Minnesota Now is celebrating its third anniversary in a big way — with a quiz show in front of a live studio audience, hosted by Cathy Wurzer and Tane Danger. Two teams face off head-to-head to answer questions about Minnesota news from the past year, Minnesota music and more. Hip hop artist Nur-D leads one team, joined by Minnesota Now newscaster Emily Reese and former MPR politics editor Mike Mulcahy. Chef Yia Vang serves as the team captain with MPR meteorologist Sven Sundgaard and incoming Minnesota Now host Nina Moini. Watch the quiz show on the MPR News YouTube page.
The Minnesota Humanities Center is partnering with a local improv production company to host a civic-improv comedy tour. In each city or town, Danger Boat Productions will produce a unique event that brings residents together for meaningful conversation about their hometown and reflects their thoughts and feelings back at them through improv comedy. The goal is to promote dialogue, bridge divides and work across differences.Applications are open through Friday for Minnesota communities to apply. Improv comedy may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of public policy, but Tane Danger suggests maybe it should be. Danger is the keynote speaker at this year's professional development seminar for two legislative staff groups—the Research Editorial, Legal and Committee Staff (RELACS) and the Legislative Research Librarians (LRL). The meeting is Sept. 19-22 in Minneapolis and at the state Capitol in St. Paul.Danger co-founded the Theater of Public Policy in Minnesota, which combines serious public policy discussion with improv comedy. On the podcast, he discussed how the skills you need for improv, such as careful listening, are also skills that can help in a legislative environment. He also laid out how his two-day presentation to the legislative staff groups will involve both a talk and a workshop. Amanda LaGrange is the chief executive officer of Tech Dump, “providing seamless electronics recycling services for businesses and organizations of all sizes (and) a social enterprise that provides jobs and training for persons facing barriers to employment.” Tech Dump has operated largely on earned revenue, but has been broken into it’s first “event” fundraising opportunity with the “Thanks for Not Coming” gala. The zero-waste event asked supporters to buy a ticket to not show up in person. The event was emceed by Tane Danger of the Theater of Public Policy in space donated by the Midpointe Event Center, but guests were asked to stay home and enjoy the short program remotely. Improvisational humor is an awesome tool used by The Theater of Public Policy (t2p2.net) to find new ways forward in public discourse. Co-founded by Tane Danger & Brandon Boat in 2011, they've tackled a surprisingly wide variety of issues with their creative and disarming approach, including farm policy, robotics, clean water, and religion.
