See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Grouches visit the dark underbelly of the idyllic American societal experience in George Clooney's Suburbicon.
The story of Suburbicon. Suburbicon is a peaceful, idyllic, suburban community with affordable homes and manicured lawns -- the perfect place to raise a family, and in the summer of 1959, the Lodge family is doing just that. But the tranquil surface masks a disturbing reality, as husband and father Gardner Lodge must navigate the town's dark underbelly of betrayal, deceit, and violence. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/talktv/support

What happens when you take a script by Academy Award winning writers, put it in the hands of an Academy Award nominated director, and put Academy Award winning/nominated actors in your satire? In this instance, you get the s**t sandwich that is George Clooney's 2017 bellyflop: “Suburbicon”. Melissa and Adam really get into it all on this episode: the glory of Dollar Tree, Mel's new unattraction for George Clooney, and sexual ping pong paddles. We meet up with veteran location manager, scout and current Location Managers Guild International (LMGI) board member Ken Haber in the neighborhood from George Clooney's 1950s-set crime drama, "Suburbicon" (2017). Ken talks the challenges of finding a period-accurate, '50s housing development in contemporary L.A., becoming Ridley Scott's go-to location manager, and a familial connection going back to Brooklyn, NY. A few of the neighbors of Ash Avenue also join us to talk about the experience of having their street appear in a major motion picture.
On today’s episode, the boys move into our new house that looks just like every other house in the neighborhood, but for some reason all of our neighbors seem to be hanging outside on our lawn, singing songs to us. Good thing we made friends with our completely normal neighbors. This is Suburbicon! Can the Coen Brothers still make good movies? Did this movie do a good job handling racial issues? I had the pleasure of chatting with Don Baldaramos recently. He has done everything! We spoke about his work with Jose Ferrar on Masterpiece Theatre – he said he had his hands around Ferrar’s neck !!! Not a lot of people can say that. Don has worked on everything – from Suburbicon with Matt Damon to Sci Fi to voiceovers, and has just finished the movie “Monstrous.” Can’t wait for it to be released. Don’s training is amazing. He studied at San Jose State and the Royal Academy in London, concentrating on theatre. He does an amazing monologue from King Lear – it’s on youtube. Check it out His plans for the future – more voiceovers! I’m excited for this episode because international sales isn’t a realm of the industry we’ve covered massively on the podcast and to my mind it’s obviously a hugely important chunk of the film’s journey, but one that sort of gets maybe less attention, particularly once a film is out in cinemas, we more often than note associate the film with its distributor or producer but sales agents are the bridge between those two entities and who better to give us insight into that world than Gabrielle Stewart whose is Managing Director at London-based sales agent HanWay films. HanWay are an incredibly prestigious who have sold some astounding films in the past decade, some of my personal favourites include Brooklyn, Carol, High-Rise, Tale of Tales, 20,000 Days on Earth, The Guest, Tracks, Only Lovers Left Alive and Colette. Gabrielle joined HanWay Films in 2016 and their current slate includes Matteo Garrone’s Pinocchio, Viggo Mortensen’s debut Falling, Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter, and Made in Italy starring Liam Neeson. Gabrielle came from serving as SVP of International Sales and Distribution in Los Angeles for Bloom Media since its 2013 inception and they sold films such as The Nice Guys and Suburbicon. The company has since been acquired by Endeavor Content. She joined Bloom from Exclusive Media where she worked on films such as Rush and Jane Got a Gun. Prior to Exclusive Media, she spent eight years in London at Focus Features International where she served as Vice President of International Sales, selling films by international directors including Ang Lee, Pedro Almodovar, the Wachowskis, Fernando Meirelles, Gus Van Sant, Alejandro Iñárritu, the Coen Brothers and Joe Wright. So suffice to say, Gabrielle has a wealth of experience and insight and I feel very privileged to have gotten to talk to her for the podcast. We cover how the landscape of international sales has changed during Covid, the difference working in LA and working in London, how Gabrielle has learnt to manage a team and what it was like being the first ever woman that served as MD at HanWay. There are lots of good nuggets of advice within, so thank you to Gabrielle for sharing them and I hope you enjoy listening.

This time, we review the family survival drama film A Quiet Place and ask how did John Krasinski go from office prankster to survivalist farmer, is this a film with social commentary, and why have a baby during the apocalypse? Let's dive in… A Quiet Place (2018) Cast and Crew Written, directed and starring John Krasinski as Lee Abbott: Krasinski rose to prominence following his starring role as loveable goofball Jim Halpert on the US version of The Office where he gained a reputation as a comedic actor. Then he slowly began to turn around that perception by appearing in 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi and the Amazon Prime series Jack Ryan. A Quiet Place also helped him separate him from his Jim Halper role even further. His appearance in A Quiet Place not only cemented a new perception of Krasinski as an actor, but also as a director as this was only the third time he sat in the director's chair and his first time as a director for a major studio. He also shares screenwriting credits with fellow writers Bryan Woods and Scott Beck. Emily Blunt as Evelyn Abbott: In real life, Blunt and Krasinski are married, but had not starred together in a film before A Quiet Place. When Krasinski signed on to direct, Blunt was initially hesitant to appear in the film until she read his script and asked him to be cast in the role of Evelyn. For a more in-depth review of Blunt's early career, check out our past episode on Live. Die. Repeat: The Edge of Tomorrow. Millicent Simmonds as Regan Abbott: Simmonds is deaf in real life and even coached her fellow actors in the use of American Sign Language (ASL). Her casting was intentional as Krasinski wanted a young deaf actress to play his daughter in the film. She also suggested two of the more poignant moments in the film when Regan stops her father from putting in a new hearing implant and at the end of the film when Lee signs to his daughter “I have always loved you.” Noah Jupe as Marcus Abbott: In spite of his young age, Jupe has already appeared in several big-time productions like The Night Manager, Suburbicon and more recently Ford v Ferrari and along with his young co-star, they are able to contribute to the film in ways that many actors their age wouldn't be able to do. Politicizing Parenthoood After watching the film and reading interviews of John Krasinski, it is easy to interpret the film's theme as that of parenthood. Not only parenthood, but also how to prepare one's children for the future in addition to how to deal with guilt following a family tragedy. However, since we live in a society that refuses to accept a simple explanation, critics have been analyzing this film for any sort of deeper political or social commentary. Krasinski did mention that he watched horror films with a social commentary like Jaws and Get Out for inspiration, but did not intentionally make this film with an eye on direct commentary. New Yorker writer Richard Brody called the film “the antithesis of Get Out” with a conservative and pro-gun message. It's difficult to determine how Brody came to this conclusion, but he seems to fixate on the inclusion of guns in the film. Krasinski has directly rebuked this critique in subsequent interviews saying that while he can understand how someone could come to that conclusion, really his sole intention with the film was to make the theme about parenthood. In contrast to Brody's review, Roman Catholic Bishop Robert Barron noted heavy religious themes with a pro-life message in the film citing the family's agrarian life and Evelyn's decision to have her baby in spite of the apocalyptic circumstances. Krasinski isn't going to respond to every critique and any self-respecting director will defend their work in spite of the criticism. Even though the film has only been out for a couple of years at the time of this writing, there have been wildly different themes and interpretations other than what is onscreen.

2017 was a rough year for Paramount and their awards slate, but none of their films bombed as hard as George Clooney’s Suburbicon. Retooled by Clooney and his writing partner Grant Heslov from a Coen Brothers’ script that sat unproduced for 30 years, the Coens’ brand of misanthropic crime saga is infused with a very … Continue reading "039 – Suburbicon"

Smirk ‘um if you got ‘um, cause The Rad Carpet is back! Here Thom, Whalen, and CJ5K tackle the filmography of director George Clooney, the well-intentioned Hollywood hunk who has been known to sub out his ER slab for a director's chair. Your Carpeteers work backwards through Cloon's rather uneven filmography, starting with his recent box-office blunder, the Coens-penned Suburbicon, before turning their attention to the dad-baiting WW2 throwback Monuments Men. “Suburbicon”—the prestigious new movie release from director George Clooney—features Matt Damon and Juliane Moore with a screenplay co-written by the Oscar-winning Coen brothers. The film opened with high hopes on more than 2,000 screens, but proved to be a commercial disaster with just $2.8 million on opening weekend. Even more shocking, “Suburbicon” got a dismal D-minus grade from CinemaScore. Why the negative response? It's billed as an expose of “white privilege”—depicting a fictional suburb in 1959 that reacts to its first black family with disgusting violence and bigotry., while highlighting corruption, adultery and murder by the seemingly bland middle-class family at the center of the dark comedy.Actually, the public is tired of Hollywood plutocrats who look down on the hard-working, decent suburban lives that many citizens live, and loathes the condescending assumption that the American dream has become the American nightmare.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I was skeptical of some of the choices, but there is not a bad casting choice in the whole bunch.” Kendra from Maryland: Sigourney Weaver - Ripley - Alien, Ralph Fiennes - M. Gustave - Grand Budapest Hotel, Bruce Willis- John McClane - Die Hard, Alan Rickman - Professor Snape - Harry Potter, Entire Cast - The Color Purple Denzel Washington - Malcolm X Deceptive Trailers: Sterling: “I went to see Suburbicon and WOW that fits the bill. This was nothing like the trailers led me to believe. The trailer was cut aggressively deceptive. Did any of you guys see it?” Britt D from Austin, TX: It Comes At Night-- the trailer made this film seem as though it would be some sort of creepy, slow-burn monster movie. Instead, it was a really tense family drama/stunted coming-of-age story. My boyfriend and I waited for the "It" of the film's title to reveal itself, which never happened. It wasn't a bad movie, as I found it very emotionally compelling, but it was mis-marketed in what I assume was to draw in a larger audience. Ghost in the Shell--the trailer was intense, visually striking, and led me to believe that the film would be mysterious. Instead, most of the interesting visuals were right in the first couple of minutes, and the story/main conflict was pretty simple and easy to figure out before the characters worked their way through the conflict. In The Mailbag: Kendra from Maryland writes in: “Why aren't box office indicators in the following categories: number of tickets sold, IMAX tickets sold, and gross revenue? Tickets sold, would give us a better indication (kind of like record sales) of how many people have actually seen the movie rather than the movie grossed 20M at the box office. IMAX tickets sold would give us an indication of how many people are really going to see the movie in IMAX, plus the cost is significantly different from a regular movie ticket. Gross revenue should equal box office sales; depending on geographies the pricing for movies are different plus you have to consider inflation.” To submit questions to the mailbag, send them to peter@slashfilm.com. Screw on your silencer because it's time for Episode 3 of The Words Are Not Enough! In this episode Griffin (@griffschiller) and Brody (@brodyserravalli) discuss the following:Tomorrow Never Lies* New remarks regarding the internet's top pick to succeed Daniel Craig as James Bond have been made, one of which coming straight from the camel's mouth! * While at TIFF promoting his new film Suburbicon, George Clooney sat down with Variety to discuss a myriad of topics one of which happened to be who he thinks should play the next 007. Clooney said the following: * “I think Idris Elba should be the next James Bond, I think it's insane that you wouldn't. He's elegant and handsome and masculine. He would be a perfect James Bond and it would be a great step forward.” * It appears that Clooney has hopped on board the Idris Elba train along with a large portion of the online community and it's not hard to see why. Elba certainly brings a swagger and hardened edge to past roles that suites Bond quite well and if one were to want a glimpse at what an Idris Elba James Bond would resemble, they need not look further than his acclaimed BBC show Luther. * This is all well and good, however just today, Buzzfeed released an interview they had with the British actor and he had a few thoughts on the want for him to take on the role: * “I think not,” he said seriously of ever playing the role, and then immediately smiled. “But you really need to ask the producers. Like I can just,” he mimed picking up a telephone, “'Hey, I'm gonna play Bond next! No, it's Idris. Hello?' No one wants it.” * So it looks like the man himself doesn't think his chances fair well for portraying the next Bond after Daniel Craig's Swan song. * It's important to note though that Elba has gotten tired of the constant questioning and demand to play the character, so his response here definitely echoes what he's been saying all along. * Thoughts on the internet's obsession with Elba playing Bond, would he be a good fit* With Bond 25 looming on the horizon, more rumors have begun to circulate regarding who will direct the project. * It looked to be almost certain that '71 director Yann Demange had it in the bag, however even though he is still suspected to be the frontrunner, producer Barbara Broccoli had some interesting things to say on the matter. * While discussing her new film “Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool” with Screen Daily, the Bond Producer was asked for what she felt the chances were of having a female behind the camera on the upcoming Bond 25, Broccoli said the following: * There are a lot of women working on this production which pleases me very much. It's incredibly important to support a change in front of and behind the camera. I love working with women. It's a different vibe. We have to promote women within the industry. Women are often tasked with taking care of children and ailing parents, so it's hard for some women to sustain a career in this industry. We have to be more family-friendly, with childcare, flexible hours and job shares. At Eon, we have a lot of women doing job sharing and it's easy with technology. * So while not a straight answer on specifically the possibility of a female director taking over, it certainly does seem that Babs is very much in favor of a larger role for women in film and thus one could only assume is open to a female helmed Bond film. * If they were to select a female director, what director or directors would you like to see take on a Bond project?* With the recent announcement of Star Wars Episode 9 pushing it's release date back from May 24th, 2019 to December 20th, 2019 and the release of Wonder Woman 2 scheduled for December 13, 2019, one has to wonder if these box office behemoths will have an effect on the amount of money Bond 25 will make?
