1649 was a significant year in British History because King Charles I was executed for treason. A lesser known, but arguably equally important, historical moment occurred in that same year: the first publication of the Qu'ran in English. Surprisingly, it was instigated by an English woman, called Margaret White, who was the wife of a printer called Robert based in Fleet Street, London.Based on historical research, this drama imagines the circumstances as to how the Qu'ran came to be first published in the English language.Cast: Margaret ......... Send Kris and Rob a Text Message.Billy Chemirmir and the Pillowcase MurdersIn the realm of true crime, there are stories that shock, stories that haunt, and then there are stories like that of Billy Chemirmir, the face behind the chilling moniker "The Pillowcase Murderer." Between the years 2016 and 2018, the Dallas-Fort Worth area was gripped by a wave of perplexing deaths in luxury senior living facilities. Little did anyone know, a sinister figure lurked among them, preying on the vulnerable with a heart as cold as ice.In the guise of a maintenance worker or a health aide, Chemirmir gained unfettered access to the homes and rooms of unsuspecting elderly residents. What followed was a spree of unimaginable horror, as he smothered at least 22 women with pillows, leaving behind a trail of stolen jewelry and valuables. The most disturbing aspect? For the longest time, no one suspected foul play. The victims, predominantly in their eighties or beyond, seemed to succumb to natural causes, their deaths attributed to old age or age-related ailments. It was a perfect façade, a veil of normalcy shrouding the darkness within. But as the body count rose, so did the suspicion, until one fateful encounter shattered the illusion.A survivor emerged from the clutches of death, her harrowing ordeal unveiling the truth behind the facade of tranquility. Suddenly, the deaths of 22 women and men were no longer mere coincidences but deliberate, calculated acts of violence. The reign of terror orchestrated by Chemirmir sent shockwaves through the community, leaving families shattered and authorities scrambling for answers.Yet, amidst the chaos and devastation, questions lingered. How many more victims lay undiscovered in the wake of his heinous crimes? Could the number of lives he claimed extend beyond what we dare to imagine? The chilling reality is that the true extent of his atrocities may never be fully known.sources used for this podcastSupport the Show.JOIN THE HITCHED 2 HOMICIDE IN-LAWS AND OUTLAWSSTART KRIS CALVERT'S BOOKS TODAY FOR FREEH2H WEBSITEH2H on TWITTERH2H on INSTA

Welcome back to Part 2 of our "Carrie the Musical" 35th anniversary podcast episode with Erik Champney! Erik explains how his "Carrie: The Master Cut" film helped Linzi Hateley and others in the cast and the creative team escape 35 years of being haunted by this musical! Right away he counters any notion you have that the 1988 musical was a Broadway Flop! As Erik says, "Why are we still talking about and obsessed with a musical that is a Flop"? Erik and Andrew dig into the complex relationship between Carrie and Margaret White and their abused/abuser relationship...But Erik says there's a point where "the abused becomes the abuser." What made Linzi and Betty's chemistry so dynamic and powerful? In the song "And Eve Was Weak," Margaret belts out (so expertly done by Betty) the lyric "Oh Lord I've seen this powerful before"! Why has she seen Carrie's telekinetic power before? Erik has a lot of thoughts and let's just say that ancient Greek mythology plays a big role in his analysis! Get ready to understand how much ancient Greek myth and culture is present in Stephen King's narrative and especially in Terry Hands' direction (remember he was part of the Royal Shakespeare Company so knew his ancient Greek drama really well). Have your notebook handy so you can take down notes about mythology and how it impacts your analysis of Carrie, Margaret, Chris, Sue, Billy, Tommy, and Miss Gardner. But wait what about the Prom of it all! You're cordially invited to our Bonus Episode "Let's Talk About the Prom," an extra 35 minutes of content! WW2 Bombing Raids on Germany Were Bloodbaths for the Allies Until a Futurist Fighter Plane (the P-51) Was Developed

One of the lowest points of World War 2 for the Allies was autumn 1943, when bombing runs from England to Germany were ramping up. Hundreds of B-17s flew out to strike military targets, but they flew unescorted due to being the only planes with enough range (fighters could only make it from England to Belgium and back) and were sitting ducks for German fighters. Losses were as high as 25 percent. Flight crews were grounded and murmured mutiny. But what change everything was the revolutionary P-51 Mustang fighter. It had a top speed of over 400 mph and fly over 2,000 miles – outrunning and outlasting any other fighter in the war. But not many know the story of how it gained its reputation—how it nearly didn't make it to the skies at all. Today's guests are David and Margaret White, author of “Wings of War: The World War II Fighter Plane that Saved the Allies and the Believers Who Made It Fly.”We discuss how the P-51 Mustang airplane was not only used in the war, but how it was created, the roadblocks that almost prevented it from taking flight against the Luftwaffe, and how it ultimately won the war.

On February 13th, 1988, "Carrie the Musical" premiered at the Royal Shakespeare Company, in Stratford, and on April 28th, it would begin previews at the Virginia Theater on Broadway (now the August Wilson). To celebrate 35 years of this enigma powerhouse of a musical, Andrew welcomes Erik Champney, a NYC playwright, screenwriter, and director, who created "Carrie: The Master Cut" which is the first professional cinematic reconstruction of the 1988 musical! Right away Erik explains his origin story for discovering the Broadway musical, and like Andrew, it all started with their first encounter with Stephen King's powerful novel! Erik explains why Terry Hands, the director of "Carrie," was so drawn to this narrative and what ancient Greek tragedies and opera have to do with Terry Hands' interpretation! Andrew has always been fascinated with the complex and powerful Debbie Allen choreography so they get into how this aspect of the show connects to Carrie's home life with her mother, Margaret. Why are the high school musical numbers so drastically different than Carrie and Margaret's numbers, or are they connected somehow? Andrew taught the 1988 Broadway production to his Broadway Musical students at Stony Brook University and with Erik, the two analyze and dissect Act One of the musical. They begin with the audience walking in and being surrounded by black walls and then being plunged into darkness with the 80s rock overture! How does Erik interpret the high school students and why is ancient Greek culture and society so important for this analysis? They get into the nuanced dynamics between Tommy and Sue compared to Billy and Chris! Erik leaves us in suspense when he explains how his "Carrie: The Master Cut" helped Linzi and others escape 35 years of being haunted by this musical. And, what about Carrie and Margaret White? The P-51 Mustang changed the course of the air war in Europe, but it almost didn't make it off the assembly line.  The story of the Mustang's evolution and the pilots that flew it in combat is the subject of a great new book by David & Margaret White titled “ Wings of War; The World War II Fighter Plane That Saved the Allies and the Believers Who Made It Fly.” The genesis of the book is Margaret's 103 year old father who served as a ground officer with the 20th Fighter Group in England and often regaled her with stories. David was already a published author so the two teamed up to write “Wings of War”. The Mustang was originally developed for use by the British Royal Air Force but did not inspire interest among US Military leaders.  The story of the P-51 might have ended there were it not for Tommy Hitchock, a former WWI pilot who fought the bureaucracy as ferociously as the Mustang fought the Germans.  His advocacy for the aircraft was critical. Margaret shares that a certain level of bias against using a British manufactured engine in the Mustang was an issue. Outright corruption by Major General Bennett Myers also played a role in holding the Mustang back. Myers was eventually courts martialed. When the nimble P-51 was introduced, it was able to outfly anything the Luftwaffe could put in the air. Most importantly, it had the fuel capacity to escort the bombers all the way to the heart of Germany and back. We also discuss some of the very interesting pilots who flew the Mustang including Don Blakeslee. Blakeslee was such a fan of the Mustang that he told his commander he could have his pilots trained in 24 hours. Many of the pilots learned to fly the P-51 on their way to the target. TAKEAWAY:  Pilot Joe Peterburs said “I'm nineteen years old. They gave me a plane with 2,000 horsepower and six 50 caliber machine guns and they said go have fun. I had fun!”

In this episode of the Don't Know Her? podcast we are back to chat about another performer we feel deserving of a lot more recognition than they have received so far. This time we are delighted to be joined by a guest from all the way Down Under, it's James Kunovski - host of the Out of Oscar podcast - who has brought the delightful Patricia Clarkson to round off our miniseries focussing in on one-time Oscar Nominees Patricia will be a familiar face to many for her eclectic work in American indie cinema and for her award-winning supporting turns in TV shows like Sharp Objects and Six Feet Under. In this episode we focus on a few of her many film performances, including The Station Agent, Far From Heaven, Easy A, and her Oscar-nominated turn in Pieces of April. We even dip into her less celebrated work in the 2002 TV adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie, where she plays iconic literary/screen mother, Margaret White. In the quiz this time Michael pits James against Scott to establish who is the bigger fan of Ms. Clarkson. Following on from this we all make our suggestions for what we'd love to see from Patricia down the line. Will any of these choices get picked up for development - we certainly hope so. We hope you enjoy this episode and that if you haven't already you'll join us on social media. Pardon the audio this episode, we had some telekinetic difficulties but it's not like we burned down the prom or anything. This week we're queening out on Oscar nominee Piper Laurie as one of horror's most monstrous mothers, Margaret White in 1976's "Carrie." (The question is even posed as to whether she should have won the Academy Award over Beatrice Straight in "Network" that year!) We also have much to say about Broadway legend Betty Buckley in her film debut as Miss Collins, a sympathetic gym teacher fond of a face journey and a cigarette in the principal's office. Plus: Sue Snell and Tommy Ross as "good kids," Nancy Allen as the iconically evil Chris, John Travolta as her flunky hunk, Ellen Travolta as a brief tangent that has nothing to do with "Carrie," and praise for Pino, Priscilla Pointer and that perfectly bonkers ending. This film is based on the first novel written by acclaimed horror writer, Stephen King (IT, The Shining, 'Salem's Lot, Pet Sematary). Brian De Palma (Dressed to Kill, The Untouchables, Phantom of the Paradise) was in the director’s chair for this production, leading a tremendous cast and meeting his future wife. The film stars Academy Award Winner, Sissy Spacek, as the titular Carrie. Her mother, Margaret White, is played by Academy Award Nominee, Piper Laurie. A young John Travolta (Saturday Night Fever, Face Off, Phenomenon) plays the cruel Billy Nolan, while his scheming girlfriend, Chris Hargensen, is played by Nancy Allen (Robocop 1-3). P.J. Soles (Stripes, The Devil’s Rejects, Halloween) plays one of Chris’ lackeys with possible the worse bangs ever to grace the silver screen. While undoubtedly less polarizing than The Shining, it does differ from the book, which we address. The essence remains the same across platforms (even the terrible musical): a bullied girl gets revenge using telekinesis. It's a hat trick, ladies and gentlemen! Our third official episode is live! This week, we discuss the Robert Rodriguez cult classic, The Faculty. Rodriguez was right off his smash hits El Mariachi, Desperado, and From Dusk Till Dawn. This was also in that sweet spot before he launched the much maligned Spy Kids trilogy. We review the parallels to The Breakfast Club, address each and every sci fi homage in the movie (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Puppet Master, Men in Black, The Thing, Alien, etc.), and we rank the film in comparison to our prior episodes. Casey Connor is played by a pre-Lord of the Rings, post-The Good Son, Elijah Wood. Wood has some serious horror credentials, having starred in Cooties, Maniac, and Come to Daddy. Perhaps the most horror-credentialed actor in the film, Clea DuVall, plays Stokes. She went on to be in Ghosts of Mars, The Grudge, Zodiac, Identity, American Horror Story, Lizzie Borden Took an Axe, and The Astronaut's Wife. Josh Hartnett was all the rage in the late 90's and early 2000s. He starred in 30 Days of Night, The Black Dahlia, and Halloween: H20. Jordana Brewster plays Delilah Profitt. We can't tell if that is a pun with prophet, as she is an aspiring reporter, or profit because she will stop at nothing for the story. Brewster later starred in the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre., before selling her soul to the Fast & Furious franchise Piper Laurie, who played Margaret White in Carrie, has some tremendous moments in the film. Robert Patrick, of T2: Judgment Day fame, puts his steely gaze (pun intended) to good use as the coach of the football team, which in this small town where the pigskin is God, makes him a Patron Saint. Famke Janssen (X-Men, Goldeneye, Lord of Illusions) plays the piteous Miss Burke, who becomes a bold and empowered woman, albeit with a severed-head crawling across the pavement. While appearing the new comedy "White's Lies", Betty Buckley talks about the career that has taken her from Texas to New York to London and back many times over. She discusses why she chose to play her current supporting role in an Off-Broadway comedy by a first-time writer for her first stage role in New York in seven years; how being discovered while still a Texas teen led to her Broadway debut, fresh off the bus, as Martha Jefferson in "1776" -- and what it was like to be one of only two women in a cast of 30 men; how she quickly followed that debut with her West End debut in the leading role of "Promises, Promises"; the professional challenges she faced in even getting seen for a role in "Pippin", where she ultimately replaced Jill Clayburgh; her bi-coastal stints in "I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking It On The Road"; how she convinced Trevor Nunn that she should play Grizabella in "Cats" and when she realized that the role wasn't really very big; what it was like to appear in the solo musical "Tell Me On a Sunday" as part of "Song and Dance"; the circumstances surrounding her succeeding Barbara Cook in the role of Margaret White in the now-legendary musical "Carrie" -- and why she believe the show should have gone the "Rocky Horror" route; why she considers Norma Desmond in "Sunset Boulevard" to have been her most fulfilling acting challenge; her affinity for the role of Mama Rose in "Gypsy" and the main reason that her performance was never seen in New York; and why she has taken so enthusiastically to Twitter. Original air date - May 5, 2010.
