One month before Rob and Michele Reiner were killed, Nick's schizoaffective medication was changed. He complained about weight gain. The medication was adjusted. Sources say it still isn't working properly in jail.Defense attorney Bob Motta believes that medication change could become the centerpiece of Nick Reiner's defense — and it raises questions about who else might face liability.Nick reportedly admits to killing his parents. He's telling people he did it. But according to TMZ sources, he doesn't understand why he's in jail. He believes his incarceration is part of a conspiracy against him. Here's the thing: there was a conspiracy. For 32 years, every system Nick touched conspired to protect him from consequences. More than 18 treatment facilities cashed checks and released him after 30 days. His family spent a fortune. A family associate told the New York Times that the Reiners had "grown used to" his behavior. His father getting into a loud argument with him at Conan O'Brien's Christmas party didn't even register as unusual anymore. Now the conspiracy has flipped.Bob Motta breaks down California's insanity standard — which doesn't require proving Nick didn't know right from wrong, only that he didn't understand the "nature and quality" of his actions. He examines the David Carmichael precedent, where a father who methodically planned his son's killing was found not criminally responsible due to psychotic delusion. With Alan Jackson out, Nick is represented by a public defender. Prosecutor Habib Balian — Menendez brothers, Robert Durst — is on the case. Nick's siblings reportedly oppose the death penalty. The murder weapon hasn't been found. This case may not see trial for years. The question is whether the system finally works — or whether Nick finds a way to beat it one more time.#NickReiner #RobReiner #MicheleReiner #BobMotta #InsanityDefense #MedicationChange #HiddenKillers #Schizoaffective #TrueCrime #ReinerCaseJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? On episode 308 of the AwardsWatch podcast, Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade and Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello look at the competitive International Feature Film contenders and provide a preview of some of the major titles coming to the 63rd New York Film Festival. With more than 70 countries having submitted films for the International Feature Film Oscar so far, now was a good time to look at the frontrunners like Sentimental Value, It Was Just an Accident and The Secret Agent, the NEON dominance of them and how many can really make the final five. We also look outside of those Cannes winners for titles that could pique the voters' interest as uniquely named films have done in the past. Next up is the preview of the 63rd New York Film Festival, which begins this Friday with the opening film, Luca Guadagnino's After the Hunt. After taking a critical drubbing at its Venice bow, we examine if it can rebound here in the states. Two world premieres will be a part of the festival including Anemone, the feature debut from Ronan Day-Lewis starring his three-time Oscar-winning father Daniel Day-Lewis, back on screen for the first time since 2017's Phantom Thread. At the time of recording both Sophia and I had just seen the film but were under embargo (until September 28). The Venice Golden Lion winner Father Mother Sister Brother from Jim Jarmusch is the Centerpiece film and then Bradley Cooper's third directorial effort, the stand-up comedian story Is This Thing On? will close the festival. Could this be Cooper's attempt to rein it in and silence some of the critics of Maestro? This podcast runs 1h07m. We will be back next week with xxxxx Till then, let's get into it. How are some of the lobby props in the Hollywood Tower Hotel connected to an iconic Walt Disney show from the 1950s?In this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we check into the lobby of the Hollywood Tower Hotel to uncover what secrets have been decaying before us right in plain sight in the center of the room. After finding some stickers on the ceiling and discovering the origin of the chandeliers and sconces, we explain the presence of the creepy bronze owl (and the flowers below him), and even tell you where you can buy your own replica of the statue. We then wander over to the couple's table, where we make an amazing discovery about the chairs, and discuss wine servers and dining etiquette (and also find ANOTHER connection to Richard Nixon for Kate). We wrap up this episode digging into the history of Hollywood's favorite lipstick, learning some glove love language, and untangling the myth (and reality) of flapper dress fringe.

This week we're excited to present a conversation from the 62nd New York Film Festival with author Sigrid Nunez. With her novels The Friend (winner of the 2018 National Book Award for Fiction) and What Are You Going Through, New York–based author Sigrid Nunez has supplied the extraordinarily rich source material for not one, but two films in the NYFF62 lineup: Scott McGehee and David Siegel's Spotlight standout The Friend, starring Naomi Watts as a writer mourning the complicated loss of a beloved mentor; and Pedro Almodóvar's Centerpiece selection The Room Next Door, which follows another writer (Julianne Moore) as she reconnects with a friend from her past (Tilda Swinton) who approaches her with an unusual request. We were honored to welcome Nunez for a special conversation about her prismatic literary meditations on grief, friendship, and the passage of time; the experience of seeing her creative work adapted into other mediums; and cinema's alchemical capacity to both translate and transform a novel's meaning. This conversation was moderated by A.O. Scott, critic at large for The New York Times Book Review. A New York Times Critic's Pick, Pedro Almodovar's The Room Next Door is now playing at FLC.
