Kelly, and Keith Raniere, yet refused to apply the same framework to Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell—a pair whose conduct fits the statute more cleanly than almost any modern defendant. RICO is designed to dismantle criminal enterprises that rely on networks, enablers, financial infrastructure, and ongoing patterns of illegal activity. Epstein's operation was exactly that: a long-running trafficking enterprise spanning multiple states and countries, involving recruiters, schedulers, pilots, accountants, lawyers, shell companies, and complicit financial institutions. Ghislaine Maxwell was not merely an associate; she was a central manager who procured victims, enforced compliance, and maintained the machinery that allowed the abuse to continue for decades. By any objective comparison, Epstein's organization was more structured, more durable, and more dependent on coordinated criminal activity than the enterprises alleged in the Diddy, R. Kelly, or NXIVM cases.The only explanation that accounts for this disparity is not legal logic, but institutional avoidance. In this episode of Practical Stoicism, I unpack Meditations 4.4, where Marcus Aurelius reflects on the shared nature of human reason and its connection to a universal law. While Marcus builds a case for a kind of Stoic cosmopolitanism—where all rational beings are part of one commonwealth—I explore how this can inform our understanding of decentralized morality and Natural Law. I also contrast Stoic justice with religious or centralized legal frameworks, and explain why Stoicism's moral reasoning demands more personal responsibility and attentiveness to context. Later in the episode, I answer a listener question about standing for justice in a polarized world. I argue that recognizing our limitations is a crucial part of ethical living. We can't do everything, and pretending otherwise often causes more harm than good.
