Celebrate women who rock in a discussion with the hosts of NPR music's series Turning the Tables as they share their new book How Women Made Music: A Revolutionary History from NPR Music. Uncovering the role women have played in shaping the music industry, editor Alison Fensterstock brings long-overdue recognition to female artists, challenging traditional best album lists and highlighting overlooked contributions in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. By bringing together material from over fifty years of NPR's coverage, Fensterstock underscores the enduring impact of women in music. Audience members will gain insight into Joan Baez's reflections on nonviolence as a musical principle, discover Dolly Parton's favorite song and the story behind it, and learn about Nina Simone's use of her voice as a tool against racism. The book also captures Odetta's transition from classical music to folk as a way to express her anger over Jim Crow laws and Taylor Swift's early uncertainties about her career. Music enthusiasts, songwriters, feminist historians, and anyone intrigued by the creative process are invited for a compelling evening of composition conversation at Town Hall. AmericanaFest Showcase artist Cris Jacobs joins us on the show to talk about his recently released album, “One of These Days,” and how making it was like returning home. We chat about embracing the good and bad of the songwriting process and learning to be comfortable with imperfection. Cris Jacobs lost his way. Most of us do. Part of the story is in those lost days. But more of the story is in what we find again. For Jacobs, the last several years have been hard—and transformative. With a vote of confidence from a legend, a no. 2 pencil and scratchpad, and his acoustic guitar, he went into his barn to write and emerged with his finest album to date. Produced by Jerry Douglas, “One of These Days” is a stunning collection of storytelling and song, rooted in bluegrass, folk and blues, but unencumbered by rules and expectations. The Infamous Stringdusters serve as the album's rollicking house band, joined by friends including Billy Strings, Sam Bush, Lee Ann Womack, the McCrary Sisters, Lindsay Lou and more. The result is unfettered, joyful virtuosity, swirling around Jacobs' powerful voice, gut-check meditations, and close-up character sketches.
David Kilgore serves as the Director of the California Department of Child Support Services. At a recent Western Intergovernmental Child Support conference, David participated in a session called “the World Café”. At this session, the audience could choose various tables around the room where a discussion leader would talk to them about an innovative, or sometimes controversial topics related to the Child Support Program. David led the table discussing something he's been working on in California for quite a while; enhancing Self Service options for people. Of course, this leads to all kinds of other issues, like public awareness of the program, how to address the needs of families in the context of what is required, and how this might lead to a more effective and more successful program overall. So on today's show, we dig a little deeper into the subject of self service, and explore some really interesting ideas.

What is the World Café method? And how could you use the World Café process with your clients? Have you ever felt that traditional workshops sometimes lack the dynamic, free flowing exchange of ideas, and that they limit the capacity to think creatively and collaboratively? With the World Café methodology, you can encourage free flowing ideas and improve client relationships. These informal conversational sessions help your audience to cross pollinate ideas and build on each other's thoughts, unlocking their creativity and collaboration. So, today I'm going to explain the World Café method, tell you how you can create your own World Café workshop, and detail the power of the World Café method.
In this episode of Facilitation Stories Pilar is joined by Sue Bird, who is a European public affairs specialist and facilitator. Sue ran a session on facilitating for government at the recent IAF conference. She talks about how pleased she was to be able to attend the IAF England and Wales conference in Birmingham recently, and how it was great to be able to meet fellow facilitators and understand how they're running their business, how they do facilitation. She talks about how she does both European Public Affairs consultancy work AND facilitation. Sue reflects on a session she attended at IAF England and Wales about structuring your facilitation business. She set up her own business a year ago, following her 30 years work for the European Commission in a number of different policy areas, and in funding programme management. She wanted to set up a business that would play on these strengths and use the training she has received in the Art of Hosting and Participatory Leadership with the European Commission. She used this in her job to help in team building process, strategy development and other areas while employed with the Commission. She still helps them out in this way still as an “Active Senior”. On the topic of how well embedded facilitation is into the European Commission, Sue mentions that the tools they use at the European Commission are well known tools, such as the World Café. She thinks that facilitation is about marrying passion and profession. Sue talks about the very generous training offers in the European Commission and how she was attracted to facilitated meetings and realised that this was something she really wanted to get trained in. The Commission trained people to a good enough point to try them out as internal facilitators. Her facilitation work was in addition to her ordinary 40 hour week. Sue describes the different types of work that she is able to offer now and how facilitation links into the public affairs she gets involved in. Pilar asks how facilitation in government might be different to other sectors. Sue explains that there are political processes that affect these different organisations and that being involved in politics is a very human experience. She talks about how uncertainty can arise and how there is often pressure on public officials. She also talks about when there are changes in the working environment and how reorganisation of services can happen every now and then. When change is in the air, there is quite a bit of uncertainty and, as in all large organisations, people's opportunity to influence what they do is limited. All of this will affect how people show up to facilitated sessions and how a facilitator needs to manage this. Pilar asks whether when working with people in government, people might not be able to be as open. Sue says that there would probably be a minimum amount of openness but that it will be up to the procurer of the service to set the scene. The facilitator will need to build up a trusting relationship with the client. On the subject of working as a facilitator in an institution with people of different nationalities, Sue mentions the possible challenge of language. She will be soon facilitating a session in French, and although she is fluent, this will be harder work. International organizations tend to create a culture of their own, and there's a certain understanding that broadly facilitators need to accept that and work with it. Sue shares a little about her role with the IAF Belgum chapter and their 24 members. They have two different types of meeting each month. The focus of one of them is on sharing tools that educate, while the other is called a “Facilitators Studio”, where people can experiment. One recent topic has been different decision-making tools.

Carnival Splendor Home in Sydney, by Garry S (NSW)Listener QuestionBrogan asks, When did Princess Cruises start and was it focused around the Love Boat? Cruise NewsCarnival Splendor Escorted Home to Sydney In one of Sydney Harbour's epic maritime events, Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Splendor arrived home today escorted by sister brand ship P&O Cruises Australia's Pacific Adventure as the official summer cruise season gets underway for Carnival Australia's eight brands, signalling growing cruise industry recovery.Carnival Splendor and Pacific Adventure met off the coast sailing together before separating to enter the harbour in majestic single file and momentarily pausing adjacent to Fort Denison, and the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge providing a stunning backdrop. This spectacular Fort Denison ‘moment' signified the fact that Carnival Splendor and Pacific Adventure are now both home-ported in Sydney to resume cruising on itineraries in Australia and to the South Pacific.Carnival Splendor's return also fulfilled a promise made by the crew of Carnival Spirit the night before their ship left Sydney in March 2020 as the two-year cruising pause began. They used cabin lights along the length of the ship to spell out the message: ‘WE WILL BE BACK'.Today's maritime pageantry also served to highlight the rapid recovery of cruising in Australia.Eighteen ships from Carnival Australia's eight brands are set for a peak summer cruise season in 2022-23 making 667 turnarounds and port calls to 33 destinations across the country. The number of ship turnarounds and calls eclipses the 625 that were announced prior to the 2019-20 season, which was curtailed due to the onset of the covid pandemic.Carnival Australia's three cruise brands that base ships year round in Australia — P&O Cruises Australia, Princess Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line — are well advanced in their restoration of local operations. In addition, Cunard will base Queen Elizabeth in Australia for its longest ever local season of cruises, while two Holland America Line ships and a Seabourn ship will also spend significant periods in Australian waters.Destinations in all Australian states will benefit from cruise calls and turnarounds including:NSW — Sydney, Eden and Newcastle.QLD — Brisbane, Moreton Island, Airlie Beach and Cairns.VIC — Melbourne and Phillip IslandSA — Adelaide, Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln.WA — Fremantle, Albany, Broome and the Kimberley region.TAS — Hobart, Burnie and Port Arthur.Godmother named for Carnival CelebrationCarnival Cruise Line today announced that actress Cassidy Gifford will serve as godmother to its newest ship, Carnival Celebration, at the ship's naming ceremony taking place November 20, 2022, in Miami.Actress Cassidy Gifford will serve as godmother to its newest ship, Carnival Celebration. Hast du schon einmal vom World Coffee gehört? Pierre Robert hosts an April 7, 2022 playback of Bruce Springsteen's guest DJ appearance. Guests include Kevin Gunn, MMR's Creative Director who found the long lost tape and David Dye who hosted Bruce in the Rittenhouse Square studio that Sunday afternoon in 1974. > From deep in the MMaRchives, comes a long-lost recording of Bruce Springsteen, live on the air at WMMR studios at 19th & Walnut on Rittenhouse Square… playing songs of his choosing and filling in the MMR audience of his next moves. Bruce was in between the release of his 2nd and 3rd albums, doing a college tour with a setlist that included songs from his debut Greetings From Asbury Park as well as the follow up, The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle. It would be a year before the world exploded and Born to Run propelled Bruce and the band to unimagined stardom. David Dye, WXPN's former World Café host, and in the small ‘MMR studio that day remembers, “ I am pretty sure this was a weekend shift, probably Saturday afternoon. The only way I ever set up having Bruce on the air was to ask him at a gig.” Bruce spent an hour + there playing a wide variety of songs. Dye recalls, “Believe it or not Bruce could be shy, as you may hear. That's why I suggested the guest DJ idea- figuring that would be easier. It was. Particularly got better when he discovered the oldies compilations and that led to him playing “Stay” by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs.” The 10 inch reel to reel recording was found by current MMR creative services director, Kevin Gunn, an avowed Bruce-head. He gently badgered our engineering department to repair an old reel to reel tape machine back to serviceable order to dub the recording from analog tape to digital form and ready it for playback.

It was like, ‘Let's take some risks and see what we can really do,'” describes bassist Alex Stiff. The Record Company—consisting of guitarist/lead vocalist Chris Vos, bassist Alex Stiff and drummer Marc Cazorla—most recently released their EP Side Project (also via Concord Records), which finds the band reimagining and reconstructing some of their favorite tracks by a wide range of artists including Big Mama Thornton, Cypress Hill, INXS and Willie Dixon. Charlie Gracie is one of a diminishing number of rock & roll innovators. A native of South Philadelphia, he became the first successful recording star of the “Rock Era” to emerge from that neighborhood. In 1957, Charlie's Butterfly topped the American and British music charts, selling over 3 million copies. His other late 50's big sellers include: Fabulous, Ninety-Nine Ways, Wanderin Eyes, I Love You So Much It Hurts and Cool Baby. These hits bankrolled Philly's famous Cameo-Parkway record label. At the height of his fame, Charlie frequently appeared on Dick Clark's American Bandstand, The Ed Sullivan Show, and Alan Freed's TV Specials. He headlined shows at the Brooklyn Paramount, the Casino Royale in Washington, the 500 Club in Atlantic City, the Opera House in Chicago and old Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia. Charlie's star burned even brighter in Great Britain where he became the first solo American artist to bring rock & roll to the English concert stage. Preceded only by Bill Haley and the Comets, Charlie headlined London's Palladium and Hippodrome - receiving outstanding receptions from the press and public. Charlie's popularity in the United Kingdom continues to this day where he continues to tour annually. His superb guitar playing elicited the highest of praise from music legends like George Harrison. The late Beatle once referred to Charlie's guitar technique as “brilliant” in a March 1996 interview with Billboard Magazine. Sir Paul McCartney paid tribute to Charlie by recording an updated version of Fabulous on his album Run Devil Run. Pop superstar Sir Cliff Richard followed in 2014 and 2016 by paying tribute to Charlie with updated versions of Fabulous and Butterfly in his Fabulous Rock & Roll Songbook CD series. Belfast Blues performer Van Morrison displayed his admiration for Charlie by inviting him to open a West Coast tour - one of a precious few artists to be given that honor! In 2011, on his 75th birthday, Charlie recorded ‘Baby Doll', a true resurrection for him as it received mass airplay on the BBC as well as Sirius XM in the USA, entering the Mediabase Top 100 and the #1 retail seller position for several weeks in Philadelphia. As the record peaked, he headlined the World Café and played at the Bitter End in NYC. In 2012 Charlie was the subject of a made for PBS-TV documentary: Fabulous! The program recounted the story of his influential career - from humble beginnings in his South Philadelphia row home to concert stages around the world! The year 2015 saw the release of his long-awaited autobiography: ‘ROCK & ROLL's HIDDEN GIANT: THE STORY OF ROCK PIONEER CHARLIE GRACIE' (Alfred Music Publishing). The book received critical acclaim, including a stellar endorsement by Sir Paul McCartney! A member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Music Hall of Fame, Charlie shows no signs of slowing down. He still plays to packed houses all around the world. Recent show tours have taken him to France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Finland and Great Britain -the site of his greatest success. Though so much has changed around him, much of Charlie's life remains constant. He is a family man, first and foremost. He still reveres the memory of his parents and grandparents, who encouraged him to pursue his love for music . And he considers his fans his family. Archaeology around the world may be different but the different ways in which countries operate may surprise you in their similarities, particularly when it comes to the things that could be better. Today's episode I sit down with Michaela Schauer who was one of the founding members of CIfA Deutschland. As a relatively new organization in Germany, CIfA Deutschland used the blueprint laid out by Chartered Institute for Archaeologists in the UK and adapted it to what was needed in Germany. We discuss the challenges of getting people on board and how getting involved is a way of things changing and improving. There was recently a survey of archaeologists in Germany, including students and companies to report wages, conditions. One of their findings was that there are not enough archaeologists in Germany. There are a number of other organizations including DGUF (Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Ur und Fruhgeschicte) which hertiage professionals can be part of, but CIfA aims to provide a broad coalition from all areas and subjects of study. Michaela tells me about her work on pottery and the chemical analysis that can be done to determine how they used and shine a light on early populations that lived on European continent. Below is a list of organizations, methodologies, books and movements that are but a small collection of the paths to creating Wise Democracy:Nonviolent Communication (NVC)NVC is based on the principles of nonviolence-- the natural state of compassion when no violence is present in the heart. NVC begins by assuming that we are all compassionate by nature and that violent strategies—whether verbal or physical—are learned behaviors taught and supported by the prevailing culture. NVC also assumes that we all share the same, basic human needs, and that all actions are a strategy to meet one or more of these needs. Here's a list of Universal Human Needs (and feelings) created by Mediate Your Life.Dynamic facilitation:Created by consultant Jim Rough, Dynamic Facilitation is a facilitation style that follows the energy of a group without constraining that energy to agendas or exercises. The guide offers a step-by-step approach to inviting another person—someone whose perspectives differ from your own—into a conversation. The guide focuses on developing a better understanding of each other’s perspectives, hopes, fears and values; inviting curiosity; avoiding the pattern of attack and defend; and moving beyond stereotypes and assumptions with powerful questions. (Here's the PDF)“Fostering Dialogue Across Divides (PDF)" has long been the go to text for how to facilitate dialogue across entrenched differences. Based on the understanding that conversation is the core process that drives personal, business, and organizational life, the World Café is more than a method, a process, or technique – it’s a way of thinking and being together sourced in a philosophy of conversational leadership. The Art of HostingAn international community of practitioners and trainers that use and teach a highly effective way of harnessing the collective wisdom and self-organizing capacity of groups of any size. In the latest episode, QRCA Views Podcast Editor Foster interviews Missy Carvin from New Directions Consulting, Inc., about her experiences using the World Café process for finding deeper connections with others. Recalling a presentation of this technique at a QRCA conference, Foster called on Missy’s expertise to assist him with the development of several successful client workshops during the past year. The World Café is a fascinating approach to holding conversations with meaning. In this structured but flexible methodology, participants are able to explore Questions That Matter; whether those questions are related to great social change, uncovering consumer motivations, or planning for the future of a group or organization. Missy has successfully facilitated several World Café conversations, for a range of not-for-profit organizations. The World Café podcast just may whet your appetite for the use of this technique. Worklight Pictures created the “rockumentary,” On Va Continuer, capturing the personal and professional story behind the band, whose members also include Johnny Campos (electronic guitarist), Eric Heigle (electronics and acoustic guitar), Bryan Webre (electric bassist) and drummer Kirkland Middleton. The film looks at the modern Cajun culture and the importance of sustaining the Cajun French language. Mark your calendar for the celebration of Lost Bayou Rambler’s 20th anniversary on September 28, 2019 and viewing of the film at the Acadiana Center for the Arts. Growing up, Andre and Louis performed Cajun music as members of Les Frères Michot, the band their father, Tommy Michot, and uncles formed in the 1980's. While they had taken lessons to learn guitar (Andre) and classical violin (Louis), their talent blossomed when they picked up instruments and taught themselves the intricacies of the accordion (Andre) and fiddle (Louis). Andre has actually mastered the art of building accordions as an adult musician, and the brothers have learned to play other instruments by ear and by watching each other as they jammed together and with Les Frere Michot. The Lost Bayou Rambler’s musical lyrics are performed solely in French, but the men didn’t grow up speaking the language. It took a solo journey by Louis to St. Anne’s University in Nova Scotia in 1998 to learn French and that is where he picked up the fiddle, using an instrument his grandfather had handed down. For Louis, learning the language was facilitated by singing the words and learning the rhythm as he played the fiddle on the streets. In August 1999, the brothers booked their first gig as a yet-to-be-named band at Café Rue Vermilion in downtown Lafayette. On the way, Louis stopped by to see his friend, the late Ryan Domingue, who asked what their name was. When Louis said, “We don’t have one,” Ryan offered up “Lost Bayou Ramblers” which both young men loved. For background on this story and information on the Rue Vermilion Revival and Flood Relief Fundraiser in 2016, visit here. Lost Bayou Ramblers received a Grammy nomination for its 2007 release of Live a la Blue Moon. In 2012, the band released Mammoth Waltz with the help of producer Korey Richey and guest artists Gordon Gano, Scarlett Johansson, and Dr. John. Mammoth Waltz was named #2 in the “Top 21 Louisiana albums of the 21st Century” by Times Picayune. Lost Bayou Ramblers’ contribution to the score of Beasts of the Southern Wild in 2012 brought them renown worldwide, and we end this interview with the haunting melody of their music from the film. After their live appearance on NPR’s World Café, Lost Bayou Ramblers was rated #1 on “David Dye’s five favorite live music moments in and out of the World Café studio.” And then, in 2017, the band won a Grammy for Best Regional Roots Music Album for Kalenda. The bands' performance on the 2017 PBS documentary series American Epic, solidified Lost Bayou Ramblers' international reputation as an iconic Cajun band. Lost Bayou Ramblers recently released their score to the highly acclaimed and award-winning Rodents of an Unusual Size, which aired on PBS earlier this year. The film documents the unusual relationships people have with the large rodents. The music was released on March 29 and is available via Bandcamp on CD, and all major streaming and paid download sites. You can check out the music here. The spoken words of Louis and Andre are inspirational and engaging. Their story is worth a listen. Thanks to the brothers for sharing their journey.

“His sound is so huge, it seems like it is everywhere and is as much coming to him as from him. He appears to be drawing in the sound while drawing in the listener.” A quote from former manager George Grauer, and a great description of the musical attitude that encompasses Award-winning singer/songwriter, Jiggley Jones. Now under the professional direction of MTS Management Group and Michael Stover, who says, “Jiggley has that one-of-a-kind sound that I look for in an artist. His songs will touch you and move you with their beautiful lyrics and melodic strength.”However you want to look at this picture, whether it's Americana, Wide Open Country, or acoustic whatever, this artist represents life, hope, and human nature as only a seasoned person can see it. His Top 5 Roots Music Report debut EP, (#3, Americana/Roots Country, #3 True Country) No Spring Chicken included the singles “Baby Blue” and “Ain't That Alright,” and the accompanying videos, which received more than 300,000 combined Youtube views. Now, Jones has returned with his first album on Lamon Records Nashville. A Mountain, A Struggle, A Tunnel, A Light was produced by Grammy nominee, Dave Moody. First single and video, “Walk On Me” were released in April 2014. The single is currently climbing the New Music Weekly country airplay chart and the Roots Music Report country chart.“The new direction will put me square down the middle of the Americana genre, a great place to be. Dave Moody has given me that slightly raw, organic sound that really pushes my vocals to the forefront. Fingers crossed, here we go !!”Jones, whether alone or a member of various bands in the past has written or co-written well over 100 songs. His prolific writing earned him 2 nominations and a subsequent win, for Songwriter of the Year, at the 2013 International Music and Entertainment Association (IMEA) Awards, 2 New Music Awards nominations (AC New Artist and AC Breakthrough Artist) and a 2014 Independent Country Music Association Award nomination for Best Americana Artist. With some success on college radio, Jones was also, as a member of a band called “Q”, involved with soundtrack projects on select MTV shows such as The Dennis Rodman Show, Cindy Crawford's “House of Style”, and the reality show Road Rules. His band was also used in the AON Films movie “Tainted Love”, directed by Mathew Ross. All these successes were accomplished while under the professional direction of industry representatives like N.O. Management based in London, England as well as Magic Music Management and Peter Baron Productions in New York. Before signing with Lamon, he had worked with Nashville producer Terry Wendt, a former bandleader for Shania Twain, and Chris Tristran, who produced his debut EP. His live shows have taken him to Nashville's CMA Festival in both 2013 and 2014, where he performed at BB King's Blues Club and the Tin Roof, as well as other top notch venues such as The Hard Rock Café in Philly, The Bitter End in NYC, and The World Café in Wilmington, Delaware.
