic events happen to her, her raw unleashed power comes to the surface at last! (Sounds familiar?)
