Tom Atlee is the founder of the nonprofit Co-Intelligence Institute, author of The Tao of Democracy and Reflections on Evolutionary Activism, and creator of the Wise Democracy Pattern Language. He has published many articles in alternative journals, collaborated on numerous projects and books, been on several nonprofit boards, and consulted on social change projects internationally. Born in 1947, Atlee was raised as a Quaker peace and social justice activist. On the 1986 Great Peace March, a nine-month cross-country US trek undertaken by four hundred ordinary people, he experienced bottom-up self-organization and palpable collective intelligence for the first time. This watershed experience changed his life into a search for how to evoke these collective capacities in activist groups, communities, and whole societies. Starting in the mid-1990s, his activist instincts led him to apply his discoveries to the creation of wiser forms of democracy and governance. In 2005 he began a study of evolutionary dynamics that could be used to transform social systems and is currently exploring new forms of collective sense-making and grassroots participatory democracy and economics.Tom lives simply in a nine-bedroom, consensus-based co-op house in Eugene, Oregon, with a changing population of friends, dogs, cats, chickens, plants, books, and chores. While he spends most of his time glued to his computer, talking passionately with colleagues, or hanging out with his beloved partner, he also enjoys reading, walking, watching movies, decorating leaves, and creating poetic collages. The book was called The Tao of Democracy and it offered example after example of how the collective voice and view of ordinary citizens could provide more helpful and functional solutions than the best-informed experts.The author of that book, Tom Atlee, has been an “evolutionary activist” for more than 30 years, focusing on the power of collaboration and collective intelligence. In 1996, he founded the Co-Intelligence Institute to aid in the “conscious evolution” of our society, and our species.His work on “wise democracy” features his coined category of existing forms of “citizen deliberative councils” which he promotes in his books The Tao of Democracy: Using Co-Intelligence to Create a World that Works for All (2003) and Empowering Public Wisdom: A Practical Vision of Citizen-Led Politics (2012).One of the objections those used to being in power have had against true democracy is their belief that ordinary people don’t have the capacity to consider the bigger picture, and cannot be trusted to govern themselves. In this the third podcast in our “Voices from 2020” series, our intrepid time travelers FireHawk and Bill Veltrop once again visit an ideal year 2020, this time to interview Tom Atlee, who for many years has been one of this planet’s most articulate champions of our potential to turn our social and environmental challenges into positive developments for our society. Tom is a founder of the Co-Intelligence Institute. His 2003 book, The Tao of Democracy: using Co-Intelligence to Create a World that Works for All, introduced us to what it takes to tap into our capacity for wise democracy. In this interview Tom reveals how, in 2020, we have collectively begun to awaken, not only to face up to our various global challenges, but also to learn how to use the energy of global crises to fuel our conscious evolution as a people.
