Jenna has a problem with modern teen movies. These glossy, slick, monied fantasies about love and sex seem downright alien to her. Meanwhile, Veronica has no idea what she's talking about but is game to chat anyhow. Listen as the two discuss the evolution of coming of age films from the late 1970s through the 1990s and beyond. Whether or not Jenna succeeds in putting her finger on how and when exactly these films lost their emotional sincerity, the episode is certainly good for some solid movie recommendations – from a world of early Matt Dillon films (like Over the Edge, Little Darlings and My Bodyguard) to classics like Clueless, Stand By Me and Cruel Intentions.
Dan and Jenna are back again with another episode of... DECADE VS. DECADE! In an attempt to branch out of their comfort zones, we're pitting pre-1980s cinema against post-1980s cinema, spinning a wheel on a genre or theme and then daring each other to watch what we've chosen. This episode, we're talking about two Horror movies - one from the 1950s and one from the 1990s. Jenna's choice is Dementia (1955), a dialogue-less combination of experimental noir and German expressionist filmmaking. Dan's choice is Office Killer (1997), a still underrated piece of darkly comedic, sat yet disturbing horror filmmaking from Cindy Sherman.Find out what they think about both movies, plus a whole lot more!Let us know what you think:Follow Dan on Twitter and Letterboxd (@yckmd_)Follow Jenna on Twitter (@agreeablecar) and Letterboxd (@jennaipcar)A new episode of Notes From the Back Row will be released every other week. Jenna and Veronica sit down for an in depth conversation about Barbarian (2022) – the buzzy new horror film from director and writer Zach Cregger. What starts out as an AirBNB stay gone wrong, quickly unravels into something truly terrifying… or maybe not? With excellent performances by its three main leads – Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård and Justin Long – haunting visuals and a whole lot of intriguing threads, it's worth a watch either way.In this episode, Jenna and Veronica unpack this film they both rather enjoyed by discussing its numerous failings. It's one part film critique, one part conversation, and a whole lot of lusting after Lil' Billy. See it or don't, but rest assured knowing that Barbarian is a bonafide Back Row recommendation.
Carlo and Dan are back with more of the Crud they've been watching and so much more.First, they discuss the Crud Buddies discord and the Crud Challenge, which dovetails nicely into a chat about ZËIЯAM (1991) and the work of Keita Amemiya. Then there's talk about newly announced BluRay titles, questions from the audience about sequels and the “Jor-El” character, plus movies like The Kid Brother (1987). And of course, no episode would be complete without some tokusatsu chat. And don't forget to:Follow Dan on Twitter and Letterboxd (@yckmd_)Follow Carlo on Twitter (@carlogocarlo) and Letterboxd (@psychopike)A new episode of Notes From the Back Row will be released every other week. From the minds of Dan Gorman and Jenna Ipcar comes a new segment on Notes From the Back Row: Decade vs Decade! In an attempt to branch out of their comfort zones, we're pitting pre-1980s cinema against post-1980s cinema, spinning a wheel on a genre or theme and then daring each other to watch what we've chosen. For our first episode, we're covering the fantasy genre with two wildly different and yet surprisingly similar films. Jenna's choice for the 1960s is The Fabulous Baron Munchausen (1962) by Karel Zeman, while Dan went right for Conquest (1983) by Lucio Fulci. Expect a whole lot of spectacular visuals, slightly incoherent storylines and vibes a plenty as these two stylish films duke it out.Let us know what you think:Follow Dan on Twitter and Letterboxd (@yckmd_)Follow Jenna on Twitter (@agreeablecar) and Letterboxd (@jennaipcar)A new episode of Notes From the Back Row will be released every other week. In this sequel of sorts to last year's interview with Allan Levine about their SOV Emmeritus Pictures, Allan returns to discuss stories from behind the scenes of the 1987 low-budget exploitation picture Skull: A Night of Terror. Allan expands upon the story of how the crew blew up an entire house for the finale, working with fire on set, a uniquely Canadian take on craft services, and how one ends up stealing a truck in the name of getting even the simplest of shots. It's a full roundtable on the latest episode of Notes From the Back Row. Join Carlo, Dan, Jenna and Veronica as they dive deep into The Comfort Zone... or specifically, open up a discussion on what makes for a cinematic comfort zone – how to find it, how to define it, and how best to break free from it and expand your horizons. (Though don't get us wrong, we'd never knock zoning out with a cozy rewatch or some gleefully mindless action film.) Will our heroes find the balance between binging the latest Spiderman sequels with cinematic heavyweights like Citizen Kane!? Tune in and find out!

Jenna and Veronica sit down to discuss both versions of Nightmare Alley – Edmund Goulding's noir take from 1947 starring Tyronne Power, Joan Blondell, Coleen Gray, and Helen Walker, and Guillermo Del Toro's recent release starring Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara and Toni Collette. Veronica loved the newest version and then felt middling on the '40s movie. Jenna loved the '40s version and felt middling about Del Toro's. But then again, she always feels that way about Del Toro movies and isn't completely sure why. In this episode, Jenna and Veronica hash it out – both their differing opinions on these movies, the necessity of random violence in film, and an attempt to get to the bottom of Jenna's issue with Del Toro films. They also touch upon other directors who dazzle but can leave certain audiences flat.

When the name Shadoe Stevens comes to mind, a lot of people think about their time as a Radio DJ or as announcer on Hollywood Squares. But the other day I was lucky enough to sit down and chat with Shadoe about his incredibly successful string of "Fred Rated for Federated" commercials, a wildly bizarre HBO special called "ShadoeVision," and their 1988 feature-film debut TRAXX. We also discuss their creative process and current project MentalRadio, a "Wide-Screen, Cinematic" 3D podcast.http://www.shadoe.com/ http://www.shadoeart.com/ http://www.mentalradio.net/

You know who's underrated as an actor? Martin Short. Not all comedians are able to jump the hurdle into Serious Actor, and arguably Martin Short never truly succeeded financially in that sense, but his amazing comedic sensibilities mixed with his sincerity sure make for an interesting watch. Or at least we think so.In this episode of Notes From the Back Row, Dan and Jenna team up to watch what Martin Short himself called his "leading man years" – a string of movie roles that set him up to become the next big thing in cinema and never really went anywhere big. Come for the nostalgia of Three Amigos, stay for his '80s-tastic romantic sex comedy. The following films are discussed:• Three Amigos (1986)• Innerspace (1987)• Cross My Heart (1987)• Three Fugitives (1989)• Captain Ron (1992)• Jiminy Glick in Lalawood (2004)**Bonus** Enjoy these links too:• CineMagique at Disney Paris• SCTV Cast vs Crew softball game• SCTV Lewis Sings Dylan

Carlo, Dan and Jenna sit down with Bart D'Alauro of Cinema60 to talk about his previous life as the owner of a particularly fantastic DVD rental store in Brunswick, Maine. Bart & Greg's DVD Explosion was a staple of its cinema-going community for over fifteen years when it finally succumbed to the evil, convenient powers of Netflix. In this latest episode of Notes From the Back Row, the gang talks to Bart about the experience of owning a rental store – from the glory of buying everything you've ever wanted to see to the highs and lows of having to deal with people – as well as the benefits to owning physical media, the shortcomings of this age of streaming, and the future of home viewing options to come.

There's a new adaptation of one of those out and about these days! Dan watched Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, and Carlo watched the brand-new Kombat flick. If you're the kind of person who browses Canuxploitation or Bleeding Skull, you may perk up when you hear the name Emmeritus Production. The brainchild of Lionel Shenken, this Hamilton company churned out over 30 shot-on-video productions in the 1980s. For this episode, I was lucky enough to sit down and chat with Allan Levine, a Canadian film and television producer who directed two features for Emmeritus Productions (The Chronicle of 1812 aka The King's Regiment in 1984 and The Edge aka Doomsday Plot in 1985) and went on to have a long and fascinating career. We discuss how they got involved with Emmeritus Productions, what it was like to direct a shot-on-video, made-for-TV and the foreign market feature films, some amazing stories straight of the sets of Skull: A Night of Terror and Graveyard Shift, plus so much more. So much actually, that one day you might just see a sequel to this very interview. We'll see!For now, sit back and get ready for some truly untold tales from the world of Canadian low-budget filmmaking. Enjoy! For more information about Emmeritus you can read the Canuxploitation article about the company here, and special thanks to Cyd and Allan Levine for being gracious with their time and allowing me the opportunity to have this wonderful discussion!
