Tokyo used to be presented as the ultimate hyper-modern city. But after years of economic recession the Tokyo of today has another side. A site of alienation and loneliness, anxiety about conformity and identity, it is a place where self-professed 'geeks' (or 'otaku'), mostly single middle-aged men, congregate in districts like Akibahara to pursue fanatical interests outside mainstream society, including cult-like followings of teenage girl singers known as Tokyo Idols. Novelist Tomoyuki Hoshino, photographer Suzanne Mooney, writer/photographer Mariko Nagai and film-maker Kyoko Miyake look at life in the city for the Heisei generation. Presented by Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough. Director Kyoko Miyake has made a film called Tokyo Idols which looks at the obsession of middle aged men with superstar teenage girls who make a living online Suzanne Mooney's photographs depict the urban landscapes of Tokyo. Novelist Tomoyuki Hoshino's latest book to be translated into English is called ME. It's about rootless millennials and suicide. Mariko Nagai is an author and photographer who has written for children and adults. Her books include Instructions for the Living and Irradiated Cities. The translator was Bethan Jones and the speakers were all in the UK to take part in events as part of Japan Now - a festival at the British Library in London, and in Manchester, Sheffield, Norwich. Programmed by Modern Culture in partnership with the Japan Foundation and Sheffield University. Producer: Luke Mulhall
Capitalism, loneliness and purity is the name of the japanese idol game–especially as told through Tokyo Idols and Perfect Blue. Carlo and Jenna discuss these themes in depth as they attempt to navigate the darker aspects of a society they otherwise tend to admire.

On one of my previous shows where I talked about my favourite movies that are set in Japan I mentioned the documentary film called Tokyo Idols. It’s a fantastic look into the idol culture here in Japan and I highly recommend everyone to check it out. To find out more about the idol culture in Japan I’ve invited Alice on the show. She is the head of an upcoming idol group called Maidoremi and they perform at various events around Tokyo.
Bueno, bueno, bueno.

Are you paying your fair share to support your favorite idol? If not, you either don't live in Tokyo or you're a married man living in Tokyo. That probably sounds confusing, and yes, that's one word for it. On this episode, the team discusses the documentary "Tokyo Idol" which covers the strange Japanese trend where middle-aged men worship and financially support female pop singers known as "idols."
On this all-new episode of What’s New To Netflix Instant!? we get gruesome, uncomfortable, and just downright creepy when we look at three films that are new to Netflix! First up, we look at the list of new releases coming this month. Then, we examine the subject of Japanese ‘idols’ and the kind of fans that will do anything for them when we look at Tokyo Idols from 2017. Following this, things get out of hand when we get bloody with The Babysitter, a Netflix original also from 2017. Finally, we watch Quentin Tarantino’s latest film, The Hateful Eight from 2015. All of this plus we get the wrong Santa Claws on Netflix, old arcade games, lots of crime dramas, Netflix original anime, and the most shameless Finding Nemo/Dory rip-off we’ve ever encountered. got a suggestion for the show?: whatsnewtonetflixinstant@gmail.com

Kyoko and Face2Face host David Peck talk about her new film Tokyo Idols, Tokyo “idol culture”, loneliness, relationships, clever business models and how to find love in hyper modern societies. IMDB Trailer Find out more about the film here. And learn more about Kyoko here. Synopsis “IDOLS” has fast become a phenomenon in Japan as girl bands and pop music permeate Japanese life. TOKYO IDOLS - an eye-opening film gets at the heart of a cultural phenomenon driven by an obsession with young female sexuality and Internet popularity. This ever-growing phenomenon is told through Rio, a bona fide "Tokyo Idol" who takes us on her journey toward fame. Now meet her “brothers”: a group of adult middle aged male super fans (ages 35 - 50) who devote their lives to following her—in the virtual world and in real life. Once considered to be on the fringes of society, the "brothers" who gave up salaried jobs to pursue an interest in female idol culture have since blown up and have now become mainstream via the internet, illuminating the growing disconnect between men and women in hypermodern societies. With her provocative look into the Japanese pop music industry and its focus on traditional beauty ideals, filmmaker Kyoko Miyake confronts the nature of gender power dynamics at work. As the female idols become younger and younger, Miyake offers a critique on the veil of internet fame and the new terms of engagement that are now playing out IRL around the globe. Biography Born in Japan, Kyoko Miyake studied history at Tokyo University and then moved to Britain to research the history of witchcraft at Oxford. Her film Brakeless won a Peabody Award after airing on PBS and BBC. Her first film, My Atomic Aunt, was supported by the Sundance Institute Documentary Fund, BBC, WDR, and NHK, and it was recently broadcast on PBS. Hackney Lullabies won the Berlin Today Award at the 2011 Berlin International Film Festival. ---------- For more information about my podcasting, writing and public speaking please visit my site.
